[Q] adb push denied and update.zip questions - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello! Just upgraded from the Galaxy S2 and want to make some changes to Lollipop on my new-fangled S5. I have stock deodexed lollipop and knox at 0x0 and would like to keep it there. I have been looking and looking but haven't found anything on the following yet that has been helpful:
1. I've modded some of my apks according to the instructions of the guides I'm following but I can't adb push the modded apks back to my phone like I used to. I keep getting permission denied. The instructions in this thread used to work for my S2 but not with my S5. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to overcome this issue?
2. Can I create and install my own updated.zip files to install through stock recovery without tripping knox?
4. I've also found guides for other TW devices that I like. I haven't had much time yet to try them for my S5 but does anyone have any thoughts they would like to share on "converting" a guide from the Note 3 to the S5? (obvi a modding a file like SecMms.apk or something)

I can answer only nr. 2 for now:
The answer is no, you can't install anything with stock recovery, you must have custom recovery to install something and installing a custom recovery will trip Knox flag.

Thanks for the info. So, if I'm making some mods to my stock ROM then I have to figure out how to push apks through adb so that I can restore backups of my original files if something doesn't work quite right because I can't make an update.zip file and install it though stock recovery without tripping knox. Well shoot.

I spent a lot of hours trying to find a way to get it to work with stock recovery but it won't stock recovery blocks ADB once you boot into it, it will only allow access through ADB sideload and that won't let you access system apks, the only way you will get it to work is using a custom recovery like TWRP which will trip knox.
You don't need to use all the ADB commands if you have Android SDK installed.
On your phone go to settings and developer options, then plug your phone into you PC go to SDK / Tools folder, you will see a file monitor.bat, click it a wait for it to load. it is slow so be patient once the window opens make sure at the top DDMS is selected and the File Explorer tab, your phone should be visible on the left, in developer options on your phone untick USB debugging, then tick it again, click OK then next you should get a message to allow access to your computer, tick always then OK, the root directory will appear on the right.
You will see little black icons to the top right one of them is the pull function so you click the apk you want to pull click the pull icon and extract it to the folder you want, to put an apk back just drag and drop it form the folder to the exact same location as the apk you want to replace, you will find it far easier than typing out the adb commands all the time, but you will need a custom recovery to do the modding and changing the apk on the phone as you need to be in recovery mode to replace them and you need to use the custom recovery to mount the system otherwise they wont install.

Thank you so much for the information! Not what I was hoping to hear but such is life, again thank you! I'm wondering though, is it possible to use a root browser to copy and past apks to/from /system/priv-app? Granted if I mess up a mod I might be SOL and have to odin back my stock deodexed ROM...

Yes it is but personally never a way I would do it, I think you need to root your phone to do this as well though but not sure as I have never done it like that, download ES File Explorer from Play Store and use that.

[Q] updating from version 2.3.15 to the latest ota update

i have a rooted droid x running the version above. i am not interested in running custom roms, i just want root so i can run whatever apps i want to. after rooting i downloaded wireless tether and the free version of titanium backup. wireless tether is my only means of connecting my computer to the internet. i ran a complete backup after downloading titanium backup. just messing around one day i removed cardock and blockbuster from the phone. i have restored blockbuster but can not get cardock restored. my phone has downloaded the latest ota update and wants me to install it. from what i have read, i will need cardock restored. is this correct and if so how can i get it back? i am fairly good with a puter but new to android. i rooted using doroot for windows. all help is much appreciated.

