Will the epic have dev community like the evo or no

How would anyone know that......
The only way anyone would know that is in time. You will need to watch the community grow.

Not sure if the EPIC 4G will have all on it's own, but I do see there is a lot of support for the Galaxy S series.. CDMA usually get less dev support than GSM devices, but that has been changing lately.
XDA used to cater mostly to HTC devices.. They have since expanded to different manufacturers.. And there is also the SDX Dev community...

nope never. the devs are all working now for Sprint and are going to charge for their ROMs
Right now, what I can see, it looks like joeykrim and noobnl and a couple of others or so are cracking away at it. Most of the "action" seems to be happening over at sdx atm.
Unless some of the devs from the other galaxy s phones come over here and share the love, I think "we" might be on our own (so to speak). I saw a few placeholders for roms in the dev section. They might be doing stuff behind the scenes too.
Now I don't have too much free time on my hands. One thing I was pondering was if someone gathered the info from the other galaxy s phones and tried to determine what, if any, might be similarities under the hood. Like was rooting different, same or similar between models? The only apparent difference seems to be the epic has flash led and hardware keyboard. I don't know how much those two things could possibly change the structure of things (hardware and software) between all the models. I suspect there will be quite a few similarities after the dust settles.

They problem is that the epic cant use roms from the other sgs phones like the others can because of the camera, keyboard & touchwiz changes. The drivers are not fully released so I am unsure how porting roms to the epic would work out. I think the epic cant really depend on the other sgs phones for development.

I agree with you 100%. I get 27% discount from work and that still could not get me to keep the epic for more then 1 day. I cant believe all the apps\features they left out that the others sgs phones have.
SDX is hard at work on it and the devs there, and some of the users/testers (me), are trying to keep both sides (XDA and SDX) informed on anything that happens on either side.
SDX is really a great community; I've been with them since I purchased my Moment. And it's only because of them that my phone was usable.
I expect that all the missing features and more will be added to the Epic before too long especially if both communities work together with no drama.
I know everyone loves custom roms, but what is it that we want to see from the dev community?
As much as I would love to see custom roms flying out of every orifice, I only loaded custom roms on my EVO to get it up to speed (fps hack, better performance, etc). Also to increase battery life... but it didn't seem to help THAT much.
I'm pretty content with my Epic. The everyday stuff I do on this phone already works perfectly. Games, movies, music, web browsing, camera, etc. It's nuts how fast it is, so I won't be needing to overclock. The only thing I want to see from the dev community right now is root+nand unlocked. I must have root access... it's killing me.
Hey all,
While looking on an Austrailan Android news website I stumbled across this post, which basically confirms the fears and worst nightmares of Atrix 4G owners.
http://ausdroid.net/2011/04/26/the-little-aussie-taking-on-motorola-u-s/
Seems the bootloader solution is only going to apply to future 2011 devices, and only if carriers allow it.
-Sigh- I'm glad we still have some talented Dev's working the case! They're doing great things for everyone and I encourage you donate generously!
Thanks

I think it means devices that are current, but not starting until late 2011.

ahh yes fair point, I sorta read it quite quickly in hopes for an answer
Fat chance AT&T ever allows this on the Atrix. They got your subsidized phone fee and locked you in for 2 years, do you honestly think they care whether or not the bootloader is unlocked? *queue imperial march*
Hey, at least thats a start, if not this phone...maybe their next phone will be unlocked. You have to think big picture....in about a year this phone will become obsolete, just like the nexus one. You're already starting to see phones that are about to come out with 1.2ghz Tegra chip...can you imagine in another year..we might go 2ghz or maybe a quad core.
You have to think about this, the Motorola Xoom was unlocked because Google designed it with them. That IS the developer tablet. The Atrix wasn't made for developer reasons, i'm pretty sure Motorola was using this phone as a Guinea pig.
I can see why ALOT of people went to the Inspire, Bigger screen, HTC quality, and you have a phone that you can mod. Some of us are staying with this phone just on hopes that later it might be unlocked. For all we know, this phone may be locked for good.
I love my atrix even with the locked bootloader. I can't mod it as much as I'd like but Greyblur/Gingerblur are great and I'm very happy with the performance of the phone. It is only going to get better when 2.3/2.4 gets shipped OTA. I am happy with my decision to keep the Atrix instead of returning it. Even with it's flaws it is the best phone I've ever owned.
AT&Trap would save $

If you kept the same phone longer and kept their service they wouldn't have to pony up the subsidized new phone every two years and would save in the end. I think it would be in their better interest aside from tethering hacks which we already have.
Motorola using Xoom as an example is a slap to every other Motorola device owner. Xoom is a Google Experience tablet and they were forced to provide an unlock just like the Nexus One/S.

That is assuming you don't jump ship to a new carrier for a newer/better phone that isn't offered on AT&T. Their primary interest is keeping you locked into contract with them for as long as possible, since they make far more over the 2 years of a contract than a phone is worth.

