Proud new 10.1 owner...Thinking of rooting..

does rooting this tab and isntalling a custom rom make a huge difrence as far as speed and battery life? im interrested in doing it, but want to make sure it is worth it...i know it always has been on my android phones...
thoughts?

Personally, I believe it to be an improvement. I'm running Paris v4 rom at the moment and it's exceptionally fast and smooth. I noticed lag when sliding between screens without the rom and it annoyed me enough to try Paris. I would never go back.
Rooting lets you fully use your Tab imho.

im a new owner too, and i wanna know does the rooting break the warrenty from the seller or can you unroot it if something happends to it ??

It can be unrooted. not sure on the warranty question.

I have always believed in staying stock until rooting and ROM'ing my G2x. The difference was more than night and day; more like the sun and the planet that was, Pluto. I took the plunge with my GTab 10.1 after going through hell with the stock OS. task650 and Phantom's "In Paris" v4 ROM will make you wonder why you didn't do it earlier!

You are doing your Tab & yourself injustice if you don't root it.
Having a Titanium Backup of your apps comes in handy & among other stuff.

Starting a post with a general insult, writing in huge font, and giving no useful information. Over 2000 posts, called "recognized developer," and you're still trolling? Bad form, dude.
+1 for installing a custom ROM. Sure, anyone using these forums should know that rooting won't do any of this for you. But a custom ROM will...

Don't listen to anyone but yourself on this issue. Go to the development section and look over some of the ROMs posted and what they offer in terms of features/improvements. Then read some of the user reviews/comments in those threads, as well as any particular issues any of the ROMs are having. Then take a look at what you can do with root access that you can't without it.
Then I would say use your tab for a few days. If you feel yourself wanting to try out those ROMs or those things that need root, than do it. If your device makes you happy as is and you don't feel like doing it, than don't. That's the best advice anyone can give.

Installing a custom ROM is a good reason, however this guy obviously has no clue what is or what it does.
Recommending that anyone "root" is totally bad information 100% bad information.

If someone EVER asks "Should I root"? The answer should ALWAYS be "no".
Remember this line: With great power, comes great responsibility.
Would you give a gun to someone who does not know how to use it? Root has the same potential to destroy your device as a gun has to kill you. Rooting just to "root" is ridiculously dangerous and should never be done.
How many times have you seen someone say "Hey, I've rooted my device, what cool apps can I run"? You don't root your device and then look for things to run.
If someone asks "Should I root my device" and has no reason, the answer is NO! under no circumstances should you root your device unless you have a reason you NEED root capabilities.

I'm not real into Android Dev humor, but I know computers (Windows) almost inside and out. I take it this would be the Android version of the common joke "Delete System32"?
What exactly does that command do, if I may ask?

He clearly stated in the OP that he has rooted his previous android devices and put roms on them. He was specifically asking if he should with THIS device.
He was maybe wondering if the device is fast enough to not need a custom rom. The answer to his question:
No device is fast enough :-D
And definitely not this one.

i think I read some post that if you root your tablet that the android market place will not let you purchase movies ... not sure if that is still true or not

@OP: I've rooted some other devices and when I picked up this device I was unsure... I finally did it one day after reading and reading and reading and watching a video or two I rooted... I flashed the overcome 1.2.1 rom and it really made a noticeable difference in speed. This was my reason to root my device and its good enough for me and if I damage it then its my fault and I take the hit for it simple enough...

I was in your exact same position a couple weeks ago, try rooting it and flashing " in parisv4" youll love it. Night and day speed difference

Edited:I rooted my Gtab so that I can play Hulu and be able to take advantage of the custom roms tweaks like the ability to overclock/underclock. More quality apps on the market like juice defender, Titanium backup, wifikiller, wifitether and so much more when rooted. Yes if your just looking to change the look of your home screen then just go download a launcher. But sine I rooted its hard to go back to stock. Currently I'm using Bindroid v2.0

There's no "need" to root. Running ADW allows me to customize the look, and to be honest, I don't get screen lag. People want to run custom roms... great. Does it do anything other than let you feel more in control? Not really. As for Hulu, I don't find myself wanting to watch much that's on there. Now... if you had said HBOGO, that would be a different story.

