Samsung Captivate for At&t - launching in July 18 - $199 - Galaxy S I9000 General

http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/samsung-captivate-coming-to-atandt-on-july-18-for-200/
Launching July 18th
$199 with contract ))
$350 off contract eek: what?!)

At $350, it's a steal. Would I be able to grandfather my unlimited data plan in if I got it off contract? I believe it's a part of the unlimited family data plan.

where'd you see that $350 off contract price?

http://www.facebook.com/ATT?v=wall&story_fbid=413195983908
Amidst the many comments.
"AT&T Hi Mark - the Captivate is $199.99 w/ contract, and $349.99 without."

thats legit! imma get one of this bad boys!!!

Can't wait to ditch my iPhone!

Can't wait to ditch my touch diamond.
However, I'm new to android. Does anyone know a thread or something that explains all the terminology (like what adb is) and how to flash a custom ROM?
I've also read people saying that you can install 3rd party apps without sideloading?

Custom SGS ROM + Guide for Flashing

$350... Twice the phone as an iPhone for half the cost. It's a bargain.
FYI, after this release TMobile actually moved the date on their Vibrant up to the 15th

$350!?!? I might not have to move to sprint with this price.
If they dont force into a text/data plan like the iPhone i should be great with my grandfathered plan.
at that price i might buy it just because. (no i'm not rich)
update:
Samsung Captivate, our next Android device, will be available starting July 18th at AT&T retail locations and online for $199.99 (with voice plan and minimum $15 data service required on two-year service contract)
never mind. I'll be going to Sprint when the Galaxy Pro hit's them.

Minimum $15 data plan required... is that 15 dollars for unlimited data? Compared to the recently deceased $30 unlimited iPhone plan?

That's with a new contract
If you have an "old" data plan (even if it's the iPhone data plan), they'll grandfather you in on the old "unlimited" (5GB) plans which are $30/mo. I was going to replace my iPhone and called them to make sure it'd work like that and they said it would.

I'll go through the premier site to see if I can buy the phone without being forced into a new contract like the iphone. I'm currently on att fuze with a $39.99 450 voice, $20 data/sms (unlimited data, 200 txt). My bill is around $63 with taxes. If in fact I have to to get a new contract to use this phone on ATT then i might as well go to sprint and get unlimited everything for about $15+ . My company offers discounts through sprint & att.

The guide is pathetic, it doesn't explain the terminology like what these things the guide are telling me to install.
Also we don't know if an SGS ROM will work on the captivate. Potentially bricking? Thanks for the advice.

I'm pretty sure I still currently have the $15/mo unlimited data, without texting or mms or anything, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to keep it without them forcing me into picking up one of their new, limited data plans. In my account information, I actually see the option to upgrade to the $30/mo unlimited messaging and data, but I'm afraid to choose it out of fear that once I do, they'll put me on one of their new crappy limited plans and tell me I'm out of luck, since I switched away from what I already had.

Chill out for a minute! The Captivate isn't even out yet, neither are any of the US Galaxy S phones, so many things are unknown still. In a couple of weeks, we'll all know a whole lot more with certainty!

Well, I'm still looking for a guide to android. Something that explains everything inside out. I guess I have to look at developer docs to find out.

Sprint evo Plan Pricing SUCKS!!!

I got the email from sprint regarding the evo release date and pricing. The phone will be 199.99 with 100.00 mail in rebate. The plan will be 69.99 or business plan of (starting at) 59.99 PLUS a data buy up plan for 10.00 on top of the plan. I think this is bull crap. Let me know how you feel about this $10 bucks extra for having this phone. I dont really care about 4G especially since its not available in my area

imon an unlimnited everything plan atm so 10 $ more a month is nothing for a beast of a phone
What, is an additional ten dollars a month too much for you to pay? AT&T and Verizon both charge a LOT more for their plans.
Compared to Verizon and ATT, I'd take Sprints 4G network and unlimited data use for 10 dollars more. Thanks.
$10 for a true UNLIMITED data plan?? Definately well worth it. Im on the Everything Unlimited plan, so my plan wont change with the EVO, I will still have Unlimited everything, and also a wifi hotspot. AWESOME!!!!!!!
$10 is $10 so I would rather hold on to it in my pocket.......but it looks as if I will be paying it, NP

The 10$ isn't just for 4G. It's for premium services. Ask anyone on ATT, VZW, T-Mo if they would like to pay 10 dollars extra for truly unlimited data, with no cap and see what they say.

