so, i have ordered, and not yet received (get tomorrow) my nexus one. one of the things about it is that i only have the 500 minute plan (no, i didn't wanna drop 530 on a phone, lol), but coincidentally, i also like to game on the ps3 with a friend. unlike xbox, ps3 doesn't do private chat, so coordinating is actually easier with a cell phone. because i don't want to eat minutes, my intention was to actually skype him through my wifi. however, now i'm finding out, to the best of my knowledge, our option is 'skype lite', which is essentially a turd, and doesn't do anything for me except route my calls through skype on my phoneline, still using my minutes = worthless to me.
so, you guys have been fiddling with android for a while yet, i'm guessing, and i'm wondering what the best option/workaround is. i've heard mention of 'fring', but am not familiar with it. same with 'iskoot'.
gimme the digs, gents (or ladies, as the case may be). how can i voip using my phone to my buddies, without chewing phone minutes?

You're paying for the phone regardless. Contract monthly rate is more than non contract rate.
Google Voice comes pre-installed on the N1.
If you don't have a GV account, sign-up for one. It's still by invite only so it may take awhile before you get the invite.
Then you can just go into the 'Voice' app and select to make all calls via Google Voice (which means FREE, doesn't utilize your voice minutes).
You can use fring which has skype call support
Nimbuzz and Fring work well.
Countries outside the US don't get google voice yet.

You seem to get a GV account automatically with the Nexus One but it still uses your minutes!
Google Voice is not a voice service. You'll still use cell minutes using that alone. You'll need something like Gizmo to voice call over data.
Personally, I use SIPDroid, which integrated perfectly with the N1, GV, and Gizmo. Simply install it, and set up SIPDroid with the settings here:

Then all calls will always attempt to go through data, if it fails, it will fall back to a normal phone call. Works perfect.
sipdroid supports the industry standard for VoIP (i.e. SIP, like the former gizmo5). You can call other software SIP clients, hardware SIP phones, and SIP<->telephone network gateways.

Use sipdroid to tie with GV and that should prevent the minute usage. I use sipdroid with gizmo 5 and that works but sipdroid has its shortcomings though. but it works and if you're on 3G, no one can tell the difference. Check the G1/dream forums for more info on sipdroid. There's also a thread over there about sipdroid/skype and another app for totally free minutes....

I am also using sipdroid, GV and gizmo5. I setup GV to forward to gizmo, and setup sipdroid to login to my gizmo account. All incoming calls to gizmo are free. However if you originate an outgoing call with gizmo, you will be charged the per minute rate by gizmo. To get around this, I use the GV website to originate the call, so that it calls my gizmo account first then connects the call.
Works great so far.

I suspect that they closed it once google bought them. They might have invites soon, because google will prolly integrate this they of hack into their google voice service. . .

I have been trying to configure sipgate pbxes.org Google voice and sipdroid to work but i haven't been able to do it properly if anybody could help me out i would appreciate it

[Guide] Unlimited Wifi/3G VoIP Calling
I've been trying to use google voice for my N1 and have it send me my voicemails as emails/sms messages. Whenever I do the setup it tells me that they couldn't update my fowarding and to contact my carrier. Well obivously AT&T is NOT going to help me if I call. Anyone here have the same issue with AT&T? Anyone know what settings need to be changed so that this funciton works properly?
I have att and I'm getting the voice mail as both text and email. I didn't do anything different from how I had it configured previously.
I have TMo, and I had to setup my forwards automatically. Couldn't use google voice to do it. Hope that helps.
I'm on t-mo and google voice setup gives me an error when setting up voicemail, i manually did it following the instructions on the website and my voicemails forward to GV, but I was wondering, when the setup works properly from the phone, does the voicemail button in the phone app call into your google voicemail or your carrier voicemail? the way i have it now it calls my carrier voicemail.
mine did the setup automatically with att. att is still going to help you, they want your money, threaten to switch to tmobile, like half the people who baught this phone if they don't.
I logged on to the google.com/voice and it gave me some numbers to type in for a manual setup works like a charm now!
havent gotten my n1 yet so excuse the question on this
tmo has me on flexpay, calling later to see about migrating to post but to be honest, credit sucks so i dont see it happening.
the problem with flexpay is, they do not allow call forwarding.
so if i am using the google voice app/dialer, (have fav5, was going to setup the google voice as one for calling to it to not use minutes)
if i setup google voice to forward to my cell, give my google voice number out from now on and have people update my phone number to gvoice. could i just entirely bypass the need to use call forwarding this way
correct me if im wrong, but the google voice app will take over as my dialer, contacts, etc. so anytime i make a call, it will go through gvoice and anyone with callerid would see my gvoice number. so unless i give my tmo number out or someone doesnt update my number, i would never have a call come in on my tmo number except gvoice forwarded calls..... right?
also this would allow me to drop my unlimited text messaging as well since txt msgs would all go through gvoice instead of tmo? (i read this one elsewhere and just want to confirm that would work)