+1. Rooting is considered a toy. But it is very dangerous indeed... I have come acroos apps that can brick a device irreversibly. And, yeah, it voids the warranty, although you can unroot.

I was running stock since end of July and then touchwiz... eventually I got bored and needed "a fix" in the form of rooting and custom rom =)
This is a fancy toy so once you get bored I would start looking into root/custom rom. Not before then.. Btw, Task650 & Phantoms In Paris v5 is a very nice rom to start with!

Debating on Rooting the S4

Im a pure n00b. I'm About to buy my first droid phone. Im very knowledgeable about iphones and the jailbreak world but I'm not sure what would be the benefit of rooting a droid phone. I've heard the droid community is pretty wide open without rooting.
What would be some benefits of rooting a phone like the samsung galaxy s4? I did see that it will allow you to tweak bluetooth to connect a ps3 controller to it wirelessly for emulators but is it anything else that XDA could share to help push me in that direction? any cool features?

I'd say the biggest benefit from rooting is getting rid of that crap that both Samsung and AT&T put on the S4

First thing, droid phones are from Motorola. Call all others android phones. It will save some unnecessary flaming.
Pretty much still running the stock rom on mine, but used root to flash a mod that allows free wifi tethering and hot spot, and an extended power menu.
Flashing roms is also a big reason most people root phones. You can pick and choose what you want(touchwiz roms or aosp) and find one you like.
I wouldnt want an android phone without rooting it.

I mainly rooted for faux's kernel which removed the launcher lag and the messaging lag that occurs sometimes. I also rooted to removed all the bloatware.

Biggest reasons to root, for me personally, are custom roms, custom kernels, debloating, backing up and restoring apps, theming, overclocking, and undervolting. These are just my reasons personally. There are literally hundreds of other things you can do as a root user that you couldnt do otherwise.
The worst case scenario of rooting being, if you really dont find the benefit for yourself personally, its pretty easy to revert back to stock unrooted. These samsung phones now are basically unbrickable and flashing is really easy, especially if youve went through jailbreaking an iphone... lol rooting a samsung device is way easier imo.

I root for the deep-level backup capabilities, custom kernels that improve speed and battery life, Pie Control (makes navigating & using a large phone much easier), custom ROMs, mods like Hot Spot and custom themes, and deeper level security apps (firewall, find your phone, etc).

Here are the main reasons while people usually root. In no particular order.
1. Ad blocking
2. Remove unwanted apps "bloatware"
3. Custom ROMs/ advanced custom theming
4. Custom kernels and features such as nandroid backups and under/over clocking etc.
5. Tethering/free hot spot
6. Aosp ROMs
Ultimately think of rooting as taking complete control of your device. You can do pretty much anything depending on your knowledge after you are rooted.

I was thinking the same thing..lol

How much space are you guys saving when you root and get rid of all the bloatware? How much available space is on your phone before all of your additional aps?

There is at least one downside to rooting. You can't take the updates w/o breaking root. I've not rooted my S4 yet, but am thinking about it. I always rooted my HTC phones and it would sometimes take several months for a developer to incorporate updates into a ROM. So that makes me a little gunshy with a new phone like this, as I assume there will be a few updates in the first few months. But it seems like the dev's are much more active and on top of it with the Samsung phones, so I'm tempted to go.
Main reasons I want to go are deep backup, ad blocking and being able to tweak my settings to make it so the home button does not wake up the phone. I know, the latter reason seems silly, but it's a big deal to me.
BTW, you do not need to root to be able to tether. Check out the PDANet+ app. That's what I'm using and it works great wired or via bluetooth.

You should be able to take otas if you have stock recovery and are just rooted, this is how it was on the S3 at least and I don't see why you can't. Also on the S3 we always got the leaks right before the otas came out so the ROMs would always have the newest builds out before the otas usually, depending on the developer, some didn't like using leaks. But Sextape would always have a leak right before the otas dropped and we had everything usually within a day or two up to a week. But the development there was amazing on the S3. :thumbup:

You can take the OTA, it will just break root. There were several threads here stating that fact here when the MDL OTA came out for the S4.

