Hello,
So I've been keeping this to myself for awhile since I don't really use the camera on my phone that often, but it's starting to annoy the living hell out of me so here I am.
My i9301Is camera sucks. Specifically, the autofocus. It barely ever works. On the rare occasion that I want to take a photo, I am greeted by a a blurry viewfinder and I have to touch literally everywhere on the screen to find the green square, and even then I usually can't get the camera to focus on anything. This usually happens when the object is at a distance of 1 meter or further (macros are generally fine). Light conditions don't matter, it's always the same. Should I turn my phone in for repairs, or is every s3 neo like this?
Oh, it's the same on both stock and cm. Also tried several camera apps.
tl/dr: Focusing on the camera is iffy. Halp plz?
To clarify, I did drop my phone a few times so that might have something to do with it. Rest of the phone seems ok though.

I have already wiped the lens clean. There is a scratch on the glass, but it doesn't run across the lens hole so I doubt that's it. Oh well, I guess I'll take it to the shop. Thanks for the reply

I don't have this problem ,never. My autofocus works good. I got red square against direct sunlight .
Update: I noticed that this problem mostly occurs when I'm trying to take a photo of something that is on or near objects that have some fine detail on them, like the tiles and plants in these photos I took today. Objects on smooth surfaces usually turn out fine, but not always.

Hi,
I heard that there are some defect about I9100, do you all guys have these problems?
general:
1. auto-switch off suddenly when talking
camera:
2. the camera flash light doesn't work/make the phone re-boot when open the camera image stabilization function
3. pale red (or pink) specks appeared on the center of the photos
wifi:
4. wifi network suddenly cut-off
5. transfer the file to desk-top through wifi network, cell-phone reboot automatically
do you all guys got the problems above? So far, there is no these problems appear on my phone (touch wood..........)

No but seen 2 who have reported that five thousand did not report the problem .
wifi:
4. wifi network suddenly cut-off
Never ever
5. transfer the file to desk-top through wifi network, cell-phone reboot automatically
Nope

I have none of the above problems.
KE1 - Rooted
Everything you listed describes a faulty device, apart from the pale red spot in the middle of camera shots. Everyone phone has it. Nothing you can do about it unfortunately.
Like hearing it from a friend of a friend of a friend? Or better yet, "I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!" Awesome!
Experiencing NONE of the issues you posted.
(And, might want to lay off touching wood all the time, my momma told me that would make ya go blind. )

Take a shot of a white wall indoors with medium lighting and default settings (everything on auto) and with the flash off. I suspect most if not all GS2s have this issue, but it only becomes visible in certain situations.

Yes, there's a slight tinge of redness compared to SGS, I have both phones and side by side, it's pretty evident. However, it doesn't make the SGSII awful, and it might have to do with Gingerbread more than the hardware anyway. Overall, the contrast is much better on the SGSII, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the screen.
Only issue I have with mine is heat. If I browse too much (15 minutes max)
the top of the phone, especially screen, will get warm getting towards moderately hot to touch.

I agree. The pink patch on indoor photos seems to have improved on mine since I upgraded to VillainRom too - undoubtedly a result of KE2 which it's based upon. There is only a very slight red tinge now.

When I tried to charge my battery today it said after around three minutes that the chargeing is paused due to warm / cold device/battery.... WTF???! AND... I got slow connection sometimes and sometimes it will dissconnect and disappear...
OP - not sure where you got all but one of these "defects", noone else has reported anything like them. Battery life is bad atm which is an android problem, and also wifi is reportedly weak, other than that....

Wow, perfect post. Answered none of the points, and completely lacking in anything specific to help anyone to make an informed decision on keeping or choosing the phone. Sometimes something works and sometimes it completely stops...something.
I have ke2 unrooted firmware, and on the last few days, the vibrate on the phone has stopped working. Don't know if anyone else has had this problem, switched it on and off in the hope it was a temp fault, but no such luck at the moment.

Has anyone noticed this in their camera? You take a photo in low light and a line appears near the edges of your photo (only after you've shot it). I can consistently reproduce it. I'll get mine RMA'd, but was just wondering if it was just me or do other people have it? It doesn't show up at all in more well-lit conditions.
A couple more for Christmas
It seems like a software issue to me, making me think that maybe other people have the problem too. One of these shots shows lines on both ends
I just took a few quick photos with mine and I don't seem to be having that issue either. Have you tried restoring it first?
Weird, I get that too. Only in very dark conditions though. Not really bothered about it though tbh since low-light shooting is something I'm definitely avoiding with this camera.

