Its a shame, HTC used to be top of the line back a few years ago.
HTC lost my business a decade ago when I begged them to get us HW accelerated video drivers for our Windoze Mobile 6.1 phone & their response was that they appreciated the request and they would work on making new phones w/ hardware acceleration. Of course, the community had to cobble together a HW Accelerated 3d driver; but I promised myself that I would never buy another HTC phone again.

Probably will not happen...Asus' cellphone division is profitable as it stands, and Asus traditionally likes to organically grow their divisions from within. While I could be wrong, I doubt Asus wants to pick up HTC's debt and problems.

I have two HTC One M8's in the house, and a Nexus 9. I contacted their support team for manufacturer warranty/repair for the overpriced $130 keyboard folio for the Nexus 9, that won't charge. They told me "We don't have warranties on accessories." and offered no option for repair, told me I could buy another one...I was SHOCKED! Shouldn't be though, bought one of those HTC BT key finder things, and it was a piece of garbage.

City AM claims that Carphone Warehouse has signed an agreement with google to distribute the nexus two before christmas. no info about what manufacturer will make the phone, but it will ship with gingerbread and replace the N1 as the dev phone.
http://www.cityam.com/news-and-analysis/google-and-carphone-mobile-deal
This would be awesome, I just hope it isn't too good to be true.
UK only? i dont understand why that would be..
i am assuming they have exclusivity for the UK, probably not for the US. i think they are somehow related to best buy, which could possibly mean the n2 will be sold in "actual" stores.
There's no Nexus Two and there will be no Nexus Two
It could be real because we need a next generation developer phone for more advanced stuff that the old Nexus One doesn't support due to its current hardware. In order for Google to develop a better on screen multitouch keyboard, and other advanced gestures, the Nexus One's poor touchscreen won't do it. If Gingerbread is confirmed to have native front facing camera support, they will need a new hardware with a front facing camera to test it on. Google might also add a gyroscope and other innovative hardware (including a higher resolution screen) in the new phone to set another standard for the 2011 high end Android phones.
4"screen with front facing camera...
I would get it...

Nexus Two Launching Alongside Gingerbread in Time for the Holidays?
by Kevin Krause on October 26th, 2010
An interesting report has surfaced from London-based business paper City A.M. that claims the followup to the Nexus One — what very well could be dubbed the Nexus Two — will be released through an exclusive deal with Carphone Warehouse in the UK as the second Google-branded Android handset. This comes as a new but similar approach to the sale of the original N1, moving away from a single Google-owned site pedaling the smartphone but still bucking carrier obligations.
Other than the fact that City A.M. happens to be a pretty reputable source, we have plenty of reasons to believe the Nexus Two is real. What better way to launch the latest update to Android, Gingerbread, then alongside a brand new Nexus handset? The discontinuation of sales through Google of the Nexus One over the summer and the throttling back of N1 support through the soon to be read-only forums all hint at an upcoming successor, especially after Google bigwigs remain incessant that they haven’t given up on their handheld ventures, only the model they originally used to sell mobile phones.
Questions still remain unanswered, including which manufacturer might take the reigns on the Nexus Two. Google could very well stick with HTC, though Motorola and their top-secret Tegra 2 handset remains a viable option. Heck, we may have even already spied the Nexus Two floating around as a codenamed device. What’s your guess?

I hope this is true. Been waiting for a proper Nexus replacement with an eay unlock bootloader. The G2 is not cutting it...
Hopefully it comes with a keyboard, if not then I will still buy it.

N1 is still a highly capable device. Don't see a reason why Big G would release N2 so soon. HTC and Samsung are making more powerful devices that can support gingerbread so hardware is already there.

So my birthday is coming up, and I was wondering if should stick with getting the HD2 off of amazon, I had my eyes set for a Nokia N900 for a long time, but since they are ditching Maemo there is no point in buying one.... and the N9 is going to be wayy to expensive for me.
So any suggestions? I'm pretty much a n00b to the smartphone world, but basically I want a phone that is versatile like the N900 or HD2, but nothing proprietary please.

