Thinking about purchasing the nexus one? Here is a breakdown for all T Mobile customers of what's required.
Purchase Link
If you have a family plan, shared plan, flexpay plan or corporate account you will need to change before going to purchase the nexus one from the link above. Once all the above items are removed/changed then you are good to go and can enjoy the upgraded discount.
Quote from Nexus site "You can choose to purchase the Nexus One from the Google Phone Webstore without service for $529 USD, or with a qualifying T-Mobile US service plan at a discounted price:
Nexus One without service: $529
Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for new customers: $179
Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for qualifying existing T-Mobile customers who are adding data plans: $279
Nexus One with new, 2-year T-Mobile US service plan for qualifying existing T-Mobile customers who are upgrading their data plans: $379"
Source
I only paid 179.99 but that's because i opened a new line of service and got a new number. Be aware that if you open a new line of service to get the 179.99 price you CANNOT cancel your other line of service early or you will have to pay a 200.00 fee for early termination. The only option you have is to switch it to a home phone plan. If you decide to go that route as I did then it is 10.00 a month. It uses your sim card and a router that you get from T Mobile for 40.00. You must have a high speed connection to use this option.
I'm hoping you accidentally hit submit before finishing your post, cuz it doesn't make much sense to me.
I have been off contract since January 2009. How do I get the $179 price?
Edit: Just saw your post in the other thread. I think what you're saying confirms what the T-mo rep told me earlier today. She said that if I switched from my old grandfathered plan to the Even More 500 plan, then I'd be eligible for the $179 price. Not that I'm going to do it... it's cheaper for me to stick to my current plan and buying the phone unlocked.

Someone in another forum had the same issue and apparently he had to add another line. Once his N1 comes in he plans on canceling his old line and switching his number over to the new line. I can try to find that post if need be.?

That's not necessary, but thanks. I'd only buy the phone unlocked, because it will considerably cheaper than switching plans and being in a contract again. I'm really just curious because it doesn't seem right that if we're off contract with T-mo, we couldn't take advantage of the subsidized price of the phone. Theoretically we're paying higher plan prices every month because our original phones were subsidized. So if we're off contract, then we should have paid T-mo back for that subsidy and they should either discount our monthly rate (like the Even More Plus plans), or subsidize a new phone for us.

Sorry, people on here seem to like 'hard evidence' that is only text from another person. I am sure that this has been the plan since the beginning. Google, obviously having the upper hand and being in control, is calling the shots on how this works. T-Mobile, being an underdog, was probably given first dibs with this being part of the deal. But, I do agree with you. I bought it unlocked and would have rather saved the money and updated my phone with current plan. The guys post was something about he had a "grandfathered" in plan and was eligible through TMO for the update but with it being through Google he wasn't able to.... I guess all we can say is 'okay' and mush on.
I would have bought the unlocked version as well but I'm already paying the same amount as the plan that is required so took the discount and ran. I'm sure eventually there will be more plans available. Google is sure to take a lot of heat for it and will eventually crack...well I hope anyways lol.
Both of you should take a look at the discussion here:

It doesn't look good for people who are existing customers, off contract and want to sign a new contract. Kinda ****ty if you ask me, but fortunately it won't affect me.
For people interested in the tmo family plans, here is some math.
Getting 2 subsidized phones over a two-year period breaks down to an extra $15 a month ([$180 x2]/24). 2 unlocked phones is $44 a month ([$530 x2]/24).
Looking at text and web family plans with no annual contracts, its $109.99 for 750mins, $119.99 for 1500mins and $139.99 for unlimited. This gives you freedom of picking your plans or switching to another carrier that supports this phone.
Knowing that if you get the subsidized version, you will be paying $160 a month plus the breakdown of $15 a month (spreading out what you pay up front for the devices) it comes to $175 a month.
With the unlocked device price breakdown at $44 a month, you can see you will save money if you buy the unlocked phone and use either the 750min or 1500min family plans as they will cost you $154 and $164 respectively.
This is a two year savings of $504 and $264!

