I don't think a lot of people have tried all 3 options to give an objective opinion. I've only tried connecting to my phone's hotspot and my home router and it works fine on both, however it sometimes takes a while to connect. I would even select the SSID manually and hit "Connect" and it wouldn't do anything. Then I just leave it alone and it connects all by itself in a few minutes.
I haven't used a USB modem so I can't say anything about that.

Any hiccups or gotchas when using your phone as a hotspot? Does the phone get hot? Does it drain the phone battery even though plugged into the charger? What's the longest you've had the phone running as a hotspot at a given time?
I haven't had any problems with this really. The phone doesn't get any hotter than it usually does (I have a Galaxy S6 Edge). The battery still charges while hotspotting when it's plugged in to my car charger. I've used it for a couple of hours at a time with no problems. The only issue you MAY find is the battery drain even while plugged in, bt that will really depend on your phone and your charger so that's a "try and see" situation.

I tested it out today for hours (using phone as hotspot) and you're right - it's a stable experience, no connection issues. The phone didn't get hot and it basically still charged. I was presumed a mobile hotspot device would yield the best experience versus a 3G USB modem (because I saw too many posts citing connectivity issues across multiple models) and phone as a hotspot (because I feared it'll get hot and be subject to connectivity issues too), but phone as a hotspot is solid enough (and I save $20/month over the other two options).

in my radio it NEEDS to be a huawei modem or the radio wont recognize it (tried with a TP-Link but couldnt even see it).
The advantage over both phone hotspot and dedicated hotspot (and the reason i use this solution) is that it turns on with the radio, and no need to worry about unsecure network as it isnt shared.
The disadvantage is that it is a bit slow on startup, and looses connection from time to time (could be network related tho)

Yeah, that's why I was weary of going with the 3G USB modem option as most say theirs lose connection often.
The phone as a hotspot option is still working very well for me. My only complaint is that I have to manually turn it on every time I get in the car

that was one of the reasons i didnt want to use the hotspot solution. It didnt help my dedicated hotspot solution was in my trunk and the "on" indicator was broken

Not the one i used... I needed to turn it on when i needed it (usually just before i started my car). The one i used had a power saving mode so if it wasnt used for 15 min it would turn off to save power on the internal battery (7h capacity)

Surely there must be a way to disable that and have it power on automatically when connected to AC. I understand tehe power saving feature, but it should be possible to disable it at least when it's not using it's own battery.
In my case, I use my phone to share the connection via wifi and I set it up to automatically start the hotspot when it's connected to the radio via bluetooth and turn it off when it disconnects. That way I don't even have to worry about turning it on/off.

I thought about setting it up that way too, but my phone doesn't automatically reconnect to the heat units Bluetooth when in range/in the car. How do you get your phone to auto reconnect to Bluetooth and how do you set it up so that hotspot auto starts after that connection?

It's actually the headunit that automatically reconnects. Go to the bluetooth options and check the settings for your device (after you've paired it). By default it should automaticqally reconnect though, unless you changed it, but check anyways. As for the automatic hotspot, I use an app called NFC Retag. It's meant to be for automating tasks when you use an NFC tag (hence the name, duh!) but it also supports some other trigger, such as detecting when the phone connects to a specific device via bluetooth. I'm using it since I already had it for a few things I do with NFC tags and it's worked like a charm, but I guess you could also do the same with Tasker or some other app.

Just another follow up - phone as hotspot is still very solid for me. The only problem is it cuts out temporarily at start of calls but cuts back in seconds later in a call.

From what I read 4G modems aren't compatible, only some 3G WCDMA USB modems work and those aren't very stable

I have Tasker setup on my phone to automatically activate/deactivate the wifi hotspot when it connects/disconnects bluetooth to the headunit. The headunit then automatically connects when it detects the wifi signal. Works great and I never have to touch anything or take my phone out of my pocket.

