I have a rooted note 4(so i dont get OTA updates) and kies showed me a firmware update which was 1.8gb download and extracted to a 3.2 gb md5 file.
i upgraded my phone without modifying root.
My firmware is still at 5.0.1
nothing has changed except the sure thing:- root vanishing up and samsung blotware apps returning.
Don't understand what was the update.
Also, now with no root my OTA still doesnt work and shows an error message that i have modified firmware.
is that because of knox??

I had rooted my note 3 sm-n9005, and I cannot update via OTA. Hence I update to the latest firmware via kies 3.
After update via kies, the root is gone.
I thought now my phone was back to stock, I tried again update via OTA, it still failed. Said my phone is modified. I wonder, didn't I update back to stock firmware ? Why still saying it is modified?
I checked my current binary and system status in download mode, they are custom, why they are not stuck as I already update to the latest firmware?

i thought if i reflash to stock firmware i would be able to OTA
So now Odin will be my best friend while updating xD
Means once I rooted my phone (No matter I unroot it after that),I will never able to update via OTA right?
Hello.
I rooted my S5 when I first got it simply to use the volume boost mod. A week ago I decided to unroot so I can OTA update, ready for when major updates to the firmware on the phone are released. Anyway. An updated firmware became available so I tried to OTA update (not really expecting it to work) and got the "Modified firmware such and such" error come up. Obviously, rooting the S5 is different from the S3 due to the addition of Knox to the latest firmware, so I've got a few questions to ask.
Is there any way at the moment to reset Knox?
Does Knox stop you from being able to get OTA updates, even if you use TriangleAway to reset the flash counter?
Also. I checked today in Kies and it let me update my firmware but I didn't proceed with it because I'm worried about it bricking my device. I actually unrooted using SuperSU and checked the status of root afterwards using a Root Checker, which said I'm not rooted. Is it safe then to use Kies to install updates to the firmware instead of using OTA updates or will that brick my device?

- Triangle Away doesn`t work with the S5 and neither us it possible to reset the KNOX flag
- Unroot with the Towelroot or superSU app (wich ever you have installed)
- Flash a stock rom (firmware)
- Data factory reset in recovery after the flash
- Done and now you can update with Kies/OTA.
Just a quick question, if I root my Note 4, what exactly happens when an OTA update comes around?
If I keep the stock recovery, and just root with CF, is it still possible to install the updates, and then reroot?
Thanks!

Yes you can still have OTA updates even after root, but you have to either flash a stock ROM via odin from sammobile for your exact specific model (must match product code and CSC) OR connect to Kies and update from it, if there's no update available in Kies you can use the "firmware upgrade and initialization option", both options will get your "official" status back and you will get OTA updates again. After you install all the updates you can then re-root it.

Okay, so the answer is no to actually applying OTA updates while rooted? From what you're saying I'll have to revert to stock, install the update, and then re-root. Not the end of the world I guess.
Thanks

Yep you have to revert to stock like I did when I updated to the 17 Nov update. Kies updates work while you're rooted tho but they also remove root and you have to reroot afterwards. OTA updates will never work for any rooted samsung mobile.
Hi, do you lose your data by flashing the update via Odin or via Kies?
I mean, I'm rooted with all my apps, configurations and data, I can't get the OTA update since I'm rooted, if I update the software via Kies or Odin will I have all my data, configuration etc like the OTA update or have I to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure all?
Thanks!

Same question here. I'm no longer rooted (unrooted via the su app) but I still can't get OTA updates. Can I update using Kies while keeping my data? Will I then be able to use OTA in future?
You'll receive ota updates but you cannot install through phone once knox is triggered even if you flash stock rom.I haven't tried through kies though

So I need to use either odin, either kies, does it mean I lose all my personal data and have to reinstall everything??
Thanks.

Full unroot back to stock... install updates.... root again
and titanium is your friend
[NOTE: For this please flash stock recovery and continue with the following steps]
I'm having Samsung c9 pro (rooted) and nougat update was released for my device. I used xposed module FireFdsKit (mentioned below) to get update. To receive updates, open the module, go to security hacks and check the fake system status to official and go to system settings and check for software updates and it'll show updates (if any) and doing this helped me to get the official OTA update for Nougat . Download the update file (but don't install through
system update manager). After downloading the update, open flashfire app and it'll detect the OTA update press ok and flash the update with flashfire app (as flashing through this app you can have the root even after the update) and my mobile is updated and working fine now (on the latest update and still rooted ) you can use wanam module for KitKat, Lollipop Devices

As the Title states I have been trying to flash to Lollipop using the thread Update to lollipop and keep root using Flashfire app. I have downloaded and followed the procedure (yes I am rooted and confirmed with RootBasic) with it failing.
What happens is I load the files in order stated per the guide hit the lightning bolt, does the reboot and then gives error no command and then sits at stock flash update where you can either reboot, flash file or few other choices. I have tried numerous times with each time same result. What is going wrong? As I stated on am on MK2 firmware with ATT update frozen so not sure why this is. When put in download mode I confirm Knox 0 and Offical software with it having 0x30 for bootloader. Any suggestions or should I ODIN update but with what?

We just discovered this morning on the Vz S4 that FF does not function properly on their MK2(4.2) firmware which is likely also the issue here. You will first need to update to KitKat using the following file then root with towel root before updating to 5.0: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358548937
Before I proceed to KitKat with file linked to is there a guide to properly performing this and then rooting? I will update from MK2 to NB 1 then I need to root, then do the FlashFire and Lollipop undate. I see the guide to use ODIN but then I will have to root I also have not used towel root either so any guide would be awesome. This should not change KNOX either correct (although I guess it does not matter since I am long out of warranty)?
I want to have a clear understanding of procedure so I don't brick the phone! I have not used ODIN before since I haven't really done much rooting other than when I first got the replacement phone last year
I'd suggest [GUIDE]Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Installing Safestrap by guut13, and of course [How-To] Update to I337_OC3 - 5.0.1 and KeepRoot (4/7/2015) by muniz_ri for rooted Lollipop. Look in the I337 General forum for both.
Thanks Creepyncrawly and muniz_ri for both of your help it was easy to update from MK2 for this noob!
Ok I followed the guide and did update to stock nb1 and rooted, used towel root and then used flashfire to Lollipop and all seems to be working (I still am in process of setting phone up but it is running lollipop).
Since this is oc3 rooted is there anything else I have to do such as freeze att update? Anything else I should do right away?
Hi guys. My tab automatically downloaded Lollipop OTA firmware and It shows me constantly a message suggesting to update the firmware. I've 4.4.2 rooted device. Now I've disabled automatic OTA download, but how can I delete the downloaded firmware and stop this annoying message? thanks
PS the /cache folder is empty

Did you check /data/fota/ (or /cache/fota/ for that matter)? Also is that an AT&T model, because if it is I'd really appreciate a copy of the OTA file
