The steps:
Go to Dialer and enter ##DATA# (##3282#)
Press "view" then enter APN Settings
For both "APN2 EHRPD internet" and "APN2 LTE internet" change APN Type from "default,mms" to "default,mms,dun"
After you enter the change, hit Menu -> Save before going to the next APN.
And that's it. That easy. It works for both Hotspot and USB tethering. Seems too easy, but that's all I had to do. work wifi and bluetooth

That's very interesting because all the other Samsung phones need the MSL number to get into that menu...the Note 4, the S6...guess you are lucky.

You are a life saver, I soft bricked my phone last night, had no back up, and found the Official Lollipop 5.0. I just needed my hotspot back with out rooting again and this works perfectly so far!
You need MSL code to add dun to apn settings
AFAIK, getting to the Edit screen of the ##DATA## settings triggers the MSL code dialog. emanuelrv is saying to click "View." When I do that on Sprint Galaxy S5, the settings are greyed out. You can't change.
If you call Sprint and tell the support person you need the MSL code because you are thinking of switching phones and using that one on another carrier. (There are other reasons you would need the MSL, but this is one likely safe one.) If the first support person gives you a problem, say "Thanks anyways," call back and try another rep.
Once you get MSL code, choose "Edit" and do as original post said. Add "dun"

Sprint Galaxy S5 Marshmallow 6.0.1 update 4/4/16
I received the Marshmallow 6.0.1 update OTA from Sprint about 3 hours ago. I used the same codes to access the Hotspot section. Access was granted, but the APN TYPE was greyed out. I couldn't activate the Hotspot function. Is there a fix or different process for Marshmallow?
Thanks!
if you update the samsung app called good lock in the galaxy app store, hotspot feature works again.

I tried updating the good lock app and the settings are still grayed out. Any other thoughts on this? I think it must have to do with prl/ profile updates after marshmallow. For the people it works for on marshmallow, did you have the apn settings modified before you updated? I'm wondering if they will stick if I go back to OK4 and then update again. Thanks.

For anyone that has/had troubles like me with the grayed out apn settings I found that wifi tether router by Fabio Grasso worked for me. I used the settings for s5/s6 and lollipop on his site and it works perfectly. Note you will need root for this. Hope this helps someone.

Hi All,
This guide is intended to help those of you suffering from data connection issues while using GPS. For example, when GPS is enabled and Google Maps is launched the network connection disconnects from 3G/HSPA and the network connection icon turns grey. Anyways, give this a shot and see if it helps. I have tested it out on my Nexus One using AT&T and it has fixed the issue for me. Also, you don't need to worry about screwing up your phone following this process as you can simply reset the APNs to default without issue :good:
Navigate to APN Settings
Navigate to System Settings > More (under Wireless & Networks) > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names. You should see something similar to this screenshot. If you have previously altered your APNs you should select the "Reset to default" option (this can take a while to complete so be patient!)

Remove unneeded APNs
You only need one APN listed. Since the N1 doesn't have LTE and I don't have StraightTalk I can remove these APNs. Simply click on each of the APNs to be remove and select the "Delete APN" option
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
Configure your APN
Select the remaining APN and scroll down to "APN type". You need to change this value from whatever it is currently (in my case it reads "default,supl,mms") to "default,mms" (without quotes!). Select the "Save" option, back out of the settings menu and power off yor phone. DO NOT RESTART, YOU MUST POWER OFF your phone or this might not work! Don't worry if your connection icon turns grey (as shown in the screenshot) as this will be blue after you power on.
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
Test it out
Navigate to System Settings > Location Access. If prompted about "Location consent" click "Agree". Wait a few seconds and then launch Google Maps. Confirm that the data connection is not lost by watching the network connection icon. If the icon remains blue with the letter "H" or "E" next to it then you're good! If it didn't work or made things worse you can simply select the "Reset to default" option from the APN Settings (again, this can take a while to complete so be patient!)

[UPDATE2]
darkshino has pointed out this may break mms. I have update the guide to set the APN type ase "default,mms" as this seems to fix mms and doesn't break GPS/Maps. Also found that powering off rather that rebooting is better (rebooting didn't work when I tried).