Incorrect. Its 10 dollars on top of any plan for the Evo.
Of course I'm going to pay it! I'm not going to let a $10 increase stop me from getting the best handheld device available in the US.
I've been a Sprint customer for 12 years and price increases every couple of years are common. Phones get progressively more complex and data demands increase. When I went from a smart phone (Fuze) to a PDA phone (Diamond) the required plan increase was $10. That was 2 years ago so I am actually relieved that the increase for the EVO is ONLY $10.
Im trying to think of all the stuff i waste $10 on a month........p0rn, wendys, etc.....

I just made sure with my Sprint rep... ;-) Even Dan Hesse himself said no additional cost durring CTIA this year... I have talked to two different reps on this issue because customers were asking me the same thing... The 59.99 is for the Sprint Business Advantage Messaging and Data then you pay the 10 extra bringing it up to the 69.99, or... If you're already a Sprint individual consumer account on the 69.99 Everything Data Plan, the Evo is covered... They claim there is nothing in there system under the Everything Data Plan for such a feature and have not been notified of that feature even being added... They are currently on a 4 week training course gearing up for launch and nothing had been said...
I went to best buy and pre ordered one device. I was going to get two but with the extra $10q the wife will inherit my hero instead.

I think your Sprint rep is wrong.
http://jbtaylor.posterous.com/more-detail-on-the-sprint-evo-4g-10month-prem
Do price increases suck? Yes. Is Sprint still cheaper than the competition and probably raising prices because they've been bleeding money for years? Yes. You can't really compare this to, say, cable companies who just raise prices because they can (having monopolies in many areas and all). Especially considering sprint is introducing cut-rate prepaid plans (a blackberry for $35/mo with unlimited text and data?), it's hard to complain about their flagship phone/network costing a little extra. If you want cheaper options, they're out there, but you won't get an EVO on them
The ONLY problem I have with the plan is that initially it was said (in various places) that there was not going to be an extra charge. As a matter of fact, it was even said in one of the early videos of the phone...

Stop Complaining about the EVO's pricing

I am extremely excited for friday to come around so I can get the EVO, that being said I have been on here alot today, and have watched alot of youtube videos.
But all of the people on here complaining about the $10 extra charge being a "deal breaker for them" is hands down the most stupid thing I have ever heard.
People the $10 extra charge is for 4G/Unlimited 3G.
This phone is like the iPhone and allows you to use ALOT of data. I don't understand how people see a phone with a 4.3 inch screen, 1ghz processor, 4G, and a list of other features and will willingly pay $200 for it, but then $10 extra month is unquestionable.
Look at what you are getting from Sprint. Sprint is IMO the best company, their prices are dirt cheap, and they truly give you everything you want.
Look at the pricing for the EVO
EVO
$79.99 per month
You get
unlimited mobile to mobile
unlimited texting
unlimited data
free calls after 7 P.M.
free turn by turn navigation from sprint
450 minutes
For $79.99
Now
the iPhone on AT&T is still $10 more expensive every month, and now Verizon and AT&T are making people get a data plan on certain phones that are not considered "smart phones"
I have a problem with paying an extra $10 per month. I already pay them $160 per month (about) for my family "unlimited" plan. 4G isn't even in my state! I planned on buying the phone out of contract... they are not subsidizing my phone in any way.
You can say "well you should be thankful it's not xxxx amount because that's what yyyyyy carrier charges you". Yeah well I'm not with yyyyyy carrier I'm with Sprint. If Sprint is going to nickel and dime me up to yyyyy's price I'll just switch because it pisses me off (been with sprint about 9 years).
If I keep my Touch Pro 2 I don't have to pay this surcharge.... if I buy this new phone that they want people to buy it will cost me an extra $120 per year for the same service i'm already getting. Most I've burned through is about 10 GB's per month under my current "unlimited" plan and never been charged extra.
Make sense to you? Not to me.
$10 more for AT&T??
Way more...
- First off, the iPhone 3GS is $299 with 2 year contract (you CANNOT get upgrade pricing after 12 months like we do on Sprint.)
- Secondly, when comparing nearly identical offerings on Sprint vs AT&T, I just got $185/mo, NOT including taxes.
That's more than double. Just select iPhone and basically all the highest options (other than highest voice,) and that's what you already get on Sprint.

