I just ordered a refurbished Asus tablet (the 16 gig one) from Tiger Direct and it says it will come with Honeycomb 3.0.
Now I looked around the message boards at the different rooting methods and its all much different then what I'm used to with rooting android phones.
I don't plan on putting new roms on the tablet, just other things like downloaded apps without going through the market.
Should I do the OTA update first before rooting or just root and not update? And which method is the easiest root method?
also to put apps on the tablet that say I downloaded from a website, does the tablet have to be rooted for that or not?
Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to mess this up.
Has nothing to do with ur question but..i was thinking about buying one from tigerdirect also..if u dont mind..when u get it could you post the condition it came in and how u like it..
I wouldn't update. Just flash a rom and go from their. The roms that are on this site are awsome
I will do. I should get it early next week.

Well I wasn't really wanting to go through the process of flashing a rom. But are there any roms that will give more features then what already comes with the pad?
oops didn't realize I wasn't suppose to post a question here. sorry.
The currently used root expoit only works on 3.2.1 so i would update to there. You will probably have to use vipermod or Nachoroot to root it depending on the serial number if it is B70 or lower use NVFlash to flash your first rom straight out without updating if it is B80+ then you need to update before you root
Edit: roms add a lot of speed, overclocking, addblocking, and different extra features depending on the rom you chose.
And no you do not need to be rooted to install apps you download from the browser, see "sideloading"
Ahhh ok thank you!

I bought one refurbished for $299 last week. Got it within two days!
There is one really small scratch on the top corner of the case and a very tiny (< 1mm) dent on the edge of the bezel. Most of these cosmetic issues are not noticeable unless you are actually looking for it. The screen is perfect. There are no other flaws with the device. I would test all the mechanical and electrical stuff once you get it (cameras, connectors, radios, light sensor, etc).
The box comes only with the tablet and the charging/usb cable.
Also, I'm going to leave it un-rooted and with the stock ROM until ICS (hopefully). If ICS never shows up for it, then I will root and custom ROM.
For my Nook Color are there any recommendations if I should flash to stock ROM or leave CM7 on it for potential resale ?
It has never been registered since I installed CM7 (current latest nightly build) immediately after taking it out of the box a few months ago.
Just want to put it in the proper state for the purchaser.
thanks.
I would wipe all three caches then an 8+1 reload. That will put it back to out of the box condition, if they want you to put CM7 or whatever on it, charge them for a service.
Just ask the buyer what they would like. If they want CM7, you should do a complete wipe and reflash it. To return to stock use the guide in my sig.

Good point. I'll think asking the buyer what they want would be a good idea!

I was looking at eBay for a while, checking prices of Nook Colors. I think generally (and particularly when the tablets being sold were not new) people were willing to pay more when they were already flashed w/CM 7.
The best deal I found was a pair of NCs for $240 ($120 ea) but I saw sales of "like new condition" NCs flashed with CM 7.1 going for over $180 (bear in mind you can get the "refurbished" NCs w/warranty for $149).
It would seem that selling it "flashed to out of box factory defaults" with giving the buyer the option of having it flashed to CM might get you the best sale price if selling on eBay?
If you're planning on giving a completely stock nook, just clear everything, flash a complete restore (I've only been able to find a 1.1 zip), and what I always do to restore it to the original version (Mine is 1.2) is the interrupt reset 8 times to get a factory restore, than I recommend registering, installing the 1.4 update, then de-registering, because I believe it keeps the update installed.

I'm timing the sale of my nook with the release of a robust Tegra 3 tablet, but if I was buying your nook, I'd probably pay an extra 25 bucks for the option of stock on internal and the cm7/cm9 dual boot on an external sd.