I have a family plan with 4 lines so I had to break down and pay full price.... same when the G1 came out. Only reason is because i feel like this phone I will keep for some time. I hope. Google, I think, will be getting a lot of heat about this. I took a look at the link and there are A LOT of pissed off people on there. But GOOG does have the money to blow.
This is interesting guys

Oops lmao, I meant without service
I actually bought the unlocked phone for $530,-. I have another 6 months on my contract.
But this way, I'll be contract free, and am actually SAVING money now, because I had a G1 with Myfav600, which was $80,- a month.
And I never even come close to using my 600 minutes.
So the 500 plus plan is perfect for me. And I save $20,- a month.
And , when they get the Voip thing happening, I can use that as well, since I have a Google Voice number.
i'm a current T-mob customer with 9 mo left on my 2 yr contract i got with my G1, once i get some extra cash saved up i plan to pay the full price for the nexus one because for me at least i currently spend $53 a month on my service with t-mob and don't care or benefit to change it and if i could extend my contract and pay less for the phone by some amount it will still save me more in the long run by not having to pay for the dumb 80 dollar a month plan they force you to have by going that route
this is of course as long as they do not change their tune on how they are handling this before i'm ready to purchase the phone i.e. give me a discount of some amount to upgrade and keep my current plan or one very close to it
Im currently on the even more plus 500+unlimited text+Web
On flex pay. Iam so lucky i didnt sign a 2 year contract!
I just hope tmobile doesnt try to make me pay 80 if i buy the phone without a plan. Just going to pop in my sim from G1
I've posted this in a couple other threads but it should help here.
I'll tell everyone up front I worked for T-Mobile customer care for the last 4 years up until this past June and was a supervisor for the last year of my time there.
If you currently have a single line plan that is out of contract is qualifies through T-Mobile for the full discount but Google is giving you the price that is almost $400 here is what you can do it get around it. And change to the Even More plans prior WILL NOT fix this issue.
Alot of people are getting bad information from TMobile about what needs to be done because the reps were given almost no information about the ordering process. So most reps and just going with the flow to try and get people off the phone.
When you go to order the phone with Google select the option to add a new line to your account. It will give you the 179.99 price for adding the new line. Once the new phone comes in the mail call T-Mobile and cancel your old line and ask them to put a "request old number back" request to replace the new number with your old one. This takes about 24 hours to go through. During that 24 hours your old number will not work because you have to cancel it before you do this.
I know for a fact this will work but the rep you talk to may give you crap about doing this and not let you because they want to be a ****. If you're worried about that call and cancel you old line when you get the phone then call back and talk to another rep and tell them to put in the request for you.
Don't you have to pay the 200 dollar ETF if you cancel a line?
There's no ETF if the line has no contract. So if you add a new line to get the discount you can cancel the old one without a fee
Ah I missed that part. I am trying to get the 180 price and I only have a few months left on my contract and they won't upgrade it. They will let me add a new line of service though.

However, I'm new to android. Does anyone know a thread or something that explains all the terminology (like what adb is) and how to flash a custom ROM?
I've also read people saying that you can install 3rd party apps without sideloading?

Custom SGS ROM + Guide for Flashing
$350... Twice the phone as an iPhone for half the cost. It's a bargain.
FYI, after this release TMobile actually moved the date on their Vibrant up to the 15th
$350!?!? I might not have to move to sprint with this price.
If they dont force into a text/data plan like the iPhone i should be great with my grandfathered plan.
at that price i might buy it just because. (no i'm not rich)
update:
Samsung Captivate, our next Android device, will be available starting July 18th at AT&T retail locations and online for $199.99 (with voice plan and minimum $15 data service required on two-year service contract)
never mind. I'll be going to Sprint when the Galaxy Pro hit's them.
Minimum $15 data plan required... is that 15 dollars for unlimited data? Compared to the recently deceased $30 unlimited iPhone plan?

