Here we go again, bricked Nexus 7 from Asus - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dont know what happened. My Nexus 7 is fully charged, when I plug it into my computer and press the Nexux power button, my computer makes the sound of a USB device showing up. 5 seconds later makes a slightly different sound and tells me my device is not found. I can not see any screen activity at all. I have pressed every combination of buttons trying to get it to do anything. Nothing seems to have any effect.
Has anyone else bumped into this issue? Is there a fix. I dont care if the data on my Android is wiped out, would just like to get it working again. Is there a hardware, "Reset back to factory, ignore everything' type function? Very frustrating having only three non-working buttons.

[Q] Omnia 7 broken - will not boot

hi
my omina 7 of 1 month is broken.
A few weeks ago it wouldnt boot and gave the screen indicating
the phone needs to be plugged into the pc, it then booted ok.
Yesterday it gave the same message but by the time i got it home
the message was gone.
Now it will not boot, it simply cycles through the samsung logo, the three network logo , then back to the samsung logo.
Will be taking it back to the three shop tonight.
is there a way of hard resetting the phone using the buttons?
I have only found info on hard reset from within the OS, which obviously i now cannot get to.
has anyone else had this problem
The only similar problem i found was with a focus
was on the windowsphonesecrets website under the heading restoration error
to hard reset the focus press the power, volume & camera buttons all together. that might do it.
Have you tried taking the battery out of the phone? Heard from someone that that solved the problem...
yes tried taking the battery out
tried it without the sim
let the battery completely drain and tried again
the hard reset button combination didnt work either
just constantly cycling between the samsung and three network logos
three have now sent it off for repair ....
I have a very similar problem. My phone randomly rebooted itself but now it sticks on the Samsung Omnia 7 logo. I've tried removing the battery but nothing.
Is there a Safe Mode I can boot into?
Damn looks like I have the same problem. Was playing a game.Phone rebooted on its own, all I get is the Samsung Omnia 7 screen.
Tried a Hard Reset. I get the options pop up for about 2 seconds asking if I want to format. If I am quick enough to press the Home button nothing happens it just switches off.
Did you try to flash the ROM ?
Me?
No?
Download mode was the only mode that seemed to be recognised by my PC.If it wasn't in warranty I would maybe have tried that, but as it is in warranty I will let T-Mobile deal with it.
my repaired samsung was returned mid january
a few weeks later and the same thing has happened again...
phone froze, switched it off , now will not boot again
it is definitely the same hand set or at least the same outer casing
the bill said it had some parts replaced
I wonder what caused this issue?
I had similar problem and this is how I solved it:
Make sure your Device is switched off (remove and reinsert the battery)
1. Press and hold the Camera, Volume Down, and Power buttons simultaneously.
2. Release Power when the phone vibrates, but continue to hold down Camera and Volume Down.
3. Release Camera and Volume Down when the Format prompt is displayed on screen.
4. Press Windows key twice to confirm the hard reset.
Enjoy your phone now
add 1 to the list, mine is doing thin, formatting doesnt help, reflashing doesnt help.
unless i can find a fix, im without a phone for 15 days while tmob plays with it
any progress?
Since applying the update that Samsung release yesterday I'm having the same problem...
Format didn't work, installing 'older' firmwares (I8700BSEJK1, I8700XENJK1 and I8700DBTJK1) didn't solve any issue
Anybody with more ideas?
I've also had this issue... I think it was caused by forcing the nodo update. Now I've updated it normally using this guide
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...spx?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
I hope now the problem is solved.

