Android Go can work on a very basic setup as Google says. So, if someone can make it work on our Nexus 6... We can extend our Nexus' life for a few more years. I dont know if Android Go is 64 bit only... But if a 32 bit version is available, then can someone port it for the Shamu? Just an idea!

I guess he's talking about Android Go
Yeah, I think he meant about Android Go Oreo 8.1 release for lower end devices and I think our nexus is a lower end. Oreo is running great on our device without any lag and we will also be getting 8.1 in few days. I'm more Happy and satisfied with oreo than nougat on my nexus. Anywaz lets see if we can port Android Go. Need to look into the sources.
Cheers!
Android go is designed for phones with between 0.5 and 1 GB ram. I don't think it will be a good fit for the N6.

Yeah but I guess since our device hardware is getting old and many of the app updates hogging more and more resources, I guess Android Go is what our device needs.

I don't know. I have a Nexus 6 and I cannot say I have had any problem with app updates hogging more resources. Perhaps you just need to wipe your phone and start fresh.
@runekock has the right answer here. Android Go is for devices in developing countries with limited RAM and expensive data usage. According to the article I read on the portal the example was a city where its phone owners keep their phones on airplane mode all the time unless needed. Android Go resolves both problems by breaking Google Play Services into different modules and by looking for WiFi whenever possible.
The N6, while it could run Android Go, I believe would be severely hampered in its performance. Plus, there's no need as Android 8 runs fine on it.

The app titled: "Scriptures (beta)" shows up in my G1's market, but does not in my Nexus' market.
Any ideas what's going on?
Did you do any of the following to your Nexus One:
1. Unlocked bootloader?
2. Enable root?
If so, "Scriptures (Beta)" is a *protected* Android application and will not show up.
If not, then it's a OS "support" version issue.
Cheers,

My new N1 is not unlocked/rooted, but my old G1 *is*. But it's the G1 that sees the app fine, and the new N1 does not.
Must be an OS support issue.
I downloaded the app directly from the author's website and it works fine.

Yup. If that's the case, the author needs to fix it and update it on Android Market.
It's annoying for us developers and the damn manifest and API target/limits when "new" stuff comes out... *Sigh*

application compatibility
Your phone is listed as a 2.1 device in the market, and if the apps don't specify compatibility (they introduced a compatibility layer in 2.0.1) then they won't show up since they won't work anyway (well, they might, but the general assumption is that they won't)
I guess that explains why AppManager Pro isn't showing up for me on my N1. Annoying. I love that app.
This explains why, when people were talking about Nexus One Torch and I decided to see what it was, my G1 couldn't see it. Now I have a Nexus I can (and it's good )
There are some errors I think, because I want Bonsai Blast which I think I remember was demo'd by the Bonsai Blast google developer for either droid or 2.1. I think it was a demo for the new resolution, so I know it can't be that, and I don't think a google Dev would forget to update his extremely popular app.
Let the application owners know!
When the moto droid came out, I emailed a few developers and some even came out with an update the very next day!

If we take the conservative assumption that it must be listed on the Google's own market place before it would work on Nexus, how many applications are available at the moment? Is there good statistics on that yet?
Perhaps most of them would work on Nexus one anyway? Love to hear from people who have tried using the applications written for the older OS version and see if they are generally still compatible. It's hard to imagine how a version upgrade would upset the older applications too much.

Really the only set-back is the resolution. All of the hardware has exponentially increased. All of Androids apps are written in java, which is pretty standard and should have no problem running on all android platforms.
The only time it should be disallowed would be if a game were to be written for the N1 specs (which cannot run on the G1), and therefore not shown in the market for the G1.
I suppose developers don't want their games to look too pixelated on the N1 until they update the resolutions. It's a waiting game now, since there are absolutely NO games available unless you want to play solitaire.
Or you could email the devs to death requesting an update...

I think a bigger issue would be the lack of Google docs support, and the lack of uploading larger videos over 3G instead of WiFi only.

