I don't think this FroYo release is what will be the mass OTA push they were talking about to come in the next couple weeks... while it is awesome on so many levels, there seem to be enough little bugs in need of a little extra polishing that this is more likely a final Beta than actual first release. Anyone else think so?
This is currently being released OTA to all Nexus Ones, you mean when they release it to other phones? I'm sure there will be some patches here and there as usual.

From my understanding, this has only been released OTA to Google employees and media review devices, and nobody else. I have yet to see any confirmation from Google they started OTA of FroYo, and a Google Android developer tweeted earlier a sarcastic sounding statement along the lines "Woke up, guess FroYo OTA started today?" and he is one of the top developers at Google.
So, I say just a thought, this isn't the OTA that will be released to the masses... of course could be totally wrong, but it doesn't feel nearly polished enough to be it.
I wouldn't be mad at all if what you are saying is true.. Cyanogen MOD for some reason just "feels" better than Froyo. Don't know why, this update is a little meh.. showing off Flash to friends will be fun of course.

What? When I got my G1, I checked out my roots (pun intended) and rocked RC29 for a week. I don't see any real difference between it and 2.2

Can you imagine Cyan, or Enom, or Modaco and FroYo! Oh I can't wait for that. There is a huge speed difference between this and stock 2.1 It is like putting a custom ROM on with a good kernel.
If you want to show off flash really well, youtube is great! There are some nice sites otherwise, of course, but I am really impressed with youtube... loads fast and is smooth.

Can you give a list of all these bugs/issues you are experiencing?
After playing with this build for the past 6 hours, I can't think of a single issue.
Must be an issue with your phone : P
I agree. My 3g seems worse so far & I can't seem to be able to get 'move app to SD card working

First off, it never re-downloaded my apps like so many other people say it did... and yes, I wiped properly, and I even re-flashed from a fresh download. I even went back to a 2.1, and it had my list of downloads(I also have back up setting turned on), come back to 2.2, won't do it... must hate my gmail account or something.
As well, it doesn't wake properly... taking me a couple pushes sometimes, perfect other times. And never had this issue before... also doesn't exist when I went back to 2.1 for a moment to test if I was nuts or not.
thirdly, reboot your phone and tell me how your widgets are doing (although this could be the widgets more than the base OS).
Thirdly, maybe related to the second issue, have had a fair number of odd slow downs and freezes here and there while doing nothing major.
Next up, noticed it is taking multiple presses at times to open apps, beyond "normal" in quantity and consistency. Could be part of the odd slow down.
Finally, there is a list of other issues people are talking about as well...
Like I said, it just seems to have enough little bugs in need of polishing that this isn't it. Nothing major, just seems that there are some small things.
And this isn't to knock it or any of that... just saying it is a thought of mine that this isn't what the mass market OTA will be... very, very, very close, but it is the final Beta IMHO, sort of thing.
Also, to emphasis, I wiped properly, flashed two different versions, and compared to ere27 as well to make sure I wasn't smoking crack.

My point was that Google's definition of polished isn't a completely bug free type environment. Granted, alot of that comes from the fact that they're still building the OS, so there's always new enhancements coming and such. I just wouldn't mind the occasional bug fix that brought nothing new, if you get what I'm trying to say.

Funny story... I didn't even know Android re-installed Apps until Vic Gundrota mentioned it during the I/O Keynote Day 2. I had to re-wind, I was like "what? since when??"
Perhaps it's something that doesn't work on rooted phones, but I have never have Android reinstall any apps, ever, including from my G1 days, and from hopping around Nexus One ROMs. When I left Sense UI for 2.2 today, it didn't reinstall apps either, so again my theory is that it doesn't work for rooted users...?
Otherwise, I have no idea, it's never worked for me. Titanium Backup FTW.