So my sprint S4 arrived today and when i first booted it up it was in Factory mode... I called Tech support and they guided me to hard resetting it by going into settings and doing a factory reset, but that didnt work, also by holding volume up, home button, and power button at the same time during boot up, but that also did nothing. My only options apparently are to wait for a sprint store to get spare ones to replace mine with or pay up front for another one, and get one shipped to me and ship this one back... I'd much rather attempt to fix it myself, If i can.
Anyone know if I can root it or do a recovery with a stock rom or anything else? Ive only ever rooted one android phone and that was years ago, so im pretty rusty but I think i can handle it, im a comp science major and took an intro to unix class so i got this! haha just looking to get guided the right way, in the meantime i will continue reading rooting threads. PS: IDK if this means anything but while messing around with the buttons during boot up I entered Odin mode or something asking if i was sure i wanted to download a custom OS then it hung on Downloading... Also I navigated through the settings menu and there was no sign of a developement or USB debugging option :[ Below are screens of what it looks like.

Post a few times?
This phone of yours is what the devs need, so they can reverse engineer it and put AOSP, CM, AOKP, etc on it.
This thread should go to some where people/devs would visit more often, so it gets more exposure and have more productive work done faster.
Here's an idea: those, who bought the qualcomm version and hoping to run CM on it, should chip in to buy this phone, so this guy can buy another phone, then send this phone to some dev.

Enjoying the HTC One so far I agree with the others they can all chip in and pay for the device so it can be shipped to a dev who can pull the AOSP source off it and build a CM ROM / Standard AOSP ROM.

I recently purchased a Nexus 7 from craigslist. Unfortunately I don't believe the seller was fully truthful (surprise). When I got home I tried to connect it to my home Wi-Fi and for some reason it keeps saying there is an authentication problem. It won't let me do anything other then select a language and connect to Wi-Fi. He said it had 4.4 on it, and lucky for me, I bought the tablet to experiment with rooting, flashing, etc. Does anyone have suggestions on where to start with this thing?
*Edited the version which I was told was on it.
Have you tried a reboot? Several have posted a reboot resolved their problem with this.

Hi, LVMickey...
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
These are Factory Stock Images for Nexus devices... sort of like installable versions of Windows... but for Android instead.
-----------------------------
** If you have the WiFi only Nexus 7, you need the 'Nakasi' version.
** If you have the WiFi & 3G (Mobile) Nexus 7, you need the 'Nakasig' version.
** KOT49H is the latest build version (KitKat 4.4.2).
-----------------------------
Make sure your Nexus 7 is definitely the first generation model (2012)... because the second generation model (2013) requires the Razor and Razorg factory images.
Download the correct one to your PC... and then follow the instructions given here...
[GUIDE] Flashing a Factory Image with fastboot / return to stock.
Hope this clarifies a few things... and good luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.
out of curiosity, how much did you pay for it.
just wondering because i was playing around with the newer Nexux 7 at walmart and i got tempted to jump ship to the newer version. If i do,i will sell it on craigslist.
seems like they are going for between 90-110 bucks.