Multiple calendar sync is broken.
Contact data entry is extremely limited compared to the web ui.
I do like that I've made the switch to Android from winmo, but am missing a lot of features that I used to have. I was basically free to do anything, but feel so limited now to what Google is giving us. Hopefully this is resolved soon and we are able to get full functionality from our nexus one devices.

Android has been through 6 MAJOR versions ... if they can't fix the basics, maybe they shouldn't be competing in the space.
Or maybe Google should stop that dumbass policy of only releasing BETA software. Others seem to be able to release software that works fine, admittedly with less features. Get the basics right and then add features one by one and make sure they all work before releasing them.

Hi, it's nice to see you're willing to make the switch.
Honestly, there are some things from Android that you're going to miss here, but there's also a bunch of new exciting stuff on WP, so in the end it all depends on your ability to adopt something new and different.
Although I don't use an Android phone as a daily device (because that place is taken by my Lumia 820), I have one for various mods and stuff, and I just find WP a better option for me (but obviously both have their advantages and disadvantages). The difference in performance and optimization is most visible on low-end hardware - WP excels there, Android not so much. There's also a difference in terms of features and customizability - all those nifty things you could change/modify/replace in Android are mostly not in WP. The hardware of WP mostly caught up to Android, so there shouldn't be any deal breakers there. The store is growing daily and now includes most "major" apps, but it really depends on you whether you'll be able to find your apps or not.
But before you decide and make opinions about WP, I urge you to wait for the 8.1 update - it brings a lot of new stuff and further refines the user experience, so it'd be wise to make judgment based on that. If you can, I suggest you get a cheap WP to have the first taste of the platform, and then decide if you want to upgrade or go back to Android.
In any case, make a decision based on your own opinion and experiences, it'll surely be the right decision for you.
I switched from my Nexus 4 to my Lumia 520 a few months ago.. one thing I noticed is the speed difference. Even though the 520 only has 512 mb of RAM, it feels more fluid than my Nexus 4.
I actually just made the switch.
From a Nexus 4 to a Lumia 925
Its been about a week, so far not regretting it at all. I managed to find all but i think 3 apps or so that i used on android in the WP store. One thing you will notice, some apps dont have all the functionality as they do on android.
What i do notice about WP is that everything is much more fluid. Tasks are easier and quicker to do. Also, in a lot of cases some of the apps on WP are generally nicer than you'll find elsewhere. I am really glad i made the switch. My main reason for switching was because i was just bored with my Nexus, wanted something different.
The only thing that its really missing at the moment is a google music app, i noticed like the day i got my WP, google changed the api or something in google music with borked all the gmusic apps on the windows store. But in everyday use, i dont miss it much. I just use pandora.
Give it a try, people hate on the apps and selection (i did too at one point) but WP has a great selection and some of the apps are absolutely beautiful.
Many people have a go at WP without ever trying it so well done to the OP for this thread.
I have had 10 Android phones and 4 tablets in the past 4 or so years. I think Android is a fantastic OS, easily the most powerful, feature rich and customisable available. In January I was contemplating swapping my N4 for a N5. However looking around at the fact that Android is so popular now I thought about trying WP8. So I got a brand new Ativ S for £140. The plan was to run two phones for a bit. The thing was I never looked at my N4. I know the lack some Google services is a problem but I have music, email & calendar one way or another so I can still interact with my Android family members.
The biggest let down in WP8 is the browser. IE is …. erm not very good. It needs text reflow (but so does Chrome) as a start but in reality MS need to open the platform to allow other browsers to run their own engines.
My advice is to see how tied in you are to Google and Android apps and see if any are missing on WP8. If the missing ones are vital to you then maybe WP8 isn’t for you.
I am now waiting for the new set hardware coming later in the year. I will then decide whether to get a new WP device or go back to android.

Luckily, IE is getting several improvements in 8.1, so it'll be a more viable option for people. The thing that's missing the most IMO is password management. Every decent browser should have it...

Yeah, if you're heavily tied into Google's ecosystem, you may need to reconsider your choice. Not that support for Google's products and services totally sucks, but it's quite lacking compared to what it could be (mostly Google's fault). But the good thing is, if you manage to make the switch to Microsoft's services, they've got you covered.
Me too.. my final android phone was the Xperia z (for a few days).. i just got bored of Android, wanted something different... i may get the LG G Pro 2 when it comes to the Market as a second phone, but my Nokia 1520 is not going anywhere in the near Future.