Hmm, haven't had any of these issues. That sucks
I don't know, this seems VERY polished to me. Coming from the Sense UI, which was of course a hacked port from 2 months ago (Desire source code only released just a few days ago), the scrolling etc is like night and day! Everything just flies and feels like butter.
Aside from SORELY missing my HTC Widgets, I am LOVING FroYo!
First, Android DOES reinstall apps, but only for some reason not when you root and flash a custom ROM, or if you flash a stock ROM after having run a rooted custom ROM. My N1 is stock... I had my original N1 replaced due to dust. When I received my replacement, I logged in and all my apps automatically redownloaded, along with my bookmarks, and saved Wifi networks.
Second, some widgets may not work properly because the devs haven't updated the programs yet. For example, I use SMS Unread Count, and the Gmail widget no longer works, whereas the Dialer and Messaging widgets do. I'm sure it'll be fixed once the devs update their apps.

LOL... after constantly "chasing the dragon" with my G1, I decided to stay unrooted and stock with the N1. Unless something REALLY compelling was available for rooted phones, of course, which is certainly not the case thanks to built in tethering and upcoming Apps2SD.
Btw, I have to ask... and you can answer via PM if you prefer... how do you feel after having played with Froyo and Sense on the N1?

I love FroYo! Flash is amazing.
I can't wait to go into work and show my buds (iphone users) Hulu on my phone! Muwhahahahahahahahahah!!!
And wow, I can finally use Bluetooth now!
I will say though, the main reason I love Sense UI is because of the widgets. I find the whole icons-barfed-all-over-the-screen that Android (and iPhone OS) do *extremely* ugly. That and the stock/downloadable Android widgets are all different sizes, different colors, themes etc.... Disgusting!!!
The Sense UI widgets were elegant, consistent, all the same size, and best of all, extremely functional. I loved easily scrolling through the FriendStream/Twitter widgets; the beautiful weather widget with home screen animations; the stocks/agenda widgets... Just beautiful. A plethora of information at a glance, without even opening an app.
Now looking at the stock Android Twitter/Facebook widgets I'm forced to put on my home screens and seeing only 1 single update, having to press the left and right arrows, and both being different colors (and different colors than the black bar widgets)... Ugh...
After showing off FroYo for a few days, I will probably switch back.
Cyanogen 2.2 + HTC Sense Widgets would be my dream ROM
were we supposed to wipe even if our phone is not rooted? Because I did nit and everything works great but that would make me worry if I was supposed to have wiped.
As for 2.2 I had several bugs on 2.1 that made eclair seem not entirely stable I dont think google has quite the standard youre expecting, of course in my opinion you have every right to hold them to a high standard google themselves constantly takes aim at apple which is very solid software wise. Android to me though seems more capable if less polished, and i think that's better, plus android is young maybe after they get the major updates out of their system they will go back and polish it up. But flash and tether work great for me and ive had less if none of some of the bugs I had as of yesterday, im on top of the world so far!

Interesting comments. I was a fan of Sense when I had the G1... but it was just too damn slow. I'm sure it's hot on the N1... but I've been enjoying the stock ROM too much. May have to consider Sense if it becomes fully functional in the future...

Just saw on Twitter that NVIDIA has announced the release of Android 5.1 for Tegra Note 7 and Shield Portable.
https://twitter.com/nvidiashield/status/624279523572498434
I'm not seeing it, but am currently rooted.
Anyone have the zip?
cant see it either...
it got available for the shield portable devices. i read that news on androidpolice.com
but didn't know that nvidia said it is available for our TN7 (which isn't true for the moment). maybe it needs a few days to roll out to every one.
Just got it on my tegra note 7, installing now

I have also received it here in India. Captured the OTA as well. It is tegra_note_7_system_update_3.0__5.1.zip file size 446 MB.
here is the ota update just in case someone needs it Android 5.1 ota update

Seriously, I'm disappointed too. We waited months for it and now it lacks it's charm.
Some people are saying that it's faster than before and even high-end games are not lagging even a bit.
I didn't try any game like that yet, but it still feels a bit laggy anyway.
Plus, the thing I miss the most is the split system of notifications on the left, and quick setting on right. And we can't change performance settings like before such as to use 2-cores. My quick settings widget is not working either.
I just updated, and I'm already missing my 'old tablet'.