buh-bye. Good luck paying $180 on any other carrier, for what we get for $80.
I did not say one word about either the Iphone or AT&T.
My point is this.... I can keep my current phone (hd 2 nice but I'm sick of winmo) and not pay the $10/month surcharge. So when I buy a new phone out of contract I am paying Sprint an extra 120/year FOR NOTHING. THEY ARE DOING NOTHING MORE FOR ME NEXT MONTH THEN THEY ARE DOING FOR ME TODAY YET I AM PAYING THEM MORE.
Don't get me wrong... phone is awesome and I want it, but this 10/month thing pisses me off. It's the principal of it not the amount.

List me all of the features you have on your plan, (how many lines, what phones, and what plans you have)
And I guarentee it will be cheaper on Sprint. Than on AT&T and verizon or tmobile.
You will consider leaving sprint after 9 years and paying an ETF, but actually figuring out the costs and features you get on sprint v. the other carriers is unquestionable, correct?
Please list your features, untill you do that and show everyone how the other carriers are cheaper, you don't have a fair point.

The only way to compare is to have unlimited ANY MOBILE calling... AT&T doesn't have this option, so you'd have to put on unlimited calling.
You also need to add corporate messaging/etc, because Sprint has all that included. Yes, not everyone needs that, but for those who do, it adds up.
Also, you must add unlimited route navigation.
I think you get the idea. It's hard to do a pure apples-to-apples comparison, but even when you get close, it's drastically more expensive on AT&T.

$10 a month. Putting that into perspective, that's one time out in a Thai restaurant. IMHO I can live without thai food for a day and just put those $10 toward Evo which I will use EVERY DAY of the month... can't complain here
Geez... again I don't think you see my point. Let me try to rephrase a little bit.
If this $10 surcharge was across every single data-plan regardless of phone I would not be complaining, I would take my lumps and deal with it.
This $10 is for owners of the HTC Evo 4g only. That is my problem.
Example:
So if you lived in my area where there's no 4g, and had an EVO 4g your bill would be $10 more than mine with a Touch Pro 2 even though we're both on the same Simply Everything Plan using the same EVDO/3g network. (pretend I only have one line)

