So no more remote feature? - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I upgraded my Tab 4 8.0 Wifi to lollipop and it seems Samsung has discontinued watchon which lets me use the built in IR sensor to control my tv . They said to use peelsmart remote instead but peelsmart remote says it doesn't work with my tablet. Does anyone know of a remote app that will work with this tablet or is this a discontinued feature for this tablet now.

And what would that be exactly? Watchon still worked on kitkat even after it was discontinued but now on lollipop it doesn't work. What alternative app?

Since Upgrading to Lollipop on my T330NU, I could not find any app to get my IR Blaster to work. I contacted Samsung and they told me the IR Blaster feature is no longer supported.. I decided to downgrade to Android 4.4.2 until someone can port an app that will work. The Watchon App can not connect to server, and the Peel App will force close..

The apps arnt the problem its the new update. It no longer has the files for the ir support.
i re added the files to my tab and the apps dont close but without a modified kernel that has ir enabled its a no go.

Yeah this is a major problem. Unified remote and other apps don't recognise the IR blaster because there are no drivers or whatever. How hard is this to patch in to a kernel such as the one that has been rooted?

Z,
have you used a "generic" non -peel ir app, especially now that we're rooted?
i'm downloading the oldest firmware that TIAPUNC has up for the sm-t330nu as i have a suspicion about the radio image.
i am probabliy wrong, but, ir service is owned by

init.rc:409: chown system radio /sys/class/sec/sec_ir/ir_send_result

Z,
hey hey, okay we're on the same page then. i'm running some tests kernel wise, i actually flashed the kk modem.bin and apnhlos.bin images to no effect.
i'm also doing ramdisk comparison but i don't see anything yet.
Tracing the full path of everything remocon connected in the kernel source will take a bit.
@sub77, do you have irblaster working in any of your sm-t53x builds? if so which ones?
m

hey,
okay, ir blaster is up,
i am waiting on thread maintanance to set things back in order.
the package will contain the necessary files for ir blaster operation and also revert to default/stock dpi.
it'll take me the day to get the install [updater scripting] correct to account for sepolicy contexts.
when the thread is cleaned i will reopen and post update.
Now the testing i did was on an emerson flatscreen with PowerIR Universal Remote Control

MK808b / Netflix / corrupt video

Any idea if there is anything I can do about this?
I could describe the problem, but the pictures attached do a better job!!
NB: The Last picture shows the on-screen controls are not corrupted, just the video.
BTW... Netflix support were hopeless..

I had the exact same issue and with trying multiple ROMS, the only one that worked was an old one. It is software-build related.
The build that worked for me was "update_mk808b_400j1401" I found via one of these links that the eBay seller sent me:
1) http://www.mk808.com/MK808/en/Download.html
2) http://blog.geekbuying.com/index.php/firmware-download/
I used flashing software found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2070390
It works great, but not their latest Android Build...
I did have issues trying to find Android Phone software working with this device build, but LANmote is a pretty good solution, and the only one I could get to work. I tried like 4 paid versions of apps for this stick, and this is the only one I got to work... Most services(/servers on the machine?) didn't want to start and/or function with this build.
I was thinking about buying another ROKU, but for 1/2 the price and a full-featured Android PC for half the price of a ROKU, I knew what the better choice was!
("Android phone" remote control "android touchpad" tablet control "use android phone for HTPC stick control" MK808B)
Is this build I referenced working for you?
I got sick of the antiquated interface, and tried a build for 1080p...
Works GREAT, until I was streaming Netflix for a while and the screen just went black.
Maybe I will try a finless ROM.
Hi,
I tried finless 1.7, and it works great! An older version of JB, but that's fine, I can live with that!
Thanks for the help.

I have 2 on the way, should arrive by May 2, and I will let you know how those $4.99 10/100 dongles work...
Some guy in the UK bought them for his, and this looks like the same ones, but I will verify before dropping a link to the adapter, as this is public.
I got the 10/100 dongle and it worked OOTB, after enabling in settings, no config, just plugged it in enabled Ethernet, and it pulled HDCP from Cat5.
Here is a link if anyone wants a wired connection: http://www.ebay.com/itm/350766060467
$4.99
I did have some lag in streaming, but this even happens on Netflix via my Roku sometimes, even with my 50Mbps/25Mbps pipe.
BTW I have been running "Stock plus goodies" from here on XDA, and it has been pretty stable...
a solution

