No most roms have a version for stock kernel, if you don't want to flash another kernel , is not required.

For future reference when someone tries to help, its best not to disrespect them....
I have the i9500 and all i did was flash CWM.zip using ODIN on my PC.
Then you can flash superuser.zip in CWM. Piece of cake!
Do you need a how to guide for that or do you know what I mean?
Does this method work on new kernels with the root-block thing?

To check version, go to Settings>More>About Device
I'm not sure about rooting part, since mine is quadcore version and the process might be different

I wouldn't use either of those methods. They require too much transferring between PC and device. Which is where incomplete flashing and hard bricking occurs.
I would just flash CWM using odin... Then you can do what ever you want i.e. flash super user, or a kernel or custom ROM that has root.

If your boot loader is locked (Like the AT&T version) then you will need to unlock that first, then root.

Excuse the noob question. How do I know if my bootloader is unlocked. I bought my phone in an airport in the duty free and is sim unlocked, but I dont know if the bootloader is unlocked.
In case it is unlocked, then the new cofface CWM should be able to root my phone?
Thanks in advance

Is it the i9500? Then thats unlocked.
The i9505 is mostly unlocked unless its from AT&T...
Yes you should be able to just flash CWM using ODIN, and you are good to go. If the bootloader is locked then the flash using ODIN wont work. Thats all. Nothing will happen. (it wont stuff up your phone)

All good. You are set to go!
Take a look at my youtube channel (link in the signature)
I've done a look at a few things to fix the S4 octa. Like a kernel that fixes zRam issues and a ROM review on both the OMEGA ROM and wanam ROM...
What are you saying is we really don't need any PC to root this? and what's ODIN?
When i root my HTC there's specific 'HTC only' files called HBOOT, Unlock_code.bin through HTCDev.com website
is ODIN specific 'Samsung only' files as well?
I know I've root my Samsung Galaxy Young S5360 but that thing's already come pre-rooted, just like my Galaxy Note 2
(forgot to add both to my sig, maybe after rooting s4 -.,-)
Also, how to unlock Samsung's bootloader in general? It doesn't need SamsungDev.com website or such right? :silly:

ODIN is a tool that you use on your PC.
You plug your S4 into your PC via USB and then ODIN adds the clockwork mod recovery files to the system.
- This is a video i created on how to root the galaxy Note. So for your S4 its exactly the same, except the file you are flashing is different.
Link: Kernel to flash...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1985575&d=1369329536
Once you have flashed this kernel, then when you reboot it will say you are not rooted, do you want to root. So you just say yes, and then it will reboot and you are done...
There's no ODIN for S4 octa core version?
1.85 is for GT-I9505... :silly:
I don't know why making a great deal out of it it's very simple you can use cofface method HERE and then goto odin 3.07 which does support i9500.... set his file in the pda section and flash it (of course when you are in download mode) thats about it, goto recovery and use the root option there is a menu for rooting in there.
these are the files use them http://d-h.st/WM2
don't forget to stop by his thread and hit the thanks button.

I've been following this thread and have used your method hamdogg and don't think I'm rooted. It seemed too easy. How can I check?? I tried an app that says I need root access, and it didnt work. So am I right to assume that I am not rooted?
Thanks..

Hi Gregg. If you flashed the kernel then you will need to boot into CWM, then select 'reboot'. Once you have done that it will prompt you to 'root'.
Thats it... easy. Then your apps that require root will work.
Hi guys. Bought a note 4 today, and it was rooted by a friend of mine using chainfire's method.
My question is, can you flash twrp or a rom without unlocking the bootloader, or is the bootloader not an issue and u don't have to mess with it?

hi ,
i have a N910F Note 4 ( Snapdragon ) i have used CF auto root by Chainfire , and flashed CWM recovery (as TWRP is not "configured" for N910F , only for Tmobile ,Sprint and i see now for Canadian models ) No need to touch Bootloader .I believe some Note 4 models( ? not sure which ) may have locked Bootloaders .
So make sure before you do anything, what your model no is etc .etc
Good luck

Hi,
How can I test that bootloader(Download mode) is locked on my Samsung Note 3(N9005) after I installed CyanogenMod?
Fastboot command tool doesn't see my device(I can see device with adb outside the Download Mode).
Is it possible to lock Download mode on Samsung device?
Thanks.

Only verizon version(sm-n900v?) is bootloader locked. N9005 is international so it isn't locked.

Why you need to lock it?. Never see anybody asking how to lock bl. Samsung didn't make it lockable anyway.

It's recommended for security purposes. Google shows a lot of reasons to do that(can't post links due to new account, but search for "android bootloader lock security" will give plenty of examples)
So for Samsung it's impossible to lock or to replace it with something that could be locked?
Locking and all other things fastboot is made for is NOT MADE/WORKING for Samsung Devices except the Galaxy Nexus. You have a open bootloader and you can only flash by bootloader if you use ODIN.
An att note 3 900a running kk also has a locked bootloader.

Sure, but he has a N9005 ^^
I know, I was just commenting on the fact that the note 3 from att also has a locked bootloader. The remaining note 3 variants do not have a locked bootloader and they cannot be locked unless the locking is done by Samsung.

Hi there. You need to flash a custom recovery on your phone which will unlock the bootloader and root it as well. Search in XDA for the custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) for your model and follow the tutorial to install it.
Report back if any issues.
All the best!