You can get at least $100-120 from a pawn shop, then if you change your mind, you have time to get it back. Just a thought. That's what I did- I pawned my N7, got a new tablet, then went back later and got my N7 back. Now I have both lol, which wasn't the plan, but I love them both so much for different things! Anyway, point is you'd get what you want money-wise without having to commit to the sale (just in case).
I bought an i337 right before the MF3 release. Luckily, I was able to prevent the OTA, unlocked it, rooted it and found a custom ROM that was smooth, bug free and gave me no trouble with the modem, BT, WiFi, etc. Heaven.
3 weeks later I reached in my pocket and it was cracked. Wouldn't even boot, no download mode, no ADB, nothing. DOA.
I had insurance, so after the hefty deductible I had a replacement... with MF3. Ugh. Fine. Rooted, Wanman, I did a lot of reading here. I considered SafeStrap, but honestly, I had spent so much time on it... I was making do.
Well, something is up with this device. I have never been able to get the MK2 OTA. After a while, pressing the update button to check didn't do anything at all. No response. Fine. I'll live with this. How bad could it be? I mean, the popups are anoying, The Amber Alert went off 6 times in 30 minutes, I hate the TouchWize BS, but it works, right?
Lately, reboots. And problems with Apps that no one else has. Is it because I am rooted? I didn't do anything with this- just some Tasker stuff and the Xposed. Then my BT starts to cut out all the time. Car stereo randomly drops BT. Samsung media player plays random files from wherever it finds them, especially the Samsung theme song and some strange subset of spotify files. But now it's playing and there's no PLAYER. I can't turn it off. And it's playing during phone calls, and DOUBLE PLAYING dhen I am listening to podcasts. Some apps lock up. Power button presses don't work. Enough.
I tried unrooting. I tried a factory reset. Enough Let's do Safestrap...
****. I have a 16GB version. Not a lot room for that. I don't want to waste any more time...
Fine Factory Wipe. STILL CAN'T UPDATE OTA to MK2?! Something's up. Flash the MF3 Files. Still broken. This thing is a mess.
So the question is... what do I do?
1) Cut my losses. I have a Nexus 5 in my hand. I like it. I could load ROMs. can't swap the battery, and there's no SD card. Dammit. The battery could be a killer for me. I don't want to spend money, but I am done having to reboot in the middle of a business call because it's playing a podcast over the connection.
2) Take it back and demand a new one. With all this AT&T bull**** and locked bootloader. Is this one just a bum phone, or do any of you have these issues?
3) Safestrap + a safestrap ROM. Any good suggestions? Looking for Stable , good BT support and the ability to turn off annoying **** that will wake my wife and kids up at night.
Sorry to post here with what's probably stuff that's been answered- but I just don't have the will to spend any more time or money on this. $400 for the phone + insurance replacement, extra batteries, case, etc. I hate this ****ing thing so much- and even more because I had the previous one so perfect.
Thanks in advance.
And after all that, still stuck on 4.2.2, the root exploit is failing on my phone (it worked before, but not this time). There's only one or two searches coming up with anyone else having this problem, so I don't expect it to work. So no SafeStrap.
Check Please.
Hopefully that N5 battery can last.

No problem, just remember to back up any apps and whatnot; you're flashing a stock image that will wipe all internal data

Thanks for the warning. At the moment, it's about as stock as it can be though. Nothing to lose!
Hopefully getting a fresh install gets rid of those issues you were having, but if they persist, you probably got a bad replacement (likely a refurb).
Sounds like your phone needs a complete reset via Odin including the PIT file so you can repartition the entire device...
Get to MK2 Odin files
Get a 16 GB Galaxy S4 PIT file
Open Odin, assign the files to their correct spots...
Turn phone on in Download Mode, connect USB
Proceed to flash, and hope for the best...
If your successful with that I would use Saferoot to obtain root as soon as possible to avoid receiving the new NB1 (Android 4.4) update. From their follow the guides post in this thread to get Safestrap 3.71 installed. I recommend Hyperdrive or SHOStock for your daily driver... though your mileage may very.
Quick note to all those who were trying to help...
I really do believe there was a problem with this phone.
In order to have it replaced, AT&T asked me to do the OTA. It's now 4.4, so no hope of Rooting.
However, they are replacing it. I *may* play with that one if it's not 4.4, and see if I can SafeStrap it, make myself happy.
But most likely I am moving on to the Nexus 5 + Pac ROM or CM or something new, and I am selling the replacement on eBay.
Please don't waste any more of your time trying to help out. I appreciate all the suggestions, but I think I am done. Hopefully someone at Samsung will come to their senses and this BS will stop. When they do, I will come back to these phones. Until then, I am blessed to be able to afford unlocked devices, and I will not go back.
I have to admit, this community has done a great job of being good to newbies and to guys like me, who aren't quite newbies but don't have the time to get in too deep. Thanks again.
I'd like to purchase the phone if you haven't sold it on eBay

I have had similar gremlins recently. It's just not a very good phone or at least at&t have made it mediocre. That said, you may have had problems with the update if you deleted or froze any stock apps.

Thanks for the info.
I had my original s4 (MDL) running CM and PacRom and it was awesome. TouchWiz + AT&T mods is the problem. The phone wouldn't even recognize my voice well through my car stereo hands free. (the PacRom version was perfect).
Anyway, I used Odin to flash mk2 stock, then had at&t replace it under warranty. I just sold that one. I'm typing this on a Nexus 5 with a modified Paranoid Android 4.0.
(wtf? PA removed the quick setting button for sound/silent in 4.0/4.1 so I had to find a mod.)
So far so good. I'm worried about not being able to swap the battery, but I love the wireless charging.
