How to disable os update notification without root ? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I downgraded my note 4 to kit kat yesterday, because on this version of os note 4 used to work almost perfect. The main problem is that an update to lolipop has been downloaded automaticly and the notification which ask me to update cellphone appeared on the notification bar. Is IT possible to hide this notification? I do not have a root. Do i have a possibility to delete os update files from memory?

I am in exactly the same situation. I am happy with 4.4.4 and i will wait for 5.1 update. How do i get rid of the notificarion? It managed to trick me and download the update.

If you go into Settings -> About Device -> Software Updates there are check boxes there that you can uncheck to disable the firmware update notification. However I don't understand why you would want to do that as you will make your Note 4 more susceptible to hackers.

Well, a lot of people have experienced that Lollipop is a lot worse than KitKat. Therefore, some (like me) want to keep using KitKat until Samsung comes with a better upgrade. Frankly, I find the OTA functionality annoying in the EXTREME. So if anyone can help shutting it up (until we want to upgrade) without root, it would be much appreciated!!!

Well, if that's what you want just follow the instructions that I posed earlier that will disable the Auto OTA update and Firmware Update Notification.

The box is unchecked but my phone already downloaded the update and it keeps nagging me about installing it. Even if i said i'll install later, every few hours it pops on my screen or find it there when i unlock it.

In that case you will need to find where the update file is and delete it from you Note 4's internal memory.

^Which is not possible without root.

Can any of you tell me where exactly i can find those update files ? I have already done a root, but i dont see them i system files.

[Q] Does rooting my Nexus causes OTA updates to fail?

Hi all,
I've been searching this forum (and the rest of the internet) for this question but there are not really similar answers.
I would like to root my nexus 4 just to be able to change the host file in the system folder. The rest if the phone I would like to remain stock (for now). But since android 4.4 is coming up I was wondering if it is still possible to receive the OTA update after performing this action.
Anyone knows an answer to this question?

edit: I am checking on something for you... you will receive OTA updates but checking to see if host file is one of the files it checks before it upgrades.
More than likely any changes to your system folder will cause it too fail
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417810
In my experience you still receive OTA updates, but you lose root while updating. I'm not sure if the hosts file is changed though.
If you're rooted and you've stock recovery then you'll be able to Upgrade but if you've rooted n installed 3rd party recovery then you'll receive update but it won't install. It will fail.

Are you sure about that? I've been running cwm recovery ever since 4.2.0. Every ota update was received and installed without issues, but I always simply lost root until a new method for the new android release appeared.
You can still receive OTA but I would suggest not accepting it and flash it manually using a "safe" method. The OTA update from 4.2 to 4.3 caused problems on rooted phones. Usually it is fine but 4.3 changed the file system which caused the problem, so better be safe than sorry.

Thank you all for your replies, this tells me again that it is quite difficult to say what happens. Since KitKat is probably coming to the Nexus 4 one of these days I will stay stock for now and decide later if I want to root my phone.
I used superSU Pro, and turned on "survival mode" when I did the OTA update to 4.3, and didn't have any problems losing root. Sometimes I'll get a message say I may have lost root access, but I've never had any problems with apps that require root.

on the last update.. I wasn't getting the OTA until I unrooted. I think you have to unlock the bootloader too.. then I immediately received the OTA. I didn't have stock recovery. I was glad that I didn't have to wipe everything.. I then re-rooted.. was good to go.

[Q] Prevent 4.3 to 4.4 upgrade on UNrooted Note3

Hi everyone,
I am going to purchase a Note 3 the next week (probably Vodafone Australia) and would be interested to know if there is a way to prevent the upgrade from 4.3 JB to 4.4 KK?! More specifically on an unrooted phone...
One of the main reasons is the App permission manager in 4.3 that would allow to restrict apps on an unrooted phone -
and I would prefer to keep it unrooted (The only reason for me to root a phone would be to restrict app permissions, but with 4.3 that seems to be unnecessary, so why risk tripping Knox).
I know one could turn off the notifications for the Google Framework Services,to stop the nagging reminders, but this only would delay the upgrade, not prevent it afaik.
So maybe there is a way using the App permission manager in 4.3 or something else?
Any help is greatly appreciated -
Many thanks in advance :cyclops:
On an uprooted phone...not that I know of. On a rooted phone, it's a piece of cake...just rename one file.

First you must take into account that very latest models might at some point come directly with 4.4.2.
If the phone is on 4.3 as far as I know you need to reject the licence agreement on the updates - when you first start your phone after initial steps it will show a notification on software updates, will make you choose a country and ask to agree to the license - if you say NO you will get no OS upgrade.
If you are also on one of early firmware versions like MI7 (where you can root with URDLV) you also need to disable the security updates.
Hi there -
Thanks a lot for all your answers!
Declining the license terms doesn#t sound too bad - would it have any other disadvantages if one does so?
Cheers,
grovin

Apps to stop

Hello
Got my S5 yesterday and I am not rooted (yet) and Ive been wondering if is it safe to "disable" samsung apps and other applications that I will never use without disabling OTA UPDATES
like in the attachment.
If someone can provide a list which contains wich ones are safe to disable without removing OTA updates option that would be great.
Thanks
Just disable it and it will ask u install latest version after pressing OK results disabled. Its better way to, just like removing bloatware. I always do like that.

Do NOT take OTA update for the very reason you have described. OTA will put you on 4.4.4 which their is no released root for yet. All other ROMS right now are based on the 4.4.2 version that was previously on our devices.
You can NOT installed leaked Lolipop ROM as that is not for our device. We will have to wait for our carriers version or possibly a port.
Once you get your device you should be able to root using Towelroot which is just a simple .apk that you sideload and run. https://towelroot.com/
Then go to this thread and install Safestrap which is the Recovery we use for our device since our bootloader is locked. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610
Follow those instructions and then you should be able to go into the Development section and load up a custom ROM. I also HIGHLY advise you take some time and read thru some threads before diving into this to educate yourself before you break something.

-No that ROM you linked to in the video is NOT for our device. That was for the international version. I believe Poland or something like that.
-Do not know about the Note 4. Would take that question to that forum. But OTA update on regular Note 3 for Verizon WILL remove root and bootloader was never unlocked.

Yes you are good to root with that build. Just make sure not to take any updates.

Root and you can disable this or use a custom rom.
Rooted method:
Download "disable service" from Play Store
Open it
Go to System Apps
Find Google Services Framework and tap it
Uncheck "SystemUpdateService"
Restart your device.

If i were you I'd look at a dev note 3 developers edition that way no locked boot loader and you can rom way more than on regular note 3 if someone posted this my apologies I did not read everyone's post. Thanks

[Q] 5.1.1 Update error

Hey guys, I feel like this has been covered already but I cant seem to find what I'm looking for. My nexus player is still on 5.0 that is shipped with. I rooted it and unlocked the bootloader a while ago and the OTA update is waiting. Whenever I try and install it, it installs about half way and says error and I have to force reboot. Any suggestions on the easiest way to fix this ??
1st you need to provide people here the exact model of your "Nexus Player" in order for us to give you specific detail or link on what you need to do.

Generally system updates will fail on a rooted device.
I am having same problem to update 5.1.1 on my NP. Is there a way to update rooted NP.