Thanks for that. That's one problem less.
Man i used to love this tablet a lot! It's a bit ruined now.
I still think NVIDIA should release smaller updates to better the layout and options. The notification bar is so narrow, it feels like I'm using my phone. Though, I don't have high hopes given how much time it took for this update. :fingers-crossed:
just a heads up System boot and recovery images have been pulled and test for Lollipop and uploaded to server. Now to work on updating the super tool to version 3.0 Lollipop

this update is a joke, now the tablet feels like a cheap **** with crappy graphics chip.. why the hell did they released if its gonna lag so badly ? if they said this update dont come because of this then i would be ok... now games that didnt lag before like clash of clans lags.. its like micro freeze what the hel lis this nonsense ? do i have to buy a new tablet now ? and i have a weird battery bug, it goes from 100% backwards to like 97% and below even if it says its charging with cable in....
Some improvements are there

The stylus recognition has improved immeasurably ,and thats the only positive thing that i can say about the update.
I'm going to try clearing out all the app caches or reinstall my apps. This is so much slower than before, and it commonly freezes up for a few seconds...especially when switching apps.
Before, we could control our processor to save battery by reducing the number of cores used. That option is gone completely.
I see no noticeable upside to the lollipop update.

Before everyone trashes this update, someone should try a full factory reset... I've fixed many issues with previous updates by doing this, and with an update this big, I'd suspect it could help.

My first observations after upgrade:
- system is smooth and fast, but the fact is that it was such before upgrade as well;
- smart battery saving leave you less options as before; you can't use it with screen off time adjustment any more; my impression is that with no battery saving you achieve less uptime than before and with smart battery the same as before but with more restrictions;
- overall color specter moved toward blue and a lot of white; light color letters on white background are sometimes difficult to read;
- safetynet (indicator of secure applications like Android Pay and Pokemon) fails wit the last upgrade; it passed with MM and first N upgrade 336;
- still no trace of wifi calling.
Camera is subject to more deep and demanding analyze which may follow latter.
Overall I'll be glad to get safetynet back and wifi calling sometimes soon.

It says something like:
This update optimizes the system and stability and makes the phone run more smooth. It repairs Taobao app text dialog box on order to prevent blocking input method. It also repairs the problem that call recording can’t add the specific contact. Further, the problems that outgoing call can’t be placed and phone can’t be connected to WIFI are fixed as well. Removed error that Talkback can’t be used. Fixed HuaweiShare autolaunch after WIFI download rate is reduced. Fixed issues with 123006?? and banking (shopping??) apps like Taobao. Power consumption is optimized in order to extend battery life. Screen brightness parameters optimization.
The translate is result of mutual efforts of me and GoogleTranslate and it is far from perfect.
My first impressions after update:
The system is stable and ready for the transition from beta to the production version. It is responsive, smooth and fast. No substantial deficiencies could be detected. There are still some glitches that should be improved though:
1. In order to make the outlook white as a snow (combined with sea blue) the producer made some application text hard to read (white on the bright)
2. Using the power saving mode gives you insane 6 hours of SOT. But the mode fixes screen on when passive to 30 secs time and it can't be adjusted. What could be really annoying in some situations. I would have easily sacrificed 1 hour of SOT if I had option to turn off the screen manually.
3. SafetyNet (connected with payment and other safety apps) fails after every upgrade. Thankfully so far I had it back in a few days and I hope that it will happen this time too. I think that the failure is connected to beta status of the upgrade: Google might consider upgrade as a test version of the system (safe applications don't work on the rooted phone, custom recovery, unlocked bootloader or test versions of the system). I don't understand the mechanism on which the functionality suddenly returns: is it by Huawei's intervention, Google app upgrade or simply recognizing the upgrade as real, not test version.
Finally, there is an improved custom ROM for AL10 and AL00 (HRT-Kangvip) if someone with rooted phone wanna try: http://club.huawei.com/thread-11821416-1-1.html (use GoogleTranslate).