Hi,
I have same problem with netflix. I bought this device only for netflix and youtube (because Samsung Smart TV is a sucks). My device is a android 4.2. I did read here and on others sites about this problema and the solution is install android 4.1. With your links a found this instructions on this link:
http://blog.geekbuying.com/index.ph...pc-new-factory-firmware-release/#.Ua4K5EBwrqU
I downloaded the files "update_mk808b_400j1401", drivers and flashing software.
I can't perform these instructions because my PC doesn't recognize the device. I have a Windows 7 x64. I plug my device into my PC and nothing happens. On some posts I did read that is necessary to use Windows XP. Oh god, I don't believe this!
I need a help to solve this problem. Can you post to me a way to install this 4.1 rom on my device, step by step, the way you solved on your device?
I tryed to install a oldest versions of netflix, but the problem did not solved. I like very much that device with a 4.2, I would like to keep this version. Is there a fix of Android 4.2 of MK808B to solve this problem? Do you know?
Thanks!

Hi nonpaq!!! Thank you very much!!! Your apk solved my problem and I didn't need to change the Android :good:. I will use a lot to say if this apk is stable, I will post here if it is ok. This netflix apk version is the prove that the problem is on the netflix app and not the Android. I will send an email to Netflix about this problem, let me see what they will answer...
Thanks everybody!

It's a somewhat complex process, but there are step by step instructions in the readme file included with the finless ROMs. I found that getting the drivers installed was the hardest part. I also found that using the reset switch was easier if I opened the case.

Voice controlled TV Remote?

I've done a good amount of searching but can't seem to find a app that I could control my TV through voice. Has any one else found/looked for this feature. I tried Utter! But couldn't get deep enough into the remote app I'm using to run a macro. I also sorta tried Tasker but i m still learning it. If it can be done with tasker then the Utter plugin should work. I just upgraded to s4 from s3 yesterday and I've tried since then to find this but I need a little help. Thanks.

Are you talking about using it from voice through the IR blaster? Are you on stock ROM?
I wouldn't think there's a way to do this from tasker via Utter, there's no profile setup I can think of that would make sense.

Back in the day I had an Archos 5 and I was able to say 6-2-0 and it would go to channel 620. That was Android 1.4 ish. I figured there would be something similiar but better nowadays. I was hoping with Utter that the custom commands would let me run one of the macros but it could only bring up the macro menu. There are quite a few remote apps to chose from but I didnt see any with custom voice commands but thats OK. With tasker I have no idea(yet) how I would go about doing that. Maybe activate a widget if thats possible. Just a thought without proper knowledge. I am on Stock-Alpha Rom. Thanks.

App to allow restart from launcher??

So now that 5.1 offers a restart function without physically unplugging, is there anyone up to the task of making an app that allows one to do this from the launcher screen? Don't know why Google decided to bury it.
I ask because every few days it drops my USB ethernet and the only way to get it back is to restart. My wife and daughter use it a lot so I'd like something a little more family friendly..
Thanks..

Updated SU binaries and reboot is now workingâ˜ș, however no go with power off.
It's actually a good thing that TV Boot's shut down function isn't enabled. If you use another reboot app like PhongIT's Quick Reboot to "shut down" the Nexus Player, it goes in to a completely unresponsive state until you power cycle it. You're better off letting the device go into its daydream and sleep modes on its own.
I'm still on 5.0 rooted and I'm doing this from my smartphone using Tasker and Auotoremote (lite): with a widget on my smartphone I call a Tasker task which send an autoremote message to my NP; here Tasker intercept the message and restart the NP; I also have a task for only power down the NP; I will also try managing volume in the same way, but I don't know if it will work ...
I made an open source app called reboot is here on xda can't link to it right now but if you look at the threads I've made you'll find it. It works so far so good. I'm thinking about combining that with the open source home launcher app. When I get some time.

Quick connect unable to find chromecast

I'm unable to find my Chromecast (2nd gen) using Quick Connect. Quick Connect does find several Sonos speakers and a neighbor's TV (which is not very helpful since I don't know the neighbor )... I've understood from several articles elsewhere on the net that Quick Connect on the S6 could connect to Chromecast. Is there some setting that I'm perhaps not seeing that I need to toggle (the S7 Edge is my first Samsung phone)? I've tried reconfiguring the Chromecast on my 2.4 and 5 ghz networks, with the phone connected to the appropriate network each time, to no avail. I'd rather be able to cast the screen quickly via Quick Connect than use the Chromecast app. Connections via the Chromecast app are also unreliable by the way.. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'm also having the same problem I used to do it easily with my S6 Edge but S7 Edge andust S7 not finding my Chromecast.
Why are you using Quick Connect for Chromecast? As long as I'm on the same Wi-Fi network I can send things to my Chromecast. It just works. No need to "connect" each time I want to use it.

