ME: I am a phone idiot, my first cellphone at all was last fall and I don't know anything, so apologies in advance if I say dumb things because everything is new to me including smartphones themself.
THE PHONE: AT&T unlocked Samsung Galaxy S1 i897 Captivate, not currently activated/no SIM if that matters. Trying to insure it works rooted on kit kat without bricking BEFORE getting the phone back into service.
THE ROM: pac_captivatemtd-nightly-20150124
FWIW i tried kingo-root and it didnt work despite supposing to, used something called Odin v1.85 instead. Flashed I897UCKF1-AutoRoot-DesignGears.tar for Odin, and something called CornKernel UCKK4v705.tar for custom recovery.. Then the Pac-man ROM. I'll note with interest it refused to see the SD card on reboots, had to use internal storage. Didn't quite understand what to do with the gapps [which it wont let me link here i see] fwiw other than copying it onto the phone somewhere. All reboots seem to get back to a working install - but then I can't do anymore more with it.
It accepts wifi login stuff for local connection but I cant get it to log into the Google Play store stuff. I get "unable to connect to google servers", the button to connect to the google account doesn't work/you can hit it a hundred times and it does nothing until you skip past it, and comments about google services framework crashing, google play services crashing, google account manager crashing...
How do I start narrowing down where the problem is, is this about Pac Man rom or the GAPPS or something for a samsung captivate-specific subforum?

A few weeks ago I updated my firmware to froyo via Kies, which worked, no data loss, so great.
Today Kies offered the latest firmware, so I agreed. Selected the back up options and continued. A window popped up to say backup failed, but the firmware upgrade continued with no option to stop it. This also failed and left my phone unusable. Kies firmware recovery didn't work either. I got my phone back working with Oden3 and I9000XWJV1 firmware. So now I'm running v2.3.2. Unfortunately because the backup failed I lost all my account details, contacts and apps.
The main reason for upgrading was I wanted to use a SIP account and my friends Nexus running Gingerbread had this option, but my i9000 still does not.
To get the SIP account option, will I need to root the phone and install a custom firmware? Or are there any apps which will let me use my SIP account on the i9000.

I'm not surprised that after 7 hours no one has bothered to reply
1) Kies offers a firmware upgrade recovery option from the pull-down menu - its happened to me...it works
2) Why did you install JV1 via Odin? - its a GB beta release and is notoriously flakey...I can't imagine a worse option. You need to use any of the stable 2.3.3 firmwares, the latest being JVO and available from Samfirmware.com
3) Your account details are pretty easy to enter aren't they? Losing your contacts is dumb....the whole point of this technology is that you sync to your gmail account so you never need to worry about trashing your phone or losing it...just log on to another and away you go.
Sorry to sound harsh mate but your post is just a lesson to anyone else who doesn't follow some common sense rules.
Fortunately you haven't bricked your phone....recommend you do (2) above, then do some reading on here about backing up, how to use your google account properly, not saving contacts on your phone .....and generally getting the most out of your £350 piece of kit
Thanks for the reply. I installed that firmware from a quick Google (I was at work when Kies messed up my phone and very busy). I just popped over to SamFirmware and downloaded the latest firmware (XXJVO), which Odin3 installed without loosing my apps, etc (just a few settings as you would expect). All appears well, for now.
Spent some time Googling last night and I found CSipSimple, which works nicely with my SIP account.
Still Not sure why my contacts where not saved to the google account, it had 5 of them. Also loosing all my apps meant I could take a look at alternatives, which proved fruitful. Contacts now saved to my SD, but can't find a way of backing up my apps unless I root the phone...I think I'll give that a miss.
I have recently gotten a Samsung S4 (i9500). I have done all the rooting and the omega rom installation. The only issue I am having is that all the important apps don't seem to support the phone currently. For example, I tried to download Clockwork Rom (and Manager) from the Play store only to be told that my device is not supported at present. I got the same message when trying Mobile Odin, Triangle Away and a few other applications. Is this because the device is still relatively new or is it something I am doing wrong?
Ok, so first off I rooted my previous phone (a Verizon Motorola Droid X2) without any problems ever. I dropped Verizon as my carrier and switched to Straight Talk and I bought the Samsung Galaxy S4, after a few months of having it I decided to look for a way to root it. After a few days of browsing and reading about I found and root option that worked. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758) This saferoot worked and i had superuser and was able to do everything i wanted to.
