The 'Android OS' battery drain seems to be the Achilles Heel of the Zenfone 2. I really like the device, the camera is even pretty decent when using 'Open Camera', but the battery life is definitely poor.
Are we holding out for 5.1 to fix this? CM? Any thoughts? I've tried a few things and not had much success sadly.
P
Yep, the Android OS battery drain is pretty terrible. I don't have any hopes of ASUS fixing it. Good thing is that CM for this phone is getting more and more stable with every release.
using root apps you can reduce the drain, and have almost zero drain for 5 to 6hrs..
and yes my hope is asus 5.1 or 5.1.1 should fix it.. i didn't have when i bought the phone in pre order but suddenly it came
I see it bad in the zenfone 2 but even on the Oneplus One its there on 5.0.2, so hoping 5.1.1 will fix it. Currently running cm11s on multirom as its that annoying, kitkat was great for minimal idle battery drain.
That is one thing due to which I've been holding off purchasing this phone. Will buy it only if either 5.1 update fixes the battery or CM rom is stable enough to be daily driver. Until then I'll wait-n-watch.
Best battery life I have ever had in a phone, after root and greenify. With the built in 2.0, its just about perfect!. Better than my G2.

The WW firmware has the drain issue I barely made 3 hours on screen time so I installed the CN firmware and the Google apps later, now I make 5 hours on screen time and about 4 if I heavy game.
My zenfone was the CN SKU with the WW firmware I don't know if that makes any difference, the point is that with the CN firmware there of no drain issue

Hi came to Z2 from Moto G. Z2 has much better battery life than the Moto G. Not great, but better.

I have the 4gb /64gb zenfone 2, CN SKU with the latest CN firmware.
I had the drain issue with the WW one, after installing the CN firmware I have installed only Google maps, play store, chrome and contracts sync I don't use anything else from Google.
I had trouble to revert from WW to CN but I managed it and got 2 more hours ost.
So my guess is that the WW firmware has something that the CN does not and kills the battery
I get 4,5 to 5 hours ost with optimal battery mode and no greenify out any other app everything stock, maybe I could get some more time with a battery management but I don't care since I make 2 days with moderate use 2 hours ost per day.
If you already have PowerNap, that's half the battle. There are instructions on setting up Amplify and Greenify on that thread, but here's another one that's specific to our phone:

Battery drain
I have to honestly say I'm not running into any major battery drain, regular daily use, I'll end up with probably around 40-50% left at night which is a lot IMO. I'm coming from a Galaxy S5 and I'm getting about the same amount of use out of it, if not better on my ZF2. Understand that the ZF2 is a more powerful unit then the S5 and with a bigger screen, so with those variations, it's actually doing well. I'm not rooted and I run a lot of apps/games on mine but I don't play games much, the odd time.
True, the Android OS drain is the only problem I have and that's the reason why I've gone back using my xiaomi redmi note 4g which can consistently give me 6 hours sot per day.
The zf2 only gives me about 3-4 hours sot with my normal usage, even though I've minimized syncing and other stuffs without rooting.
Meanwhile, I'll just wait for a couple weeks and hopefully Asus will have 5.1 for us to solve the Android OS issue. Otherwise, will be selling it off which I'm quite reluctant to right now...

Okay, can you detail out your setup... As in steps taken for reverting from ww to cn and from where did you get the gapps from?
I did it the same way as mentioned on the main thread to change from CN to WW but on reverse, I used CN boot, drodiboot and recovery with CN firmware.
I installed the gaps via the Google app installer is a simple app that you install as a regular app and from there you can install any Google app you want, I haven't used zip gaps for years.
If you can't find the files pm me your email to send then to you because I had some trouble finding them.
I often say to make a guide about it to help people improve their battery life but im to busy or bored to do it

Hmm... This makes me think that the kernel for the cn and ww are different as well... Coz even with the rom being replaced by the cm 12.1 or any other version made any such impact to the battery life in its own self... @TheSSJ can you kindly check as you've seen enough into this than any other dev so far...

THANK [email protected]#@#@!!!!!
very nice
Record until now SOT 4H23
From 100% to 10%
About 25 minutes of Gaming and in that 15min of Asphalt 8 (Asphalt 8 is taking enormous amount of battery)
1h15 MP3 playing on bluetooth.
Then use browser and chatting, installing apps thought playstore.
Stock Rom.
It seems i cannot post links so i have to found a workaround
4GB/32GB storage model here, all stock, no root or anything, best SOT time i got is 4hrs 26mins. Sometimes if i use 3g/4g data i cant even reach 3hrs.
Great phone but this battery drain is way too massive. Pretty much putting a dent in what is a great phone experiance value/performance wise.