Nothing seems to fix it. I've called for an RMA. It's worrisome that OverTheBelow has it too. I think everyone should check. The way I've been able to reproduce it is to have the camera take a picture of a dark area (not pitch black) and make sure either the top or bottom (whilst holding it in portrait) is completely dark. So the image you capture has to have something slightly illuminated in the middle, but the edges are black.
I just tried it on another Nexus 4 and got the same results unfortunately. Is this a common issue? Has anyone else experienced it?!!
Hi XDA,
I just bought my Xperia Z2 yesterday and i went to the batch numbers topic and checked for Issues reported by people there. Fortunatelly i dinot have any issues but today i noticed the front camera quality was very poor. There is a Yellowish reddish tint that appears on the front camera however the back cover is fine. The picture is like thousand of small dots flicker on the screen and if i keep it very close to my face then i can notice it. If I click the Picture the picture seems to be completely fine.
Can any one of you please check and let me know if you are also facing this kind of Issue?

Yes the finished picture is fine but while taking the picture it has a lot of noise. I have checked it with service center guys and they have called me tomorrow to update my firmware to see if issue is resolved otherwise they would replace the phone. However, talking to few people here in XDA it seems that noise issue is there with Sony camera and if the finished picture is fine it is not much of an Issue. So, I am thinking to get the software updated to latest build and then dont take replacement and keep using it.
What is the batch number of your phone ? Mine is 14w19

Of course it's an issue. It alters and creates an inaccurate preview. Why should it be flawed if the front is fine?

If you grab Front Camera Video it is also an issue because it uses the same Live-View as what you see on the screen.

Yes I agree. The video has hell lot of noise. But the picture comes out clear. I took the phone to service center and they reflashed the firmware and issue was still there. He told me he can replace the phone for me, but i refused as this is only the problem and i dont want to get a newphone which is of a different batch and has hell lot of other Issues.
Yeah, I've had this problem since I got the phone. I made a thread a couple weeks ago about it being an issue. I'm not updated to the current software, but I didn't think it would help, lol.
And it is very important to me as I'm a SnapChat whore in every meaning of the word, and, for some reason, the final image when taken in SnapChat is NOT made better as if it were taken with the Camera app.
I also have a 14w19, and I see what you mean. I don't mind so much as I don't use the front camera a whole lot (only with SnapChat, and the video quality isn't always the nest there anyway). I'm not bothered.
I'm bothered that for $700, the hardware and perhaps software in this case is so obviously flawed. I mean they really advertised the hell out of their camera prowess. But the front camera looks like the whole screen is dipped in sand.
It is clearly a software issue and I think it dosnt matter what batch you have, mine is 14W18 and in with really low light I have this issue but if there is some light left there is no problem at all and also the back camera did not have any kind of this issue in my case.
I'm sure that it's a software issue. Why else would the picture be correct after actually taking it with the built-in Camera app?

It's hard to tell what you mean exactly here. Are you saying the display on the screen has small dots on it or the picture it takes is not good.
is this something that comes across in a video chat or not as in the other person sees the same as well.
Can you post a screen shot so we understand better what you mean ?

Actually i wont be able to post a screenshot of it. I am talking about the front camera, when you start it the preview window that we see it is full of noise and it seems as if it has sand all over it. But the final picture is fine.

I have this too (and I suspect everyone does)
The front camera is quite simply not very good. The reason the captured image comes out slightly differently is most probably because it's a longer exposure (than realtime preview) and there's also some noise reduction in the post processing)
Hi everybody,
I've been using my Note 4 for a week. It's a great phone, great display, great performance and what I was convinced would be a great camera.
Before that I used a S3 (International version I9300) for two years and a S5 (International version G900F) for six months and nothing negative to say about them. They both gave great, clear, beautiful, sharp pictures, especially for a phone (I couldn't imagine it was possible before). I think it's important to say that so I can justify myself and show I'm not making up things...
I started to have doubts after a couple a days concerning the Note 4 camera. I found the pictures not sharp, especially in edges (kind of tilt-shift effect).
And then, yesterday, several XDA topics confirmed my concerns ...
So... To sum up :
Far pictures have blurry edges (I know lenses edges can be blurry, but in this case, when I mean blurry, I mean sometimes 1 third of the pictures... Close pictures and close-ups are great.
When taking pictures in landscape mode, focusing in the bottom third of the screen is just not possible, I can't see the focusing screen in this zone, as it did on the S3 or S5.
Locking focus has never been and is never possible (when trying to focus, I can see the focusing circle but I can't see or hear any green circle or sound confirmation (as it did on the S3 or S5, you can see my youtube video).
To make everything clear again, I (still) own a S3 and S5 with no camera problem, with a normal behaviour and we have two Note 4 at home with the exact same problems.
I have a master in digital photography and, being less picture enthusiastic and having not enough time, I replaced my equipment by these devices, and I was totally ok with that. (= I know I'm not making up things)
To illustrate what I'm saying (I know some of these pictures were made in a foggy weather but depth of field is clearly not "logical" here...).