Ya, I got it to auto connect by checking the button in the Bluetooth app. The thing that sucks is phone screen needs to be awake and unlocked for hotspot to turn on. Otherwise it just sits in the background saying "Authenticating..." forever and never turning on

I believe when you tether your phone, the phone will start using which ever data connection is has access to. Wifi takes precedence over the mobile data connection if you have a wifi connection.
Or as martonikaj suggested, buy a USB wireless adapter for your computer.
Cool, I asked because I can use it at school where our computer workshop, doesn't have internet access at the moment. Too much hassle to carry one more thing lol.

I haven't tested the exact situation you are talking about. But the phone always seems to default to WiFi, when a WiFi network is available. For example, the other day, my WiFi network was down (cable internet service was down for a bit), and my phone would not switch over to the cell data network, unless I manually turned off WiFi.

that might be very tricky but it would be awesome! Following situation: Me sitting in a sub, galaxy nexus in my pocket and the nexus 7 in my hands. Now, I would like to activate Tethering via the tablet on my galaxy nexus and be online 5-6 seconds later. Anyone an idea?

Found myself in the same situation yesterday in the coach on the way home from work. Had a lap full of nexus 7 and earphones whilst trying to pull out my GNex out of my pocket hoping that the driver doesn't slam on the breaks!
Have just decided to leave tethering turned on on my GNex and when I pull out my tab, just flick on the wifi so it connects. Not ideal on battery for the GNex but it works.
I use bluetooth tether on my vision.
Find it saves a lot of battery power.
I leave the 2 devices connected constantly, for tablet talk, and just leave the option to allow bluetooth tethering turned on on my vision.
So when I don't have wifi, I just tap 'connect' on my n7 and I'm good to go

I've had the same irritation using wifi hotspot function with my GS2. Just tried the bluetooth tether and it works just fine. Many thanks for this suggestion!

I stopped using bluetooth tethering because it would autodisconnect whenever a wifi signal was around and then doesnt reconnect. As for wifi it will stay connected and maintain positive connection longer.

I leave the Bluetooth Tethering option ticked on my Galaxy Nexus and connect with my Nexus 7 (via Settings > Bluetooth > tap on Galaxy Nexus) when I need to (or just place a shortcut on your homescreen).
The problem is that Bluetooth Tethering cuts out after a few minutes (known bug) and I have to repeat. But since it cuts out, it doesn't drain the battery at all (unless I am actively using the data connection, of course).
I suggest using foxfii and PDAtablet for Bluetooth tethering. A few apps won't recognize the internet, however you don't have to worry about it cutting out. And it still uses Bluetooth so there is less battery drain than WiFi.
Just always remember while Bluetooth tethering with whichever option to turn OFF your WiFi on the tablet. If not it will keep searching for WiFi even though your BT tethered, and cause data drop.

You could probably use Tasker to kick WiFi Tethering on on your phone when it detects your tablet neaby (via bluetooth), so when you want to connect, you turn wifi and bluetooth on on the tablet.
EDIT: Of course, you can also use Tasker to turn WiFi Tether on on your phone based on your location, the absense of your work/home wifi, the time of day, and many other options or combinations of options. It's a really useful app, IMO.

I'm trying a slightly different scenario. I don't want Bluetooth tethering, I want WiFi tethering but with Bluetooth connected so I can use Tablet Talk. It almost works. For a short while it'll work that way and then the WiFi drops on my Galaxy Nexus and won't reconnect until I disconnect BT again.
I'm probably posting this in the wrong forum since I've since determined the problem is with my GNex and not my N7.
I'm curious as to how people are using BT tethering though. In my experience there are too many applications that don't work over the BT tether. Are those of you tethering over BT just using the browser? Seems far more limiting than using WiFi tether... unless of course I'm also trying to connect over BT at the same time.

I've solved my own problem... I've use FoxFi in the past with my TouchPad and didn't find it any better than the built in Tethering. Today I installed it and the add-on on my tablet, and I can safely say that this setup rocks!