Exactly what I was going to say! Sextape always came thru on the e4gt as well. The next update would always be out before the official release. So glad to see him have stuff for the s4 as well.

This is generally the case with OTA's, but every year it seems like rooting becomes more straight forwsrd, especially for Samsung. As for MDL it was a specific attribute added by Samsung to tighten up control on deeper root access that broke root, but it was hardly a locked bootloader or anything that severe. Re-rooting was as simple as loading a kernel and then Odining. At this point, most manufacturers are beginning to understand the benefits of the development community. Now if we can just get the carriers to "get it."

New to XDA, ETA on custom Roms for MF3?

I understand it will be out when its out, but I just migrated from iOS and I would always see postings from certain sites on when the next Jailbreak is coming. I am getting used to Android and I was wondering if anyone has heard anything and if not is this the best place to follow to find out?

If you are on the AT&T S4 that has been updated to MF3 we will have to wait until a bootloader exploit is found. There is NO ETA for this and it may take a while... maybe never. Just keep an eye on one of our many bootloader threads and pledge to pay the dev if you want to help motivate.
If you are on a custom rom and waiting for more keep an eye on the development section

I think the problem is that I purchased my GS4 and it came with MF3 pre-installed. Right now they have MDL Roms with MF3 features in it. Last I checked there was no way to flash custom Roms onto a phone that has MF3 on it!

You are correct, there is currently not a way to flash custom roms.

Thanks for that information. That is a bummer to hear the realistic possibility that it may never come. I guess I would be extremely bummed as rooting is the main reason I came to Android and bought the S4. I was naive in the sense I thought all S4 were the same. Little did I know there was so many variations. I even came to the forums before I bought it but everything seemed like a foreign language coming from iOS.
Any idea who I might be able to talk to to Pledge some cash to see that it gets worked on?
And also is there any way to see a MOD about this captcha restriction lol!

You can always just buy the tmobile version, they don't have a locked bootloader so you can flash away. Just a thought

Thanks for all that info. I am an idiot honestly that's all that can be said. I should have done a little more research before I made a purchase. I traded my iPhone 5 with a little cash on top for a brand new Galaxy S4 on AT&T (My carrier) had I known all of this before I would have searched Craigslist for a T-Mobile version and then sim unlocked it for AT&T...
Guess I learned my lesson, I really wish I could afford to go buy a T-Mobile S4 too but they sell for like $500-$600 out of contract.... Just can't do it and I am stuck with AT&T right now. Meanwhile my buddy who told me I should buy an S4 is laughing his rooted and recovered ass off right now lol...

You can install a lot of mods which will archive a lot of the same things as a custom rom. You can remove bloat, theme, add things... it is pretty awesome. See the development sections and the themes and app sections to see all the awesome stuff. Some people always stay with stock and just add mods

...you can also do some serious damage, and without recovery, you can easily "Brick" your device... Please be careful what you remove/change/mod, as if you bootloop or fubar your current OS, you will NOT be able to Odin Back to stock to recover just yet...
removing some of the Samsung Apps will break things when they are removed, and TiBU can't always put them back... for now I just froze all the bloatware, and won't remove anything until there is a way to go "Back to Stock"

Those are very good points! No nandroids either. It's best not to mess with a lot of those areas unless you know what your doing.

Yeah, thanks for clarifying, I should also let the OP know I have the S4 Active which has the ability to ODIN back to stock if something goes wrong. I do not know if you will have that pleasure so think twice and read before trying anything

I have decided I probably won't take advantage of the root until I can safely make a recovery. I actually posted a $25.00 pledge (I know it isn't much) towards finding a fix for newer users of the S4. People who have to warranty their phones will likely have the update installed.

This would be on hold for awhile until another bootloader fix surfaces, then you will see a whole bunch of MF3 custom roms.

