Currently Android support is not available for Nexus 5 or other ported devices, there is however work being done to make that happen and there is a separate thread about current development status.

Why are so many apps incompatible?

I'm writing an article on the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean, and I wonder if someone with more coding knowledge could help me out with something.
I'm wondering why so many apps are listed as "incompatible" with the Nexus 7. Is it the device configuration, or something to do with the way the apps are coded? Why would an app like NBA JAM work on a Galaxy Nexus but not a Nexus 7?
I think it's the default screen DPI value screwing things up.

That would cause apps to be listed as "incompatible" in the Play Store?
How can developers make apps more widely compatible? Shouldn't the Android SDK responsive design features take care of that?
Thanks!
A lot of the applications that are listed as incompatible are in fact compatible if side loaded onto the device, bypassing the Play Store.
I don't want to assume you are new to Android but usually within 2-4 weeks of a new Android OS launch, more applications will become compatible in the Play Store.

I've been a Nexus user for a few years now, so I know that eventually apps will be updated, although it's always pretty annoying in the beginning. I'm just trying to understand better what developers have to do in order to make apps compatible with new devices and new versions of Android.
Many also show incompatible (such as Amazon) because they require a rear camera. They work fine when sideloaded (as mentioned above) but force close when trying to access the camera.
There's a build property for "highest version of android that this app will work for". Google advises against using it in the documentation, but a lot of devs set the max version to ICS anyway. Expect it to be corrected as more people get JB

Canonical releases Ubuntu Phone OS

Canonical just announced their mobile OS called Ubuntu Mobile
Now, you're probably wondering why I put this in the GNex general.
Let me tell you.
The dev phone at this phase for UM is the one and only, Galaxy Nexus.
As seen here: http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/02/ubuntu-for-smartphones/
And in pretty much every picture of it on http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/phone
I made this thread for discussion, speculation and the likes
So, how long do you think until the first build is avalable for us?
UPDATE: Everything we know so far (basic information and release times) are here:

For people wondering about install (tried with TWRP):
1. Nandroid backup
2. Factory Reset
3. Grab quantal-preinstalled-armel+maguro.zip (MD5: e4c9c5601019ec7ce24f43f317361982) and quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (MD5: edd3c43909a6e73ac254b2673d40cc53) from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/quantal/mwc-demo/
4. Flash quantal-preinstalled-armel+maguro.zip
5. Flash quantal-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (this one will take a while, grab some coffee :laugh
6. Reboot (screen will go black but after a few seconds Ubuntu is up)
7. Profit :highfive:
This install didn't wiped my sdcard. I just restored my TWRP backup after a short Ubuntu testdrive.
If you are paranoid, just copy your stuf from SDCARD to your PC before flashing.

How to go back to Android?
It's easy.
You can either restore the Nandroid backup you made earlier (assuming you followed the instructions all the way) or just flash a ROM. It's as easy as that.
Can't friggin wait!

I don't care as long as it's soon! Both Ubuntu for android and Ubuntu phone OS look awesome. They teased this over a year ago though... So I'm not crossing any fingers.

This actually looks better than android to me! CANT WAIT
As already teased and promised, today Canonical is taking the wraps off the mobile version of Ubuntu, which is built around the existing Android kernel and drivers, but doesn't use a Java Virtual Machine and promises to use "the full power of the phone." Supporting both ARM and x86 processors, the Ubuntu phone OS will be compatible enough to let Android phone makers run it on their devices with minimal adaptation.

Actually, what they teased (if I remember correctly) is an Android phone, which when docked, puts Ubuntu on an external display.
This is similar, but instead of Android, you have Ubuntu Mobile

The "next couple of weeks" according to their press release. This is really sick- instead of running ubuntu on top of android it takes android out of the equation altogether. Plus it runs with current existing Android kernels and drivers. I'm super stoked- Can't wait to get my hands on it either!

Do you work for canonical?
Glad to see the market moving towards unifying our devices. My only hesitancy is that I use Google Voice for SMS and calls, though no VOIP. I'd need support for that and I'd have to see if Ubuntu One can rival Google Music (or if Google Music will find its way over). Since Voice and Music have both found their way over to iOS in various forms, I'm hopeful and excited. Ubuntu already has good integration with most Google services and it's all Linux so I'm optimistic for support.
That looks so beautiful! I'm not very knowledgeable with this project so I have a question, will it be able to possibly run android applications native or is going to be huge different overhaul of an OS.
edit: NVM, it would appear as if not after reading through their site a bit... But do feel free to tell me.

Yea unfortunately you will not be able to run android apps, it will have it's own specific market place. They have already put up some tips on developing for mobile so Im sure some people have already gotten a head start on it :fingers-crossed: using html 5 or native apps..
Really can not wait for this, I keep checking the website and thread for updates..would be awesome to see a release this week as a surprise. :good:
I would love to try this when it is available.. totally awesome

Jolla Sailfish Q&A!

Ask any questions about Jolla Sailfish here! Please don't ask twice and Quote the question you are answering.