in voicemail settings it shows google local phone number, and under that a sign out option for my gmail addy
I don't think google voice saves you money yet... it still uses minutes, sms and data. I think the idea is that in the "future" we will only need data plans.

It doesn't use your plan SMSes, I don't think. All you have to use is data. GV SMS is free to US numbers.
well i called tmobile and in changing from flex to post pay, lost my fav5, lost my 5.99 internet. but thanks to freelancersunion.org i got 10%/month discount
50 extra whenever minutes, internet on 2 lines (was only 5.99 on 1 line before) and now i'm on post pay with call forwarding, YAY... paying 7$ more than i was

Go to Google.com/voice and go to settings and click activate under your phone number. It will then have you dial a numb
er on your phone that will manually set the voicemail forward. I'm on Att and this method works for me. I could not get it to auto setup either BTW...
I have my gv # on my friends and family list. I guess this means I'm using minutes when I use gv to dial out.

Also if you search these forums there are how-to's on how to set it up to replace your Verizon voicemail as well as using it to call out/have calls come in. I've already downloaded that app and I love how it works except for not using my local gv number when I dial out. It seems to use a random, simi-local number each time.

Just wondering, I'm not sure if this is related to your issue, but did you have caller ID blocked in any way before/during setting up GV?
Edit: Also for making outgoing calls, are you calling your GV number and then dialing out from there? Using that method or calling directly from your computer SHOULD make your GV number appear when you call someone (the GV app is suppose to do this for you, btw if you need help testing this I can PM you my phone number... free weekend mins and all =p).
Force GV Settings
Another thing you can try is going to https://www.google.com/voice/#callsettings and setting the "Caller ID (out)" to your GV number. This might force GV to display the correct number. What it sounds like they are doing now is drawing from a pool of random numbers in the area (for whatever reason, I don't know why) that they control and routing your call through them.
From what I have read, there is no way to dial straight out through gv. You have to dial your own gv number and use the #2 option.
I think I had a Window's Mobile app on my Touch Pro that did that for me.

That's not how it works with the native Android app. It's much quicker/easier and it dials some other "special" number, not your own GV number.

That defeats what I want it for - free calls.
My GVoice app seems to dial the same number every time. When you start a call using your GVoice number, just look at the pop up that says "Calling via Google Voice ###-###-####' and add that to your Verizon Friends & Family numbers. Your bill will show that you call that number over and over, so all outgoing calls are free. Incoming calls will not be free unfortunatelly :-/

Hey gentleart sorry for the late reply, I've been afk for a couple days thanks to my gf working the front desk at a Pediatrician's office x.x (curse those snot-bubbling runts, we went through 30 packs of ramen noodles and tea in the last few days =p).
I didn't notice that "Caller ID (out)" only applied to text, I wrote that before I had access to GV and that was a recommendation I read on their board. Even if that were true for making phone calls though, it might not solve your problem. I'll make a thread on the Google Voice help site about this specific problem though (I'll PM you the link once the post is up) and if an answer arises out of it, I'll post it back in this forum for public knowledge (BECAUSE KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! ugh sorry... x.x).

J/W, under Google Voice's "Calls" settings, have you tried changing "Caller ID (in)" to "Display my Google Voice number"? For some reason I have a feeling that you would still get billed for the incoming call (I can't wait until cell phones work like landlines) plus you wouldn't know who was calling (possibly forcing you to talk with relatives or even worse... ex-significant others x.x).
If you are a heavy enough phone user to need this you would probably want to switch to the unlimited plan, but I'm just curious how it would work with Verizon. For now though, I'm going to try and figure out why some people are getting multiple outgoing GV numbers when using the Android app (I think if you are in a heavily populated area - by GV users at least - that it might just cycle you out to another number... but there should be a way to force it to use your number without having to dial manually).