That's probably a good choice and you can enjoy the S4 i337 without doing anything, it is a great phone.
Of course, rooting -basic rooting using the new technique for the MF3 rom-- seems to work well enough for many so far. So please don't view it as jumping off a cliff and hoping to find a vine on the way down or something so bleak.
For your model, which does not currently have as many recovery options as the earlier MDL versions, it certainly pays to be careful and also to understand your options for return or exchange if you do muck up the phone. The trick is to understand the specific risks up front. In this case, what can go wrong in the rooting process and how often does it seem to occur.
Read the XDA thread on this new rooting exploit for MF3 and see exactly what others did to get root without ruining their phone -and do only and exactly the steps that have worked for others. The rooting process takes only a couple of minutes --but so does bricking your phone when it rooting is done incorrectly.
The differences between success and failure are:
1. How much you understand of the procedure?
2. How much you have prepared in advance for what you are doing and trying to accomplish? and
3. How carefully and patiently are you doing each and every step of the process?
I've rooted several phones and tablets and been fortunate to get it right most of the time, or to be able to recover when I did not get it right. Unfortunately, in your case it appears that you need to get it right the first time for rooting, and many many folks have. So while this is very different from the iPhone "click on this site and you're jailbroken" approach, it is not low-percentage surgery either :good::good::fingers-crossed: So, I'd recommend that you continue to read up on that new root technique for MF3:
-- read to see how it is being accepted, what kind of feedback folks have and also
-- how safe/or comfortable folks seem to be in using it. and
-- what problems have come from trying it -bricks? soft bricks? recoverable or not?
I've read the original post (OP) on the exploit, but not all the information is in the one thread.. I am sure there are several threads that echo this development. . . Might have even more information too. After, that you will know if you want to try the rooting step. Or not.

- While root does not sound as valuable as being able to switch roms and use full customizations, it does provide quite a bit. For example: you can add (root-requiring) apps like "Titanium Backup" (which not only backsup all of your programs and data, but also can "freeze" programs that are useless and running in the background when you don't want them to do so!) Or Greenify, which has the same functionality for dealing with unwanted apps (better actually!) and apps like Cerberus to help you keep track of your phone or find it if lost.
- Rooting to add these types of add ons, without fiddling with some of the more invasive mods that others have already warned about in the other posts, may be acceptable middle ground for you -it does provide customizations for your phone without stretching the safe use limits very far.
Take your time. . . keep reading and move at your own pace. Unfortunately, in your case it appears that you need to get it right the first time for rooting, and many many folks have. So while this is very different from the iPhone "click on this site and you're jailbroken" approach, it is not low-percentage surgery either :good::good::fingers-crossed: So, I'd recommend that you continue to read up on that new root technique for MF3:
-- read to see how it is being accepted, what kind of feedback folks have and also
-- how safe/or comfortable folks seem to be in using it. and
-- what problems have come from trying it -bricks? soft bricks? recoverable or not?
I've read the original post (OP) on the exploit, but not all the information is in the one thread.. I am sure there are several threads that echo this development. . . Might have even more information too. After, that you will know if you want to try the rooting step. Or not.

- While root does not sound as valuable as being able to switch roms and use full customizations, it does provide quite a bit. For example: you can add (root-requiring) apps like "Titanium Backup" (which not only backsup all of your programs and data, but also can "freeze" programs that are useless and running in the background when you don't want them to do so!) Or Greenify, which has the same functionality for dealing with unwanted apps (better actually!) and apps like Cerberus to help you keep track of your phone or find it if lost.
- Rooting to add these types of add ons, without fiddling with some of the more invasive mods that others have already warned about in the other posts, may be acceptable middle ground for you -it does provide customizations for your phone without stretching the safe use limits very far.
Take your time. . . keep reading and move at your own pace. Well my Galaxy S4 on MF3 I actually bought on craigslist so the only exchange options are through the manufacturer. What I ended up doing was going to AT&T and using my upgrade to buy another S4 I just told the sales Representative to look on the side of the box for MDL software version or I was not going to upgrade. Heck bought my kid a galaxy player 5.0 instead of an iPod.
I just have a few questions pertaining to this phone.
I'm familiar with how it runs its size and power drain
I would be getting it with at&t
But I am a bit lost on the boot loader issues
Am I to understand that if I have the most updated
Firmware with the newest boot loader that I can't flash ROMs?
Or is this Knox switch just a warranty voiding device?
I have been voiding warranties for years now, this doesn't bother me.
I would probably prefer not to use safe strap, as it would eat storage space. I would prefer twrp or cwm.
If I just choose to root is there anything hindering this?
Does root update the Knox counter?
My understanding is it would since it is an Odin flash.