I assume the problem here may be part software and part hardware (but again, two Note 4 with same problems ?).
Could a Samsung rep take this problem serioulsy and take it into account for a next update ? (except if it's a hardware problem )
Thanks a lot for your attention !
Chris.
I'm pretty sure your device is faulty. The blur in your images is not normal, I guess the lens is not mounted correctly. This may also be the reason for your focusing problems.
Have a look at the photo thread, you'll see plenty of images without blur.
I agree with you but what about the focusing problem on just a part of the screen ? (see the youtube video).
And the fact we have two note 4 with the same problems :/.

I experienced that focusing problem. Can't remember if STOCK straight out of the box did it, but I know when I used FireKat ROM it did it. I flashed the Camera Mod and it did it. But, now I'm using DynamicKat and it's fine. The far left edge of the camera picks up my touch and focuses.
Also for the Blurr thing. Is your Camera MODE in Selective Focus?

Are you also experiencing different focus zones in your pictures?
I'm really starting to think my camera is defective .
No. But did you make sure that you are not using Selective Focus Mode?
Yes, I did. All my tests and conclusions were based on my S3 and S5 experience
Well I read your post thoroughly and felt that you have written a reflection of what is going through my mind.
Exact same issues !! If you read my twitter feed ~ 10 days ago you will be happy to know that you are not alone.
I noticed the problem in the first 2 days of purchase and took it to a Samsung store few days later. They were very defensive initially but after 10 mins of technical conversation with a dude who did not know much about the difference between camera resolution and screen resolution I could show them the blur. Both on my phone and on a PC they had in store.
We did some like for like comparison with another note 4. Problem was evident.
They advice me to go back to service provider (Virgin Australia) and request a replacement under early life hardware failure.
I am now playing the to and fro game with my service provider who are throwing in all sort of hurdles. Hope I get a replacement !!!

I tried with s5 camera on sport mode and the same result the photo is still blur. .i beleve this is the software problem not the camera. .
Typical problem of the Note 4's software.
I also opened a thread for discussing the matter - but people just did not understand the problem.

I was thinking the same too.
I own N910C and i don't have this issue at all. I know there are two types of camera lens in the note 4 one is Sony and the other one is Samsung. Maybe you have one of the others ?!
Glad i found this thread.. I have the exact same issue with my note 4. You need to be knowledgeable with photography in order to articulate the issue and identify the problem.. Most posts keeps talking about the protective film.... Arghh
However the issue is not constantly there for me... It's almost as if the lens module is mounted loosely, and it can go out of alignment relative to the sensor, creating a tilt shift effect.
Sometimes it seems if i shake the phone, or tap a few times on the camera lens, the issue goes away...
Very frustrating. Did you ever resolve it?
Thought it might be the ois acting up... However i couldn't disable it for stills...
I have the auto focus issue as well. shaking the device or tapping the bottom a few (hard) times makes the cam focus properly. Problem is there all the time, although after focussing properly gone, then reappearing after camera app close..
I've also noticed this issue. I have more problems focusing on the left (Samsung logo) side of my camera sensor. If I flip the phone over, the same side of the device produces blurry details while the other captures it crisp.
http://imgur.com/kEnHKg2
http://imgur.com/dF9jHBD
Notice how the bag is clear in one, blurry in the other. The Samsung logo side of my device seems to always be blurry in photos of objects about a meter or more away. I have been unable to focus altogether on distant objects where the entire image is blurry.
I've had the same problem and I asked for a replacement. It's a defective unit, now my phone's camera works great.
I have a problem with the rear camera ,all the subjects are out of focus .
This seems to be a common problem and i've RESOLVED it in MY case.
FIrst, does the monochrome mode (camera) work OK? If so, then you *could* be in the same situation I was in.
So, first and most important, I have a gel cover on my case to absorb impacts or, at least stop the phone getting marked when dropped. I dropped my phone and it landed on one of the TOP corners. From this moment on, the COLOUR camera was out of focus. I asked around in the Mate 9 forum and it seems others have had this problem and one person there said he fixed it by tapping his phone. With this in mind i actually i banged mine on the other end ..... and focus was INSTANTLY much better, although not perfect. I then banged it again and focus is back to perfect!
In my case, it looks like my initial drop dislodged a lense/cover over the colour camera sensor and a "reverse" knock has vibrated it back in to place.
Again, check if this is just the colour sensor with the monochrome remaining perfect and, if you do try this, make sure you have something soft like a towel on the surface you're hitting to ensure your phone doesn't get marked.
Good luck!