Because casting via the Chromecast app requires extra clicks. Open Chromecast app, open hamburger menu, click Cast screen, click Connect to Chromecast. In principle, Quick Connect should allow me to swipe down, click Quick Connect, click my Chromecast. Anyway, it's supposed to work, so I'd like it to work

I have a Galaxy S6 and until yesterday it was running Android 5.1.1. Now it's running 6.0.1. Before the update Quick Connect worked with my Chromecast (2nd Generation) perfectly. Now it does not recognize it.
I assume your S7 is running 6.0.1 as well.
Was this by design? I hope not and that a patch will be created SOON!
I also hope that a patch can be written to fix this issue.
I'm used to being able to cast / stream to just about anything using my HTC phone.
I'm a first-time Samsung user and, although I love the S7 Edge, I find this a major frustration !
Fortunately, there is an easy enough alternative. ES File Explorer has a Chromecast add-on that you can choose to add the first time you attempt to cast. It works very well.

I haven't come across any information that states one way or the other. I know it's a Samsung feature, not Google (Android), but your guess is as good as mine at this point.
Under developer options in the settings menu (turn on by going to About Phone and tapping Build Number repeatedly) there is an option for Authorizing Wireless Display Devices, but I haven't had the opportunity to see what it actually does yet. By default it's turned off.

Its something that Samsung took out.
There were some apks (ChromecastFrameworkService.apk, RemotePlayer.apk, SecEmbeddedServerService.apk) that was responsible for this functionality that was removed in marshmallow.

I've tried to flash these APKs from the Lollipop ROM, but after that my S6 failed to boot. Didn't tried to debug to see whats going on (maybe installing manually instead of flashing resolve this, I don't know).
For those who wants to investigate, here (XtreStoLite Deodexed Aroma Add-on Package 2.4a) is a package that has these APKs. Maybe you guys are luckier than me.

Since I wouldn't know even the first thing about debugging, there's little chance of me figuring anything out except that it appears I won't be able to get this functionality back anytime soon
Hopefully there will be someone out there who wants to investigate (and find a solution)

How does one that is not technologically minded do this?
If anyone of you here still need some guidance on how to enable and use chromecast here it is.
Go to the playstore and download the chromecast app which can be found here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chromecast.app
You can add the chromecast app as a shortcut to your home screen or to the "App Edge" feature.
And or you can also download the Google Chrome browser at the playstore which can be found here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.chrome
When you see the chromecast icon on top of the chrome browser's title bar click it to start chromecasting.
Quick Connect has nothing to do with chromecast and will not connect to the chromecast dongle.
Good luck,
Have a great day!

Yes, I've understood that the problem is that Samsung has crippled this functionality in their 6.0.1 version of Touchwiz. I haven't found a way to get the functionality back despite posts in several different forums. The Google Cast app does allow you to connect to Chromecast, but the process is more cumbersome than casting via the quick settings menu. I hope someone finds a solution for this problem.

Linux on Dex
Development environment on the go
Samsung DeX lets you turn your phone into a PC-like experience with a single cable.
Productivity and entertainment were some of the many ways of using Samsung DeX. Now, with Linux on DeX a development environment is supported so you can also use your favorite development tools and packages on your mobile devices.
Here is how it works. You need to install the Linux on DeX app on your device, once the app is installed a secure container will be created and you can add an Ubuntu Linux image on container to run it.
Enjoy a PC-like development experience with your mobile devices and Samsung DeX. Turn any place into a workplace.
Now we just need dex.
And a spare monitor.
And a spare keyboard.
And a spare mouse.
Still can't justify this feature..
I singed up and it it sounds pretty dope. First thing I want to do is run emulators like citra, which aren't supported on android.

The note 9 doesn't need a physical dex dock, just a type c to hdmi cable. I have one plugged into my TV and a keyboard that connects to 4 devices over bluetooth. Phone screen acts as a mouse.
im really hoping i can get this to run on my s9 plus. They have released the img file already, i just need to get ahold of the apk for the dex/linux app.
I registered but the registration page talks about a free trial version of linux for dex, but what does that mean? that after will be paid?
The website won't allow me to sign up. It keeps saying that something went wrong. Anyone else have this issue?

Just tried it,to see if I could replicate your issue:
No problems here, got an immediate confirmation email, stating a link for the app will be sent soon (11/12/18 or thereabouts,I'm guessing, per the signup page).
If you're on mobile, perhaps try on desktop PC with any ad blockers & such turned off (Ghostery/AdBlockPlus/etc...).
Another thought came to mind, check to make sure when you enter your gmail address, leave off the @ gmail.com,as it's already there.

If your trying this on your phone make sure your on the desktop site. It's in the settings of your browser. That's the only way I was able to get it to work. I had the same problem you had until I switched that.