Honestly, unless you know up front what firmware the phone is pre-loaded with, (I.E you know for certain it's running <XXUD) or unless you intend to run a purely stock phone, you probably want to steer clear of the I95x series of phones in light of Samsung's recent nonsense.
Yes, there's a fair chance some clever dev(s) might find a work around for these 'issues'. But it might take a while. I'd be really surprised if it happens this year, and it will be dependent on how much info gets leaked out of Samsung/and over what timeframe.
At the moment there's not really complete info out there, and that's why everyone's still pretty much scratching their heads trying to figure out how it all works.

I understand the waiting with your fingers crossed process. Did that with the kindle fire HD.
My biggest issue would be the need for root to tether.
Anyway thanks I'll revisit this when/if we get this phone.

XDA has become useless because without root.

Without root it beats the purpose of checking in every day. I used to check XDA multiple times a day. Now I check it every other day and there's always nothing interesting. If we had ROOT man it'll be different. Miss downloading flashing roms. Waiting for new updates with new features. I miss ROMS but without an unlocked bootloader this phone is F'ed. Locked down till lord knows when. Seriously thinking about buying another galaxy. I sold my note 4. Should of kept it lol

I feel your frustration, but have to say one thing here. I've been using Android since the G1, I've rooted every device I've owned (too numerous to list) until now. The GS7E is really quite amazing, even without root. I had planned on leaving it stock as long as I could tolerate it anyways, so I was not entirely crushed to learn it was locked down so tightly. I mean, had root been a requirement for me, I'd have gone with a Nexus - where bootloader unlock is a right, not a gift.
I do miss proper hosts based ad blocking, but Samsung/Android Pay make up for the shortcomings of root-free ad blocking. The ability to change dpi without root (although it breaks Android Pay, but a quick reboot sets that right) and the AOSP like appearance of the Good lock screen helps me not miss Xposed. And the fact that things simply work, without the additional burden of wondering if it was something I flashed causing weirdness on my device, means I can spend more time playing with my phone... and less time backing up, flashing, restoring, adb'ing, fastbooting, installing/updating drivers, and debugging.
Would I have it the other way around? Certainly, but either way is a compromise, and there is no going back. So, perhaps it's good (for me) that we don't have root. Or, I might already be missing Samsung/Android Pay, and the stability of the stock rom.

That's cool bro, but like you I like the s7 edge. But being XDA I miss coming here to look for roms and being exited about getting an update. Yea I can customize it how I want it. Yes there no YouTube adds with RED. but being XDA that's just what I miss lol. Should probably just delete the app. Not like I'm going anywhere with this phone. Still believe rooting isn't a necessity with the galaxy s7 edge. I can't use Samsung pay so I could care less .

I could not disagree more. Mods are even more important in device forums where there is no active development, as the entire device forum becomes a pissing contest where everyone who doesn't have anything to contribute just argue with each other - making it even harder to find what useful information there is.
I appreciate the work mods do here due to the fact that the mods here are volunteers who don't get paid (with anything but insults from people like you apparently).
So if you are mad at the mods for removing something you posted, perhaps you should read the forum rules to understand why your post was removed. That and take it to PM, instead of *crapping on all mods in a public post.

I upgraded to this from a note 3 and I'm devastated to learn the bootloader is locked. I'm tempted to return the device or sell it after its payed off. We should make a group that shows interest in not locking the bootloader of the Note 6 do when it's released at least there was a movement.

After using this device for a month or so I really don't care about root. Yes I would like adaway and Viper but all in all I would make the same choice all over again.

It is not that small bigger than the s7 that I had. The oled and amoled is great but it feels more fluid on the HTC with this LCD. Rooted and custom ROM, that beats the s7 and edge any day of the week. Battery is going great now. I am at 51 percent with 3 hours sot unplugged since 8 this morning and now it is almost 8.