So straight forward but such a revelation for me!! I always hated tethering w/ my phone cuz it sucks the battery and it gets so warm, but the BT tethering is a great alternative. Now my tablet is relevant wherever I go w/ my phone.
+1 on blue tooth.
Whenever I use wifi hotspot for any length of time, my phone will eventually time out and cut the connection. Using bt it will stay tethered for hours on end.

I was curious about this as well. I briefly tried Bluetooth tethering a few days ago with FoxFi and PdaNet, but I noticed that although I could surf the net, I couldn't get Gmail to sync. I didn't try anything else so I don't know what else doesn't work, but is this typical of Bluetooth tethering?

Just tried basic bluetooth tethering and happily sent and received email
Is basic Bluetooth tethering simply pairing the phone and tablet and that's it (no third party apps)? I tried to do that and even though the use internet connection box was checked for both devices (they won't uncheck for some reason either), I couldn't get internet working, which is why I resorted to FoxFi/PdaNet.
Like I said, auto tether from the market is the best option

When WiFi is turned on, AND CONNECTED, and I make a call using Bluetooth device the connection starts cutting. The WiFi icon in the notification bar disappears then appears again, the radio icon starts connecting/swapping between to 3G or H also the 3G/H icon changes from blue to gray, during this time the connection drops.
If the WiFi is off everything works normally. I talked to Google but no help there, it's like the first time they hear of Bluetooth issues.
The issue is same with stock ROM or AOKP built 5 on NEXUS 4
However, I use the same Bluetooth, voyager-pro hd+, with galaxy nexus 4.2.2 build jdq39 and I have no issues with it. not rooted, stock ROM
Any ideas or fix. If it was something to do with rooting or custom ROM why it was not fixed after I restored it to stock ROM? and why no issues using it on galaxy nexus having the exact same software?
Edit: just tried this on 2nd brand new nexus 4 in our household, not rooted or modified in any way, same issue

Pulled a Linksys E2500 5GHz router I wasn't using out of the closet, and disabled the onboard routing crap on the uverse 2wire router. Nexus plays nice with bluetooth at home now, even in 2.4GHz mode. Gave me a reason to stop using the uverse crap, but it's still kind of annoying that the N4 is so finicky with wifi. I'll stick it out!

Do you listen to music only? Do you try to call someone and have productive conversation over the Bluetooth, while WiFi is ON and connected? If the WiFi is ON but connected the problem is not that bad.
I tried with two devices at home, then called a friend, that lives 1000 miles away, with N4. same results. Total of three independent devices tested.
I am using Plantronics Voyager HD+, one of the best headsets out there.

I use my bluetooth for everything.. And works fine:good:
This happens on my N7 running 4.2.2. I have been using a MOGA controller and a Motorola S10 headset.
Everything with work for about 15 min then my network will disappear. When I go into WiFi, it shows no available networks, even though there are like 15 near me.
The only way to reconnect is to disable Bluetooth. Networks immediately show back up and reconnect. Then I can reenable Bluetooth and continue.
I had this issue with MOGA controller originally and wrote them. They said it is an issue with the N7 and N4 and to disable WiFi when playing games. I tested and the controller is perfect with WiFi off.
Streaming Netflix while paired to wireless headset works for about 15 and then quits. I have to toggle Bluetooth to get another 15 min out of it.

I can't even get my N4 to connect to the bluetooth in my car if wifi is turned on. It's supremely annoying. Combined with the not being able to turn bluetooth off (because you can't turn it back on without a reboot usually) it's making me hate this phone.
Anyone else have bluetooth connectivity issues with wifi on?

Tasker - a great solution.
Wish Google/LG fixed this already.
BT/WiFi collisions are a pain in the ass for mobile device engineers. But that's no excuse for Google to sign off on this product with such a bug.