I managed to get 5 hours and 18 min sot with the phone lasting about 14.5 hours before hitting %5 battery. The screen had used %9 battery according to my battery stats, and android had used nearly %50.
CM 12.1 and DeathlyKernal
Yankactive governor/sioplus io scheduler
Max CPU freq 2333/min 500
I played some fallout shelter for maybe 30 min, and other than that, I just read stuff and looked at funny pictures at work. That little time I charged was me transferring some stuff from my PC to my phone.
5 hours and 18 minutes isn't too bad, although this sot seems to be an outlier for me, I usually get about 3-4 hours sot if I don't use my screen as much. It seems that the battery drains fast no matter what I do on it, whether it be using it or not. So if I use it as much as possible right after charging it, I get the best sot. I can't really get my phone to last longer than about 18-20 hours even if the screen doesn't come on.
I plan on experimenting with different ROMs and kernals to find the best battery life. The battery is definitely my biggest issue with this phone.
Wow, I'll do it too soon xD
The problem is pretty clear. It's the Android OS. This is a typical Lollipop issue which isn't fully solved on 5.1.
There are some posts on XDA which might help. Specially one restricting the Google Services via Privacy Gurad or XPrivacy. Can't test it for myself because still waiting for my ZF2. Did someone tried this?
(I'm in hurry and will post the links later)
I can sometimes get around 6 hours SOT
Prism Barebone & Project T
Underclock to 333mhz-1250mhz
Yankactive and sioplus 512kb
Greenify almost all apps, leaving essentials
Power Nap too with quite a number of essential apps whitelisted
On Wi-Fi (I didn't try on mobile data)
I call myself I moderate heavy user ?

The only working solution for now: flash Lollipop. It's not perfect but it heats and drains battery much less than Marshmallow.
I'm creating this thread so that we can discuss battery life issues and look for a solution.
There is a popular thread on this topic but it is marked as solved, and while the original poster's issue has been solved there are many others that remain.
For some people the issue was solved when rootkernel was updated to fix some bug. But that was a long time ago, and some bugs are obviously present even in the latest kernels rooted with the latest rootkernel versions. It's still unclear if the issue is present on non-rooted kernels.
I will create a poll, please consider answering it to help clear the issue.
By the way, has anyone encountered any issues on 5.1, or is it just a Marshmallow issue?
Partial solution: I installed OM5Z kernel and it has significantly improved battery life on Marshmallow.
While it's still much worse than what you would expect from a Sony compact, it's not awful anymore. The phone can go a day (no heavy usage) without charging now.
Stock or Xpower 4 ,rooted or not dosnt metter - i have a drain every night(8-9 h of sleep) about 5-7% in airplane mode.Try BBS and WD now but seems phone sleep good.Think i lost about 15-20% at 24 hours
On Xpower 4 lite as is...with andro kernel v36 same issue. And i dont have any other soft. Goggle sync and other garbage is off.
Dont now where is may be problem.

Try Xpower3, it looks like X4 got more problem. I'm running v3.0 Full(stock kernel), when I set it to airplane mode over night only drain 1~2% everytime but I've installed greenify donated and used xposed amplify.
For anyone reading this thread, are there any other things people can note about their setup?
Country? Carrier?
If you are having issues, what apps do you use? Do you have a microSD card and if so, what brand/model?
If you are not having issues, same question about apps and microSD card.
I have seen on my phone the higher Android OS CPU usage which is of course the black hole of power drain for many people. I still need to do more scientific testing of usaging or avoiding apps to see if anything is triggering the drain.
T-Mobile US customer here, typically on Wifi at work/home also with T-Mobile cellspot for signal strengh. Standard apps for messaging and social media including Snapchat (bad app for power usage) but avoiding Facebook for now. Google Now Launcher.
Stock firmware, rooted stock kernel, don't have issues
1) Z5 was incredibly hot out of the box
2) Wiping the system, rooting the kernel etc. fixed this but gave me awful battery life
3) Installing the modded kernel then fixed the battery life (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/general/9-battery-drain-overnight-97-deep-sleep-t3382145)
I can stretch it to 3 days with light use, a day of heavy use can put me back 50-60%
I'm from the UK with the UK unbranded official ROM.

