[Q] Broken Screen - Need Help Turning On USB Debugging - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, here's the situation. My girlfriend dropped her S5 and the screen cracked. At first you could see part of the screen, but overnight that stopped working and it's completely black now. The digitizer kind of works, I can unlock the phone but don't know where to go from there. All I'm trying to do is restore her apps and app data to her replacement S5.
I've tried the following:
A. Backed up the the broken screen S5 via both Smart Switch and Kies 3, but for whatever reason both programs do not allow the apps to be restored to the new S5. In one of those programs it mentioned apps need to be installed first before restoring, so I tried installing a couple of apps on the new phone, but still the app restore check box in both smart switch and Kies is greyed out.
B. I pushed sidesync to the broken phone and can see that it is installed from the app backups in both smart switch and kies, but I can't open it on the broken phone so I can't get the virtual screen to work.
C. USB debugging is NOT enabled on the broken phone. I tried blindly navigating but I'm not even sure if I'm getting anywhere.
D. Bought the Samsung USB to HDMI adapter cable. I can get it to work with the new S5, but don't get a signal when connecting it to the broken S5.
My approach so far is to try and get USB Debugging enabled. Then I could use one of the Android virtual screen programs download and run Helium to backup apps and app data, or try a 3rd party Android Transfer PC program (tried one but requires USB debugging). Here are my questions that hopefully someone can answer:
1. I read somewhere that you can enable USB debugging by flashing a custom kernel that has USB Debugging/ADB enabled. Would it be possible to modify a stock NK2 kernel so that it has USB debugging enabled and then I could then flash the modified NK2 kernel to the broken S5? It is recognized in Odin and I'm fairly sure I can get it into Download mode.
2. Would taking apart the broken S5 allow me to possibly fix/mend whatever is broken or disconnected and preventing the HDMI cable from working?
3. Is there some way to restore Apps and App data from the Kies 3 or Smart Switch backups to the new S5? It seems very strange to offer backups of Apps and data in in both programs, but not allow them to be restored to the same make and model replacement phone.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know, I'm willing to try anything. Thanks!
Notes:
If I had done any of the following I could have avoided this mess. (1) Turn on USB debugging (2) Run Samsung sidesync at least once on the phone before it broke, it seems to automatically start if you've gone past the intro screen once. (3) Backed up apps and data via Helium (her phone was not rooted).

Rooted Vibrant - won't detect USB?

Just rooted using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479
When I hook up the USB cable, it no longer shows up on the phone and gives me the option to mount memory card.
How do I go about fixing that?
(and also, should I need to, how do I unroot?)
EDIT - Now works after reapplying USB settings, weird.
Re Root the phone with one click. If you cannot mount to the computer etc. then odin back to stock and then reroot, You are not the first person to use this rooting and have this happen. Not sure why may be just a batch of phones this method doesn't work with.......
I had the same problem and solved it by allowing USB Debugging mode. When you use ROM Manager and CWR, it actually tells you to leave the phone in the USB Debug mode, maybe the connections issue is the reason?

[Q] Backup Nexus 4 with broken digitizer

Hello
Yesterday, I shattered my glass and digitizer though the lcd and phone are correct.
I'm wondering how much does lg or google charge for repair and is it lengthy process.
Also I'd like to know what are my option to backup the phone. USB debuging is disabled but the phone is rooted and unlocked.
I don't think there is a remote control app that can be installed without user input and I don't think I can enable USB debuging without screen input.
So I guess, I'm stuck with a nandroid backup though I'm not sure what is included. I believe it includes everything but the USB storage ?