Yes, the problem in the united states is with AT&T wifi router. So for people in the USA if you have att router or live in area where you have apartment complexes etc and suspect they use ATT you will have a problem. The solution is to go to WiFI settings > Advanced and choose 5G only. DO NOT use "auto" or "2.4G" option. This solves the problem. In other countries would be some other router problem. the WiFi chip on N4 does not play well with some routers around when operates at all frequencies.
That's why the confusion. some people say "all works fine" other reporting problem not suspicion they have ATT router or live near residency with one.
If you rely on wifi mostly and no 5g option then no solution.
Has nothing to do with ATT router.
I have a WNDR3700 and it happens to me on my N4 and N7's when at 2.4ghz (you can see the (dis)conntects)- moving to 5gig solves it but I loose a lot of range... (Just watch your signal meter when you are steaming over net/BT and switch between 2 and 5g - you will see the difference in behavior)
It's a Qualcomm driver issue that has not been fixed - boo on LG and Google for allowing this to get into their flagship devices and leaving it in this state for so long...
I should fire up my old N1 to stream music... Shame...
I have the same issue. I have a nexus 4 stock 4.3 rooted and if I have the wifi on and connected, when I make a call with my Jawbone Era headset I can't listen well the other person. His voice has a lot of pauses. When I turn off wifi everything is OK. This is very annoying.

just had the phone for an hour and almost right away after first setup the wifi radio disconnects/turns off and re-connects/turns on automatically every 20 seconds or so. No matter wich network I try.
Working fine with my S7 Edge laying here beside me, never had problems. I have three different networks around me I can try out.
Anyone had the same problem? I can find som info about this exact issue for the S7 Edge for some, but no solution from that works on the S8..

this is an old problem S7 had
you need to toogle in settings > connectivity > wifi > advance > smart network swithc OFF
i think this was - but dont remember well since it was a while ago - but basically you need to turn off the option of phone switching between phone and wifi data
Having the exact same problem with my Ubiquity wifi network (ie, not some janky cable company router) with my just-booted up S8. Smart switch was off by default, and after switching it 'on' and back 'off', no change.
This was the first thread I found on the topic, will update with any solutions.

Yup, Hotspot 2.0 is off for me. I've restarted the phone and the wifi access point, and my Note 5 and S7 are working fine lol. Super weird!

Many of those switches doesn't exist in my s8.
Incl hotspot.

Well I'm in Sweden and have no operator dependence. Neither for mobile or my home network (fiber connection owned by me).
This sucks though... I want this resolved

Try downloading wifi analysis app and see what it's picking up. Maybe you could try changing your wifi channel if it looks low?

No this has nothing to do with the routers or access points. I am 3 meters from the AP, its at 100% signal rate etcetera..
This has to do with Samsung and the software.

Download the wifi analysis app and see what the phone picks up.
Also in wifi settings on phone disable sleep mode and put to always on!

As I wrote I've tried all that I'm afraid. All the things that was recommended for the trouble on the s7.
have u tried going to a free wifi spot (starbucks, mcdonalds) see if the issue persists - maybe is your router refusing connection

As I wrote I have three different wifi to test with but yes makes no difference. This is a well known but not solved problem with Samsung phones.. three different makes of manufacturers, different settings with a/b/g/n and all show the same problems.
I also installed the small new update today for the firmware. Still same problem.
I'm guessing I'm about to get a replacement phone. I'll try that on Monday.

When it is connected, I'm getting my usual 100mbps speeds, but it continues to drop regularly (not the every 10secs it did when I first powered it on, but every minute or so).
One thing that was mentioned was changing channel bandwidth from '40' to '20'... I don't see anywhere to do that on the S8?

Doesn't that mean on your router?
By changing the broadcast bandwidth from 40 to 20 you will increase the signal produced (same power is covering less channels)