I found software RealBattery and CaliBattery.Try this too.
I have also recently upgraded from Z3C to Z5C with stock Singapore Customized FW, but I live in France (ordered from eBay).
Weird thing is that during the day it loses may be 30-40% in 6 hours, but every evening after I come back from work, phone overheats with battery up to 50 degrees and drains 30% in 1 hour...
In stats, it shows Android OS using most of battery and keep awake being 80% of up time...
I had same issue on Z3C with last 6.0.1 MM.
During the night I usually lose 5-10%.
Any advice?

The problem is that I have E5803, and not E5823...
Will the HK FW work on it? It's only for E5823 I think (according to Xperifirm)
Also, what exactly should I do - I should wipe everything when installing using Flashtool right?
Should I also do reset after installation?
Can I restore my backup or you would recommend to make a clean install of the apps as well?

Okay, now that I have gathered some statistics I take back my words about significantly improved battery life. It's slightly improved and still awful.
I'm using stock fw, but have deleted about 60-70 apps I don't have any use for. I also use OM5Z kernel. I experience no drain what I know of, usually have about 3 days with normal use.
The only issue I experienced is that the phone totally crashed a couple of times. I can't wake it up at all, and it doesn't take any charge (LED doesn't lid up). I have to use the reset button to reboot it. But so far, it's a small issue

I just wanted to put this out there. I have O beta installed with latest update, no root, bootloader locked, DNS66 app for adblocking and always on vpn, greenify (whatever it can do without root and jumping through adb hoops), stock launcher and I have never ever ever had such a great standby battery life. In EX kernel managers battery monitor, I see < 1 % per hour screen off battery drain consistently where I have not been able to go below 2.2% with any, (I say any and I have tried all) rom+kernel combination on 7.1.x.
This is GREAT!! I have never been happier with any stock rom ever.
EDIT: I would like to add that I have LG Urbane watch connected with phone all the time so bluetooth is on all the time but I bluetooth scanning is disabled (in location improvement, wifi scanning is still on). Battery optimizations for android wear is disabled.

That's interesting, cause my battery life and performance have both dropped significantly for me on O compared to Nougat

7h is unheard of. were you on battery saver mode the entire time?
I can get over 6h on a fully stock pixel, locked bootloader and all. I would say the majority of my time is on wifi. O beta seems to work well but my understanding from a community post by Google, don't have the link anymore, is you need beta Google play services installed as well to get O's battery benefits. I can't say that it makes more of a difference for me in comparison to avoiding notorious apps which hinder performance. I had similar battery life on N.

My battery life on O was horrendous. We're talking night and day. I run stock with not more than 20 or so apps. Something is really really wrong with O. I've gone back and forth on the beta twice with the same results.
I use the beta ROM about one week and it is very very good , also battery very good

I'm getting really nice batterylife with 8.0, which is awesome. It is now more in line with my average battery life with other devices like the HTC 10 and such. This however is fine to me as long as it's not dying by 1-2PM for me haha

If you can, please gives us a little bit more about your setup meaning if you have root, kernel managers, aggressive doze app (greenify, naptime, etc), limiting background services etc

I am completely stock, just updated today. I turned off background operation using the battery manager built in to Android to limit apps like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Chrooma Keyboard, etc.
For my usage my phone wouldn't last very long. I would probably hit 50% with an hour of screen on time. Now I'm at an hour and 54 minutes with 54% left. I've been off the charger since around 11AM, and it's currently 4PM so I'm definitely gonna have to see where it goes from here. When I leave work the real concern is heat when playing music or podcasts over Bluetooth, for whatever reason my phone was getting really hot when I used Bluetooth so I'll see how that is when I leave work today.

"DNS66 app for adblocking and always on vpn"....slightly confused by this..did you mean that you get privacy features like other VPN providers? AFAIK as I know DNS66 is only a local VPN and does not provide security/privacy features
With a combination of Amplify, Greenify, BootManager, PowerNap, LSpeed, and TinySU
I managed to Achieve this amazing battery life.
I will try to share my settings ASAP.
(Keep in mind I was on lowest brightness)
I'm on a US SM-G930T (SD820).
Usually when I leave my phone in my pocket battery goes down as if I'm using it, but it managed to pull through.

That's not good battery life at all, 14 hours TOTAL, not SoT
SoT was only 22% of that, so around 3 hours maybe
I think I have good battery life.
See pics.

