[Q] Who is rooted and tethering with a mac via USB?

Title says it all folks. Who here is using an Epic, rooted and tethering just fine via USB? Only one catch....without using PDAnet or other third party apps. Just the phone.

I have no idea how to do this for the life of me, but why not stick with wifi tether? You can lock the phone or put on access control so only you can access it...

Because these phones heat up quite a bit when running a 4g radio, plugged into a charger, and the wifi radio. I want to tether via usb so that I'm getting power while I tether AND don't have to turn on the wifi radio.
Cut down on heat, increase the life of your battery and phone.
Besides that, it's a feature of the phone that I paid for and I want to be able to use it. Lol.

I've been trying to be nice about my data and pay for tethering through Sprint without rooting and doing wifi tether/usb but I'm finding that this Epic doesn't play nice with Mac and USB and there's a glitch which doesn't allow me to do 4g hotspot AND voice at the same time. Every time I get a voice call, the hotspot drops the 4g connection as if I was using 3g. ONce the call ends, the phone reconnects to 4g and continues on. I've brought both of these up to Sprint with no resolution as of yet.

is there any advantage using usb vs wifi? besides what you mentioned, but speed wise. is one faster than the other? or are they pretty much the same. i tether alot with wifi and i usually have my phone plugged into the wall charger whenever i do and notice it can get kinda hot sometimes. if there is no speed diff id prob go wired also

Speed is the same with 3g as for 4g I have no idea its not in my area :-(
Zulu have u tryed the wired tether app I linked to with a Mac? I'm going to have to test it on my friends macbook. I'm at my girls right now and the only pcs arond are both runing win7 32

I'm running SRF 1.2 w/Genocide 1.1. Earlier tonight, using qbking's excellent video, I used the Spring Hotspot hack. Everything worked perfectly and I can now wirelessly tether my Epic to my PowerBook G4. However, trying to do a wired tether is another story. Although my network preferences lists the Samsung SPH-D700, clicking "connect" doesn't seem to work. What happens is that it'll saying "connecting" for a few seconds, and then I'll get a pop-up reading: "Internet Connect A Modem error occurred. Please verify your settings and try again." Is there a proper way to configure the network preferences for this modem so that I can wire tether my Mac laptop to my Epic?

[REQ] USB reverse tethering

Does anyone else not wish that we could get internet on our phones from a computer? It baffles me how no one seems to think that being able to siphon an internet connection from ANY available computer with a wired internet connection is a good idea.
Cant you guys see how useful that would be when a free and good wifi network isn't available?
1. Imagine youre travelling overseas and dont want to pay exorbitant charges for data roaming.
2. Youre in a place with no wifi and you are unwilling/unable to download loads of data over 3g.
3. Or you simply have an unreliable 3g connection.
Come on, this seems as essential to me as regular tethering. Its a feature available on dinosaur winmo phones and lesser htc phones( called internet passthrough). Why is it not on this phone which is so much superior in so many respects?
Please, if you feel the same way or agree with me, show some support here so we can catch the attention of some devs who can actually do something about this.

Yeah i know of connectify, but you need to install it on your OWN computer thats running WINDOWS. I would like to 'steal' an internet connection from ANY computer(where i dont have permission to go installing software on).
Omission of this feature by samsung is a massive fail.

Thanks for the links. Well thats a shame, I was hoping to garner some interest.
Excuse my obvious ignorance, but if our phones already have ability to supply internet to computers via a usb cable, how difficult could it be for the reverse?

So to clarify, you'd like to be able to plug your phone into a computer and have the computer automagically be able to supply an internet connection to the phone, without installing any additional software?
And you feel this is a feature which Samsung omitted?
That's simply not going to happen. HTC do it via software, HTC Sync, which must be installed on the PC. Hacky methods also exist to be able to make internet pass-through work on Linux.
But to expect a feature to work by simply plugging a USB cable into any computer without software installed is pretty absurd. If this is important to you, I'd suggest you lobby the operating system vendors.

Can I make tablet an AP?