Too late and not worth the money spent anymore. I personally would pay no more than $199 for this device new, and $100 ~ 130 for it used. This is my perspective.

Actually I own a N900 and HD2. I bought my N900 about 2 yrs ago. It's a great phone and hardware at that time. But now can't compete with newer processors. But still I love my N900 and it has better cellular signal reception than HD2. Comes with front camera and it works great with Skype over 3G or WiFi. But only problem is Nokia abandoned that great device. (but Nokia gave me a great customer service and replaced my phone to new one after warranty period)
Because of lack of support and apps I decided to get a Android phone and week and half ago I bought my HTC HD2. Tested it for couple of days and flashed Android. I'm happy with it.

Didn't read everything through....
DO NOT EVEN think about Nokia N900 If anything goes wrong with the phone.... yer on your own. Nokia has the worst customer support I know.
Example: My son owns N900... USB/Charging port went bad, got un-soldered...
What do you know..... Called and emailed whoever I could, to get the motherboard....I'm paying customer, I do not ask for freebies,,,,,, What happened... NOTHING!!! No one even moved the finger to help.... Ended up with buying external charger and couple of batteries....And that's the company trying to lead the world in cellphone technology.... NEVER EVER NOKIA in my house!!!!!
I saw this last post and it made me happy. At least Nokia USA treated me nicely. My phone was almost 2 years old and few weeks ago noticed cellular signal drop when I press the phone or if phone is in my pocket. I contacted Nokia customer service even my phone is out of warranty (it came with one year warranty). Had to communicate couple of times back and forth with customer service and then they asked me to send a phone for repair. I told then I'm not spending any more money on that phone. Then they said, they will make a exception and repair it as under warranty. They even provided free shipping labels to send it. Within 5 days after they received it got a email saying they are replacing my phone and it's on the way. I couldn't wait to see how the replacement is. Finally I got it and... OMG it was a brand new phone and only thing wasn't there was a battery which I didn't send them.
Now I have brand new N900 and HTC HD2
I would buy another Nokia phone only if they come up with well know OS such as Android. I don't trust any software they start.

Now that is not true. The HD2 distorts far too easily where as the SGS doesn't, plus with the new custom kernels with Voodoo sound. It can easily out do the HD2 for audio quality, call quality is in the HD2 favour however...

I just sold a sealed and unopened hd2 on ebay for $350, although after ebay, paypal, and shipping charges I'm only making $300. Not bad for a year and half old phone.
Thinking back though, it's only been a little more than a year since hd2 was released on tmous. It feels much longer though...due to the fast refresh of phones now days. In the late 90s, people stick with their phones forever really..

If you're just about to purchase one, this is the one you want with the pent core Tegra 3, Transformer Prime.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...bolsp-app06-24?id=1218450204286&skuId=4038674
If you still want to be budget conscious then go with the a500 now. I've seen it as cheap as $350 here in the expensive great white north. If you want the Prime with a full size USB you are looking at $650 for the tablet and the keyboard dock. I'm not sure what we will see from Acer with their next gen tablet but if you want my honest opinion, a quad/pent core tablet isn't needed if you are running an A500 with KJY's ROM
In probably a couple months, about Feb, March latest, I believe Acer will release the A700/A701 series tablets. Quad core.
Will come with ICS.
Price should be online with current models.
The prime looks nice but is still missing the USB port from what I can tell. I guess dev. Support is low right now cuz its new. I was looking to get one to soon but maybe I'll wait til after the holidays.

