Video stops but audio still plays...s4 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an s4 running a Google edition custom rom. It's 5.0.1 and has been just fine since I installed the from for maybe almost 2 months now. Recently it has developed a video problem where the video stops about a minute in but the audio still plays. This happens on the local player and streaming apps too. I have searched the web for answers and it seems many ppl have this issue and is not limited to s4 models. The only way to resolve it is a full wipe, but after a few days the problem comes back. Has anyone heard of this and what I can possibly do to stop it. I have tried clearing caches in all settings and gradually uninstalling recent apps but just can't get to the bottom of it. It's sooooooo annoying

If it makes you feel any better, this is a cross platform, cross ROM issue. I am having the same problem with a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and I have seen the same problem reported on S3s, S4s, Droid Bionics, etc.
I keep looking to see if Google is providing an update, but no apparent response despite the growing chorus of complaints and reports.
I had this issue when I flashed the latest Paranoid Android alpha update and their new gapps.
I flashed previous gapps and updated everything and I'm good now.

I had this problem out of nowhere yesterday morning. I removed extensions, etc. Nothing had changed since it had worked the day before, other than their new "listen" rollout, or that pandora competitor.
It would immediately crash with an "aw, snap" every time, within a millisecond.
So I went here: support.google.com/googleplay/?rd=1#contact=1
and filled that out. Got the auto response email with some pat, boilerplate problem solving stuff.
But I didn't do ONE THING, and it fixed itself.
I have a hunch that they get receipt of that, and check your account and fix it behind the scenes. That's the only thing I can think of, because I didn't do a thing, and it stopped working.... and started working again after I didn't do a thing (other than try to remove extensions).....
that support troubleshooter may have done the trick. I am back up and running.
I had the same problem when upgrading to Play Music 5.0.something; what I did to overcome the FC's:
1. Clean cache Download Manager
2. Clean cache Play Music
3. Clean cache Media Storage
4. Reboot
I had the same problem and uninstalled updates to roll back to the prior version. Then on Friday, I saw the update pending and decided to try again. Somehow, it did indeed fix itself. However, what I notice now is that it likes to un in the background on its own from time to time -- enough that it seems to be interfering with battery life . . . .
Works fine for me, never had an issue. I don't use it though as I don't listen to music on my phone

[Q] Google Play Music broken after 4.4.2?

Hi!
Does anyone have problem with Google Play Music after the KitKat upgrade?
After the upgrade when i try to play a song, it gives me an error after a few minutes: "Music Playback error. Can't play the track you requested,"
I tried to remove the updates from Play Music, clear data from Play Music and Media Storage, nothing helped.
It happens on wifi and mobile connection too, and with the songs that i made to offline.
I haven't found a soultion on the forum.
Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks!
Sorry for my English.
That might be a result of Google releasing Google Music in your country. Have you registered your account through a proxy before?
If so, you probably have playlists with tracks that is not available in your region that your account now is associated with. Try search for the songs again and see if you can play it from there.

Thanks for the tip. Play Music All Access released a half year ago, and before I didn't used a proxy to use the service. On 4.2.2 it worked well. Only on KitKat is this problem. I'll try to fix the update errors from the PC Suite, and a hard reset. I'll reply about it's success.

I had the same problem on 4.2, in my case clearing data uninstalling installing helped though... or it got fixed few days later... or I found a solution which I forgot.
I do realize that this won't help you much, just wanted to point out that it had nothing to do with the android version.
Also that the proxy stuff someone said is needed only to set it up... after that there is no need for any proxies. So I would say has nothing to do with it.
Also I am in a country that got play music just now and I had it since all access began... so again I think even that would not be a case.
I am a bit angry because in my country the all access is cheaper as in the US and I am not sure I can switch to the action price and if I will have the same songs as in US market...

