Hi,
Please visit the following link and sign the petition for Honor 6 Lollipop kernel source code. We need to get as many people to sign this petition as possible. So please share it with your friends and other Honor smartphone users. If Huawei releases the sources we'll be able to request developers to make CM12.1 for Honor 6. And based on that other custom ROMS will be possible. Currently we are running EMUI3.0 or 3.1 which doesn't have a hint of beautiful material design.
I believe it is possible for us to make Huawei release the sources because they had earlier released Kitkat sources.
So go ahead and sign the petition.

signed and hoping that huawei sees the light
I did it!
Well, worth a try.
Fully functional cm would be so awesome!

I have to tried to build cm12.1 but i run into some errors. I'm using a prebuilt kernel as i don't have the sources. Let's hope huawei will release the sources.
Done !! :good:

Done, but it's too late for me, its my first and last honor phone, i love too much xda forums and stock rom for that kind of closed phone. MB

You ha e to understand that not only are these devices only available in a few places of the world, but also this company is based out of china which means the petition won't mean a thing. They are not forced to uphold copyrights or the GPL.

Agreed. I would not bother to spend a second on it.
In my opinion you are wasting your time... huawei does not release the source for all the stuff that is required to cook a custom rom for the kirin platform. They only release part of the kernel souce code but not all the other stuff...

If developers have source code, they will make 100% functional roms. I try sending multiple times emails to LeEco asking for this, but the server always give me spam reply. Because of that I've created a thread in LeEco forum.
Please help doing a coment and voting in the poll.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! Now we have a petition in change.org to do the max press possible to the brand. And the signs are for ALL the devices with Qualcomm processors.

great specs but the development is not so good. if they only release the sources.
Someone mentioned that they are releasing sources in September.

Yup, in the official forum, but who knows if is true or a fake...?
I read that they are selling these phones at less than cost as a loss leader to sell people their content services. If so, I very much doubt they are interested in supporting the dev community as that makes it easier for people to get rid of their apps and services from the devices.
We need to achieve that fast!!
Did you get source code from Le? Why don't you share for us?
Anyone has updates about the source code questions?
I didn't find any update on the change.org site.
BTW' we need more votes!!
I sign!
More people need to sign!!
does anyone confirm source code release soon???
i signed.
Signed.
I got response but still no plan for releasing...

I have not (yet) bought the phone b/c there will be no proper development in the absence of a source code release. I will probably go for the Axon 7 although I would like to have a bigger screen. (I will also not buy the Le Pro 3 although it is an interesting phone. Developer-unfriendly phone companies like LeEco are an absolute no-go for me. So sad ... )
Signed
Every tweet they post about their USA launch should get a comment about how their crappy source code policy is...
I doubt they will release the source code
Do not purchase le Max2. Most of the phones have finger print sensor issues.

Maybe they'll release the source code and the worth of this phone will double

I guess that answers my own question. The Mate 9 is going back.
That decision is counter to the Written Offer that is stated within the phone itself, under Settings>About Phone>Legal Information>Open Source Licenses.
I've emailed Huawei two times using the email address provided in the above section and haven't received a response yet. I think they cannot legally proceed without publishing the kernel source.
The kernel source is even listed in the written offer text.
So they're breaking the GNU GPL. Nice...
@hondajohn88 @ante0
Your arguments are in my opinion very strong. I'll give them a call in the next days! Updates coming.
Edit: I've send them a new mail with the screenshot provided by @hondajohn88. Updates will follow.

It could just be that they won't publish it on their site. But you should still be able to request it and they must comply. Unless they're doing a Xiaomi and just delay it for eternity.
So I got back mail from Huawei.
I think he's trying to tell me that every kernel is the same from the source, but I quite don't understand this sentence...

Unfortunately, but this is biggest problem of brand-companies. Every department knows only about self. Every region does not know what HQ is doing. If HQ told that this file must be placed on regional site, regional-IT will do it. But they never will ask this file from HQ first.
I have worked out the confusion here. The Huawei rep is believing the OP is after the kernel as in the built kernel included in the software not the source code. Try re-phrasing the email and include the words source code
If someone speaks Chinese they should send an email requesting the kernel source code from Huawei of China.
They are forced to release the kernel source code by Agreement with Google.
BUT Huawei doesn't release it unless it's being requested, but THEY MUST if they got request for it

I requested it a couple of weeks ago, still no answer from them.
Going to send a new email now.
This is my exact wording, which should be enough. Maybe I should change 'request' to 'demand... or else'.
"I would hereby like to request the Linux Kernel source code (including modifications) for my Huawei Mate 9 (MHA, Android 7.0, EMUI 5.0) in accordance with the GNU General Public License v2 section 2.
A download link is fine.
The current "download" link on your site simply links to a readme.txt file which tells me to email you to request the source code."
Edit: And sent. Included full model now too (MHA-L29C432). But I will probably not get an answer.
Heh. Excellent.
At least they have to answer some direct questions.
We want sources, no answers.
Has anyone tried emailing Google directly stating that Huawei is failing to abide by GNU General Public License v2 section 2 and see if they can assist?
Just trying to think outside the box...