I have an S7 Unlocked US model. There's no 'carrier' bloatware thank god. But I am pretty sure Samsung makes up for it by adding their own. Before I ran three debloat scripts on this thing, there were about 325 apps installed on it. I would HATE to see the additional amount of crap a carrier would add to that.
So after flashing the three scripts, I got down to about 150 (include my apps probably about 165). That's beyond absurd and this type of 'bloat' should be illegal. Samsung, among the other manufacturers and carriers, are literally scamming everyone out of hundreds, if not thousands of dollars by doing this. I have a Motorola Droid Razr M XT907 (Verizon) originally running KitKat. It's been rooted forever. I recently paid Sunshine to unlock the bootloader and I flashed Lineage 13 to it (Marshmallow). It's manufacturer date was 2014. Life span of 1 1/2 years max. I increased it by 5 more at least. If this thing can handle even Nougat (tried that too), then this S7 can run a nuclear generator, but won't because of the crap on it. Bottom line: If they ever say you need a new phone because it's slow, they're scamming you.
Here's my settlement after 24 hours of rooting, debloating, tweaking and optimizing my G930U
- Flashed fresh, stock firmware: Marshmallow 6.0.1, first release, G930UUEU4API3
- Was FINALLY able to gain and hold root by following the steps located in the first section of this thread.
- After that I installed an UPDATED version of FlashFire via ADB.
- I opened FlashFire. Until you disable KNOX, SuperSU will be VERY slow to prompt you with the pop-up to grant root access to FlashFire (maybe a minute or so). Once access is granted, you can debloat and disable KNOX. This is the only root required app I installed at this point.
- In section two of the same thread, I downloaded and added the second .zip file, S7_or_S7Edge_Fixes_Debloater_V15.zip to internal storage (sdcard) and flashed it using FlashFire. I also downloaded this .zip, added it to internal storage and flashed it. I also went here and did the same with this .zip. (KNOX is disabled in the first flash so at this point SuperSU will function normally).
- IF YOU DO NOT DISABLE KNOX COMPLETELY YOU WILL LOSE ROOT!! Flash ALL 3 .zips to ensure KNOX is disabled!!
- I then disabled any other apps and or services I deemed fit and that suit my needs. If anyone wants me to I can compile a list of what I left installed.
- Installed Xposed following the 3rd step in the thread I linked twice already.
- Downloaded and installed HEBF - Battery Saver & Optimizer, selected a medium profile for Battery and medium for performance.
The difference is almost instant. On top of all the bloat, I can't believe how much battery this drains because of it.
Also AppOps <3

Check the battery stats thread, 2 days with 3 hours SoT is easy, also depends what you were doing with your phone while the screen was on, if not much, like WhatsApp or something low powered, then you can get way more than that
atm Samsung have caused a battery drain bug with the last 2-3 updates, but before that I was averaging 5-6 hours SoT easily, and could easily get 2 days usage from one charge

With being on unlocked firmware, without the carrier bloat, There were 330+ samsung apps on this thing. I was lucky to get 5-6+ hours on a full charge and it would feel like it was going to melt while using it. I got it down to about 135-140 apps. if you include the ones I downloaded, 161 apps. Installed HEBF battery optimizer and it runs as smooth as possible. I probably could get as much of a charge out of it now. Prior to that? I don't see that being remotely possible. There were too many apps doing too many things at almost a constant level. So i find it very very hard to believe someone got 2 days on a full charge with 330+ apps running in the background. It just isn't possible.

Just because your phone was a lemon for battery life does not mean everyone elses is, go read the battery stats thread and see for yourself, most people get 5 hours+ SoT without resorting to debloating
5-6 hours on a full charge is diabolical, no-one in their right mind would accept that as normal, that's about the SoT you should be getting with the phone in constant use, not entire battery life
And next to none of those apps you removed use any power in the background, there were 2 that used about 10% too much battery for my liking, OM Customise and KNOX, I disabled them and easily got 5-6 hours SoT, at a push I could get more with lighter usage
So don't make statements like "It just isn't possible", you don't own everyone's phone, you can only speak from your own, it is entirely possible and is easily accomplished with a normal non-defective S7
Hi,
Phone is running stock firmware and not rooted.
Im thinking its the phone and not software related as issue seemed to being happening out of no where after the phone for the last 9 months had been superb for battery life considering usage it gets.
Originally thought it could have been an app update that caused it so uninstalled all previously installed and updated apps but same issue keeps happening with rapid battery drop off. Next course of action was to format phone and start from scratch with nothing installed and only my gmail account added. The same issue with battery rapidly dropping when not in airplane mode. Issue is shown in screen captures below with phone basically stock and no apps installed.
First 2 images show a day where I was working and had phone in and out of Airplane mode which shows the graduall drop off of power but then the drastic vertical drop was when I put phone back into service.

