Hi guys. My almost brand new Samsung Galaxy S4 has just stopped working.
I was doing homework and one of my friends text me I look at the text and lock my phone screen and that was the last time I saw my screen working properly.
I later tried to turn on the screen but I had no luck, the screen wouldn't show anything, it was just blank but surprisingly it recognised my touch and made the sound. I could unlock my phone and even turn on apps by guessing where I kept them. I could turn on music and it would work but the screen would remain completely blank.
My phone was rooted and it had the stock rom but it had a custom kernel which enabled over clocking to 2.3 ghz (Ktweakers kernel I think) but the limit was set to 1.89 so I don't that that was the cause.
When I restart my phone the screen where it says "Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505", I think its called the splash screen? I'm not sure, anyways instead of it being black with white writing, its really weird and is bright white with very light white writing. This is the only time the screen actually works, and the other time it works is when you try to put it into download mode but both times the screen is bright white and everything is very light and faded. After the "GT-I9505" screen goes away the screen goes black the blue LED still flashes and you can hear the samsung boot sound and the phone boots up properly without the screen.
What could be the cause of all this? I have literally kept this phone on top of my head. I have done nothing to harm it in any way what so ever. I have never dropped it. From day one I had a thick case incase I bumped it and damaged it. Anyone else having this problem? Or am I the only one? Do you guys think I'll be able to fix this or will I have to take it back to the store?
Thank you!

U can try to go to stock recovery and try to wipe cache and see if it boots up
If u have custom recovery wipe cache / dalvik/ fix permissn and reboot
else u should download a stock firmware and flash it using odin it will work incase even after u flash a firmware and again stuck at Logo etc go to stock recovery and wipe cache and reboot

Thank you for replying! I had cwm recovery installed but I reverted back to stock mod through odin. Now I am trying to wipe cache through stock recovery but the problem is that I can't see anything that I am doing. I am relying on pictures of the stock recovery. I know that my phone goes into recovery mode but it does not show anything on the screen. I am assuming I get stuck on the part where there are lots of no's and one yes.
Would It be possible if you could post a picture of that (The screen with all the no's and the one yes) because maybe then I can wipe the cache.
And I am already downloading the stock firmware, but it is taking forever because if the extremely slow internet. But the thing is that I don't see any logos, it boots fine but it doesn't show anything on the display. But I also know that the display is working because it still shows the "GT-I9505" screen. I'll post my progress here.

Okay so I downloaded the stock rom and flashed it with odin and it basically did nothing. Rather before flashing the stock rom, the splash screen would show (the screen that says "Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-i9505") but now it does not show anything. It turns on normally like it should, it makes the boot sound but does not show anything on the screen. If you have the lights turned off, you can see a flicker when it turns on and thats the only time the screen actually lights up. What do you think I should do? I still think it might be a software issue. Also I don't think I have warranty because I have flashed my phone a few times. Its still very upsetting that this has happened because honestly I haven't done anything to this phone.

Haha no I don't think so Well I'm still taking it back to Singapore but I will probably have to pay for the repair.
Does your screen not have cracked (from the inside ) ?

I don't think it does. Because before flashing stock rom, the splash screen would show and it had no cracks. So no actual damage, I still think it is a software issue but I don't know how to fix it :/ I still can't decide if I should take it to Samsung (which will take like a few months) or I can take it to a local repair shop and they can look at it which shouldn't take more than a week.

Repairing it doesn't take very long, taking it to the repair centre will take time. I bought my phone from Singapore and I have to take it there if I want to get it repaired. I took it to the Samsung repair centre in Bangladesh, they said they can't repair my model because they don't support it here :/

The same exact thing happened to me yesterday. Opened a text from a friend, tried turning on the screen and black screen. Thinking of sending it to samsung but do you have a solution yet? Was the problem diagnosed?
My Samsung galaxy s4 i9505 screen is dead--
I woke up this morning and my phone is still charging... But I cannot see my any data in the screen.. But my phone is still working.. I can receive phone call with my headset.. I cannot see anything in my screen.. It gone black.. Can anybody help me to fix this.. Or is this a firmware issue.. My phone has been rooted and installed official android 4.3 jellybean. Please help!!!
Just today I spend the same, except that the screen starts flashing, and at times the picture and the picture looked twice was very unstable, it restarts, and for the image of the i9505 without problem.
He ruled out a physical problem as it starts each. Device failure begins after displaying the Device Model
.
The touch and other features of the device, work perfectly. Try booting in recovery mode and I could not look very bad image.
In trying to backup my data with titanium to try to do a factory reset, began to regain normalcy. And right there my device works perfectly.
Bring 7 hours working normally my device. But I have fear of failing again. And now looking for information about possible solution. No warranty now.
What do you recommend? It's failure is becoming common. My device is doomed to die without remedy? Thank you very much for your answers in advance. Use translator apologies. Speak Spanish

Hello Guys, this issues is very common when you rooted the device and install Wanam Xposed.
You can try flash a stock Rom and stock Kernel with odin, try to swipe cache and dalvin using ADB.
Good Luck!
After flashing Carbonrom 6/22 nightly my screen developed black lines that are permanent on the right side. They do not go away in recovery. I walked away from my phone when I flashed it so I didnt catch it doing anything weird until a came back a few minutes later. I can live with few thin lines on my screen but now the lg logo has started to melt and artifact during boot and it stays like that. I can only get it to boot maybe 1 out of every 10 times with a normal screen otherwise the screen will stay melted or artifacting while I hear notification beeps and ringing.
So my questions are:
Am I doing more damage everytime I boot? Or is it done breaking.(I have since flashed dr87 twrp with thermal safeguards)
Is there any tricks like sticking it in the freezer or something to bring the screen back?
Will I only need to change the LCD or is something broken on the board also?
Any and all help is appreciated.