I want to make my tablet a Wi-Fi hotspot so I can share files by connecting my phone to the tablet Wi-Fi ap, and start a ftp server.
Can it be done? I tried foxfi but it crashed when I tried to enable AP.
I can use my phones tether option, but when I do my ftp app says "please connect to a network"

To clarify, I want to share ftp from my phone, connected to host AP on my nexus 10, and access on my nexus 10. I have been able to connect my laptop and tablet to my phone AP, and successfully shared files (apache2 http server) from my laptop to tablet, but this requires my laptop to be constantly on, also my phone.

Im confused what you are trying to accomplish. If you host the FTP on your phone, and want to connect the Nexus 10 to the FTP to share files, then all you do is on your phone turn on wifi tether, and connect to the wireless network the phone creates from your N10. I dont think it is possible to make a tablet an access point that doesnt have a cell service internet connection. In order for the Nexus 10 to be an "access point" it would actually be just a repeater from your routers (or phones, or whatever) internet connection. But you already have that on your phone and by making your phone the hotspot you just connect your tablet to the phone like it was connecting to any normal wireless network.

No, I just want my Nexus 10 to be able to HOST [read: have IP 192.168.43.1], to be able to connect my phone to it [192.168.43.105], so that my FTP app will see I really am connected to wifi.
In tether mode, phone has 192.168.43.1, however the app doesn't recognize it as being connected since it's in tether, and not regularly connected to wifi, and will not start because it says Please connect to a network.
This is why I would like my Nexus 10 to host an infrastructure network.

This is because it configured your wifi radio for a different mode that allows others to connect. I dont think it is possible to have the same radio be configured in two separate ways at the same time.
WHy not just do what the majority of people do and get a dropbox for free and host the files there. Your tablet and phone will both be able to access it.

Look, you have no clue what you're talking about.
I know what I intend to do will work IF I could get my tablet to make a network in infrastructure mode. I do not want to hear about "better ways" to do it, you have no clue what my situation is.
You are really wrong on a lot of points [you do not need an actual data connection/plan to start a tether network, on pretty much any phone that supports it], you really don't know, I understand, but please stop saying "it can't be done," or just stop replying. Also I cannot just use dropbox because it would take a zillion years to upload 4GB movies. And when I'm traveling [like now] I do not always have wifi.

I think I am picking up what you are laying down.
You want to start a wireless network between your N10 and your phone without using a wireless router or access point device.
If you were trying this back in the old days you would simply use a ethernet cross over cable between two ethernet cards and set them to have the same subnet.
Can't say that I know how to do this though with wireless networking.

This is the type of thing Wifi Direct is supposed to be for. The Nexus 10 supports that, it's under the menu in wireless settings. Not sure if your phone does, of course.
Also, depending on AP settings, two devices (clients) on the same wireless network can communicate with each other. It's relayed through the AP, so it will be somewhat slower.

You are being a **** man.. and I uploaded borderlands 2 in less than 3 hours to my drop box.. you don't need data tho, but you may need a cellular radio. Why not use a PC or a USB otg cable and connect the 2? Do it all the time with my N7 and HTC vivid

Still not clear as to what the problem is. Since both on 192.168 non-routable networks presumably they are sitting next to one another. Then who cares which device is the AP? One should be able to run ftp server and the other ftp client. Since he doesn't need data then it seems ftp is just to access one device from the over - no true tether for external data.

Here's what I did and it works to share files between phone and tablet without PC using ftp. Both devices running ES File Explorer. Droid Charge phone hotspot started - has IP address 192.168.43.1. Turn on ftp server within es file explorer on phone. Connect to phone from tablet over WiFi. Phone assigns tablet IP address - in this case 192.168.43.131. On the tablet open es file explorer and define the ftp server that is running on the phone. Once done perform the ftp connection from the tablet to the phone. You can then ftp between the two for as much as you want.
I am paying for phone tethering app on phone. The apps I see in the market seem to identify issues with JB or seem just too old to depend on. Regardless, if you just want to ftp between the two you do not need tethering. You need an app that will act as a hotspot managing devices, security and IP addresses. Another option is a cheap portable access point. Again, you keep focusing on ftp - not the internet. The ap creates a WiFi network that your phone and tablet can connect to - no different than a crossover cable between two wired Ethernet devices. As long as the both are on the same network you are good to go.
BTW - you may think you've perfectly explained what you are looking for answers to. You have not so you should not be too surprised at some of the answers.