Will this OS be able to run android apps ?
if it can thn this surely can be a great alternative to android n IOS .
the UI seems awesome
Love for Meego thn died n surely its gonna carry on with 'Sailfish"
Really looking forward to this project I have the following questions:
1) Any chance for double tap to wake screen like in meego?
2) Will there be a status bar on top/bottom of the screen or is that against the sailfish design prinsiples?
3) When running android apps, do the android buttons get displayed on the screen like on some devices without physical hw buttons or will you be able to use the back-key etc from the phone?
i am really looking forward to this!!
love the intuitive and fluid interface of iOS, and love the highly customized Android. It would be great if Sailfish brings the advantages of this two..
Keep us updated, okay
1. Can we see some demo of the OS running more than 4 apps? In particular, I am curious of how it looks like.
2. How the OS will look like in landscape mode?
3. Can we see some demo of a notifications center?
This is it for now, thank you!

My question is who are you to make [OFFICIAL] threads on XDA? I don't even make official threads. That's for moderators and admins.
It seems that you don't contribute anything to these forums except OFFICIAL tags.

1 - yes, you can see that on the demonstration by Jolla CEO at Slush 2012 on YouTube "SLUSH 2012: Jolla presents Sailfish OS and UI" at 28 Min 20 seconds
2 - There aren't status bar, apps running fullscreen.
3 - At this time, no demonstration about Android apps on Sailfish, can't tell you.

1 - At this time, Sailfish can display 9 apps running in multitask, but Jolla working for more. Thinking how to integrate it.
2 - No landscape mode for the moment... Not planned.
3 - hmm, no demonstration for the moment.

Please stop asking for ports to device a and b. Please!
Here are the facts:
At the moment there is only a X86 image from the SDK. So some people startet to port this very limited image to X86 devices like the ExoPC and Acer W500 Tablets. Any other port especially for any mobile phone with an ARM processor (that's nearly every phone out there) is not going to be published. Never! And if you ask for X86 phones like the Lenovo K900. No it won't work!
There is only one device other than the Jolla phone that can run SailfishOS today. It's the Nokia N950. When the Jolla device gets released to the markets, Jolla will probably provide a beta image for N950 owners and maybe somebody will port that to the Nokia N9. But that's all.
There will be no ports before that day. Even if you get Mer 100% working on your device you still need the Jolla Silica UI that will be released with the Jolla device.
Really I don't want to read any other posting asking for a SailfishOS port on your damn device.. It's not gonna happen!

Does themer app support nexus6p?

Hey guys, I am an iphone user looking to buy a new android phone and the nexus 6p is my current choice. However, i would really like to know if the themer app is supported on the nexus 6p( on their website it is stated that they do not support the nexus 6 which got me worrying). Can anyone confirm with me whether the app is supported on the 6p??
I used to be a huge supporter and user of Themer but earlier this year when the developers all but abandoned the app and their forms here on the website I gave it up.
From what I've seen they have never even officially supported the Nexus 6, so waiting for it to get supported for the Nexus 6 P may take longer than you're willing to wait.
I guess they have picked development backup of the app but don't answer any questions and I have heard that they aren't adding any new themes to the theme store but that you can go by designed ones elsewhere.
I am currently using Hola Launcher. Pretty nice, simple, lightweight.
Now, if you're really interested in trying it out on your Nexus 6 P it may actually work. It worked perfectly fine on the g3 before they made it "compatible". All you have to do is find an apk download of it and side load it on your device.
Nexus 6p has layers a different for of themes strait if off the box ....root and get layers manager from app store ... Get some layers and find which one you like

First of all thank you so much for your reply. I noticed you said to download apk and then sideload. Does that mean the app is no longer available on the playstore???

Android Go on Nexus 6?

Android Go can work on a very basic setup as Google says. So, if someone can make it work on our Nexus 6... We can extend our Nexus' life for a few more years. I dont know if Android Go is 64 bit only... But if a 32 bit version is available, then can someone port it for the Shamu? Just an idea!

I guess he's talking about Android Go
Yeah, I think he meant about Android Go Oreo 8.1 release for lower end devices and I think our nexus is a lower end. Oreo is running great on our device without any lag and we will also be getting 8.1 in few days. I'm more Happy and satisfied with oreo than nougat on my nexus. Anywaz lets see if we can port Android Go. Need to look into the sources.
Cheers!
Android go is designed for phones with between 0.5 and 1 GB ram. I don't think it will be a good fit for the N6.

Yeah but I guess since our device hardware is getting old and many of the app updates hogging more and more resources, I guess Android Go is what our device needs.

I don't know. I have a Nexus 6 and I cannot say I have had any problem with app updates hogging more resources. Perhaps you just need to wipe your phone and start fresh.
@runekock has the right answer here. Android Go is for devices in developing countries with limited RAM and expensive data usage. According to the article I read on the portal the example was a city where its phone owners keep their phones on airplane mode all the time unless needed. Android Go resolves both problems by breaking Google Play Services into different modules and by looking for WiFi whenever possible.
The N6, while it could run Android Go, I believe would be severely hampered in its performance. Plus, there's no need as Android 8 runs fine on it.