From my personal experience i have seen that tmobile update make the phone snappier, better battery life etc or the other way around even when they only state is only a security patch update
I got the update and now I can't login to my phone. It wants me to put in the password (just once, then I can use fingerprint again like before). But I never setup a PIN and now I can't get into my phone!!
at a "whopping" 51Mb, that's not a lot of updates. The "faster" effect is probably placebo.

"Futher improve to perfomance" so kernel mods changing and modifying a few codes for better perfomance which take no memory is also a placebo effect. Gonna have to explain that to all the kernel and tweakers developers in xda.
This is not a new OS or OS upgrade. Doesnt need to be 1gb to get better improvement on the phone. U can try the update and see. Im loving the speed.

Every update says the same darn thing. If you go look at the google code revisions, you'll be disappointed. Besides, I did this update many hours ago, not one iota difference in noticeable speed on my NON ROOTED STOCK device. I reboot every morning so I get the nice, fresh "fastest" possible speeds, at least until standard android and samsung bog downs occur by the end of the day.
But, if your gut says you feel a difference, more power to you.
About Kernel mods here. They take existing base and tweak specifically for speed at a trade off of potential stability. Google and Samsung, neither are well known for real speed improvements. They shoot for stability over mass numbers of devices vs speed. Their professional developers that know and work with the code day in and day out would nothing more than love to tweak it and massively optimize it for even their own devices but they have to march the corporate line.

That happened with me while on MM. It took 3 factory resets from recovery before it let me in without a pin.

If u look back when this phone was release a year ago and all thr updates tmobile has done it s now. Completly different phone, speed and perfomance wise. Phone also doesnt hit up like a toaster like when the phone was release.
Is funny u said to go and check every update. Cause if u do the same here in xda u are going to find out most member talking about improvement, battery life and other thnlings. But i guess all of them are wrong cause is all a PLACEBO effect. If samsung didnt care about perfomance why is the U version the fastest and better version. This is why almost everyone is waiting on the nougat U version including me.
Feel sorry for u that u have to restart your phone everyday. U most have a lemon GS7 edge. I never have to do this to feel my phone fresh and fast.

This is pure BS! When I searched the web for this issue I found that this has happened before and as far back as at least 2 years ago!!
I mean, this seems like a straightforward fix from Google's side...Have the updates NOT trigger PIN requirement if there's was no PIN present. For anyone that's more familiar with such things, am I oversimplifying it here? It's just that easy isn't it?
I guess i will be updating in the am.

Seems like a small change, but I am getting better standby time. Left the phone unplugged all night last night after the update, a wipe of the cache, and a full charge. Woke up today it still had 96% battery left at least a 3% improvement over before the update.
I'll run the test again tonight to see if I get similar results. It's a pretty nice improvement if it stays that way.

Is this with ambient always on display?. I love this feature dont really want to disable it.

UPDATE: just did the update. Phone feel much snappier and fingerprint works much faster. It was already good enough with nougat update but now is even more accurate

Probably felt faster simply because you restarted the phone as part of the installation process.

No I leave ambient off. I have my Gear Fit 2 so there really is no need to have my display on.
I bought the phone from Sprint and used it for Sprint; then now Cricket. Sprint has terrible service here; I roamed for days sometimes traveling for work. I would swear the phone freezes and lags more when you are in that funk area of having no service or poor service.
Most of my freezes are when I'm driving; that's most of my phone use anyway. I've used app killers and memory boosters, and I keep reading that those actually do more harm.
I have an iphone for work and it never freezes; and my best android experience was with a Huawei Honor 8; it had no freeze to speak of.
Is it the phones hardware, how it plays with apps, or does it just need more ram, or are there bad/buggy apps? It's not uncommon for me to use Waze, Uber Driver, Glympse, and an app that either plays audio, or sometimes video like DirecTV. It will almost always freeze.
I've done resets and restores. Wonder if a fresh reset and reinstall of apps would have any good effect?