2.3.15 is soooo yesterday
look into some deblured Rom's. Easier to get rid of the Crapware with a Rom than one at a time. that could cause other issue.
IMHO there are easier tools to root like 4Zroot.
Your heading in the correct direction keep on reading the threads and different sites.
please read my post again. i am not interested in roms.
Stock apks
www . chadhaney . com / droidXDefault / ( wont allow me to post links) but go there...
Let me know what happens... I'm in the same boat. No roms, just titanium back up and wireless tether ( which I never use ) Titanium Pro allows you to freeze apps so they dont run and you dont have to delete them.
P
According to droid x forums, if your rooted, and have all the original apk/apps on the phone you should be able to update to 2.3.34. Make sure that every setting is stock too. No frozen apps, etc... You will lose root. Then they recommend Z4root to re-root.
Successful install
I was running 2.3.15 rooted, no leak, installed 2.3.34 OTA with no problems.
I used Z4Root 1.3 to re-root my droid x. If you were previously rooted you should select the unroot option from Z4Root first. Phone will restart and then select permanent root. Should be good to go after that...
I did it the hard way... wish I had un-rooted first!
Thanks for helping eyepopper. I downloaded the apk file but it would not install. I assume I need to move it manually but don't know where it goes. The odex file opened when I selected it and looks like code. Not sure how to get it where I need it either. I am using astro for my files.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Are you using the phones browser? Try going the chad website thru the phones browser (I use dolphin browser) download it to the phone. Then run the apk thru the browser, go one step further and make sure that you checked off to allow other non market apps to run in applications. Astro app is the problem most likely.
i am using the stock browser but the page just reloads when i select the apk file and opens a window showing gibberish when i select the odex file. i have the 2 files on my sd card under titanium backup and was able to copy and paste them from /sd/titanium backup to /sd but i can't get them to copy and paste to the system folder or the framework folder. as soon as i leave /sd the paste function grays out. looks like your are the only one willing to help me and i am very grateful for it. i need to go on and get this done and be thru with it so i can enjoy the holidays. can you meet me in a chat somewhere and see if we can get this done? pm me ur info if you can. thanks again...

Ok you will need to connect your phone to your computer. Open a command prompt and type the following commands:
*make sure your phone's usb mode is Charge Only
1) type: Adb devices (make sure your phone gets listed as a device)
2) type: adb shell (press enter)
3) type: su (press enter)
4) type: mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock 4 /system
I'm not sure where you have the cardock.apk on your sdcard, but this next step will require you to know the path to your .apk
5) type: cp /mnt/sdcard/<path to CarDock.apk> /system/app/CarDock/apk
if just on the sdcard then it would be "cp /mnt/sdcard/CarDock.apk /system/app/CarDock.apk
6) type: cd /system/app
7) type: chmod 644 CarDock.apk
8) type: exit
you may need to type exit one more time, but when you return to a normal command prompt, type the following:
adb reboot.
Make sure to take a backup before you do any of this, as if you mess anything up in /system your phone can wind up hosed....
Hope this helps. As a last resort, you could always take a backup of your phone, and then perform the 2.3.15 full sbf and restore the apps that way (make sure to perform a factory reset as well. Then you would be able to perform the OTA update and shouldn't have any problems.
Hope this helps! Lemme know if you need more help.

great post SysAdmin-X, thanks. i haven't used adb manually before but i know if your not careful 1 little missed space or wrong key stroke will mess you up so i opted to go with the post you provided a link for.
i downloaded root explorer and was able to move my files successfully from my sd card to the system apps folder but could not get them to show up afterwards in titanium backup. i figured since they were files i manually removed from tb they were prolly named wrong so to be right i went to this link and downloaded the entire zip. i was then able to place those 2 files in the /system/app folder and after rebooting they showed up in tb. finally...yea!!! ok, i remember reading somewhere they needed to be in the /system/framework folder as well. does anyone know if this is fact? if the update looks for them there and doesn't find them it won't install correctly or at all, so i'm told.

possibly with Root Explorer tool you could change the permissions of the moved apps to rwrr.
this way you phone can see them and use them.
Kdinc is right about changing the permissions using root explorer. Make sure to set the as user: read and write, group: read, and other: read. Should look like this after: rw-r--r--

take a rom, open it with winrar or any extractor and take /system/fonts out of the zip..
(if you need sense fonts, use a flashable zip sense rom, otherwise AOSP)
AOSP fonts do also work on sense, the names are the same
root your phone..
then set up adb , some good guides here on the board..
connect phone with usb, no sdcard mounting
now:
Code:
adb remount
adb push yourfont.ttf /system/fonts
(repeat as long as you have ttf files: might work if you use *.ttf)
adb reboot
if you don't want to root, i don't know how to do it
EDIT: hope you are already rooted because with no fonts, how would you root your phone,
or install the necessairy files.. didn't notice it yet
grtz
that was not possible
i had to downlaod last rom at http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=all , install it back to 1.5, then upgrade all the way OTA till latest version for it (a.k.a 2.1) , now back to normal

@Bashar, if you root it again and want to experiment. Make sure you got a custom recovery. Easier to solve mess I guess You can create back-ups of your normal ROM in it as well. Anyway, glad it is back to normal.

