Hey,
I want to test it out, just to make sure I don't brick my device: when backing up boot partition via cwm / twrp does that also include the kernel inside?

cwm backup does include kernel too inside boot.img
but if you still want flashable boot.img
take backup using recovery and send me boot.img
i'll provide you flashable boot.img
make sure you are running lollipop
Can't seem to flash it.
Tried both on Odin 3.07 and 3.09.
It gets to the part "Nand write starting" and just doesn't do anything.
The device boots up normally after removing battery with old kernel.

As I said, it won't flash through Download mode (Odin is stuck on Start Nand wite).
Here is the boot.img from XtreStoLite ROM (its the original g900h kernel).

you dont flash the boot.img via odin
you flash tar files via odin (which contain the boot.img) but it has to be an odin flashable tar file
if you only have the boot.img file you can flash it via cwm with the boot image installer zip file
All instructions on how to flash each kernel will be on the op of each kernel thread

Hi
Is there a way to get a stock kernel somewhere, in the purpose of flashing it either with CWM or in Odin? Everywhere I look, the Stock Rom packages contain the kernel, but also contain system image and recovery. I need only the kernel from this to flash, is there any way to get the kernel from each of this packages, so that I can flash it alone?

open the stock firmware with 7zip and copy the boot image to desktop
Thank you for taking the time.
So "boot.img" is kernel image?
If so, then once I extract the boot.img, how do I flash it using odin?

yes boot.img is the kernel.
you can use a special tool to make it a tar file like this
if you want. attach the boot.img here in a zip and i will make it for you
Thanks samersh72. I should probably learn that myself, you did enough for me already. I should be able to take it from here. Thanks again.

Well i kind of know the rules of XDA.
But here's the catch, i have tried that method mentioned above.
Downloaded the .tar file and flashed via Odin. And now my phone is stuck on Samsung logo forever.
That's why posted here.

Hey
You are only flashing a kernel...not a full 4.4.2 original image.
And that's why you're stock on the boot logo.

As mentioned you are flasing only kernel, i use odin 1.85
stock 5.0.1 roms mega mirrors http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...06-lolipop-official-samsung-firmware-t3023794 thanks to @Mar10
and tar files from 4.4.2 open nordic countries thanks to @DeHAWK
XXUCNJ11 https://mega.co.nz/#!cNE3nDSB!zjPWcM7OI-ltonzAuMKDdREinHr6ilm-ZBg0oqxD2k8
XXUCNI1 https://mega.co.nz/#!1EtAWTQB!zHVAwXe3odz6ipvhZmpdSXUnTKy1w_oYRpRlRMRa6DQ
take the battery out wait 5-10 secs and enter to download mode to avoid modem issues.
its not recomendable but if you have a backup of a pit file for your phone select it and thick re-partition, this is dangerous but may help with bootloop only if flashing the firmware with no repartition work, repartition with out a pit file may brick your device.

One more noob question..
I did a back up of my touchwiz before converting to CM.
And i got the back up file as normal file folder instead a zip file.
I wonder if there is a way to restore it.
I already tried zipping it and restoring from philz recovery...but it says bad file.

you´re welcome.
did you do the backup from philz recovery? i never did a backup from recovery, only with titanium, so i really dont know, but to restore a backup needs to be done from the same source that the backup was created. for the screen shots looks like a CWM recovery backup good luck.

Sorry to bother you again.
But i am facing a new kinda problem now with custom recoveries.
After flashing NEE-I9506XXUCNJ1-20141114075501 yesterday it got auto updated to 5.0.1 lollipop .
Now i am stuck with stock recovery.
Tried to flash philz 6.x.x.x as before with odin. The odin process completes itself and reboots the phone.
But when i try to get into recovery still its booting in stock recovery.
Any solution on how can i flash custom recovery on this ?
Additional info
Baseband version : I9506XXUDOA6
bUILD NUMBER : LRX22C. I9506XXUDOA6
Flash your Favorite Custom Recovery with Odin 3.xx and put it to AP. Check that Auto Reboot isn't marked. After successful flashing your Phone won't to reboot. USB Cable out and put your Battery out and wait few seconds. Put your Battery in and reboot it to Recovery. The Stock Recovery can't now overwrite the Custom Recovery.

in lollipop i used TWRP recovery (TWRP_2.8.4.0_ks01lte_20150207.tar.md5)https://www.mediafire.com/folder/p3rwwfm7xn76x/TWRP flashed with odin 1.85 no problems.
but after rooting with cf autoroot http://download.chainfire.eu/502/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-ks01lte-ks01ltexx-gti9506.zip( extract and flash with odin in pda) because cf autorrot flash stock recovery after rooting.
Important after rooting flash immediately custom recovery, if you boot in stock recovery after root all apps will force close and you will need to wipe data (stock recovery wipe data will delete internal memory as well), so do not boot in stock recovery.

Never tried with samsung phones (and probably it is not possible) but with my other android devices I just extract the boot.img from the ROM and flash it with fastboot using the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img".
With a samsung device you should probably (or definitely) create a flashable .zip file with the boot.img of your stock ROM and flash it via recovery.
You need to download your original kernel from net, there are 2 types of file you’ll find, one is .zip and another one is .tar. If you download .zip file you have to flash it with recovery (CWM/TWRP) or if you download .tar file (don't try to make your own .tar file) then you can flash it with Odin tool.
Hi Guys,
I have compiled a kernel for note 4 from opensource samsung.
I have got zimage in two locations , one in output which is less than 10mb and one in main kernel boot folder which is 20 mb.
When i try to flash using odin i , get the error , unsupported dev type.
I have firmware N910GDTS1DRH2 N910GODD1DRD1 downloaded from sammobile.
Also after compiling i have got some modules which i didnot touch.
I downloaded source from http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=n910g
I have tried 3 mm versions, but all give same error.
Any help will be appreciated.
I also tried making boot.img with perl script but phone doesnot boot up using that.
Thanks and Regards,
Ankit
I use AIK to unpack the stock boot image. Take the zImage from output/arch/arm/boot/ and replace the original one in the new split_img folder that AIK creates. Be sure to rename it what AIK names it (boot.img-zImage if I remember right). Then repack it flash the new image via TWRP. The new-image should be close to 15.8 mb.
Edit- forgot to hit reply button @xdauserherewithnote4
Is TWRP neccessary

Yeah, you could make it in to .tar if you'd like but it needs to be in a boot.img form. The only way I know how to directly flash a zImage is with anykernel or a tool similar to that.
Kernel flash was success but phone is not stable now !

Ok i was able to flash boot.img by converting into tar (having new zimage) , but system is rebooting again and again after sometime.
I was able to flash after making boot.img using AIK. Thanks for advice.