This is what I did, and I can confirm that all outgoing calls are free. I also added my GV number to my "10" so that when family calls it's included. Unfortunately you can't have your cake and eat it too, your incoming calls will be charged minutes just like they've always been. I just have it go to my work phone while I'm at work, and answer it for free using my land line.

Install Google Voice Callback. This routes your calls via the web for dialing purposes and then google voice calls you back. Now outgoing calls are free if you have friends and family, and incoming calls are free if someone calls your google voice number.
You still have to have a pretty high priced contract with Verizon to get friends and family though.
For fear of sounding like an idiot I just have to ask.. I got a Google invite finally and now I'm not sure what I want to do. I really need to keep my current cell number because I have a billion business cards with this number, but I want the awesome voicemail service. I'm guessing I should choose the Voice Mail option only and I will not lose my current number? Does this sound about right?

The number you see pop up when you dial should actually be the same each time. You should put that number in your friends and family and then using google voice out should not use minutes.

I thought this was eliminated due to the recent update in GV?
As long as you know the incoming numbers and outgoing numbers for GV, nobody is going to stop you from adding them to the A-List.
But the point of the original was that you would add one number and be able to call that one number and reach anyone you wanted. But now its no difference then adding any number to an A-list, right?
The original post is the same as the follow up. Add any numbers to the A-List especially google incoming and outgoing numbers then airtime won't be billed.

Yeah I know what you meant, but I though google broke this in the newest update.
They did.
This method is over a year old. Next time search the forum before posting your out-dated "discovery".
Technically they broke it only for Google Voice. What makes Android so special is that someone else created a program, one of which is called "Google Voice Callback" that lets those of us who have a Fav 5 list still call everyone for free using Google Voice, even with the update.
TL;DR The trick still works, just use a program like Google Voice Callback (FREE in the Market)
Vonage for Facebook is free voip.

Sip calling?
There is another way to do it without the myfaves if you use sipdroid or another program similar. You have to set yourself up with a sip number, which is free on a couple of sites (using sipgate currently).
Then set up your Google Voice callback, this lets you select whether you want to use the wifi(or 3g) calling. For incoming calls you can also force them to go to your free number.
I'm sure there are some good tutorials around if you need more info.
I used Google Voice, Gizmo5, Sipdroid, and Google Voice Callback app to get free calls. Did this on my N1 before I got tmobile service, and was doing it all over wifi. It also works over 3g or wifi. The wifi route could be a great way to give your old phones that are collecting dust a new life, by making them SIP phones.
Here is a basic rundown of steps:
1) First get a gizmo5 account, I had one from before, but they stopped new users. If you want one then check out ebay, they are only $5-10. Once you have gizmo you will have a SIP number in that account which will be used in the next step.
2) Download sipdroid from the android market. Go to settings and click on the SIP Account Settings.
In the box for Authorization username put in you gizmo5 number (put a 1 before the number). In the box below labelled Password just put in your gizmo password. In the box labeled "Server or Proxy"
put in proxy01.sipphone.com . In username or caller ID box i put in gizmo number again with 1 in front (dont know if this is necessary, but mine is working with it in). For the box that says Port it should be set to 5060. Thats all you need to do for the SIP Account Settings.
Press back on the sipdroid app to get to the main settings page and select the Advanced Options. Click on "Use STUN Server" and enable it. For STUN Server name put in stun01.sipphone.com . Then for "STUN Server port put in 3478 .
3) Now just go to your google voice site on your computer and go to the Voice Settings. Under phones you need to add your gizmo number (no need to put 1 before the number) as a forward number (on the right there is also a drop down box, you need to select Gizmo as the type of phone). It will confirm dial to test the phone, your cell phone should ring now if you followed my exact steps.

After a few minutes, I had it all set up and BOOM, calling worked immediately!