Personally I wouldn't touch ASUS with a 10 foot pole after they intentionally screwed me on my netbook warranty a couple of years ago. They sent me on a wild goose chase bouncing between email and phone calls for three weeks until the warranty expired and changed the tune immediately to "sorry, warranty expired, go away." I used to buy all Asus products - especially motherboards - before that through my business, so I estimate they've lost at least $20k worth of sales from me since then.
And if I wanted to tote an entire laptop equivalent just to get a full size USB, I'd tote a small laptop. Between the two, the Acer still has my vote based on those two things.
I hear the Toshiba tablet has a full size USB and HDMI out as well, but looking at the pictures it looks a big thicker than the Acer. Haven't personally touched one of them yet.
The two worst complaints you'll hear on the Acer are the poor GPS reception and the screen. Personally I think complaints on the screen are fud. I'm an amateur photographer and love using the Acer to show off my work. GPS on a wifi only tablet is pretty useless anyway IMHO, but that's because the only thing I use GPS for is navigation - which kind of requires data when not at home.

bummer about the mic situation. all i have to say is the current mic records audio quite well. i put it to the test to record some video footage with high spl levels at a race over the weekend and it did very well. zero distortion/clipping with good range. hopefully if a replacement is needed, it's at least as good as the existing mic.

If you check the original post on Reuters (which I think may have been updated recently) you'll find this ban is global, it's not restricted to the Netherlands.

Nokia's co-developed high-amplitude mics retain 10-month exclusivity, HTC has to look elsewhere
Nokia's injunction yesterday has now been made a little more concrete. The Amsterdam district court has apparently handing down a 10-month ban on STMicroelectronics selling its high-amplitude mics to anyone other than the Finnish phone maker. The same dual-membrane microphone is used in both the Lumia 720 and the HTC One, but Nokia (which co-developed and designed the component) had signed a 12-month exclusivity deal with the chipmaker -- a deal that STMicroelectronics apparently though was only six months long.
According to All About Phones NL, the ruling won't halt sales of One devices, with the court stating that HTC was "blameless" and that it couldn't have know about the contract between Nokia and STMicroelectronics. In short, you'll still be able to buy HTC's flagship in the Netherlands with those dual high-amp mics in tow. We've reached out to HTC and Nokia for comment, but it's shaping up to be another supply woe for HTC's new smartphone.

Hah! Early early adopters FTW. :good:
They usually order in big numbers well in advance. The question now is how many they got in advance to be able to supply current HTC ONE orders... If they already received 500K of them or so we should still be good for now.
Grrr, dammit. Still waiting on my order from 9th April...pleeeeeeeease please please let it be an unmodified model, as HTC intended...
Feel bad for HTC, they just keep taking hits when they should be able to just enjoy the success of designing a really great Android phone. Here's hoping it doesn't affect them too adversely - it would be such a shame to have one less competitor in the smartphone race.

It is more than that. Now that they know the chip is the intellectual property of Nokia, I think they may be legally liable if they continue to manufacture the One with that chip. They can ship what they have, but I think they will have to replace that chip before they manufacture any more of them - anywhere, for any market. For them to use the chip in new construction, I think they are opening themselves to lawsuits from Nokia.
I'm not a lawyer, much less an international lawyer, but this makes sense to me. They will ship what they have, but will need to change the design before they build more.
If you read into the story quite deeply, ban is in Netherlands at the moment, will not go further, It will eventually be allowed in Netherlands again, HTC Is not at fault here, They do not have to find a new supplier, the supplier has to change the part slightly, Nokia went a little over the top to be hinest, Its a MIC! Not like they copied the Whole design of the Lumia and software now is it!

The court's decision prevents the microphone from being sold to anyone else other than Nokia, he said. "This has immediate effect and is global in scope, not just in the Netherlands," Young said via email. STMicroelectronics is headquartered in Geneva, but its holding company is registered in Amsterdam.http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...phones_for_HTC_One?taxonomyId=15&pageNumber=1
Nokia does hold a U.S. patent on the microphone which the Netherlands court said doesn't apply in the EU. So expect Nokia to seek an immediate injunction against the sale of the One (because it houses a patent offending component) in the U.S. shortly.
A claim for 'recall' of microphones already delivered however rejected because Nokia itself (in Europe) can not rely on a patent, which is currently only granted in the United States.