I did flash stock rom but it made no difference. Ive never had a hardware issue happen from flashing a rom and I have flashed tons on many devices.
You and me both, brother.

A few days ago, I was changing the capacitive buttons backlight to always off when all of the sudden the buttons went unresponsive. They were still lit up for a little bit, but eventually they just stopped. I didn't do anything to the screen, other than installing a glass screen protector the day before. I've tried a factory reset, re-flashing oc3 and just today I reflashed nb1. I don't think any apps were causing this cause I booted into safe mode numerous times and it still wasn't working. I did however have to replace the usb charging board in early august because I had some minor water damage and it wouldn't charge, but it's worked fine untill now. On an unrelated note, I can not get it to boot into recovery mode, and whenever i restart it it shows the samsung custom screen but in the top right corner it says Recovery booting...

Ok this part doesn't happen anymore it just shows the stock boot logo.
Has nobody else had this problem?
Sounds like a hardware failure issue. The normal troubleshooting step to determine hardware failure is to flash back to stock to see if the problem goes away, and in your case with both OC3 and NB1 the issue is still present. Sorry. I don't know anything else you can try.
Phone screen is black, but phone still "works".. Cannot get screen to come back on!
I have no idea what happened, 5 minutes after being in my pocket I pulled it out and the screen was un-responsive.
The notification light is still on, power light, etc. The power button works, I can push and hold and reboot and the two bottom buttons on the phone light up. I was able to "swipe" my password and it vibrated and accepted it, I am getting vibrate notifications too. I just have a black screen and I can't figure out what to do!
I am rooted, but I haven't had any changes to the phone in a few weeks since I had rooted. I tried using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395 but I cannot figure out how to get the device to show up in the program to use.
I am at a loss on what to do...
No Samsung logo if you remove the battery for 30 seconds, replace it and power on normally?

Nope, no nothing. No logos, no screen flicker, no colors of any sort - just black. The LED goes blue as it boots up, etc, so I know it does power up.. and once it is done I can even swipe my password and it gives the feedback vibrate..
Just in case this was an issue with the root and whatnot I flashed the stock with Odin and I still am getting black screened.
I contacted VZW support last night, and the chat rep told me they would have to just replace the phone. I am guessing this may be a hardware issue.
Yea if there is no logo whatsoever when you first turn it on, it sounds like a hardware issue, not a ROM issue
I forget exactly which logo shows first (S5 I think) that isn't part of the ROM afaik, the Samsung animated logo is the ROM, so if you don't even get the one before the Samsung animation, doesn't sound good
Is it the G900F? If yes, the only thing I can think that might possibly work, is this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/g900f-debrick-img-lollipop-t3240626
Don't use unless it's the G900F

I don't believe it's G9000F... and I am fairly certain now that it isn't a software issue since everything else 'loads', just not my damn screen.. lol.
Thanks for your help though
The reason I posted that link, is, if the bootloader has corrupted, it is possible you won't get any logo at all, and that debrick image basically tricks the phone into using the MicroSD card to boot into download mode from, where you can recover the main storage
It should tell you under the battery which model S5 it is
If the screen doesn't even light up, then it sounds more like hardware
See if this gives you access
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2786395
It is connector issue.
Either connector is slight loose or if not then need to Change the connector.
My one has same problem.
Solved for less than 10$.

Hi there,
I was turbo charging on the boot screen (where the large battery image is displayed and no Android OS has loaded), and something strange happened when I pressed the power button to boot up the OS. The battery image disappeared, and in it's place were random dots that kept flashing on and off (normally the battery image displays when the backlight flashes on). I was able to boot by holding the power button down, and Android loaded as normal. The Fastboot screen shows correctly, and recovery works; however, now when I go to charge without the OS loaded, there is no image displayed (not even corrupt dots) when the backlight switches on, where there should be the large battery icon. The backlight flashes on and off even after I disconnect the USB cable.
I'm worried that I won't be able to charge at all in the boot screen if I run dry completely.
Edit: well, I just tested it again, and it seems that it still charges the phone in boot mode, even if the battery icon isn't displayed.

Your phone's got soft bricked haha!! Enjoy.
Usually reflashing logo.bin should fix this.
If it is a error that is. If there's nothing wrong then why bother.

I've flashed a logo.bin and it didn't fix the issue. I assume the logo.bin just modifies the fastboot logo, rather than the battery charging screen, though?
I'm just interested to know what went wrong, since all I did was press the power button to turn on the phone whilst it was charging... nothing out of the ordinary except the phone was very warm due to turbo-charge.
There still might be something wrong when the phone completely runs out of power, which I haven't tested yet. I might even have a hard brick then.

I would worry a little about that and if it's under warranty I'd probably send it in. As far as letting it go completely dead, Motorola warns against doing that. I got that from Motorola folks directly and was told that it may not come back in rare cases.

I'm afraid I have voided the warranty by unlocking the bootloader, but thanks for trying to help.
Edit: Managed to get the battery screen in bootloader to correctly display by reflashing stock image. So, mayank.bhola1, haha! My phone isn't soft-bricked.
You could try a factory reset of you don't mind reinstalling everything.

If you knew that was a way to fix it, why didn't you say so in the first place, instead of taunting me with "hahaha" etc?
I did not touch the fastboot charging screen by physically writing data to it, so can only assume heat corrupted it somehow. I would caution everyone to be wary with turbo charging.