images 3+4 show battery life over 19hrs where phone had to be charged twice due to battery drain.
Can anyone shed some light on this? is my battery fried?
On another note should this need to be sent back under warranty it was originally bought direct from Amazon spain - would it be ZTE UK I contact and if so whats the best way to do this?
Thanks for looking....
It seems some of us has this issue. It might be software like the modem! Since it drains so fast from a weak signal. I really hope there's a fix. I hope oreo fixes this too

Although if you look at my first screen capture even at times when the phone has strong signal there is severe drop off of power. Has there be any mention of ZTE replacing batterys under warranty?
I was telling on XDA that b08 is worst ROM ever. More people have this issue, its software related. Not hardware of any kind. Cant recall what is the name of android battery saving function. Snooze or something. It doesn't work at all. I managed to improve battery life by uninstalling some apps that maybe drain battery. But my phone can't manage to stay alive for more then 8 hours moderate usage. Same thing goes for mic echo issue. That is not user fault. Same goes here with German b08 ROM. I personally thing that German group is more like copy paste type of developers then actual European support.
For me best ROM so far in terms of battery life was MM B06
Whats most irritating is that i am back with old type of resolving issue about this phone. Disabling 2/3 of processes. But in this case for battery sake not processor or ram issue
this is getting crazy theres like 3 threads now of battery drains

Don't even know what it is. I'm really guessing it is A2017U Bootstack B35. Any custom rom under any kernel yields the same horrible battery life. I'm afraid of flashing an older bootstack. Perhaps the safest one is LineageOS universal bootloader B15 and Modem
https://imgur.com/a/sH17g
That battery usage is NOT normal. I believe culprit is the modem. The battery seems to take a hit more when the signal changes rapidly. I had a strange anomaly yesterday when I had 69% battery for over 40 minutes. The signal was more or less much more stable than that in another area. Those screenshots were taken at work. I've never had that much drain prior to updating bootstack
Edit: this is that anomaly from yesterday https://imgur.com/a/VnDBS the signal was more or less more stable and the battery was really good. Like normal. And that was with music playing from Spotify via mobile data and Dolby atmos and viper4a while browsing Facebook and using messenger. So yes, I believe it could be the modem
@DrakenFX whats your opinion on this?
Why would every user not be experiencing the same battery issues?

I don't know where to look up my version, but I'm running on the latest resurrection remix and I'm also getting like 2 hours sot max... It'd be really nice if there was any way to know how we can circumvent this or maybe update to a newer version of the bootstack - I'm on an A2017G
I also made a thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/help/horrible-battery-life-t3712365

My question to everyone with this problem was if flashing a full stock image through MiFlash wouldn't solve it. I've had this problem; also random reboots which didn't get fixed even by updating from M to N, and MiFlash (or going LOS then back to stock) fixed it. I thought i had told you to use miflash, but it must have been someone else lol
What's the point in fragmenting the issue in like 3 different threads? Are the other ones dead?

Yeah, sorry, either you meant someone else or I missed you giving me that advice - anymay, I might try it this weekend.
So you're running on RR now again after going through this progress and you're getting a whopping 7 hours sot? When did you buy your Axon (or rather, how old is your battery)? 7 hours sounds like Utopia to me

Nope, not like that.
I bought my phone in February. I mostly used it with stock, but tried some custom ROMs although most were horrible to use back then. One day around May (i think) I had some trouble going back to stock, and I DFU-bricked my phone. So, 4th categ brick repair. After using MiFlash to install Marshmallow B10 I used it for a couple weeks (Xposed being one of the reasons), but battery life was around 3.5h SOT and I had random reboots, even without xposed... I updated to the latest N and it was exactly the same. Back to the drawing board then.
So I flashed RR, then a kernel, then added substratum + swift black to the mix, and I got 7h SOT.
Then I got bored of RR and returned to stock, and that's when I got the 3 hours of overall battery (not even SOT) so I used Nuclea for like a month. After that I went back to stock and had the usual 4-5h SOT.
You basically have to reinstall the system from the ground up and your battery life will get fixed eventually if it is a software problem. But better do it fast, because each charging cycle is bad for the battery

I don't know about the speakers but I believe they sound okay (way better than my friends' S7edge/S8/3T for sure xd). As of headphones you HAVE to flash the AK4490 patch or you'll be using the other DAC.
I recommend to use Viper4ARISE or the V4A magisk module from shadysquirrel. You'll learn to live without Atmos since the AK4490 will work on everything, so it compensates with soundstage.

I'd even say that standard mp3 sound is even better on custom (with poweramp or even youtube) than stock