Thanks for the information, i think it's not about the Android version too. I think LG made some changes, because on my Nexus 7 on stock 4.4.2 it works fine. I found some forums about this problem, but on the Optimus G model, and without a solution. So I think the problem is on LG's side. I wrote a mail to them about the problems after the update, and they replied they are working on to fix them. I hope they will fix this too.
Running out of things to try
I have had the exact same issue since updating to 4.4.2 on my LG G2. I had to reset the Google framework app to finally get the update after weeks of trying. So initially thought the error was due to that. So I factory reset my device & still get the errors.
I have tried clearing cache, data, uninstalling all updates to play music. Still the same problems.
Updated the play app & still no resolution.
When I'm on mobile data I get the error on every song I play. On Wi-Fi I can go 5 to 10 songs before the same error pops up.
I have contacted T-Mobile & they confirmed that a lot of users have reported this after the 4.4.2 update me not just with the G2 but also with the galaxy S4 & note 3 after updating to 4.4.2 as well. I told them all the trouble shooting I've done & they told me to contact Google to find a solution.
Google play music support was unaware of this issue & after running me through the same steps told me to contact LG
LG once again was unaware of the issue & tired running me thorough the same steps again. Their conclusion was that my phone/the app was having trouble communicating with the Google servers. & directed me back to Google or T-Mobile.
So it's really frustrating since 4.4.2 has fixed a lot of my other issues (GPS, Bluetooth meta data, etc) but has given me a different & so far solution-less problem. :banghead:
My wife's G2 is doing this as well.
I did dig up a thread from Android Central from last year where some people suspected some process needed for their Chromecast was somehow interfering.
Just curious, how many of you with this issue also have a Chromecast?

I have a couple of Chromecasts. Before the 4.4.2 update my G2 would not cast a full song or two onto the Chromecast. But after the update it's the other way around. It will cast fine with no errors but won't play a full song on my phone.
Did you know what about the Chromecast was causing this issue? Was it the Chromecast app?
---------- Post added at 02:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:08 PM ----------
I tested out a couple of scenarios for at least playing songs that were cached on the device.
Had the same problems with data turned on & off. & even in airplane mode.
The only time it played without the playback error was when I took the SIM card out. It's a bit strange I know, but I'm going to see if maybe getting a different SIM card form T-Mobile does anything to this issue.

Here's the acknowledgement from Google on the issue!

No, I had just find a whole bunch of other threads for different phones from last year where people started having issues with google music who used Chromecast. It occurred to me that we have a Chromecast, and my wife uses it. I haven't used once, we both have T-mobile, but I have a Nexus 5. So I was just wondering if everyone else with a G2 and the same problem also had a Chromecast.
Maybe there's some service the Chromecast uses that foobars something Music uses. Someone else had mentioned that when Music errors like this, they restart their phone and if works properly. Maybe that Chromecast service doesn't start on boot, and so it doesn't cause an issue until after it is used.
*shrugs* just a theory.

I don't have a Chromecast. I wrote to Google, and replied they consulted my case to a higher tier. I hope they can fix it in the Play Music app. I'm waiting for newer informations.
I also have the same problem andere its gettin worse everyvday. I tried it with an older version of play music but with no luck.
I hope they come with a fix soon because its getting really frustrating.

Same error here on T mobile LG G2 running KitKat. Sometimes Google Music just works but then it wont play a thing for a while. Especially frustrates me when I am driving or when at the gym.

im having the same issue.. if i am on mobile data or wifi. if i turn them off i will get the err less, like 2 or 2 songs. this is my primary source of music!! please help
Finally managed to get a Logcat with all the details of the crash. Lots of information in this... The process "Nexstreaming" goes haywire when the crashes happen. Lots of A2DP references as well. Hopefully somebody can make heads or tails of all of this.
I had one song playing on loop during this Logcat. This particular song crashes more often than any other in Google Play (for me anyway) . I'm wondering if the audio subsystem is getting flooded with too much bandwidth for the BT codec to parse?

Such an annoying issue.
Even with pinned music it won't always play
Funny thing I'm noticing is that - especially with pinned music - if a song crashes the player, it's highly likely that it'll crash the player again at the same point in the song. I have several songs that I can predict the exact places where the song will quit. It's not consistent from play to play though.

Hey so I decided to come here and take a look, what exactly is the problem you guys are having with Google play music app, is it only while streaming with Bluetooth or on both WiFi and Bluetooth, are songs bought from the play store or from you computer? Any details will be appreciated

Video problems in kit kat

I have the v500 since christmas and i had no problem until i updated to kit kat. Before that, i watched my videos on bsplayer (its quite easy for using subtitles) or VLC, but now they both dont work well. Bsplayer is like slow, i mean, every 2 seconds the image stops for an instant and then continues, sound works without problem. In VLC it's the sound that stops working once every five minutes more or less, and for a few seconds. Sometimes, it also happens with some games. I alredy tried to restore the device and reinstalling the apps. Also deleting data files and cache of both apps.
Anyone having this problem and a solution??