[Q] Acer Iconia Factory reset and now no WIFI

HI Guys,
Maybe somewhat can help me out here, in my attempt to update my Acer A500, I may have in a kind of way bricked my phone. I attempted to replace wpa_supplicant file as per some of the instructions, needless to say the update failed and me in my pure genius figure I would simply factory reset and reboot. Which I ended up doing, the problem now is that the WIFI does not turn on and my tab has been unrooted, I no longer have any file explorer app on the phone and I can't download anything. Does anybody know how I can gain access to the root files so that I may revert back the old file, or somehow install an apk file from the mini sdcard or even get access to the internet via bluetooth or USB. Anything would be helpful.
FYI - I am trying to gain access to my root files using Android SDK, but I've always had problems getting any of my pc to find any of the android stuff when plugged in.

I was in this court just yesterday, swearing up and down for some reason.
You'll need the root explorer apk, gingerbreak apk and the original wpa_supplicant file posted all over XDA.
Download and install Android SDK. It will also make you download the Java SDK too before you install the Android one. Start installing the Android SDK. It will seem like it's going to take forever, but you really only need what's in the folders 2 minutes in.
Go into the program files folder where the SDK stuff is and rip the 3 ADB files out and place them in their own folder. Mine were in: c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools\
I took the 3 files out and placed them in c:\and\
Place the apks in the c:\and\ folder
Make sure the driver files are installed from the Acer website.
Make sure USB bugging and apps from outside sources are enabled in settings on the tab.
Plug the tab into the PC via USB.
Open up the command prompt and go to the c:\and\ folder
then type
adb install c:\and\rootexplorer.apk
ENTER
then
adb install c:\and\gingerbreak-v1.20.apk
ENTER
The apps should be now installed on the tab.
Then just transfer the wpa_supplicant file over and you're right where you need to be.
Make sure you change the permissions on the wpa_supplicant file like you did the first time (enable everything read/write/etc etc) by holding on the wpa_supplicant file that you paste.

You are my new hero, all this time I've been trying to get Android ADK to recognize my tablet, but to no success. All I had to do was run ADB, which Ironically I had done, but only to see if it recognizes my unit. I was not aware I can install apps with it.
I'm not worthy... I'm not worthy
A million thank you's, now to try and get 3.1 installed and hopefully Googel/android was smart enough to put in a stock file explorer.
Not working wifi hardware
Somewhat similar to what happened to this guy. But to be specific, I am using an acer a500 originally on a rooted ics 4.0.3, i remember using lucky patcher and using the custom patch on adobe flash player then i saw an update regarding busybox and superSU...i was able to install the busybox updater but not the superSU since i remembered i already had superuser. I opened superuser and then it updated...from then on...I lost my wifi...at start it was still there but it can't connect. also, i lost my root because i no longer am able to use titanium backup. double checking it, i downloaded a root checker and it displayed not properly rooted. seeing this, i thought it's been a long time since i've updated my rom so i might as well upgrade everything...my bootloader, kernel, rom. So i first degraded it by flashing to the full package stock HC 3.1 ROM (it had an old HC 3.1 bootloader). Then i noticed i can no longer turn on my wifi and use my old apps...I flashed it back to a NON-rooted stock ics 4.0.3 thinking it might fix it...but it did not. HELP please...

