Can't boot any custom rom - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought Galaxy S5 G900F and i tried to flash few custom roms but it just won't boot, it gets stuck at first Samsung screen (the black and white one) and it hangs there, the phone is properly rooted, i've tried to flash roms with both TWRP and ClockworkMod, all goes well and after reboot it gets stuck...i'm not new in all of this and i did it countless times before on my other phones including another S5, i also have Galaxy Alpha which is running custom rom and like i said i had S5 before, and never had any issues with flashing custom roms...flashing custom recovery, supersu and in the end custom rom goes without any issues, then after reboot it get's stuck, and that happens with every single custom rom. I'm running stock Lollipop btw. Any suggestions?

Did you try wiping dalvik and cache and factory resetting (all) in recovery before booting?.....sometimes that's all it needs.....
Also, don't forget that the first boot of ANY custom rom can take longer than you'd expect.......

Yes, i did all that, like so many times before but this time nothing works. I know that first boot can take longer but it doesn't get stuck on a Samsung boot animation but on a first screen, it doesn't even start to boot.

What's the difference between this S5 and your other one?.......
Was the other unit running stock KK?
If it was, maybe you could try flashing THIS unit to stock KK, then rooting it, CWMing it and custom flashing it from the KK base........
That's the only other thing I can think of......

But one thing to bear in mind, I've read that you have to be REALLY thorough with the wipes when reverting back from Lollipop......Some people have said that wiping data at least TWICE is necessary or booting problems will be faced.....

Both are European G900F, and the other one was running 5.0 also, and i never had any problems with installing and booting custom roms...i really don't know what's wrong here.

I know that the version of CWM/TWRP have to be compatible with whatever version of custom rom you are trying to flash.......could there be an issue there?

Both CWM and TWRP are for this S5 variant....i'm gonna try flashing some CyanogenMod rom and see what will happen then, all the roms i couldn't boot are N4 and S6 ports

I just booted CM12....same recovery, same everything and it booted in like a minute or two...

I guess that means you're sorted then?......

[Q] Operating system on your device has been modified?

Hi guys i recently just myself a galaxy s5. I noticed that a few of mates got an update on their s5's but not on mine? Still stuck on the 4.4.2. I've tried to update it but this pops up "operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using samsung kies on your pc or visit a customer service centre." At the moment i don't have my comouter on me (long story).
You'll need a PC
Stock ROM from sammobile dot com
ODIN on PC to flash it
You could try fully unrooting it if that's what's making it custom, by opening SuperSU (If that has been installed) and using the fully unroot option in settings
But if you have a custom recovery or kernel, or ROM, you'll need the PC and ODIN method
If the OP has root access, he could try flashing the stock firmware/rom with flashfire or Mobile Odin.......pc not necessary.......

Might be difficult downloading the ROM and extracting it using just a phone, but yea if OP has the ROM, nice tip

Yeah....true.....
Just posted my suggestion as OP said he has no access to a PC at the moment....didn't think about the downloading side of things.....

Always good to have more than one method
These days though, you're not usually far away from a PC, sure OP could borrow one if needed

help plz

Guys is there any way to install xposed on lollipop s5 ?
From what I've read, the only way (at the moment) is to install the framework through (custom) recovery......
With KitKat, it was possible to install as an app.
Also bear in mind that not all the modules are ready for use with lollipop......

No there is no way to "install" it. You will have to modify core system files and then make a flashable zip and then maybe it will work after installing the app, but it's in extreme alpha mode and i would advice you to not try and make it work based on the "help plz" title even though bootloop is the worst thing that can happen while trying to make xposed work.
Ya there is a way to install for sure via custom recovery
Luckily i have xposed frmawork pre installed on the current custom rom um using
Thx for your frank answer : D

Are there any devoted Kit Kat users left?

I am interested in downgrading to a Kit Kat Rom.
Do you still use 4.4.2 to 4.4.4? If so, how does it compare? Are there any apps that won't work as a result?
Galaxy S5 G900V / OptimalRom R13-1 / ADB Debloat /Nova Prime: Via Tapatalk
Never updated to Lollipop.....always had my device with KitKat on it so I can't offer a comparison.....The reason I've stayed with KK?......
Xposed and it's associated modules aren't compatible with Touchwiz LP.........