Hey Tadda why don't you go to your facebook page and cry. Don't buy the F****N phone and stay the **LL off this board.
!
the 10$ extra isnt for 4G..
Sprint looks at it like this, You just bought a bad ass phone, and your gonna wanna see what it can do. so your gonna start using WAY MORE DATA now.. 10$ for unlimited data.. or 30 from AT&T .. your choice..
And if you wanna see the price difference go to att.com and look at the prices. Stop arguing like a bunch of girls.
Are we still on this $10.00 a month?
Let's see AT&T so far has removed for new users the unlimited plan. Charges $15 for 200MB or $25 for 2GB. It's like they are pushing for people to find their local Starbucks to do their surfing.
$69.99 - Unlimited everything mobile to mobile + 450 mins anywhere. No roaming.
$10.00 for 4G phone which in return gives 5GB(cap) that has not been really enforced when you go over a few GB's or 4GB Unlimited. Can't have a WiMax Hotspot and CAP the speeds.
Free Telenav Sprint NAV turn by turn usually a $10.00 a month feature on AT&T.
So for $79.99 you get all of that and then some.
AT&T for the most part charges:
$69.99 unlimited talk
$20.00 unlimited text
$30.00 Unlimited capped data at 5GB not $25.00 for 2GB
$10.00 for TeleNav
So for $129.99 a month you get AT&T.
If you want to get apples to apples then we can go to the Simply Everything plan which is $99.99 and it gives you unlimited everything + $10.00 4G and you have $109.00 with Unlimited Calls to Mobile and Landlines.
With Verizon you have:
$69.99 unlimited talk
$20.00 unlimited text
$29.99 unlimited data - not to include enterprise data such as blackberry
$44.99 unlimited Enterprise Data
As you can see the Sprint has no caps on data like the other two. So how can one really complain about the pricing. It's a BIG difference and to have all these people and mags complain about $10.00 is a JOKE!
I hope to be happy with my Sprint Service. I don't like change often but I am willing to make the leap.
What your not considering is what if you DON'T NEED unlimited voice minutes? It's great that Sprint is cheaper when comparing unlimited plans, but I for one, only use 200-400 mins a month total between 2 lines. So a 550 family plan with AT&T is just fine, I don't need unlimited with Sprint or even the 1500 minutes there giving us with the Evo's. I would rather pay Sprint less, since I will be using less. But they force you into a Everything plan for smartphones.
All carriers have their ups and downs.
AT&T has the fastest 3g network, but poor coverage/prices
Verizon has the largest 3g network, but poor prices
Tmobile has...umm..good prices
Sprint has good network, good prices, poor phone choices.
With Sprints Evo tax, we save ~10.00 dollars a month switching from AT&T with our current 2 x 3gs's. That is not a lot of money to save, especially since AT&T's data speeds are about twice as fast as Sprints in this area. So the Evo tax is a big deal. We have a pre-order in, I am extremely excited, we will test them out, and if we both like them, we will switch. But if they disappoint like the Pre's did, then they go back and we will keep our iphones.
Now if Sprint didn't charge the Evo tax, we would save 30.00 a month. With that kind of savings, we could accept a few snags here and there and would for sure dump AT&T.

HTC Aria available for free from Dell

Of course, I found out about this about 3 hours after buying my Aria in an actual AT&T store...
There is also no activation charge, and even is available for existing/upgrading AT&T users.

Seems like you don't get the option to keep your existing plan features though. I just tried and there isn't an option to keep my $30/month unlimited data plan.
But .... what do we think of it ?
My free Aria is winging its way to me as we speak!
I was on the cusp of going with either the iPhone 3GS or the Aria. The unexpected freeness of the latter, coupled with the solid reviews it's getting, and the (IMO) relatively easy method of bypassing AT&T's third-party-app limitations, made it a no-brainer.
Free Arias
When I checked into the free phones, I found out that they don't have the lower-end calling plans (450 minutes) and you can't keep your old unlimited data plan -- so that free phone will cost you a lot more in just a few months.
Just called wirefly and dell and the aria is only free for the primary line on family plans =( to upgrade the addon line it's either $70 or $80. Called amazon and they said it was still $50.
It looks to me like wirefly will give two free phones as long as the primary line is one of the upgrades, but I guess I'll call them now to be sure. I did notice that if you are upgrading a line that isn't primary on the family plan they say to call.
Free

But, yeah, mine was the primary line. I could have gotten it through AT&T for $29, because of some kind of "Upgrade Advantage" thingy. I hadn't upgraded in about 3 1/2 years... maybe that was why.
450 minute option is available on Dell
I was able to order from Dell with a 450 minute plan. The offer defaults to a higher minute plan but the option exists to reduce the minutes. Also beware that many of optional features (text plans, insurance, AT&T Navigation) are preselected for purchase. You can decline these before ordering with the exception of a data plan.