Can't write on internal SD card after root

After having rooted (with nexus 10 toolkit v1.3.0) my nexus 10 and flashed AOPK Nexus 10 (WIP) Task650 & Ktoonsez (1-4) rom, I'm unable to upload to, change or move any files or folders on my internal SD card. I installed Root Explorer and changed from Mount R/O to Mounted as r/w. Access is granted by Super SU. I also tried to change permission settings, unfortunatedly without any success. There appeared the following message:
"Warning
Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
Is there a possibility to change these permissions in order to be able to create and move files and folders on my SD card?
Thanks for taking your time to help me with my issue!
Anzirothu
1. Clear cache
2. Clear dalvik
3. Fix Permissions
forgot something ?
Thank you for your reply, Patrik!
1. done.
2. done.
3. Fix Permissions - How? With cwm? I did fix permissions with cwm recovery, but the problem persists...
Just so we are clear, when you say "upload to, change, or move" are you meaning you cannot copy a file from your computer to your Nexus 10? Or just that you cant arrange stuff through root explorer from within the tablet itself?
Neither copying from PC to Nexus nor arranging stuff through root exlorer from within the tablet itself. I can't even download an email attachment and put it to the SD card. The card seems to be locked.
I had that problem once but I dont remember what caused it or what exactly I did to fix. I think I just did a complete wipe by locking and unlocking the bootloader and then installing a new ROM again.
I think I did this too (unroot, lock bootloader, then root and unlock bootloader) and then installed the same rom again. I will try it this time with another rom.
Isn't there really no other solution to get access to my SD card again??
Thx for your help!
Are you using a toolkit to unlock and root? If so them maybe it is not doing something right and it messing up a permissions somewhere. It could also be a driver problem on your PC with being unable to copy a file to the tablet.
Thank you for your help!
I am using the nexus 10 toolkit V1.3.0. Right now I'm trying to intall twrp recovery with a fully wiped sd card. No easy task fot me being a noob...
In ClockWorkMod, make sure that /data is mounted
Then download the Android SDK: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
I usually put all the files just in C:/android-sdk-windows
Once you have it all there open up the SDK Manager and download all the additional files needed. You probably only need to download "Android SDK Tools" and "Android SDK Platform-tools", but I always download the other files for whatever version of Android I am running, in our case Android 4.2. That way I have them if I need to do something else.
Once downloaded, open the Android-sdk-windows/platform-tools directory. copy:
adb.exe
adbWinApi.dll
adbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
to your base C:/Android-SDK-Windows directory.
Now open command prompt from Start -> run
type: cd C:/Android-SDK-Windows
type: "adb devices" and it should list your tablet. It will actually say something with your devices serial number and then "Recovery" after it, showing your tablet is in recovery. If you dont see this then you either dont have your tablet mounted right from in the Recovery, ClockWorkMod is stupid, or you dont have working adb drivers.
Now copy the ROM you want to flash to C:/Android-SDK-Windows
Then type: "adb push blahblahblah.zip /data/media/0"
That should push the ROM to the root of your SD card. Give it time, it takes a while to push a ROM file. Once it is done, flash the ROM.
That *should* put it in the right spot where it looks like it is on your "internal storage" (what you see when navigating files within the ROM). If you dont see the ROM in clockworkMod then keep navigating back to the root of your internal storage and then open up "data", then "media", then "0" and you should see it. If you still cant find the ROM, push it again but just use "/data/media" as the location.
I just did all these steps myself to verify I remembered it all correct and I was able to successfully copy a ROM and find it on my tablet to flash by doing everything I just listed above. SO you should be good to go if you follow all those steps properly. I know it looks like a lot of work, but it really isnt and will go quite fast. Most of it is just the setup for getting ADB and Fastboot ready to use.
For a ROM to install, I would recommend to someone new like you either of these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2071082
^^^^^ That one is pretty close to the stock ROM with a few fixes and a couple extra features
or: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2071082
^^^^^ This one is pretty much CyanogenMod 10.1, but built by a different guy and not pulling every new thing from CM, just the "cherry picks" of features. It tends to be a bit more stable and less buggy than the real CM10.1 nightly's
And for a kernel you can flash and forget you will want to try this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2098157
^^^^^ To flash that you will want to do a similar thing as how you pushed the ROM to your device. Only this time you will copy the kernels' "boot-r4.img" file into your android-adk-windows directory and use the command: "fastboot flash boot boot-r4.img"
While I enjoy the KTManta kernel more, it does require a bit of tweaking to get running perfect. Which is one of the things I like about it because of all the options to tweak. But for someone just learning this stuff that would be a bad thing, so Franco's kernel is much better than stock and doesnt require you to adjust anything once it is flashed to your tablet.

Viper4Android S-ON/OFF Workaround

I have successfully created my own bypass to get viper4android to work. Always create a full backup before attempting =)
1. Download viper4android APK
2. Download Root Explorer from the playstore
3. Install Both Apps
4. Launch Root Explorer
5. In root explorer go to /system/lib/soundfx and copy the folder to /data/ (make a soundfx folder)
6. Also copy /system/etc/audio_effects.conf to the /data/soundfx/ folder
7. Using root explorers menu you can create a shortcut (symbolic link) make a shortcut of the /data/soundfx/ folder and a shortcut of the /data/soundfx/audio_effects.conf
8. Boot into TWRP
9.Mount the system partition
10. Rename /system/lib/soundfx to /system/lib/soundfx2
11. Copy soundfx shortcut create earlier to /system/lib/ it will look like a "file" to TWRP
12.Rename the /system/etc/audio_effects.conf to /system/etc/audio_effects.conf1
13. Copy the audio_effects shortcut into /system/etc/ (be sure its name matches the old exactly)
15. Reboot
16. Launch Viper and install driver
I haven't dealt with LPA yet (hasn't had an issue) nor have I done any other modifications at this time which are avail on the viper4android thread.
I was just thinking about symbolic links to get around this S-OFF/ON issue and it appears they work and technically as a workaround we could symbolically link everything in system to another location and access it all. This could easily be put into ROM builds now at least as well!
Build.Prop may be useful to move out via sym link as well
It's not a matter of being s-on or s-off.. It's a matter of having write protection removed then you can do all of that. S-off just allows you to flash any partition on the device.. (radio, hboot etc..) plus you can flash any ruu you want as long as you change to supercid
There is a kernel module in dev and it's working great on my device.
On M7 it seems to me that the S-OFF also disables write protection system on stock rom