I think I explained my FTP doesn't honor tether mode, it technically can access wlan0 to get ip to bind, just the dev didn't allow it.

When I tether my tablet to my phone (haven't tried other way around), it see's its WiFi as a normal WiFi, not as a mobile hotspot or anything. There's different device profiles to choose from, and I think a choice for either ad-hoc or infrastructure; and it's free

Instantly stream from phone to tablet? If that is all you need then the tablet does not need to function as AP - the phone can do it. All you need is the two units on the same network.

That's the problem, my main router only gets about 150KB/s when I stream it both connected to that. I need a router in my room, and my phone has a tether mode that acts as a router [192.168.43.1, gives DHCP IPs, etc]. The only thing, the program I used ["FTP server"] doesn't recognize I have a 192.168 IP, because it sees the regular wifi is off [and tethering is on, which I solely use as a router, not internet].
I will look into the other file manager mentioned, it sounds like it might be able to do what I'm looking for. thanks

If all you want to do is stream movies and music, try searching Play store for a DLNA Media Server. A quick search on Google turned up many. You should be able to forget about what wireless router, IP, etc, - your phone/tablet should show up to the network as a DLNA Media Server.
The other solution with ES File Explorer will indeed work as a file access component. I use it at home to access movies on my home network.

Use android as usb wifi dongle/5GHz ability

Is there a way to use android for the wifi capabilities such as a dongle? Basically my laptop only sees 2.4GHz and I could buy a dual band dongle or upgrade the network card, but my note 5 is rooted, has 2.4/5/AC capability and a usb even lol so Id think itd be possible to plug phone into pc and have pc recognize it as a wifi adapter which would allow me to analyze the network with all the capability of the phone. I can nly find results of tethering which the pc recognizes as a ethernet connection which wont enable being able to see the wifi ssids that the phone can.

Theoretically, yes.
You would need an application on your phone and one on the laptop.
The application would take over your laptop's wifi control and hand it over to the app on the phone.
Afaik, this pair oft apps does not exist.
And I think it's not worth writing them.

I figured but really, everybody has a phone if this was an option even for 5-10$ it would be a better one then having to go out or get on amazon, read reviews and purchase a dongle that may or may not satisfy. If it was able to be done on a phone more then likely there is one with anybody that gets on a pc/laptop and if it was as easy as plugging it in to use it as a wifi dongle, not tether but an actual wifi adapter itd be like the next great thing, not like that bluetooth tethering they tried but like the end to usb wifi dongles I think anyways. Besides with all the ridiculous apps that do cost money on the play store i think somethin like this would be in the top most purchased. plus idk how the licensing works but with it actually being a internet connecting app it would be hard to crack the apk as it would be required to have full contact with whatever servers authenticate the purchase. I would think anybody that worked with networking would have it as a must have for work as its one less thing to carry and should be somewhat simple plug and go plus the countless people who are someday buying a dongle there would be no need to. Nah, there'd be like 0 to 4 people on the planet who'd actually pay for that feature.
Cause from pro to noob, 99.99999% are fine with regular USB tethering or BT Tethering! If they have to change the wifo network, they don't need to change the Wifi network using the mouse. They just grab their phone. It can't be far, it's connected to the laptop, just follow the cable
Anyway, most people don't even know they can do something else with their phone besides Whatsapp, Facebook, Snapchat, taking pictures and dropping it cracking the screen
Already heard of a thing called routing tables? Just because something is connected to the internet doesn't mean it will reach a certain server. How do you think your Adblock works? Exactly like that
People who work with networking use ethernet cables. They have Ethernet plugs all over their workspace. They often don't usw wifi at all at work.
If you still think it's ka and ching, then go ahead, learning to program is always a good idea!