How did you manage that? Did you just go through the website or something?
I haven't upgraded since 2007 and mine shows up as 129.99. It also says I can't keep my grandfathered unlimited data plan and I'd have to downgrade to their 2gb plan.
Speaking of that, has anyone successfully bought an Aria and managed to keep their unlimited plan?
Problem is this phone really should be free from AT&T on contract. With the new ETF it takes 8 months on contract unitl the ETF+ the cost of the contract phone would be less than buying the phone non-contract. Compare that to the iPhone it is already $85 cheaper than the non-contract price right off the bat if you add the cost on-contract + ETF.
Granted this only really matters if you break a contract but the ETF is to help recoup the cost of the subsidized handset if you break it. In this case if it happens within the first 8 months they make more money off you than having bought the phone.
Bottom line is they have this handset overpriced. It is bad enough if you go to a corp store it is more money upfront than an iPhone .

If you upgrade your plan to 900 minutes it's still free. I'll just give them a call and downgrade my minutes.
Is it possible to switch your secondary line to the primary line for the upgrade? My primary line isn't due till next year but my secondary is due for an upgrade. Like someone said before through wirefly and stuff the secondary line has to pay for the upgrade.

Beats me... it showed up on my AT&T site for $29, but I got it from Dell for free. And I downgraded my plan and my son's plan to $15 a month, since the most either of us have ever used was 85 MB in a single mont.

Is Tmobile Sim only plans month by month or long term?

Hi everyone.
I'm getting the Nexus 4 launch day, but I don't have Tmobile nor do I know how it even works.. I'm looking to do a sim only plan since I will buy the phone from the play store.
So my question is.. Are the plans monthly? or long term? If so, what's the cheapest plan with data and unlimited texting? I don't need a lot of minutes. I've looked at the Tmobile site, but to be honest its kind of confusing..
also would it be worth it to upgrade to nationwide 4g? I'm currently at UCF so if anyone knows that would be awesome!
Thank you in advance!
its monthly with $30 per month with unlimited web/data(capped at 5gb)

One of their Monthly 4G plan for $30 (they have two plans for $30) comes with "Unlimited" Data 5Gb 4G, rest is miserably slow. unlimited texting and 100 minutes. I use it, If you don't use minutes that often it's great. I've only went over my 5Gb once, so unless you stream HD videos you should be fine. I listen to slacker almost everyday while i'm at work and have yet to go over.
It's only available if you order the Sim online and activate it on their website, or go to Wal-Mart.
As for the Sim-only plans, the Value Plans, I'm pretty sure they're contract plans. They don't advertise them as being pre-paid.
You just get a cheaper plan because you're not paying an extra $10 a month for getting a $400 for free or whatver.

this is my approach, just left verizon. I have the sim card waiting at home already, will go get a micro-sim on nov 13th, order the phone, wait and win. I utilize google voice, so voice/messaging doesn't matter to me and 5gb will not be "enough" but it'll be ok for the $30 a month

Does this include the "4g", and where do you see this deal? I've looked through the Tmobile plans and I haven't seen that one.
Edit:didn't refresh lol

Sprint Pixel discount

http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/1...ount-credits-activate-pixel-might-ask-nicely/
Came across this earlier. Called Sprint to see if I qualified... What a joke. They said I couldn't bc I activated my device too early (release date) and I had another phone on the contract. I'm going to drop them soon, but I'm case they care about any other customers, you might try your luck.

Before looking on their website I figured I would ask you since you are already a Sprint customer. Do they offer any kind of unlimited data plan currently? I am with Verizon and still on their old unlimited data plan right now but I am always curious if I can get a better price elsewhere. For years it was annoying because I couldn't get a device through Verizon or else I would loose unlimited so I've had to trade phones here and there to get new ones. I got lucky this time and got a Pixel from Best Buy for basically $140. The deal was $240 technically but I also got a hundred dollar gift card
So yea just curious about any unlimited plans sprint offeres I remember hearing Tmobile had unlimited again but there was some kind of catch to the plan.. I think you only got 480p video or something
thanks!

There is unlimited. I'm on it now but it's "optimized" data. I haven't noticed any drops in quality but I don't use my data that much for more than music streaming. I'm on Wi-Fi basically all the time.