But you don't need s-off to disable write protection. You just need a kernel with it disabled or the kernel module which flair posted in the development section. I'm using it and am able to write to the system fine and I'm s-on. The title of the thread should be something like "with write protection on" not s-on.
I just wanted to clarify that with S-OFF this module is useless

You don't need to clarify that to me. I'm very well aware of that. My point was that for this topic you don't need s-off for this to work.. You just need write protection off. Whether that be with with s-off or with a module.. This working is not dependant on s-off.. It's dependant on write protection being off. That is my point.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
For anyone who wants the stock kernel with write protection off just use this JMZM8 Kernel and then just install busybox like regular and boom Viper4Android, literally made my M8 sound so much better (not that it wasn't already awesome)
worked with htc 816 running indian stock, which still has no s-off at the moment,
had to go to twrp recovery terminal command, to make the symbolic links or move directories....
viper4android made a lot of difference in this particular model.
the next thing would be to make viper4a a system app, since it tended to close and thus lower the volume, usually after some time.

had to go to twrp recovery terminal command, to make the symbolic links or move directories....

you can try and copy the app or push it in recovery to System/app. if you put it manually in not push via adb be sure to set the right permissions if the recovery doesn't set them automatically ! it should work even without s-off

will try to make it work .... meanwhile from what i gathered in a htc 816 facebook group, most indian pple buying this particular model seems to have no clue about making the most out of its audio properties ... the 816's true selling points were its larger 5.5 " size, great audio output, and relatively low cost compared with other htc flagship models.

done ... went to twrp recovery,
moved "com.vipercn.viper4android_v2-1.apk" from ""/data/app" to "/system/priv-app"
moved "com.vipercn.viper4anddroid_v2-1/libV4AJniUtils.so" from to "/data/app-lib" to "/system/lib/"
should be working fine, havent extensively tested it out yet though,
reported as a system app, and viper driver is running.
I Can't Get data/soundfx Shortcut to Transfer to /System/lib
In the opening instructions, #11 says that we have to transfer the data/soundfx shortcut to /system/lib. Everytime I try it with TWRP it just says failed. If I try it with root browser,
it will say successful until the phone is rebooted. Any help would be appreciated. I am a newbie to these things.

u need to install twrp recovery for htc 816.
get it from "TeamWin Projects" website.
after successfully installing twrp, boot into recovery mode, use twrp to move data/soundfx shortcut to /system/lib, etc...
hope u get to install viperfx successfully and make full blast of the great audio output of this big value music machine, makes a near perfect combo with my music angel cube speakers(as far as mine human ears tell me), anyone using this combo too?
later htc models based on mediatek chipsets seem to have horrible audio outputs ... maybe even iphone 6 and samsung note4 cant beat htc 816 where mp3 output is concerned
background: htc 816 doesnt has s-off, so its always s-on, which means if u try to write to the "/system" folder, the phone will trigger a reboot immediately, to prevent any modifications to the folder. root browser will not be able to write to /system folder, even if the phone has root access, due to this s-on protection. The only way to edit /system folder is to boot to twrp (in recovery mode).

Will this method work without busybox?
There is a very specific reason why I'd not like to use busybox, so this may end up being a very good solution for me.

What's wrong with busybox? its a hidden process only used when an app like V4A calls for it, other then that it has no negative effect. why avoid it?
Besides this thread is disinfo, all this is not required to get V4A working, Go to this thread Here and follow instructions.

U followed the steps by blewis?
Why it is so complicated..???.if s-on, unlock bootloader and flash a custom kernel (elementalx). In install options just choose to set SElinux permissive. Then, install driver for Viper and reboot. That is it. If s-off, start with kernel installation...
People are talking about that s-off gives full access to system partition - true but not correct. Unlocked bootloader gives write access to system folder, while s-off in addition allows to change partitions, bootloader, etc.

Welp, it's so complicated because NONE of the instructions seem to work for a huge number of us. I've tried like 5 "failsafe" methods but they just fail and fail.
ONE time I had it working and was all psyched, and then I restarted the phone at some point and that was the end of that. Never worked since.