That's with a new contract
If you have an "old" data plan (even if it's the iPhone data plan), they'll grandfather you in on the old "unlimited" (5GB) plans which are $30/mo. I was going to replace my iPhone and called them to make sure it'd work like that and they said it would.
I'll go through the premier site to see if I can buy the phone without being forced into a new contract like the iphone. I'm currently on att fuze with a $39.99 450 voice, $20 data/sms (unlimited data, 200 txt). My bill is around $63 with taxes. If in fact I have to to get a new contract to use this phone on ATT then i might as well go to sprint and get unlimited everything for about $15+ . My company offers discounts through sprint & att.

The guide is pathetic, it doesn't explain the terminology like what these things the guide are telling me to install.
Also we don't know if an SGS ROM will work on the captivate. Potentially bricking? Thanks for the advice.
I'm pretty sure I still currently have the $15/mo unlimited data, without texting or mms or anything, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to keep it without them forcing me into picking up one of their new, limited data plans. In my account information, I actually see the option to upgrade to the $30/mo unlimited messaging and data, but I'm afraid to choose it out of fear that once I do, they'll put me on one of their new crappy limited plans and tell me I'm out of luck, since I switched away from what I already had.

Chill out for a minute! The Captivate isn't even out yet, neither are any of the US Galaxy S phones, so many things are unknown still. In a couple of weeks, we'll all know a whole lot more with certainty!
Well, I'm still looking for a guide to android. Something that explains everything inside out. I guess I have to look at developer docs to find out.
I should have posted this two months ago when I found out, but got lazy. The now $30 fee reminded me and I decided I should pass the info along. I had a conversation with:
Handsets, Product Distribution, Business
Brenda Raney
908-559-7518
[email protected]
This conversation was about the NFC blocking but I baited her with a comment and she responded by saying something along the lines of "Unlimited Data would no longer be an option on "Advanced" handsets released later this year (2012). When you upgrade to one of these new "Advanced" (IE Smartphone) you will have to give up your unlimited data plan and pick a paid package."
She would not tell me when it would happen, but said that Verizon was not under any obligation to continue to grandfather people with unlimited data. I fully expect this to happen as soon as Quad Core phones hit the market.
Just one more drop in the bucket. Removing unlimited data packages for new subscribers, removing early upgrades, every two discounts, blocking Google from releasing direct updates for developer devices like the Galaxy Nexus, and now the $30 upgrade fee.
No, I did not record the phone conversation but the removal of grandfathered unlimited data will happen, and sooner then later. Feel free to chalk it up to a rumor if you don't believe me but when it happens, don't say I didn't warn you.
New Verizon devices use Sim cards, welcome to the world of buying off contract devices.
I wonder if this will let you break contract.

Sounds like it would to me
It seems like something they would do. I think I know there "plan" to get every one off unlimited data.
I have herd some things, but not like this. I think this is about spot on.
Now I will hold on to both of my unlimited data for dear life.
Edit: yes they do throttle 4G and will be doing more and more intill the next iphone and then will pull an AT&T X2. They will likely force you out of unlimited when you upgrade or if you you are on a "old" 4G phone they will throttle you on 4GLTE. I know, becuase I was throttled on 4G and then I stoped using the phone for 3 days, now I am unthrottled and sit at 90+hours of uptime with 2GB of use.
Link to some one who got throttled on 4G:http://www.phonearena.com/news/Is-Verizon-throttling-4G-speeds-too_id22818
Now he did use a crap load of data and I think he got what was coming, but I know when the new iphone with LTE comes out, WE ARE DOOMED. I have a 2nd line with unlimited data on AT&T, thats my back up plan. If not oh well.
Once again Verizon showing how little they care about their customers. From a legal standpoint they could probably do this because when you get a new phone you are under a new contract. But what if you buy the phone from ebay, etc and just add it to your plan. You are still technically under the same contract but they could track ESNs and force your plan to switch.
I hope they don't do this. I just left att after months of looking to take over someones Verizon contract. I found a person with 2 unlimited lines hopefully its not short lived. I really don't want to go to sprint