Yes, a nandroid includes everything but the data/media folder.
You could however blindly boot in recovery, then use adb to copy the data/media/0 folder (the sdcard).
Soo, boot in recovery, and use this command
adb pull data/media/0 C://NexusSD
Thanks

[Q] Replacement device USB woes

Received a replacement device yesterday that is NG2. No big deal as I CF-Rooted it, then placed TWRP on it. Did a backup of initial state and went to transfer a rom to SD card and realized the phone would not connect
to PC as a device. Now I have 2 other S4's in the house and they connect immediately so it is not a driver issue with the computer(Win8.1), or USB cable. The 2 other S4's immediately are recognized by the computer.... I
have found that this one is recognized only while in Download mode, but when booted, nothing. I reinstalled the backup I first created and did a wipe 3x and I was able to get it to go into USB mode only 1x. The USB
icon appeared in the upper left of the screen and Kies recognized the device for the first time. After that I thought I was good so I went to the CF-Root installed Superuser app and opened it. It prompted about knox so
I ran it for knox disable. Bam, no more USB. What is going on here? I have rooted and worked with 5 or 6 different S4's with no issues. This is my first at NG2, and I want to point out that it is not activated yet as well.
Does not completing the activation trigger something? I am just trying to figure out if I should just return and swap for another. I have tried to reflash back to stock and wipe and it no longer offers the USB connection I
was able to achieve at the 1 point. This is an odd one and again, it is NOT drivers or the USB cable.....
Thanks,
Lisnup65
Fixed. Returned the phone for another one.

SM-G935FD: Black broken screen with no USB debugging enabled, how to backup?

Hi all,
My Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (SM-G935FD) has broken screen after a drop. The screen is black or flickering with green, but I think that it still reacts to touch. The firmware was upgraded to Oreo stock very recently, and the phone is not password or pattern protected. USB debugging is disabled (it has never been enabled) and the phone is OEM protected, so flashing a custom recovery with ODIN doesn't work (I tried). I'd like to backup the data, and I need to find a way to enable USB debugging for that. I see two options:
- Boot into maintenance mode to activate USB debugging in spite of the black screen, using physical keys. The thing is that I can't seem to boot into maintenance mode with that version of the phone following instructions found online (maybe this maintenance mode is specific to some versions or carriers, or am I missing something here?).
- Blindly activate USB debugging using an external keyboard. To do that, I would greatly appreciate help from one of you to know the exact sequence of keys.
Hope I can get this working!
Thanks
No one with a keyboard and OTG adapter to help me on that?
Thanks!

ATT Galaxy S5 will not connect to computer

Hi Group... Newbie here and I am sure you will figure that out by my questions and terminology ... I am a Hardware tech specializing in Microsoldering...and Iphones at that. I just bought out another store with loads of devices I am attempting to fix and sell. I have been successful on most all of them, and now have an Att Galaxy S5 that I am getting trolled by.
It powers on (Has an unlocked padlock) while booting. but all APK's ive tried says its not rooted...
I wrote Att unlock and got approved with unlock code (Not attached to an account, not lost or stolen, clean IMEI).
I restored it using power/Home/Volume up (Padlock still unlocked)
I plugged it to computer to use ODIN to restore back to original Stock but phone will not connect to computer.
Developer mode is on and debugging checked... no drop down and not recognized by computer at all. Thinking it could be a charging / Data port (Even though it charges with computer), I swapped the logic board into another "Known Good" housing that does connect. It made 0 difference.
all other Galaxies connect just fine so Cable / USB Port / Drivers all appear okay.
Since I cannot use computer and ODIN, I wanted to try SD Card to restore original Rom... but nothing I am trying works Any ideasany

install this first
https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/others/android-usb-driver-for-windows
when you put phone in download mode that time Odin should see the phone, if its not then also change USB cable, PC
under developer option check if its listed for charging only or mtp
also on dial pad try this
type *#0808# and enable MTP.
Gave up on this one...Can close post
Thank you for your suggestion but have tried all of that. I have 7 others that connect fine...same model with same cord and same computer. Have the Drivers, tried everything under *#0808#... However, I have tried testing D+ and D- as well and all is good. Changed u7000 as well and no change. I'm pretty certain that it has to be a hardware issue so I just gave up and put it in my parts bin as I don't know Android hardware the way I know Iphones and have too many hours in it to make it worth while