Power button not working after upgrade to 9.2.1.17 / US

Yesterday I have updated my TF101/US to 9.2.1.17 (not rooted, serial B50) and now my power button does not work at all. I cannot either shut it off (I can hold it for minutes, nothing happens), nor can I wake it up (the only possibility is to plug in the power). Reset to factory setting does not help
I talked to Asus, they suggested to send it to RMA, but I want to try to discharge it completely and check whether it helps.
Will keep this post updated if I find out something more.
Update: battery discharge did not fix the issue. Going to send the device to RMA.
Thanks for this post, this if for no other reason is why I will be dealing with my random reboots (they only occur once a week or so, if that often, for me so not a big problem, not like a broken power button would be) rather than updating the patch. However, this belongs in general or Q&A not development
Also for me you have to call assistance for a RMA: i could understand that power button does not turn off screen, but i can't understand, a part an hardware problem, how it does not shut down keeping power button down or why it does not turn on.
Yes, that sounds like hardware issue, but that must be very weird coincidence.
The complete story is that I just received device from RMA yesterday (LCD backlights were broken). I turned it on, it happened to have ICS already (it was sent with Honeycomb) and I was able to install all my software. Then a message re. new OTA update poped up, I decided to upgrade, and right after that power button stopped to work.
Yes, that can be hardware issue as well, that is why it goes to RMA. If I were 100% sure that this is software issue, I would wait some days hoping that ASUS will release bugfix for it.
Hmmm..the device will not power on if it is shut down? (How would you know this unless you shut down, and then can't turn it back on I don't know).
I re-read this and it is unlikely IMO that a firmware update could break your hardware, but I guess if a computer virus can break nuclear centrifuges anything is possible? Could be a coincidence..I feel for you, I had an over-discharge issue one night and my TF didn't want to boot up, and then flashed the red battery on the screen, but for those first few seconds my heart wasn't beating..I get the same feeling when I get a bad flash too lol
Luckily, the device wakes up when you plug the charger in. So, currently my choice is either to keep it running (disable sleep) or to have a charger and plug the charger in when I need to wake it up.
The bad thing is that the RMA "cycle" takes about two weeks.
Maybe it isn't a coincidence..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546640
Mine started this about two weeks ago before I picked up the update today... I thought i was the only one until I saw this post
I have misunderstood something: post says WAKE ON not TURN ON, ok this could be software related, but long press power button should be FORCE A SHUT DOWN...
Click this link on how to remove the front bezel. Then you can check the inside power switch to see if it's working:
http://www.techrepublic.com/photos/cracking-open-the-asus-eee-pad-transformer-tf101/6270147
That's the way I fixed my TF101 after I dropped it and the power button got stuck in the chassis.
Also read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391254
I think this is a solution to your problem, if it's not software related, which I doubt.
I get the same problem all the time, I leave it sitting for a couple hours come back and it won't turn on or off...
I also sometimes get the non functioning power button. I cannot consistently replicate it.
Sometimes it happens after it sleeps for awhile.
Sometimes it turns on when I open the tablet up while connected to the dock.
I have to hold the power button until it reboots itself. This is annoying after while. And even getting more so.
I'm also having a power-on related issue since the ICS update but didn't want to start a whole new thread for it. Ever since the update my Transformer boots into CWM by default. If I power it down completely then press the power button the EEE Pad logo flashes on the screen, I hear an audible "click" (best way I can describe it) from the device and it boots into CWM. If I select "Reboot device now" from the CWM menu it boots right back into CWM.
The only way to boot properly now is to hold the volume down/power buttons until the menu comes up to choose between Android and recovery and choose Android. (It actually defaults to this so I can just let it sit 10 seconds or so)
Any ideas?

exactly same problem as me now. holding volume down and power is the only way to start it up if it has been left alone for awhile. since the update.

Apparently it's a pretty common issue with the new version of CWM, as explained in this here thread.
So far the only solutions I'm seeing involve ADB commands or flashing a custom ROM.
fixed for now....
I had the same issue the power button would only cold power off the device. The only way to power back on is by connecting the charger.
I solved it for no in the following way which i do no recommend to anyone. I have opened the device and disconnected the battery for 5minutes. After connecting it back the device powered on with the power button as it should.
In my opinion it looks as if there's some power related controller that was "hang" and ignored the power button .
Any ideas ? Asus ?

[Q] impossible to restart/boot Nexus 7

Hi there, have a specific problem, tried to google and search through the forum but no success.
I have stock ROM with 4.2.1 android, no root etc., I was browsing web via Firefox, opened 3 pages, battery cca 48% when suddenly everthing freezed, even home button and whole screen become unresponsive. I pressed the Power button for several seconds to turn it off and to restart it, however the screen is off all the time. I have tried to do hard reset, hold the power button for 30-180 seconds, hold all 3 hardware buttons for 30-180 seconds, hold just power and one volume button, connect to PC (always connects as Unknown device, not able to load any driver), tried all of this with and without power supply connected. After all this I am still not able to boot the device. Any idea?
Try unbricking Nexus 7 guide
Hi, you should always be able to get your Nexus 7 back to factory defaults by following one of the many "unbrick nexus 7" guides, like:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781250
Good luck !
unfortunately I am not able to flash it as my screen is still black, I do not see whether it is on or not, I am also not able to connect it to computer as it still pops up message that the device is unknow and I am not able to install any driver for it, nor automatically, nor google usb drivers... still getting unknown device message...
I'd just return it to Google and get a new one

Ouch ! That sounds like a broken device to me. I'd also RMA it.
Have you try plugging your tablet into your charger and check if your device is charging or not? (you'll see a battery status in the center of the screen) if so try to charge it for an hour or so and then after that try to press the ff.
while your tablet is off press and hold both vol. up and vol. down button then press and hold the power button. keep it press for at least 10 secs. and see if you can go/access your fastboot mode..
charged for more than 4 hours, tried that, did not helped, already sent for repair... hopefully will be changed for new one...
Just pry off the back and unplug the battery, ubereasy and will work fine again. Unless you got a lemon