I then went on the Google play store and installed apps that I previously had on my old device for rooted phones. Well I installed chainfire3D and opened it up and clicked install the drives (which then requires a reboot) after a sort time I noticed my phone was stuck on the loading screen and I can't get past it.
I then start looking for a unroot/unbrick option in order to restore my phone to default firmware and factory settings to get it to work again.
Now here is the dilemma...
Like it says in the title, the phone model is SGH-S970G and for the life of me I can't find this model's firmware anywhere.
plz help me asap!!!!
Thank you in advance for any useful information to help point me in the right direction or give me a solution!

If you get your phone fixed, I suggest you skip reinstalling Chainfire 3D. It specifically says it's not for Jelly Bean devices.
I've spent a lot of time now trying to fix my phone and i'm really quite worried.
It's a Samsung Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M (CSC I337MOYAAAMDJ, Baseband I337MVLUAMDJ, version 4.2.2).
I have had CM 10 on it running perfectly fine for about a year. I decided to update it though and didn't know that you could update CM right from the phone , so I downloaded the software from their site onto my phone and onto my PC. Followed the instructions installation froze and didn't move forward for over a day .... so I gave up.
I went looking for and downloaded the phone's stock firmware for both my carrier (Virgin Mobile, Canada) and for Bell's, so I installed TWRP with Odin 3.07 without issue. When I install the stock firmware my WiFi will not turn on.
So i've tried installing several rom's putting them on the SD card and using TWRP on my phone and i've found out that if I use Goldeneye and tell it my phone is an I9505, or hyperdrive (I9505) or at the moment Google Play Edition (JFLTE 5.01, kernel = Googy-Max3) that the WiFI DOES TURN ON as soon as the rom is loaded !!! So I thought I was good, but no
When flashed with either it's stock I337M firmware or these custom I9505 rom's my phone will play no audio. Chrome just crashes if I go to play any music or video. If someone call's, the ringer doesn't work but after several 'rings' my phone start's to vibrate indicating they called (aka the dialer lags out and then crashes). I can make calls too but when I talk the recipient can't hear me, nor I them.
It downloaded and re-installed all the app's of my google backup totally fine and using wi-fi. It play's games fine (but with no sound), i can txt fine, etc. It notices and connects to the network (Virgin Mobile) fine (I turned off wifi and tried downloaded stuff, txts go back and forth, and my phone labels Virgin)
I'm on a stupid 2 year contract and this phone cost $650 at the time I got it. It's knox 0x1 so no warranty to have it repaired. Does ANYONE have ANY idea what might be causing my phone not to play any sound's? I've tried pretty much everything I can think of.
I'd be willing to live with a totally cripples phone ... but it's got to at least work for receiving or sending phone calls and this sound issue crashes the dialer and even if I manage to pickup when it's vibrating before the other person has hung up there's no sound, neither of us can hear each other .
Does ANYONE have ANY idea what could be doing this or how to fix it? I'm so depressed and worried right now that I just a phone I spent a lot of money and am on a stupid contract on :/. I fixed the wifi problem by flashing with a rom that 'makes it' a GT-I9505G, baseband I337MUMUAMDL (v 5.0.1) (vs SGH-I337M, baseband I337MVLUAMDJ (v 4.2.2)), but the same sound and audio/media problem exist's no matter what firmware or version the phone ends up being .
I should have just left it with CM as it was but *sigh* here I am, please help.

try with this firmware
lets me see
k thanks i'll try it (once it's slow download is done) and update this post. Looks the same except I guess it's android v5.0.1 (well and it's a different CSC/PDA).
K well i've tried that firmware and it's given me some abnormal problems.
Odin typically just writes in like two minutes and boom done, but when I tried to flash with the firmware you suggested like every 15 seconds it would say ...
"Receive Response from boot -loader"
"Transmission Complete.."
"Now Writing .. Please wait about 2 minutes"
It kept cycling through those 3 messages until it FINALLY finished and it say's PASS but it took 9 min 53 seconds which is like 5 times longer then it's ever taken.
Wheather this is relevant or not i'm not sure just trying to give as much details as I can.