I'm waiting to hear clarification from Motorola on which devices will be included.
Will let everyone know when I have an answer.
Hope Motorola is not saying this to get people to slow down the protest. I won't believe anything till Motorola publicly announces this new info. Reps say about anything through email.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm wondering from a dev's perspective if a Epic Touch will be similar to the Epic in terms of development. I really love the EPIC and we are lucky to have a solid list of good dev's. But there has always been that road block for us because our hardware was so different. I had a Hero before this phone and needless to say I miss the huge community, but overall I've liked the EPIC ton's more because the hardware/speed is so awesome. Is this something we can expect with the Galaxy S2 series? And is this just a matter of people just know HTC better so dev'ing for one of their phones is just more familiar to everyone, or is Samsung just making our phones overly complicated to dev?
The development community will be much bigger, simply because the SGS2 is the most popular phone in every country it's in. So of course when it hits US it's going to be very popular.
Hardware is closer to the other variants than the epic was to is, so it should be better. Also, Verizon's not getting it, so that should bring some devs over here. The only difference seems to be CDMA and that only takes a few files, so ports should be much easier.
It'll be similar because we still have 4g and different builds along with carriers putting all their extra junk in it. However, we should at least be all running the same software wise this time. We will still be last receiving updates because GSM networks always get them first.

Why? Is it because the phone is unpopular with the dev community, or because it's hard to build for this phone? There isn't even any UNofficial CyanogenMod being made.
This is why I love the Nexus line of devices.. so much development even before the product gets released. The lack of Moto X development is making me iffy about purchasing one
I had actually just assumed this would have had a ton of ROMs by now until I saw your thread pop up. I have to say visiting the dev section I'm shocked. It definitely crosses an X off my list as I was leaning G2 or One anyway.
agreed im trying to sell my x for a Nexus 5

I feel ya. Got roped into joining Verizon and got the most Nexus like modern phone available (the X). At least the stock ROM is great. Once things slow down at my day job I'll see what I can do to help the Moto X Dev community. Seems that with Verizon I'll need to root and unlock just to get the normal updates other carriers get (without waiting sometime between 6 months and hell freezing over)

Development takes time the device is still new. It won't have nearly as much as the nexus line bit people are working on it.

I find it funny how people "demand" that there be development. I'd imagine that the phone is hard and somewhat unknown to work on with the X8 chipset....Time. all good things come with time. even if they dont all this phone needs is root and xposed.

agreed completely. Why would you expect a brand new phone with brand new chipset would magically get great roms. people have to learn what is going on just how the OP is learning that things come with time.
not like i miss the dev on this phone, i mean it's pretty much aosp
what else were you expecting?
most roms out there are aosp based

Yea I figure as long as we have root, the stock ROM should be good enough with Motorola's tweaks.
I've read a thread similar to this on all of my phones from the OG galaxy S (captivate). I would say give it some time, heck the dev edition only came out a few weeks ago.
The fact that its impossible to unlock the bootloader on the major carriers is another bottleneck as well. If/when theres a bootloader unlock, the development will come.
Are roms even necessary though? I've always been a terrible crack flasher, but this rom with xposed and gravity box it's pretty much cyanogen. I'm super happy with stock for the first time ever

The Moto X uses a Qualcomm S4 Pro SoC. It was never anything special. Motorola just markets the additional processors as a whole to make the concept easier to understand. Development would be similar to any other new phone.
Porting popular ROMs while retaining the functionality of Active Notifications and Touchless Control may/may not be whole different ball game though.
The X is impressive for a standard carrier device, but nothing will beat a Nexus. I would say The X is, by far, the closest to stock you'll find (again, outside a nexus).
The Moto bloat is slipped in almost unnoticeably and the junk apps are easy to deal with (I actually find some of the 'bloat' well done, such as moto assist - though I still prefer tasker). Happiest off the shelf device I've had since the ogDroid, but hoping to get an N5 for real Dev stuff.

Great, I'll root once we get decent AOSP builds!
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'd probably agree with MrNegative there. Given their track record, it's painfully clear that Samsung has no intention to sell directly to the customer - meaning they will never unlock their bootloader as their contract forbids it. So, unless some rogue employee leaks all of their internal software or a massive exploit is found, my hopes of an AOSP rom on Snapdragon is pretty low - especially when TWRP essentially relies on it.
Is Samsung to blame? Not really. It's the carriers who want branded devices and to push "their" experience onto you. Locking a bootloader, aside for security, also ensures that you can't tamper with their software and harm their brand.
If you want Snapdragon, a better bet is Google or OnePlus - the companies that don't use cancer like CSC and sell directly to the customer.
I am however very grateful that someone took upon the task of developing an AOSP port for the Exynos chipset. Video looks awesome, and I can't wait.
Well, yeah you're right. I can't argue with that mate. Just to be clear I'm not a mean person, I just expect the worst so I'm not let down.