Why should any body on XDA do anything to help Honor ?
Honor made an aggreement with XDA saying that the Honor 8 was going to be a great phone for us when you know that what we want in a phone is updates and prompt response to releasing kernel source code.
You guys have done neither.
I'm running my Honor 8 on EMUI 5 with it's stock 380 update.
This update is terrible.
It's buggy and the battery life is terrible.
We have been asking for you to release kernel source code for months now and have received no answer.
Were stuck on an outdated version of EMUI 5.
You have released EMUI 5.1 but won't give it to us.
It's now April and were stuck on January security patch.
Honor you do your bit and then you can ask us to help you.
John
If you looking on XDA then you must have read just how unhappy people are.
You must have read the ROM's and kernel's thread and must have read how close we are in getting a fully working Lineage 14.1 and must have read how if you released your EMUI 5 kernel source code.
If you reading all this why are you not helping ?
@op that survey has nothing to do with the Honor 8. Stop spamming and get to the real matter as others have advised, we need quicker turn around for updates and Hotfixes be it Honor/Huawei or Google Hotfixes. Kernel source CODE is badly needed ASAP we need at least a engineer from Honor to help out in the Freedom of building Roms which install and run properly..
All in all its a great phone but socks like many Honor / Huawei devices for support...

All these manufacturers want is to sell phones.
If they just took a step back and looked at what Google do different that sell so many phones.

Start making good on your promises and maybe you'll get some help. It would be one thing if Honor had never promised anything, then it would just be an unfortunate delay. The problem is that Honor said that certain things would happen and they have never happened.

Doing the path of Xiaomi. They went from n.1 seller in China to down the table. Only pleasing the stockholders is a short term vision. They had probably the lowest customer retention in the last years.

Whatever, honor and Huawei don't actually care about the north American market other than sales.
Well, that's fine. We'll show them the same dedication by simply not buying anymore Huawei or honor devices.

Re: Regarding the XDA community and Honor 8 partnership
Hi there,
I can give you an explanation for everything. Can you please post it so everyone can see? Here it is:
Quote:
Hi everyone! I just wanted to give you an update on Honor and the release of their kernel source, as well as our efforts to encourage development on Honor devices on XDA.
We started working with them in August 2016. One of the stipulations of our partnership was that they make kernel source available, to encourage development.
By October, they had released kernel source for the Honor 8. As a result, we had healthy development with early builds of CyanogenMod (now LineageOS, of course), as well as RR, working TWRP, and more. This was thanks in large part to a small team of Honor developers we assembled, comprised of @surdu_petru, @XePeleato, and @hackslash. This team also submitted to me a request to Honor to fill in some missing spots in their kernel source release, specifically the Trustzone driver, and precompiled libraries compatible with AOSP. Around that time, our partnership with Honor was ending.
Since early 2017, all kernel source has disappeared from Huawei's website, much to our disappointment, and yours. We are in contact with Honor, and soon to renew our agreement, and they claim that kernel source will be back online by the end of May. Since Huawei is such a big company and things are very slow, it might take longer than that. Also, we're not sure if they will re-release the MM kernel source, or that for Nougat. We are awaiting their answer but we are heavily pushing them to do what the community wants.
We made significant progress with Honor in 2H 2016 thanks to our agreement, and we hope that starting in June, we will resume this progress with the goal of opening up Honor devices, including the new Honor 8 Pro, so that developers have what they need and users can enjoy customization of their devices.
Please PM me anytime with any questions or concerns.

Hope for some answer and that we still will be getting the support that is promised

Asus max phones have gained significant popularity in some countries like India, Indonesia and Russia. Asus has just released updated versions of the series a few days back. They are also very frequent on providing users with updates. The community is fairly happy on that front.
However there is one big challenge lately. For past two source code releases of the Max Pro M1 as well as the first one for Max Pro M2, source code zip uploaded on Asus website contains only encrypted gibberish, and all of ~600 MB.
Not only is this a hindrance for the development and modding community, but a violation of GPL.
Is it possible to reach out to ASUS and ask them rectify this?

There is no point in releasing the kernel sources then. Is there ?
This is completely wrong. I bought this device after reading on XDA that kernel source of this device was released (probably even before the device went for sale). Vanilla Android with released kernel source in that price range seemed a pretty good deal. And I'm happy with my purchase.
I'm not a developer myself. But as a person who loves to use custom ROMs and kernels and stuffs, I know how important kenrel source is.
So far the device got a good (better than many devices) development support.
Now that Asus encrypted the kernel source, it is affecting the development. I personally feel like cheated. It's like drawning a huge number of ROM enthusiast buyers to the product, and then betray them. It worries me even more because official Pie is releasing in February.
Why release the source in the first place if you're gonna encrypt the newer versions later? Plus, its a violation of GPL. What's next? Making Bootloader Unlocking impossible like Huawei / Honor did??
We are not asking much from Asus. We are not asking to fix bug or to add new features. We are just asking Asus to give what they gave in the first place, the very reason many of us bought this device. Asus, please do not encrypt the source, please make the source usable for the developers...
Thank you.
Asus should take action on these immediately. why released encryption when no use. they think we are blind users . common asus dont play games. as per ur statements in relese u should release then open source code. i think it whould bump to twitter and zentalk forum so they can see it as major issue. so twitter response is must and zentalk too. post these on zentalk too.
Well I Just Bought this Phone one month ago.. 11/11/2018 now i felt sad why asus whai u do this
Thn why even release encrypted one. Asus this is not acceptable.
Whats the point of source release like this.
WTH!! is wrong with ASUS , it shud not be like this ????
kecewa
3rd time using asus, and tweaking still not good.
They must release kernel source without encryption.
This sucks. I hope this will get enough highlight so that Asus will revert back to open releases of kernal source code.
Damn I didn't expect Asus will do that thing..