[Q] Nexus stuck on 'X' screen, even after full wipe

So, a few days ago, I started having some problems with my stock Nexus 7 (not unlocked, no ROMs or anything like that). Some apps just wouldn't open, they would force close within a second of opening. Anyway, I think it might have stemmed from the game "Let's Golf 3", as problems started after playing that, and when going back in to it after a day of issues, a message appeared saying "Unfortunately, launcher has stopped" - it gave me the option to report or cancel, but whatever I pressed, the message popped back up. I pressed the sleep button, which seemed to turn my Nexus off somehow.
Then, when trying to to turn my Nexus back on, it just stays on the 'X' screen. I have done a factory wipe through the fastboot menu a few times, but it still stays stuck on the 'X' screen. To turn it off, I hold down the power button, but it just starts the process again automatically. The only way to actually turn the device off is through the fastboot menu.
I have seen talk of 'factory image' and drivers etc... but I am not too comfortable with that sort of thing. I know the basics of troubleshooting devices, but not much more. I am very wary of doing anything more than what the device provides me with.
Any idea how I can get my Nexus started, or am I going to have to look for a replacement?
If all else fails, then flash stock rom. If you're reluctant to do it the fastboot way, use toolkits. But it is very easy to flash a new stock rom. Go try it.

Is that not for rooted devices?
Flashing the factory image for my N7, how do I know which version my nexus is? i.e. 4.1.2 (JZO54K) or 4.2.1 (JOP40D)?

Use the one you like, just choose the right one for grouper -> nakasi (wifi only) or nakasig (with simcard)
4.2.1 is the latest Android version...

I too had the same problem. Tried everything. Finally gave it to ASUS service centre in Nehru Place. They will replace the mother board. May take 15 more days. So sad!
Okay, now the thing won't even turn on.
Holding the power button, and other combinations, nothing happens. No image comes up when charger is put in.
Feel like the thing is dead. Probably going to have to get it fixed or find a replacement. Don't want to spend too long without my Nexus

FYI,
The tablet can "play possum" when it is in APX mode. (Which is easily entered from a cold start condiition with Vol-Up+Power) By that, I mean the device is on, but absolutely nothing ever appears on the screen. The only way to detect this is to plug it into a computer and the unknown APX device (USB Hardware Id VID_0955&PID_7330 ) will show up.
The only way to exit that mode is to hold the power button down continuously for 15-18 seconds. IF that happens, pressing the Vol-Down button immediately after the Google logo appears will pop you into Fastboot mode.
But, given that you have prior experience with other odd happenings on the tablet, the above hypothesis is a long shot, I'm more inclined to say "It's dead, Jim".
If everything fails let it sit for 3 hours on the charger (as long as it is not overheating or something) and try a few more things one last time before you ship it out.

What is the best way to fix/replace it? I bought it from Argos - will they take it back (bought back in December)?

Call Asus first. Make sure to let them know it is less than 2 months old. If they want you to perform the return through the original retailer, they will tell you. But it's best to eliminate any other middlemen if that is possible, as I suppose that the tablet ultimately goes back to Asus anyway.
(Might be different through other channels, e.g. PlayStore - I dont know).

Shield won't start

Hello everyone!
I was using the Shield (pro model, 500gb) and suddenly it won't respond to the remote control. I turned the Shild off and then tried to turn it on, but it won't. When I try to turn it on the shield button turns green but only for 1 second and then turns off. Nothing is displayed on the TV. I have tried many times turning on the Shield and it only turns green the button for one second and then turns off.
I have tried the instructions provided here, but to no avail: http://support-shield.nvidia.com/android-tv-user-guide/index.htm#t=Reset_SHIELD.htm
Has anyone encontered this issue and resolved it? Don't know how to recover my device now
Thanks a lot for your help!
Best regards,
David.

Im not a expert in this sphere, but according your written the power button on Shield not lights and this happened without your interfering, my guessing and opinion sounds like you have hardware problem, this symptoms not sounds like software. Try this one and or not I would go sending back by warranty!