Verizon is CDMA only. The SIM cards are used for LTE, not GSM (a few phones have SIM slots for international GSM, but they're useless while on the Verizon network). So no, there is no buying of unlocked phones from Verizon.
Speaking of this, in China and other Asian countries, CDMA devices have SIM cards called R-UIM cards that work exactly the same way as GSM SIM cards, but CDMA carriers here in the US want to be able to stranglehold you in terms of what kinds of phone you use.
Hopefully Sprint still has unlimited data and their act together when my current contract is up in two years. Verizon charges an arm and a leg for their services and it's not enough? They have to nickel and dime us every step of the way. Aside from decent service I can't say that I feel like I get a whole lot for my money with Verizon. I've just had enough bad experiences with AT&T, and Sprint that I've been afraid to go back to either of them. Maybe it's not so bad these days?
I hope so too, becuase I need a 3rd back up plan and for every one elses sake.
My experience with AT&T has been very good, but I don't think that would be true if I was locked in for 2 years. Sprint has really come up in the last year or so and they seem like they are upgrading fast. (NV and LTE)
Not surprising in the least. Sprint will have to soon end too and remove grandfathered unlimited. Aside from that though, thanks for this update.
I wouldn't read a ton into all this stuff. And I don't know how good of an idea it is to publish someones personal/professional contact info for them on any forum...
I worked with verizon for a while, and on a daily basis I was upgrading phones and allowing customers to keep these 5 or 6 year old alltel rate plans.
It is absolutely correct that verizon can remove unlimited from grandfathered accounts if it wants to, but verizon's course of action with old alltel plans and the like, suggest that it won't happen.
I'm not saying it will or wont happen, all I'm saying is that its definitely possible that they will allow you to keep unlimited data, as long as you are playing nice and not DLing 100 gb's a month on their network.
I love all the misinformation, conjecture, an the posting of a professional email, signs of the derogation of society.
First: Yes VZW is charging an upgade fee. To say everyone is doing it is a cop out. To say that they are loosing money on equipment subsidies is true and the fee helps recap som of the cost while keeping prices competitive even with their own indirect partners.
Second, the only time you can loose a grandfathered plan per contractual agreement is a) older Altel devices that upgrade or change devices because there is no longer an Altel contract. b) you change to a basic (from smart) phone for over 30 days or c) you agree to it.
There are no exceptions to the three listed above. Don't believe me: 1800-922-0204 and ask for the loyalty department.
I love all the verizon fan boys who think they are the best and they would NEVER pull some thing over them like: taking away unlimited data, THROTTLING or the $30 "upgrade" fee.
The contract only lets you keep grandfathered plan's for the lenth of time you signed up for (AKA 2 years) and then They can make you sign a new contract with out unlimited data if you want to upgrade and if you don't upgrade, then they can just take it away.
Why is so easy for me to type this you may ask? Becuase they throttled me at 12Gb and now I can't go over about 10-15gb with out ricking this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCbvDEewcJU&feature=channel&list=UL
P.S I sit at 65GB on AT&T and no throttling. Eat that verizon
I really came in under the wire on this one. I upgraded about three months ago; still have my unlimited data. I never really understood why providers are simply eliminating unlimited plans rather than charging exorbitant amounts of money which plenty of people would pay.

Nope, this is what I think they will do. They are thinking about razing the price up as well to get every one off of it, like AT&T did the $20 unlimited to 30, but with more kick. I have herd every thing from 30 going up to 50, all the way to it replacing the 20GB plan.
Any way: They are going to do some thing soon and well I will just say it's not likely going to be good.

Pretty much the exact thing I heard when I called them a few weeks ago. I've been out of a contract for almost 6 years now (just lucky that my phone breaks when they dont have any more and get a free upgrade). I currently have a HTC Trophy with Windows Phone 7 and dont have a newer one because they have not gotten newer WP7 devices, YET.
I called them up and was asking on new devices and presented them with the same question. According to Verizon, I can buy a new Smartphone today, sign a new 2 year agreement and I still will not lose my unlimited data plan according to them.
Of course the day I do it, that will be my first question and will ask for it in writing
As of this moment you are not forced off of your unlimited plan when upgrading phones or switching between current phones