Glad this helped you out. I tried to explain each and every step so there was no room for error. I never ran into issues with wifi connections at home, starbucks, airports, hotels, but im guessing your work blocked alot of ports.
I received the invite awhile ago and I'm not sure what I want to do. There are a few unanswered questions about this that make me hesitant to switch anything.
1. Has Google fixed the occasional call routing to the wrong number or saying the number is disconnected?
2. Is the lag still present at times when making or receiving a call?
3. If we decide to choose our Google voice number as our sprint number, how will that affect my account details (online, *2, in person, or at in store payment kiosk)?
4. If I decide to keep things the way they are with having a sprint and gv number and using it "the old way" will I still be able to use it this way after the changeover?

You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions.
There are two ways to enable the integrated service:
1. Option 1: Keep your Sprint number (all the benefits of porting without the need to). In this case, your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.
How to enable this: click on the "change/port" link next to your GV # in the settings page, choose the option to use your existing number, enter your Sprint number and select the Sprint option.
2. Option 2: Replace your Sprint number with your Google Voice number (all the benefits of the app without the need for one). In this case, all calls made from your Sprint phone will display your Google Voice # natively (same for SMS).
How to enable this: click on the "enable Google Voice on your Sprint phone" link next to your Sprint forwarding phone. If the link does not show, click on edit and use the link to verify whether your phone is eligible.
In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail (pressing one on your phone links you to your Google Voicemail) and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice. Integrating your account with Sprint means you will still get the benefits of Any Mobile Any Time if that is included in your service plan.
Important Notes:
The integrated service only works with a valid Sprint mobile number.
For this early release, Sprint support channels will not be available for support, including Sprint Retail Stores, Sprint Customer Care, Sprint Telesales, Sprint Direct Sales Reps, etc.

I like the idea of having my Sprint number ring any and all phones I choose but I'm not going to change until I see how it affects others with respect to their minutes. I wouldn't use it if it's just a way to con people out of their M2M.
In short, if I were you OP I'd wait.
I'll just keep them separate like I do now. I prefer it that way.
I pulled the trigger last night and used my gv number. I'm thinking I might have a problem. Would someone that hasn't integrated try a test then tell me what happens. With the stock texting program, send a picture attachment to yourself (your phone number) and tell me if you have both a sent and received text. I'm sending a pic to my sprint number and it acts like it sends but I don't receive anything.
Unfortunately google voice doesn't support mms.. that's one of the reasons I never made the full switch.

This is a little different, kinda. Anyways I turned off Google voice integration and logoff then back on it gv app and I tried sending myself an mms with the stock text program. It worked this time. Do I don't know if it actually sends it out when gv integration is on but it definitely doesn't receive mms. I am not talking about the gv app. I might send Google some feedback and leave it turned off. Off until at least they enable the mms feature from gv app.
That is really stupid though, you can send mms through stock messaging app with Google voice integration but you can't receive any. Retarded!

Can you not recieve MMS from anyone? That would be a HUGE down fall for a lot of people. I find my self relying on MMS a lot any more.
I didn't get anyone to send me anything but I did run a test. I did the Google voice integration and chose the option to use my gv number. If I send anything from stock mms then it will show from the gv number. If I send a text to my sprint number with stock messaging it shows up on both the stock app and Google voice app. If I try to send a pic with stock to my sprint number, it acts like it went out but I receive nothing. If I go and turn off Google integration and restart the gv app, then I get the choices back to make calls through Google, etc. The way it is now. When you integrate you lose the option to choose to use with or without gv. I send a pic to my sprint number from the stock app after turning it off and the pic goes out then comes back to me.
I don't know if when its on the mms actually goes out or not because I didn't have anyone to test it with. I'm not about to try the other integration option because I don't want to give up my gv number I chose and paid for. I picked one originally but later decided I didn't like it so I had to pay to choose another. Trust me, its mind numbing to go through pages and pages of available phone numbers in my area code until I found one I liked.
I got the message too. I am not switching at least for now. I have found google vm cumbersome. I really don't like that I have to download vm messages and then I can not play them through the earpiece. It is played through the speaker. I haven't seen any real benefit to integrating so far.

How? That, plus having to download my messages killed the Google vm experience for me.
-Just to be clear, when I said ear piece, I meant the part of the phone where you put your ear. Not an ear piece that you plug into the 3.5mm headphone jack.
I can listen via the earpiece or speaker phone. Having to download the messages is a pain and I miss VVM but it works fine and I like that I cna check my voicemail on my laptop or anywhere else right now. I dont use google voice for phone calls or text though. just the google VM