Thanks, that is my reading as well. I really do think they are going to have to halt production until the new part is supplied.
I'd be more than willing to compensate the lose of dual membrane mic for a 6Ultrapixel camera Or a microsd slot
This is making my decision tougher. I have a online order on back order (after t mobile effed up my original order) mainly because I want the car dock. However it is delayed further will I get this mic which has clearly improved audio recording quality or a new mic which may not be so good?
So then do I get it from retail store tomorrow which more than likely has this mic but no car dock with it?
It would have all been so much simpler if the original order wasn't cancelled by tmobile.

HTC's target output is 2MM a month. They ran 500K in March and will hit 1.5MM this month and expect to hit full production in May. The mic is on the daughter board which is a major assembly component so I'd imagine they'd have no less than two weeks’ worth and no more than six weeks’ worth which is the typical stock on hand rate for an important component. So that means they'd be able to build 1MM to 3MM more One's before they run out of components. During that time they'd obviously be working on getting a "Plan B" implemented. It took them about four weeks to get the Wi-Fi h/w fix in place for the One X last year so I wouldn't expect the mic replacement to be done any faster. So whether there are stock shortages all depends on how many daughter boards HTC has on hand and if they can implement a new mic in less time than it takes for them to deplete their existing parts with the offending mic on it.
The biggest issue for the U.S. is the potential for an import ban and/or stop-sale. Unlike the EU, Nokia has a patent on the mic here in the U.S. A patent violation is handled by the ITC not the civil courts like an exclusivity violation would be. The ITC are the ones that issued a ban on the One X last year when Apple filed a complaint about the "app-picker" s/w. And unlike civil court, how the patent violating part came to be imported or used is irrelevant so HTC won't be held "blameless" like they were in the EU. The offending part will be banned and it's unfortunate that it's attached to an HTC phone.

The mobile market is fierce, it looks like small companies have no place in it ..
Nokia, motorolla, blackberry ..
Is HTC facing the same grim future ?!

I would hardly call HTC small. Its a failing giant. While the HTC one is a great phone, its probably too late for HTC, just as its too late for Microsoft.

So sad to see how a good company with a great product can not get back into the race. I thought that HTC with the One will have a small revenue but no. Once again it goes under appreciated

The company has had a streak of terrible products for years .. And this year they redeemed themselves with a GREAT phone .. But perhaps it's already too late ..

If you haven't notice, all of the companies that only make cellphones haven't been doing too great (Nokia, HTC, Blackberry, Motorola...etc.), it really hard to compete with these large companies (Samsung, LG, Apple, Asus, Sony...etc.) because even if one of their smartphones doesn't do too great they still got their other products from other segments of the market to bring in revenue. Samsung's domination in the market is concerning though. Its never good to have one company dominating, especially for us consumers.

Its not the end of the world. The HTC One was the first stepping stone down a path of profitability. The HTC One was a success, but with that success you also need to cover the failures (their operating loss would be far greater if the One didn't do well).
With the launch of their next products, and so long as they stick with the positives of the One; improving upon them they will come back to profitability.
Their ship hasn't sailed just yet, Nokia and Blackberry have had abysmal performance for what seems like forever and are only now going the way of the dodo( and Nokia put up one hell of a fight with their devices, just bet on the wrong horse).
While true that many handset makers have other sources of income, they are also potential money pits (TV divisions for nearly all of them are in the toilet). Samsung is essentially the 800lb gorilla. They can design, manufacturer and market devices in a faster manner than the others since they can self produce most of the components as they have all that infrastructure in place. Only way to beat them, is to continually put out a stellar product that does what it should really well and better than the competition. This doesn't just go for HTC, but for any competitor.

I can't speak for HTC but Microsoft is going absolutely no where. It's ridiculous to even compare Microsoft's situation to HTC's. With that, frankly, I don't believe HTC is going anywhere either. They are on a better road right now.

I feel like the ad campaign for the One was quite lacking, especially compared to recent Samsung and Nokia commercials. The One is an amazing device, but (for the average consumer) if they haven't heard their friends talking about it, they're not likely to get it.