So it's ok for Verizon to publish her information on their public website, but not for me to copy and paste it from that site to this one? I will edit this post later to provid the direct link to Verizon's corporate PUBLIC website that lists this PUBLIC information. As a "former Verizon employee" you should know all about their public site and what's listed on it. Even if it wasn't Verizon does not respect its customers so I have no respect for their employees at the upper level management.
I will get you that link tomorrow (today really, but later). My nephew is having a bad night teething and is co sleeping next to me so this post is on my device not a pc or I would do it now.
Fyi I have never gone over 5gb on my cell. I don't abuse my unlimited. Oh and I am rooted and can tether for free. Not everyone deserves to be ppunished for the crimes of a few. Wish VZW would figure that out but in reality people abusing unlimited is just an excuse to increase profits, which gets their CEO a bigger bonus. It's all about the money. Corporate Greed.
Obviously were talking subsidized, not full retail. Verizon preorders keep their unlimited, but not Best Buy.
That's what both Best Buy and Verizon are telling me. I have a preorder at Verizon, and they say because when I preordered I accepted the new contract (with Verizon directly), I can keep my unlimited data. Best Buy however takes a deposit but does not renew your contract until the phone is available to purchase. This is because Best Buy is a reseller and can't renew a contract until a phone is physically sold.
Originally Best Buy was telling people they could keep their grandfathered unlimited data on GS3 preorders because at the time Verizon had not launched the new "Shared Everything" plans. Verizon had originally said that the new plans (which removed grandfathered unlimited data) would not happen till mid summer hence, your preordered GS3 at Best Buy would be in your hands activated before that date.
Today things changed. Verizon just released today a statement saying shared data starts June 28th which happens to be Best Buys SG3 release date. As stated above, even if you preordered at Best Buy, you don't sign a contract till the date you have the phone in hand and call to activate it with Verizon. When you pick up your phone on or after the June 28th you will be signing a new contract and grandfathered unlimited data will no longer be an option.
Congrats Best Buy GS3 PreOrder Customers! Verizon just found a way to screw you, and odds are they have no intention on telling you until it's too late. For the record, Best Buy was NOT lying to when they originally told you that you could keep your grandfathered unlimited data if you preordered, unless they told you this with in the last few hours. Verizon just released the new plan dates, and according to Best Buy they didn't know the change would happen this early. Hence, when they told you it was true, but now Verizon has changed things. Best Buy preorders are "subject to carriers discretion".
If Best Buy decides to keep quiet on this matter now that they know (and not tell preorders things have changed) then they are scumbags; because as of this afternoon store managers spoke with Verizon and this is what they were told.
Verizon apparently thought Best Buy releasing the phone early would cut into their profits, hence the not so coincidental release date of "Shared Everything" plans on June 28th. Also if they keep quiet then they get to drop a lot of people off of grandfathered unlimited data, which is exactly what they want. Even better they get to blame Best Buy for telling people wrong information.
Got to love Verizon. Bunch of dicks.

Obviously were talking subsidized, not.full retail.
Verizon just found a way to fk you in your bum and odds are they have no intention on telling you until it's too late. For the record, Best Buy was NOT lying to when they told you that you could keep your grandfathered unlimited data if you preordered before whatever date unless they told you this with in the last few hours. Verizon just released the new plan dates, and according to Best Buy they didn't know the change would happen this early. If Best Buy decides to keep quiet (and not tell preorders things have changed) then they are scumbags; because as of this afternoon store managers spoke with Verizon and this is what they were told.

Crap. Thank you for pointing that out, can a mod please move this to the correct forum section. I am really sorry!
My damn psu blew last night so these posts have been typed on my phone (what a pita!) using Tapatalk. I just started using it again and have no idea how to move topics. If I was on my pc I would have noticed this was the wrong section.
Thanks for pointing it out!
Thats not what I was told by three different VZW people.
"Good evening Chris,
Congratulations on your new phone! I know how exciting it is to get new devices. My name is Nikki and it'd be my pleasure to review the data package for you.
After reviewing your account, I see you already spoke with one of our great customer service representatives and they were able to confirm your request. I just wanted to confirm again for you that yes, you will be able to keep your unlimited data plan.
I'm glad we were able to assist you. Thank you for being the best part of Verizon Wireless and have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Nikki
Verizon Wireless
Customer Service"
My original email them before calling and confirming the same thing.