Do not use any app killers or memory booster. They do more harm then benefit.
If you are on Nougat, update to Oreo Beta 3. Or wait for a few days. Essential will be pushing 8.1 beta soon, hopefully within this week.
I use Waze everyday, and have never had freezes. I'm running OB3.

Thanks for the suggestions,it just seems like beta builds, for someone who uses the phone to make money (where you need 100 reliability), are not the best choice.
I'm not saying Waze is an issue, that's just one of several apps that o have open during the problem times. When I do use the ram boosters they typically indicate they are finding almost 1 gb to free up.

FREE RAM is wasted RAM. As per feedback here and in other forums, Oreo Beta builds have been much more reliable than Nougat builds.
I never ran Nougat, so can't compare unfortunately. But OB2 and OB3 has been rock solid for me.

Hmm. Maybe I'll give it shot tonight. Can you go back to nougat if it doesn't do well. For that matter when will the production build of Oreo be out?

I would suggest you wait for a few days. Apparently Essential has fixed a lot of bugs in 8.1 beta. They did mention that the may release it within this week. If you don't feel comfortable on Beta, you can go back to Nougat, but you will loose your data.

@cfclay - Today, in order to help combat sluggishness and choppy scrolling, I turned on Force GPU rendering in developer options. It's helped in my opinion. That's usually a setting developers use when testing, but since this is more or less a test build, I figured I'd give it a shot. I also changed my transition animation settings to .5x from 1x. While that won't help smoothness, if you're getting laggy experience it may help speed some things up a bit for you. May be worth a shot and may just give the perception things have improved, but overall I've been very pleased with the performance of the oreo beta 3 release.
@indian84 - where is everyone getting this information that oreo 8.1 beta may come out on friday (I've seen that mentioned in several places) or in the next few days. The only thing I can find is where Essential just said they were skipping 8.0 to jump straight to 8.1. Can you point me to where timeframes have been mentioned? Thanks in advance.
Hey, I sideloaded Essential Phone Oreo Beta 3 (OPM1.170911.254 and I have a dumb question- how can you tell it applied. There were no errors on the computer, but I think there may have been something on the phone that said installation aborted, just barely noticed before I chose to reboot.

@cfclay - Easy, go to settings, system, about phone, and look at the build number.

Should have the build you were trying to flash if it was successful, like at the bottom of my screenshot.
So going back to your original issue. Sprint did cause the phone to lag and do weird things. That was a given. I was able to get out and use TMobile. the difference is night and day. I do want to point out that cricket caps it's lte speeds at 8mbits, this is from having cricket before and it would sometimes drop to 3 and 4 is more consistent. I'd check the snrs and the speed you're getting from cricket , in 2018 8mbit cap feels a little low

I'm on the unlimited 2 plan and getting 3 Mbps lol. Still, works beautifully compared to Sprint. I do see your point though. This is my first month to try this service, and I've used about 10gb a week and it works just fine, so I'm sticking to it.

Not to burst your bubble...
But effing with the GPU does not fix the issue... It's just your rose colored glasses...
Neither performance for the governor... Nor any setting in developer options will fix it...
Though if it works for you... Good...

Yeah, it hasn't fixed anything.
The lag and freezes has nothing to do with being on Sprint versus being on Cricket or any other carrier. I get the random freezes and lags too and it's really frustrating. The phone throttles and unthrottles itself at random times with no rhyme or reason. I'm all stock, not rooted, no beta software and the phone would stutter, lag, freeze while i'm doing something mundane. Also touchscreen issues at times.
I already have (had) my device setup the way i want, so not interested in starting all over just to try/test out beta software. I'll just wait for the official Oreo to drop.
Certain apps seem to really cause problems. I reset my phone and installed most of the apps again. When you connect carplay and use another GPS app like glympse, it can be a complete dumpster fire. Locked up on me twice today