I had this happen on a UniFi UAP-AC-Pro network with my S8 as well. I turned off Nearby Device Scanning on the S8 under Settings-> Connections -> More Connection Settings and that seemed to fix it. Strangely, I did not have the issue on my home network which has a single UAP-AC-LR access point with an otherwise similar configuration. Not sure if this setting change was really a fix, or if I just temporarily got lucky.
If turning off Nearby Device Scanning doesn't work for anyone, it might be worth playing with other settings within your network such as Band Steering. Some of these require turning on advanced features within the UniFi controller. Also I would be curious to hear whether those who have issues are on networks with a single access point, or larger installs with multiple access points.
Very recently got the Samsung S8 and I'm having some wierd WiFi issues. When connecting to the network everything is fine i get almost maximum download/upload speeds(500/500) from my UniFi AP-AC-PRO. But after being connected for awhile 30-60mins the speed drops to around 30mbit downstream and upload around 200mbit. If i disconnect from the Wi-Fi and instantly reconnect i get full speed again. I've tried switching settings in the ap, went from everything on auto settings to static channel/transmit power and been trying vht40/80 but makes no difference. If i have smart network switching on i get disconnected and put on LTE instead. All my other devices have blazing WiFi speeds as usual. I'm gonna try turning of nearby device scanning and see if that helps.

I'm having the exact same problem as you. Wifi connects at full speed at first, then after a while speed drops. Has gone down to 1Mbps numerous times. Disconnecting then reconnecting fixes it for a while then it starts all over again. I'm connected to a TP-Link AC1900 running dd-wrt. May try going back to stock firmware on the router to see if that helps.
So has anyone come up with a permanent solution to this? I'm in the same boat with my ac-ap-pro and s8+. Disconnects every 20 seconds or so.

The modem/router in my house is mounted on a wall behind the TV unit, which is two rooms away from where I generally need internet connection. Therefore, while I pay for 25 mbps download speed, I only get about 12 mbps. I was searching for a DIY router that could streamline my internet connection until my old Samsung Galaxy Gio caught my eye while I was tidying my shelf a day ago. It got me thinking if I can repurpose it to fix my problem with the wireless internet connection, and so I'm here, typing bunch of questions for you to answer.
I've made some research on this subject and I've seen the similar threads regarding to the same purpose, yet I haven't find the answers I'm looking for, so I do need to ask my questions here.
1. I understand that nearly all Android phones cannot receive and transmit simultaneously, thus they cannot repeat the WiFi signals to extend the router's range. However, could a phone plugged in to the router, receiving the signal via an ethernet cable, transmit the signal wirelessly to other connected devices?
2. What device is required in order to turn an android phone into a WiFi repeater?
Note: Bluetooth Tethering isn't preferred due to its reputation of decreasing the connection speed.
I really need to find a solution and waiting for your answers, thank you.
The keyword is tethering. There are several apps in the Play Store which help you with it, for example fqrouter2 (might have been renamed to NetShare, if I remember correctly). Otherwise, just search for "Android device wifi repeater".

Unfortunately, Netshare happens to be incompatible with Galaxy Gio and fqrouter2 didn't seem to work for me when I gave it a try yesterday.

You could check if you ROM does support tethering out of the box.

It's Enhanced236, stock 2.3.6 with a bit difference. I'm sure it supports tethering.
I had rather good luck on a Galaxy S3 with fqrouter and a couple of other programs... fqrouter is a pita to setup and requires you to exit the app completely sometimes to get changes to apply...
That being said, this caused a HUGE amount of heat in the phone as it was working its little butt off... Of course this is a rooted device too
yeah i bet you can , try this app i dont knw if it supports old android versions but it work on expends the wifi coverage not just tethering no expend even if u recieve that connexion with a wifi try it and feedback here please

EDIT: Just realized this thread is four years old.

This should be exactly what you want. This plugs into the phone's micro usb port and the adapter has an ethernet port on it as a power port to connect to a wall charger to pass charging through to the phone and keep the battery charged at the same time.
Then you should be able to just start the built in hotspot from the settings menu and connect and devices and it should go through the ethernet connection.
Now keep in mind this is a VERY old phone with limited specs and an old version of android so even though in theory this should work its still possible it might not work as well as expected but I think its worth a try.
Regardless of whether you're trying this with an android device or even a regular range extender like a netgear or something from your ISP, its very important that you always connect ethernet. From personal experience if you try to bridge an access point and extender only using wifi with no hardwired ethernet it will usually only increase the signal strength but not the internet speed so always plug in a cable to the extender device.