Message Body: Hello, earlier today I preordered the new Samsung Galaxy S III from BestBuy. While I was there I asked the mobile manager if he could confirm that by placing my preorder today that my unlimited data would be grandfathered into my upgrade. He said he was not positive and the best thing would be to call VZW. I called and spoke with a nice woman who after asking her supervisor said that yes I would be keeping my unlimited data plan by preordering today through BestBuy. I am now reading online today that people are being told that the will not be guaranteed their unlimited data if they preorder through BestBuy. I would like to confirm that what I was told earlier by your support staff was correct and that I will indeed still have the same plan for voice and data when I go to pick up my new phone from BestBuy, even though it is after the official shared data plan pricing change that is going into effect. Thank you"
Best thing to do would be to call them and ask, if they say yes ask them if they could please mark that onto your account so that when you do get the phone and go to activate it they see that you have been told that you can indeed keep your unlimited data package.
Is it possible to switch phones temporarily to grandfather unlimited?
I have two phones on a family share, both with unlimited data. I have a Razr I bought used and am already on 4G, grandfathered unlimited. My wife is eligible but still using her Droid X because we're not sure what phone she wants.
Is it possible for me to move my Razr to her line temporarily so that 4G is activated on the line, and then switch it back?
(I found this thread because I was trying to figure out if preordering worked to protect unlimited, so thanks OP!)
I just called VZW to get my daily update on the GSIII (lol still hasn't shipped) and while I was on the phone I asked the guy about the situation you mentioned. It's rare I get a CS person who knows what they are talking about, though this guy seemed to be on point. I would still call yourself and have it noted on your account, but from what he said you don't need to do anything.
He explained that in the system, 3g/4g are listed on the account separate from the data plan itself and only denounced whether the phone had a sim card. If you look at your bill you will see 3g/4g is listed on a different line of the bill then the unlimited data package. From what he said, if you have 3g unlimited then you already have 4g it's just not listed because the 3g phone does not have a sim card. He also said if you did what you wrote above they would add the 4g but would remove it as soon as you switched the phone back to 3g.
He said that 3g/4g feature on the account was irrelevant, and only the unlimited data plan feature mattered. Lastly, he reminded me that any phone bought after the 28th of this month that was not full retail price, would result in a plan change and loss of unlimited.
I asked him again one final time, so if I were to have a line with unlimited data but only 3g on the account, and I upgraded to a 4g device after the July 28th but paid full price, would I get 4g unlimited and he said yes. He repeated himself stating the 3g/4g part was not part of the plan rather something the system adds for your account to work properly. Again he said the unlimited data (in general) part is what mattered.
I would take it cautiously optimistic, and then call VZW and have them put a note on my account saying you will not loose unlimited. Good luck!

Came across this earlier. Called Sprint to see if I qualified... What a joke. They said I couldn't bc I activated my device too early (release date) and I had another phone on the contract. I'm going to drop them soon, but I'm case they care about any other customers, you might try your luck.

Before looking on their website I figured I would ask you since you are already a Sprint customer. Do they offer any kind of unlimited data plan currently? I am with Verizon and still on their old unlimited data plan right now but I am always curious if I can get a better price elsewhere. For years it was annoying because I couldn't get a device through Verizon or else I would loose unlimited so I've had to trade phones here and there to get new ones. I got lucky this time and got a Pixel from Best Buy for basically $140. The deal was $240 technically but I also got a hundred dollar gift card
So yea just curious about any unlimited plans sprint offeres I remember hearing Tmobile had unlimited again but there was some kind of catch to the plan.. I think you only got 480p video or something
thanks!

There is unlimited. I'm on it now but it's "optimized" data. I haven't noticed any drops in quality but I don't use my data that much for more than music streaming. I'm on Wi-Fi basically all the time.