Lol will I know for a fact itd be like, whoever made that app now has some change in their pocket and it goes jang a lang a lang. I unfortunately do not know the programming knowhows, though think I could learn it if I put myself to it, by looking at how some of them are written it looks pretty straight forward once you got the jist of it down, I just dont got that and it kind of overwhelms me trying to figure it out without any knowledge of it. But, you are right, at least without maybe google play promoting it or some type of advertising that would show it as being in place of a usb dongle it would probably get buried by the countless apps made each day which btw all are not great (some are ridiculous) yet they are there.​ I am sure root would be needed for an app like that, which would detract from the audience as well. but the need for usb dongles is nowhere near a thing of the past, in fact I'd say it will only become more of a thing to have especially for the ones that would rather get it instead of buying a entire new system. With technology today and the transition from wired to wireless it would be the last option for anybody that doesnt have wireless before they have to update a whole system so more then likely they will opt for the 20$ dongle. Cause from pro to noob, 99.99999% are fine with regular USB tethering or BT Tethering! If they have to change the wifo network, they don't need to change the Wifi network using the mouse. They just grab their phone. It can't be far, it's connected to the laptop, just follow the cable
Anyway, most people don't even know they can do something else with their phone besides Whatsapp, Facebook, Snapchat, taking pictures and dropping it cracking the screen
Already heard of a thing called routing tables? Just because something is connected to the internet doesn't mean it will reach a certain server. How do you think your Adblock works? Exactly like that
People who work with networking use ethernet cables. They have Ethernet plugs all over their workspace. They often don't usw wifi at all at work.

Lol will I know for a fact itd be like, whoever made that app now has some change in their pocket and it goes jang a lang a lang. I unfortunately do not know the programming knowhows, though think I could learn it if I put myself to it, by looking at how some of them are written it looks pretty straight forward once you got the jist of it down, I just dont got that and it kind of overwhelms me trying to figure it out without any knowledge of it. But, you are right, at least without maybe google play promoting it or some type of advertising that would show it as being in place of a usb dongle it would probably get buried by the countless apps made each day which btw all are not great (some are ridiculous) yet they are there.
I am sure root would be needed for an app like that, which would detract from the audience as well. but the need for usb dongles is nowhere near a thing of the past, in fact I'd say it will only become more of a thing to have especially for the ones that would rather get it instead of buying a entire new system. With technology today and the transition from wired to wireless it would be the last option for anybody that doesnt have wireless before they have to update a whole system so more then likely they will opt for the 20$ dongle. I do consider myself one of a kind and like harry potter special (joking) but if I really am the only person to have tried doing a wifi heatmap on a laptop that only had 2.4 ghz capabilities then either i am broker then everybody else or I am just not from this earth.
With all of the things you are able to do with a phone, use it as a bootable usb to boot a system (drivedroid), foxfi tether, wbnr wifi hack) youd think with a few changes of the programming or combination of the 3 this would be something easily done. I take it your familiar with programming? It seems you are and thats in a compliment kind of way, none of this is in a disrespect or disagreement with you at all, i just am uninformed in the category, but how long approximately does it take to say program an app that would be like a screen mirror app or even simple notepad app? These days if given the choice of buying a 20$ vs anything above and both have the same end result the 20$ is going to fly off the shelf. Of course these arent hot cakes but in any given situation when paying for less is an option and getting the same thing is the result i mean it is hard to think it wouldnt become popular. Drivedroid lets you use phone as bootable usb, i have countless usbs but it is just so much more convenient using my phone as its usally in my pocket already and convenience is what takes the cake.

1. Almost any phone uses USB 2.0
2. Phone's USB Speed is limited due to the USB speed not being the manufacturer's priority (Ever been annoyed about the slow transfer speed of files to your PC?)
3. 2.4 GHz Wifi already gives you 54 to 160Bit/s.
That's a speed, you'll NEVER get through your USB connection.
Be really happy if you get 40 MBit/s...
4. There are... like no wifi routers which support 5GHz only.
5. There are no Laptops without any wifi except in a museum or in the big spare parts box in my garage.
Who'll buy it?
1. People who don't have wifi in their notebook?
No, they sit in a museum or they just use regular USB tethering.