It is very likely you were the origin of this; in which case I thank you! I will update the OP to give credit where it is due. I hope you understand I'm not trying to take credit for your contribution, I'm just trying to help out others. Also, I was unable to get GPS working by setting the APN to "default" alone. I had to remove the extra APNs to get GPS working (which is not mentioned in your post).
In fairness, I got the idea to remove the extra APNs from a post I came across in the texasice development thread. I can't remember who initially suggested it so if anyone else out there thinks it may have been their suggestion please let me know and I will gladly give credit where credit is due.
No worries. Its a nice guide :highfive:
Updated the guide to include a fix for mms. Thanks to darkshino for bringing this to my attention.
Hi all,
I installed the 5.1OTA and could not get Verizon Enhanced LTE (advanced calling, VoLTE, etc....) to work. I tried what everyone else suggested and nothing made it work (never showed the enhanced LTE setting in the cellular menu). Here are the steps I took in case anyone else is having the same problem.
1. Re-Install radio and bootloader from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934540313
2. Enter the hidden menu using *#*#4636#*#*
3. Go in to Phone information
4. Click the TURN ON VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG button (wont change)
5. Click the TURN OFF RADIO button
6. Wait a few seconds (for radio to turn off) and then click the TURN ON RADIO button.
7. Observe that the TURN ON VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG button has changed to TURN OFF....
8. Go in to Settings>>...More>>Cellular Networks and make sure that Enhanced 4G LTE Mode is enabled.
I did all this and I still did not have data while making a call. I had to go to VZW site and go into my account and tell it to activate a device on my current line. I entered the IMEI and it gave me a warning about softcard and then went right back to same screen, When I clicked next it gave me a warning that it was unsupoorted device. After this it all worked perfect although the phone is still not recognized on the VZW site.
I can confirm this works. I had the hd voice already added to my line so I had to remove it and then add it back. That seemed to do the trick for me. It hasn't disappeared as it did originally. I'll update if I lose it. Thanks OP
I installed the OTA too and I didn't see the VOLTE switch immediately either.
What I had to do was to log into Verizon and add HD voice to the lines that supported it. After I added them and checked the mobile network settings, I saw the VOLTE switch pop up.
Hope that helps.

o its under free products.. i see it now.. thanks guys.
I added the service to my line then rebooted the phone but still no sign of the setting. Maybe I should have been more patient.
No matter, this solution worked perfectly. thanks
Same here played around in dialer and no go
So..... My problem is that when I enter the settings menu inside of the dialer by dialing *#*#4636#*#* it does show the option to turn on volte provisioned flag but it does not change. Ever. I hit the button, turn off radio, let it turn all the way off, then turn it on, and it still doesnt change. Reboot, still no advanced calling options.
Anyone else having this problem?
I am on Chroma ROM so I'm hoping this isn't an issue, and if it is, does anyone recommend a good stock rom until Chroma gets updated?
Thanks guys!!!
Same problem here. I was using Vanillipop and it worked on that one but not on Chroma
I tried this and got the feature and all on my phone but tried to make a call and got an error then it turned off the features and back to square one.
I did the following and it worked. I had to turn on HD Voice in my verizon account. I did not have to activate my nexus 6 on my line.
type in *#*#4636#*#*. When you hit that last *, your phone will jump into the hidden settings menu. Choose “Phone info” and then scroll down until you see an option for “TURN ON VOLTE PROVISIONED FLAG.” Tap that and then reboot your phone (I had to reboot twice for some reason to get it to work). Once booted, head into your phone’s regular settings menu, tap on “More” under “Wireless & networks,” then “Cellular networks.” You should now see an option for “Enhanced 4G LTE Mode” and it should be toggled on.
Edit: There is a chance that you may need HD Voice added to your Verizon account. To do that, you will need to sign-in to your Verizon account and add the feature, which is free. http://goo.gl/eKFV5E

I meant the fix.....the provisioning thing. Does that only work on VZ?
Just bought a Pure Edition from Amazon, before I even installed my Sprint sim card. I have noticed that under cellular networks, APN is nowhere to be found.
I was not sure if my phone was defective or that was a normal thing. The phone is stock, I even did a factory reset to make sure.
If anyone can chime I that would be great!
Basically, trying to access the APN settings so I can add tethering on my phone. Unless there is another way without root.

Again it's unlocked phone, not sure if that helps..
The APN settings are hidden, I presume, but have no clue where to start.
All I would like to do is to activate my native tethering. But non rooted, tho..

Root won't help... Even most custom ROMs honor the SIM's settings.
Have you contacted your carrier to have them re-send the activation signal? That is needed on some carriers.

It took them like 1 he to completely activate the Moto X..

This way I can access the APN. Maybe disable Band 26 or 41 to get to the APN settings...

APN doesn't control bands. They need to activate it and send the configuration message. Just the way Sprint works. @MotoJunkie01 might have some insight here.
I might root and use SQL editor to access the APN settings under telephony..
But rooting will kill my battery, right

Why would rooting kill your battery? It should have no effect on battery life by itself.
Maybe we are looking at this the wrong way, what is the problem you are having that you think you need to access APN settings to correct?

I assume you have ruled out it being your current SIM card causing all your issues by trying a different one?
Also, if you are now rooted, there are ways to bypass the carrier hotspot provisioning check without messing with your APN. Although I could be wrong, this generally isn't an issue with the MXP.

Root itself has ZERO effect on battery life, what you do with that access might though.
There is no APN option to enable "free" hotspot, the best you can do is add a line to build.prop "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" which causes the phone to not verify if the carrier has tethering provisioned or not.
APN type dun will not do anything for you in a modern smartphone.
APN Type: dun - Indicates the current APN configuration may be used for Dial-Up Networking connections. This refers to an outdated method for using your phone to emulate a dial-up modem and is not the way that modern smartphones do tethering anymore. There should be no need to use this value.