Hello again!
I tried what is mentioned on the video but it does not enter into bootloader. The video mentions to press the nvidia button two times and in the first time the green light keeps on. In my case, when I press the first time, even if I keep pressing, the green light just turns on for 1 second and goes off. The second time it is the same, and actually nothing happens
Anyone has encountered this issue?
thanks!
Did you manage to eventually get this sorted?
I have an almost identical problem; the remote for my SATV Pro stopped responding, mid-session, one day.
I had to pull the plug and it would no longer boot, thereafter.
The light will stay on indefinitely, it seems - I left it on overnight to test.
It won't enter the bootloader menu, either; if I hold the power button for 6 seconds, the light switches off and I can still hear the harddrive.
when trying the push button method do not forget, the USB and HDMI should be plugged to each device before start. me I just press for start then I instantly press again and hold, works well .
Did you figure out what happened and if there is a fix for this? My Nvidia Shield Pro is having the exact issue and unfortunately my unit is a month over the warranty period =(.
Same light flash for a second after power, but nothing after. I'm thinking it must be a hardware issue, but how to troubleshoot it? Wish an nVidia engineer would help out.
My 2015 Shield 16GB went dark today and I have the LED on for 6-10 seconds after replugging, and then it shuts itself off. I only see the green Shield logo for few seconds. Tried going into bootloader, but there it too shuts down after few seconds...
same her mine just gave up.
Was Shield Experience 8.2.1 recently released or am I just seeing it now for some reason? Maybe that's what caused your problems?
edit: seems like there are issues with the TV trying to go from 7 directly to 8.2.1. See the sticky:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforc...ield-experience-upgrade-821released-11162020/
after one night unplugged i got it booting again and it run for about 10 minutes or so.
efter that i have now tried toapply new cooling paste and even tried with another power adapter, but noting seems to help so far.
and as some one else up there said, i can still hear the hdd spin
A very similar thing has happened to me but maybe my difference can shed light on this issue?
I was cleaning (sweeping specifically) and accidentally turned the shield on. I pressed the touch button on the front of the shield to put it back to sleep and I then heard a *pop* sound. After that the shield will only turn on for a second, the green light will come on for a second and then it will switch off.
I opened it up (pretty easy with just my finger nails even) and I can hear sounds coming from the mainboard when I plug it in, like it's still receiving power even though it wont turn on.
I have little to no experience repairing electronics but my assumtion is I discharged enough static to blow the power button board on the front of shield unit.
Also to add, the shield unit will not respond to the inputs of a controller or a keyboard that has been paired with it.
I identified the infinitesimally thin wires that connect the touch power button to the main board but they dont seem to be damaged themselves - I plugged the power supply in while each side was disconnected and the shield unit turned on when I reconnected the wires.
I'm going to assume that if I can replace the power button board on the front of the unit it will work again but I'm not sure and cant be sure unless I can get a spare part.
Or maybe I should just take it to a repair shop?
Has anyone managed to get their unit working properly after this specific issue.
Side note: it's strange how many others have this exact same issue in this exact month isnt it?
Just following up a little bit.
I got a new power supply from Ebay to see if that would make a difference.
It did not - the power supply is not the issue.
Oh just to add - I tried cloning the original drive but I was still able to read it on my computer and the drive-clone didn't change the outcome so that wasnt the issue either.

I turned mine off at the device last night and, pop, a huge static discharge from my finger. My Shield now exhibits the same behavior as everyone else in this thread.
Just wondering if you or anyone else every figured out a fix? Possibly blow fuse or capacitor in the power circuitry?
No change in status.
I'd like to still fix mine but I ended up buying a mini PC, which is a million times better than a proprietary-hardware device.
It's not locked down like an android only device (even though it runs on win10) and I can do much more with it than just watch movies and play android games/apps.
Anyway if anyone else can find a solution to this that'd be great.

Nvidia Shield TV Pro 16GB 4K HDR
All right guys, I'm back with the following steps
If you own a SHIELD Controller
• Unplug SHIELD TV.
• Connect SHIELD controller to SHIELD TV with a USB cable (use port closest to HDMI).
• While holding the A and B buttons at the same time, connect power to SHIELD TV.
If you do not own a SHIELD controller
• Unplug SHIELD TV.
• Connect a USB keyboard directly to SHIELD TV (use port closest to HDMI)
• While holding the "A" and "B" keys down at the same time, connect power to SHIELD TV.
• Once you enter Fast Boot mode, on the keyboard use the "X" and "Y" keys to navigate the menu and "A" to select
Use the X and Y buttons on the controller to move to "Boot recovery kernel".
3. Press the A button to select "Boot Recovery Kernel".
4. You may see the dead Android robot on screen. This is expected behavior. If so, press B button on the controller.
5. You will see Android Recovery Menu.
6. Use the X and Y buttons on the controller to move to "wipe data/factory reset".
7. Press the A button to select "wipe data/factory reset".
8. After process select "reboot system now".
8. SHIELD will boot to home screen.
Do the factory reset
It will bring you back to recovery
Select "Continue"
device will process and reboot like new
Hope this works....ENJOY
It did for me