Anyways, after booting the phone the samsung logo came up as usual and usually it takes like 5-10 min sitting at this logo before the phone completes loading, presumably setting up the firmware I imagine.
It's been now sitting at that logo for over 20 minutes and i'm about to try wiping with TWRP the davlic cache/cache/data/internal and either trying again with odin (v3.07) OR
If that contines to not work I might put the tar.md5 on the external SD card and recover a saved backup I have on the SD card (with the stock firmware I had before that doesn't allow Wi-Fi to be enabled nor audio/media to play) and use Mobile Odin Pro .apk (I paid for the pro version) from within that restored recovery to flash the firmware you suggested to my phone again.
This is probably redundant but I just figure I might as well try absolutely everything I can possibly think of with your firmware.
If you have any idea why I might be experiencing these abnormal Odin flashing and/or initial loading conditions of the firmware you (or anybody ) suggested i'd appreciate any advice you can give.
I'm going to try and reflash with Odin on my PC again right now (i'm certain thing's like the USB cable are fine and my PC and phone can transfer data without issue .. but that's why i'm going to try mobile odin if after this next attempt doesn't work either).
I'll keep the thread updated, any and all advice is welcomed and highly appreciated
EDIT: OMG it made a like startup theme sound ... that's the first time it's outputted sound in 3 day's !!! It's at the Samsung screen loading the newly flashed firmware so hopefully that completes because wow my phone made noise finally !! Now to wait, and wait....
It won't go past the Samsung logo. So I guess i'll try Mobile Odin. I don't have much faith but it's worth trying.
Uh the backup of the stock firmware I made won't load ... but the hyperdrive rom did. Sound and the dialer work perfectly fine in this rom now, so I guess thing's are more or less fixed. Even though i've wiped the cache/davlic/internal/data in order to prepare to flash the other firmware or this hyperdrive rom (I wipe it every time) in this rom it's reporting my phone's baseband to be I337MVLUGOC4 which is that of the firmware you suggested ...
I'd still rather not use this rom, I thought it was ok at first but meh i'm going to try to go back to CM (after all this *rolls eyes*), trying to use Mobile Odin to install the firmware that you recommended and that appears to have ... somehow fixed the sound can't detect the model of my phone and is dumping, this is not something that has happened with the app before so I don't think i'll be flashing the firmware you suggested.
If it did something to globally fix the crashing when an app was instructed to play audio as it appears to have I guess i'm going to just go download the full CM now, put it on the SD card and install it with TWRP.
So uh, not 100% there yet but it does appear what you've suggested has solved my problem (because worst case scenario i'll just be stuck with the Hyperdrive rom ... but i'll have a working phone) so thanks so much bud I was quite upset and worried about what I was going to do still paying off a useless phone on a contract i'm stuck with for another year still.
I suppose there's no real need in continuing to update this thread as it appears my problems are solved and all that's left are things i'm doing not to fix anything but just because of personal preference over what rom to use but if you want to know anything more just ask, otherwise thank you so much you saved my ass and i'm very grateful.
So I am really new to rooting/flashing roms (like just started experimenting 5 days ago). I (or rather my phone) have been through smart phone hell. I successfully rooted my device, and the first ROM I flashed was liquidsmooth (don't judge). At this point everything still worked. So (being the greedy person that I am) I decided to try a different one, this time cyanogenmod. It happened to be the latest version (the marshmallow-like one). Once this booted up, I realized I could no longer connect to the network, only WiFi. So I reset it back to liquidsmooth (using a restore I made with ClockworkMod), only now my data still didn't work. After trying several versions of cyangenmod and ultimately getting my binary counter up to 9, I finally decided to try and get back to the stock samsung version I had before (sprint). After a lot of messing around, I was finally successful in this respect and now am back to Android 5.0.1 (lollipop). STILL NO DATA. I looked at my APNs and they are all grayed out (I can't select one) and none are selected. I don't know too much about this, or if this is even causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated!
[Solved]
Well I ended up rooting it, using the "Triangle Away" app to reset the binary counter to 0, unrooted it, then took it to a sprint store. All they did was 'call' ##72786# and it reset the whole user account settings and after that the phone connected fine to the network, and now I am back to where I was when I started all of this. Samsung Galaxy S4 with Lollipop. I am extremely tempted to try all of this again, now that I sorta know what I am doing...