Hello everyone, I'm new to posting on this forum (even though I have lurked for quite awhile). I've been having all sorts of trouble finding the proper Boost Mobile APN settings and I have finally figured it out and it works flawlessly on a few roms that I have tried. Hopefully these will help anyone having trouble finding Sprint roms that work on Boost Mobile networks. This will be especially helpful for anyone running a custom rom that doesn't support the "Update PRL" stock setting.
First step is to go into settings and find your Access Point Names section. Finding this section can be different for certain roms but is usually under Connections or Mobile Data. Of course, the easiest way I've found is to simple use the settings search bar for "Access Point Names."
Once you're at the Access Point Names settings, click the "Add" button on the top right corner. Edit your blank APN to make it exactly like this:
After you have copied my APN settings, click the menu button on the top right corner and hit "Save." Make sure you have checked the circle/box next to your newly created APN setting. After a second or two, you should notice that your mobile data is fully functional. So you'll see either 4G or LTE logo (depending how your rom displays it).
"But what if I only see 3G? - If that is the case you need to go back to settings and search for "Network mode" and it'll take you to this menu. Make sure your preferred network mode is listed as "LTE/CDMA." After you change it, it will ask you to reboot the device. Once your device is restarted, you should now have working 4G/LTE! Even if your 4G/LTE is working after saving the new APN settings, I would still recommend changing the preferred network mode to "LTE/CDMA."
Hope this helps someone out there
I have also tried these same settings on my Galaxy S5 (SM-G900P). Although I cannot guarantee, I am sure these settings should work on any phone on the Boost Mobile network. I am currently using [ROM] [ULTIMATE Note 7 Hybrid] [N930PVPU1APGC] [Stock] [v1.0] by tx_dbs_tx on my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910P)
Not working for me
I have an SM-N910P that is successfully activated on Boost Mobile. However, only with 3G internet. I tried your method, to no avail. any other suggestions?

Hello I am having this exact same problem. The pictures above aren't loading. Does anyone have these settings?
Hey guys,
I'm just wondering if this is an issue related to my phone or carrier or if anyone else out there is having the same issue: after I updated my Android to 8.1 Oreo I can't seem to be able to add or edit any APN settings on my phone. This is the first time I am trying to do this on my Essential phone, but I have always been able to change APN settings on other phones that I've had without any problem.
This is what I see when I go to Settings->Network & Internet->Mobile Network->Advanced->Access Point Names:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I can't remember exactly what it used to show on other phones that I've had, but I am pretty sure there used to be a button with a plus sign that allowed to add new entries or edit existing ones, whereas now on this phone I can't.
Does anyone know how to fix it?
You can't. It came up in Essentials last Reddit AMA. Carriers requested that it be locked down, so they introduced it with 8.1.

I changed carriers multiple times recently to try and find one that would work well with this phone. What I experienced was that the APN settings were unlocked on GSM Carriers (AT&T & T-Mobile) but locked on the CDMA ones (Sprint & Verizon). My APN settings were wrong on Total Wireless (Verizon network) and since they were locked the carrier had to send the correct ones to my phone.

Same experience here, with Total Wireless on both an Essential PH-1 and Pixel 2. The workaround is to insert a GSM sim (even without service), add/modify the APN settings that you need, and then reinsert the CDMA sim. It should pick up the APN settings that you configured with the GSM sim.
Hey guys,
Thank you for your replies.
So pretty much the only solution is to root the device?

No, you don't have to. I'm not rooted (never been) and I'm still be able to edit my APN's.
I'm on stock 8.1 with April security update.

The previous post provided an alternate solution if you have access to a GSM SIM.
Just a heads up that the whole GSM SIM bypass thing may not work and may depend on the SIM. I'm on Telus in Canada, which is GSM, and I cannot edit my APN settings.

That sucks. I wonder why carriers want them locked down. It makes troubleshooting harder and the only way to fix them if wrong is to contact your carrier (which already happened to me).
Oreo 8.1 with April Update works on GSM Essential
I just changed my APN Settings today with Essential and Oreo 8.1 for TMobile.
I'm on Sprint and the may update opm1.180104.166 locked mine down
Tried an older T-Mobile SIM which I had to cut down in it. No luck with that changing them. May try a cricket Sim.
Don't see APN settings
Hi Guys,
I've never been able to download MMS messages on my essential (Project Fi). Today I tried to google around and found APN settings so went ahead and added a new APN for tmobile: Settings->Network & Internet->Mobile Network->Advanced->Access Point Names
Now, I just don't see the option for "Access Point Names" anymore
All I see under "Advanced" is "Carrier Video Calling". I've reached out to Essential but wondering if someone here could help (please please don't suggest a factory reset
Just to understand, so if you do root then this wouldn't be a problem?
No. I am on a rooted Pixel 2 with Android 9 and there are no APN settings available.
you are a ****ing lifesaver !! I searched for a couple of days and this worked !!! Thank you so much !!
Here is what I did to edit the APN settings on my Essential Phone. If you search for the MCC and MNC and edit the values appropriately, you should be good to adapt this to another carrier.