Well after that post it all kind of makes sense to me now. You either are not that informed about 2.4/5ghz radios, you live somewhere that it is not popular... yet. Not sure if you understand what heat mapper is referring to, its only the signal that matters not the speed but if speed was an issue you kept up on any tech news lately or hear of somethin called usb c? 10Gbps. 2.0 gets 480Mbps or 60MBps which would be plenty and would undoubtedly be better then usb tethering as it would have direct and complete use of the wifi connection.
So almost any phone USED to use usb 2.0, like almost any computer USED to dial up to connect, wondering if you might still be, (jk). Just like it always has and will tech changes and soon they will MOSTLY have usb-c or 3.1 and speed is out the window. And finally, r u familiar with play store and its contents? They have some quirky things that become instant hits (flappy) or this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque that you connect the phone to the cars diagnostic connection obd and has 1 million users at 4.95$ each. With your thinking all if those people would never have got that app and would use the normal regular mechanic tool to read odb errors.

Which is ok, i was wondering cuz yes i am too cheap/college student to get a pc just for that 5ghz. I needed it to completely do my heatmap as the router is 2.4/5 simultaneously (prepare for that, most of them are these days wont even mention ac) but only seen 2.4. Also the internet provider gives you the speed not the 2.4 or the 5. And more importantly the ability to see the 2.4/5 channels is what i was needing which in a setup if you have alot of people connected to wifi by splitting it with some on 2.4 and some on 5 you would have better connectivity vs everyone on the same one. If somebody wants speed and speed alone a dongle, wifi or bluetooth wont even be on their mind , they will be hooking it directly with ethernet as thats the fastest and best option there is.

Also look in this network forum like 4 down it says usb reverse tethering and has like 600,000 views. Read that description and see if you still think this would be useless. With your logic ud have to wonder y they even have a phone in the first place. But its obviously popular. Mind/openit

Essential PH1 hot spot not connecting to mobile data

Hi, I'm starting this thread having searched for solutions in other threads and not having found it.
As background, I'm running Pie 9.0 with the August patch update. I got the phone in March and when I saw the pop-up for the update, I installed it, without doing any background checks (not my usual MO) - which is not to say my hot spot was working and then stopped, I just hadn't used it before then. My previous cell was the trusty Samsung S3 in its various flavours - mainly for the small form factor and frankly it was enough phone for me.
Anyway it seems that the PH1 "hot spot" works fine as a *repeater* when I'm connected to wifi but as soon as I turn off my wifi or am out of reach of a wifi and want my hot spot to connect to my mobile data, there's no internet connection to any device connected to my hot spot, even though both my PH1 and the device(s) show as "connected" to each other. internet on my PH1 works just fine in these instances.
What's the secret handshake to make this work?

I don't have any trouble on TMO, but two thoughts for you.
Try adding "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" to the build.prop file. You need root for this.
Maybe lengthen the TTL (time to live) on the connecting device. Google for your device/OS how to do this.

Hmm... so root my phone...
Haven't rooted anything yet... so this is new territory for me.
Don't think it's the TTL, since it's the same with *any* device connected to my phone...

Mine doesn't work when bluetooth is turned on, for some reason. You could try turning BT off, and see if that helps

Well, I turned bluetooth off and when I try to connect to google.com with Chrome, my iPad says "This site can't be reached". When I switch to another wifi source, Goolge is found!
So... what's the culprit in my PH1??

Do you have tethering support on your cell plan?
It is of course always possible some other app is interfering. VPN, ad blocker, ect. But honestly, in all likelihood you need to bypass the tethering check as I described earlier.
If that step doesn't work by itself, in a terminal app with a root prompt enter the command:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0

Thanks ktmom, I guess I'm surprised that yours (and others'?) work without this mod and I'm needing to root mine? I have no other apps such as the ones you mention on my phone so I'm really confused why this simple connection isn't working on my phone.