This actually makes me kind of sad.
I mean, I really really dont understand why the One is not getting the love by the consumers that it does by all the award titles.
What do the phone sellers do anyway? Shov the S4 up the buyer's throat and make them buy it?
Don't people read reviews on the internet before they head over to the store to buy a device?
The family of my girl is also the typical S4 buyer, where already 3 of them did.
Her brother got the S4 and had craploads of problems with it, he could have bought the S3 for that matter, he said.
I came in with my HTC One and showed all of them my device was superiour in every freakin way.
Four months later, the mother AND the sister are walking around with the S4 too...
I mean, WHAT THE HELL? Dont they listen?
Ah well, as long as HTC does not fall and the support for the device stops, I'm happy with it.
I've had the S2 for two years, and I were pretty satisfied. But every time I pick up my One, I get this "wow" factor.
I find myself just holding and watching the device, being amazed about the build quality, it just has no competitors in those terms.
Things will get worse before they get better in anything!
Beleive me I have given up smoking and my lungs feel worse than when i was smoking lol! They will however get better!
the One is a great basis to start on and if they keep churning out iphone killers like this, they will be going in the right direction eventually but it takes time! :good:
I wonder if things would be different if they added a physical home button.

Sadly, it wasn't. Success is measured in sales and it grossly underperformed HTC's own estimates as measured by them reporting earnings below their own guidance in both Q2 and Q3; the two quarters where the One should have made a difference. They botched the One's launch and have also botched the Mini's launch. Because of production problems with the latter's casing they can only produce 200K per month. So now comes the Max which is selling for more than the N3 in China where HTC appears to be launching it first. It's got a .2" larger display and appears to be huge and heavy in comparison. HTC's finally starting to attack merging markets (which they should have done two years ago) but price is the biggest driver in those markets and HTC's components costs are now higher than their competitors due to their erosion in volume. Analysts' have a target price on their stock of NTD 100 which is shamefully low. When the stock nears that price someone will acquire HTC; most likely one of the Chinese phone makers.
The One was their last chance for a self-driven turnaround and in spite of it being a fabulous phone, HTC's best to-date, it was too little too late.
HTC has never advertised their products on TV enough in the US market, Samsung is on TV all the time. Also their reps get all the best in-store display space and have signs all over the stores. Advertisements sell the products.
Most mobile customers have never even heard of HTC.

The simple fact of the matter is that Samsung outspend them on marketing 10-1, not just this year but last. It is a matter of Samsung having so many irons in the fire. They are so diversified in so many areas that with slack in one area of their businesses they can push in another area. HTC have never had the resources to compete in the area of "mind share". They are singularly focused which is a bad thing. They grew exponentially but when Samsung got serious they simply outspent HTC, coupled with HTC missteps. Heavens, Samsung outspend Apple 3-1.
I really like my HTC One - the best phone I have had by a big margin. However, I do not see how they can arrest the attrition in their business without much bigger money behind them. As it stands, their margins are shrinking drastically. The only real hope for HTC is I believe with a "merger" (polite for takeover) by probably another Asian company. There is no such thing in this business as a "niche" cell phone manufacturer. R&D, marketing etc cost money and without economies of scale it is almost impossible to make good money and have good products.
I have been using HTC phones since VZW started selling them and feel that the One and DNA were the two best phones they ever made and neither ever got the advertising they deserved. I really hate to see them
fold up but I realize they don't have the resources to continue much longer. They can't fill the orders for the One or the One Mini. Ran out of the metal housings.

i read an article about HTC being aproached by microsoft. if that happens im turning oppo for sure
Windows phones are not selling now so that wouldn't help HTC.
They need to be bought out by a company with deep pockets that knows how to advertise.

Enjoy your last HTC device guys. lol
on a side note i was already thinking of switching to Apple iphone. Yeepee. So excited.
Poor production volumn, too high pricing, too late release date are the reasons.