You've got a G900F... use another rom & I think xposed works fine. I hear AICP is nice. I'm on official cyanogenmod nightly but the battery blows
Although I suppose flashing a rom would probably trip the knox counter, but idk
Lol....It would trip knox.....and for me at the moment, an intact warranty is more important than going fully custom (my phone is only just 6 months old).....I've got my phone how I want it as it is.....
I'm rooted and debloated and (for what it's worth) my antutu scores are consistently higher than a standard unrooted stock S5. Maybe in another 6 months or so, I *might* consider CM or another cusRom, but not just yet......

My battery isn't as good as I had hoped on OC5 OPTIMALROM with adb debloat and greenify.
I have tried calibrating. I have tried many things. I've heard I may need to replace the battery.
Alliance Build 2 for 4.4.x looks very appealing. I may have to make the swap =)
Made a post about extended life batteries. 5000+mah sounds amazing.

Rooting from Towelroot

Hi, I've been using Towelroot for a long time, and thought that it's time to upgrade to Lollipop. Is there a step by step guide for how to do this? I can only find guides on rooting on stock lollipop, and not this type of specific transition.
My specs:
Model No.: SM-G900F
Android Ver: 4.4.2
Baseband Ver: G900FXXU1ANCE
Kernel Ver: 3.4.0-1186806
[email protected] #1
Mon Mar 31 19:57:36 KST 2014
Build No: KOT49H.G900FXXU1ANCF
Towelroot WILL NOT work on lollipop......
If you are running a device with rooted kitkat, use Flashfire app to upgrade to LP and retain root......

from what ive read on the flashfire guide, it says only a SM-G900P version can be used? is there a SM-G900F version that I'm not finding?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3075433
Where does it say it's only for 900P?

hmm, i could have sworn i saw a thread about that.
anyway, is there a guide on using flashfire? the link you gave me had no instructions at all.
1. does it factory reset my phone?
2. do i need to download a lollipop firmware?
EDIT: I've installed FlashFire on my phone, but I can't even open the app. When I click it, the screen goes white for 1 second then the app closes.
The last few pages of that thread will explain why..... and offer a temporary 'work around'.....

ok, its working now. but i dont have a lollipop firmware at all.
Two websites.......
Samsung-updates dot com
Or
Sammobile dot com
(Apparently we're not allowed to post links to those sites on XDA)

Custom Recovery With KNOX 0 - I am rooted

Hello,
I would like to have a custom rom on my s5 and I want my knox 0. Im rooted on lollipop 5.0. It's possible? I need to put a custom recovery and if I do that, my knox will be at 1. Someone can tell how to install custom recovery with always my knox 0.
Thank you.
You can't other than safestrap which is not working on 5, you can use flashfire but that isn't really a recovery except for the flashing zips part.

Won't a custom rom install it's own recovery?......that being the case, even if you didn't start out by flashing a standalone custom recovery, knox is still going to be tripped when you flash the custom rom.......

Not 100% but I don't think custom rom trips lnox its recovery(and unless you use towelroot then by proxy root) that trips it, I might be wrong though.

I was under the impression / had heard that flashing any 'unsigned' (non Samsung, unofficial) software would trip knox........

Not all too sure myself, I know with custom recoveries its when you boot in to the custom recovery, next to no idea about things like CM and stuff though, that said I think they require flashing through a custom recovery so like I said above with root, your probably trip it by proxy from needing the recovery.

If you keep stock kernel and recovery and only flash custom rom via mobile odin/flash fire the knox won't be tripped. I had my S5 like that for a while before I decided to flash custom recovery.

Good to know
Which roms are compatible with a stock kernel?
http://i.imgur.com/rVnFwJM.jpg
This is the one I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/development/rom-neatrom-v1-t2828562
This one should work as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/development/galaxy-project-galaxy-s5-t3138583
Basically every rom that doesn't include custom kernel should work.