Although I like BSPlayer and it works fine for me, I should point out that the default video player by LG works very well, reads subtitles just fine, and many codecs.
Did you clear app data or did you try uninstalling the apps and do a fresh install after the upgrade? I don't use either of those apps but i did have a problem after the upgrade with a couple of apps behaving badly until i cleared the app data and one required a reinstall.
doh, can you tell I was watching hockey when i wrote this? It looks like you already tried my suggestions...

I have problem with videos also.
I has started after changing soft to new soft 4.4.2.
While playing video (.mkv or .mp4), in defeault player or in MX Player, every few minutes, the picture is freezing for few seconds (audio is playing normally).
I have tried with different movies, always the same.
Before Android update everything was allright.

The same is happening to me as well. I'm considering following the thread in XDA about downgrading to original 4.2.2, but I'm worried about bricking the G Pad. It's the last option; i have tried with several different players, and after a factory reset to no avail.
It's a mess from LG, I can't understand how this could go under the radar during their testing phase.
Anyone has info about future updates?
this actually happens to me using the stock video player on kit kat. I been using mx player since then with no issues..
Hi,
I have exactly the same issue with videos on 4.4.2 whatever video player I am using. I updated my tablet as soon as I bought it, so I can not compare to 4.2.
I switched to the ART runtime (you need to enable Developer options to do so) a week ago and since then, video playing is smooth again.

[Q] No mic/earpiece in calls

Situation
Bought Nexus 4 refurbished, works great except for this issue. Back speaker works great, Google Search works with mic (Ok Google). Updated via OTA all the way to 5.0. Am using phone on a carrier in Ecuador.
Problem
When making a phone call over the local carrier, call connects (you can see the counter on screen), music, if playing, pauses as it should. But no audio from the earpiece, and the other side does not hear anything from my side. Tried putting call on speaker, nothing. Tried with headphones, nothing. However, when making a Hangouts call over data, mic/earpiece work fine. To me, this means the hardware functions, so it must be software related. The phone sends SMS without issue, so it works with the local carrier. Also data works without any issue.
What I've done so far
Searched high and low, and it seems this is a somewhat common problem that some have fixed in many different ways. Please let me know if you know of another that I may have missed.
Downgrading to 4.4.4
Upgrading back to 5.0
Factory Reset
Flash 5.0 Factory image
Upgrade to 5.0.1
Flash complete 5.0.1 Factory image
Flashed latest CM11 nightly
Tried several "solutions" found on Google Group forum, such as pluging headphones in and out
Flashed Hybrid modem with included audio fix
Switched SIM cards
Installed SoundAbout, and tried many different options - redirecting Phone Audio, even changing options for Headset detection (thought the phone was confused, thinking the headphones were in)
Tested mic with recording apps and by recording videos, all work fine.
Installed PAC-ROM without Gapps to see if it was the Google Play Services issue
Disabled the CheckInService
I think I've tried more, but can't remember them all. It's been over a week, and can't answer or make phone calls.
Coming to my wits end, and it's extremely frustrating since it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, and I hate giving up on something I can fix. Any suggestions?
(Edited and added a couple more tests to the list)
yep, you are not the only one with this issue, it started to plague users just recently, including me and from what i've learned so far it has got something to do with google play services.
however for me, flashing 5.0/5.0.1 resolved it (i only encountered it on CM4.4.4 )
here is another topic bout this. good luck

ps. this thread i linked above acutally contains some solution/workaround involving disabling one of the google play services. just read through the whole thread
If this is really about Google Services, try installing a ROM without adding GApps. You can then state if they are really the culprit here.
I too had the exact same problem. I was on CM 4.4.4 nightlies. Moving to stock lollipop5.0 solved the problem.

I tried that too. I installed PAC-ROM, the latest nightly, without GAPPS. Booted fine, all seems to be working except sound in calls.
I also tried disabling the CheckIn Service, as was mentioned in the other thread, still no luck. So frustrating!!
I'll try them all again...
HijoProdigo,
+1 on flashing a 5.0 ROM.
Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks back. After messing with the phone for three days, flashing a Lollipop ROM solved the issue (I used CM12 unofficial nightlies)