Depends on how you define "free". There's free and trial versions of apps available on WP as well. There's only one store for WP, but you don't really need 10 app stores just to get your apps, do you? But if you're talking about piracy, you're out of luck.

As I said, no, and doesn't really need one because quality apps are found in the store. The only other source of apps are homemade apps, but you need dev unlock for that.

I know this doesn't apply to all of us but as someone who is a heavy android game player waiting on my Nexus 6 has got my worried that about half my games that i have invested hours and hours and hours into will not be playable on this device.
Now sure some over time will be updated to work again. But plenty of poor devs (like EA) can't be counted on to update games that are a few years old. And it's my belief Google should make every new android update somehow programed with a way to make older apps work. Granted i know we are moving to art. But certainly there could have been a creative programming solution.
I think how great a game like Dead Space would look on a Nexus 6 and unfortunately i will never probably see it.
What makes you think that any of your games will have issues with the nexus 6?
Couldn't tell you which game but a buddy of mine can't play one on his, nexus 7 2nd gen updated to lollipop, anymore.
But no I don't think google should make everything backwards compatible. At a certain point that's going to hinder progress when you can't change certain things because (this is overboard but) apps meant for 1.5 wouldn't work anymore.

It is not the responsibility of the developer of the OS to ensure third party games work with their updated API's, that is solely on the app/game developers. If they don't want to put the work in, then you are just out of luck unless someone programs some kind of emulator. It is what is required on desktop OS's for compatibility, I see no reason to change that for the mobile world.
Retaining legacy support for extended periods just leads to junk like Windows XP continuing to be used despite Microsoft dropping support.
It is inevitable and necessary for backward compatibility to break at some point of time otherwise all phones would still be running on android doughnut.
I understand it should be the developer that fixes it. But being most are not going to care (Ea/Gameloft) if it's a slightly older tile. It would be nice if Google had a plan b for us.
Take ms Windows. All the newer ones 7/8 have a way to run software in an older compatability mode.
Bottom line v is some companies have 40-50-60+ apps in their android library and growing. We are going to expect them to update all of them every year Google makes changes??? Or are we just going to slowly keep losing everything over time?
Your gripe is with the app developers not google. Also you say every year when google updates. That's not accurate. This is the first time in a long time that google has implemented something that would break app compatibility.

Further, if you don't mind a history lesson, supporting ancients OSes long past their prime is what nearly killed Apple. Their OS X was such a smash hit in large part technically because they finally severed software support for years and years of previous OSes. People squawked initially and being cut off, but then didn't mind the dividends in performance.

Probably for the support of external memory being used as internal.
I can't wait for marshmallow too! I've been searching for ways to move apps 100% to the microSD card but so far nothing works!
I've tried all the apps 2 sd apps on Google Play and I even tried this:

Based on what? That's like saying, "If you go outside, you're just going to die".
Some people just "talk" to hear themselves "talk".
There might be bugs/issues when it comes out, but overall newer versions tend to bring new features. More importantly, security patches are usually in newer versions too.
Sorry but he has a point. Still today I don't understand the need for new OS versions every 6 months. New OS will bring new features but also new bugs to be corrected. It's not like google makes HW specific OS. For example Minix already said they won't upgrade their Android base because they have a very stable, bug free SW and do not want to risk having to solve lots of bugs. Then again no one forces you to update, simply don't click the button
Nevertheless he has some point and they should focus on contacting app developers to support the Android TV a bit more because the amount of supported apps is just ridiculous in my opinion, specially considering the tremendous potential of Shield's HW.

Nope. They will release it when it's ready. It makes no sense to rush a ROM deployment if it doesn't bring anything new over the past release and if it's not as stable. If they would do such a thing, the discussion over this board will turn into "Why doesn't nVidia care about their users and release crappy updates!!??!! Let's boycott [email protected]"!"!"
