A500 or Transformer - Acer Iconia A500

I have a skyrocket now and was looking to get a tablet...I'm leaning more to the Iconia mainly cuz of the USB connector and HDMI out. Anything else I should know like what to look for or should I wait for a newer version? Thanks for any help.

If you're just about to purchase one, this is the one you want with the pent core Tegra 3, Transformer Prime.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...bolsp-app06-24?id=1218450204286&skuId=4038674

If you still want to be budget conscious then go with the a500 now. I've seen it as cheap as $350 here in the expensive great white north. If you want the Prime with a full size USB you are looking at $650 for the tablet and the keyboard dock. I'm not sure what we will see from Acer with their next gen tablet but if you want my honest opinion, a quad/pent core tablet isn't needed if you are running an A500 with KJY's ROM

In probably a couple months, about Feb, March latest, I believe Acer will release the A700/A701 series tablets. Quad core.
Will come with ICS.
Price should be online with current models.

The prime looks nice but is still missing the USB port from what I can tell. I guess dev. Support is low right now cuz its new. I was looking to get one to soon but maybe I'll wait til after the holidays.

Personally I wouldn't touch ASUS with a 10 foot pole after they intentionally screwed me on my netbook warranty a couple of years ago. They sent me on a wild goose chase bouncing between email and phone calls for three weeks until the warranty expired and changed the tune immediately to "sorry, warranty expired, go away." I used to buy all Asus products - especially motherboards - before that through my business, so I estimate they've lost at least $20k worth of sales from me since then.
And if I wanted to tote an entire laptop equivalent just to get a full size USB, I'd tote a small laptop. Between the two, the Acer still has my vote based on those two things.
I hear the Toshiba tablet has a full size USB and HDMI out as well, but looking at the pictures it looks a big thicker than the Acer. Haven't personally touched one of them yet.
The two worst complaints you'll hear on the Acer are the poor GPS reception and the screen. Personally I think complaints on the screen are fud. I'm an amateur photographer and love using the Acer to show off my work. GPS on a wifi only tablet is pretty useless anyway IMHO, but that's because the only thing I use GPS for is navigation - which kind of requires data when not at home.

Well, I agree, the display comments, are BS. Ok, it gathers fingerprints. And when you have the beach sun shining directly on it, what display doesn't have issues.
But, GPS works fine with me. No issues. But I agree, how fine do you want a GPS? Military Specs? If ya want military specs, you're hooking up with the wrong sats baby.

Asus products
MY SPOUSE AND i owned a local retail/repair computer business.
Also recently we had a asus netbook there repair facility is here in our city. the camera quit working on the netbook . we had to mail it UPS SPECIAL SHIPPING to a facility that is less then 2 miles from me.. and it took 2 weeks to get it back... then two days after we got it back.. the screen cracked.. They said it was nothing to do with them.. but we know they had it taken apart..
very lousy tech support.
very horrible warranty support..
I would not know if acer is much better but i have been told they are. I do know HP ROCKS WHEN IT COMES to customer support .. but they dont make a tablet in the price range and not one with android...
what a loss of income for them..

Just don't pay full price for an a500 with all the new ones on the horizon. I got my 8gb for $230 not long ago. Sales like that will be more common after xmas.

Thanks everyone. I do appreciate it. I don't want to make this into a this vs that thread but more of a personnel experience being I love androind now ever since I got my atria and now the skyrocket. I didn't know if someone had both and could give a "more useful" opinion. I have a laptop and never touch it. I had the attic with the lapdock....never touched it LOL. I'm just looking for a new toy and I'm a flashaholic which I don't like to admit in public. Thanks again.

Ummm nothing personal ER, but you might want to Google HP tech support problems.
The ABSOLUTE worst reputation for doing warranty work in the business!
After my last experience with their lack of "wanting to cover a warranty issue", I'll never purchase another HP device as long as I live!
I'm in the process of developing this site as we speak lol

I have had my a500 fora couple of weeks now and have no regrets. Easy to root and flash roms. I was able to swoop mine up for $230.

That's a bad idea. Make her buy the xoom a case as the present!
Anyways congrats on the op and welcome to our ship lol

sell it to her as a replacement laptop that you can both use and it'll mean less time on the current laptop/pc - it also will save on energy costs as it lasts longer and you can take it away and watch movies etc. on it.... also it can be used in place of a DVD/Bluray/VHS as you can hook it up via a HDMI cable.........
best way to tell your wife is to get her a tablet also, duh!

I'm waiting for a Fuji X100 to be delivered. I am getting away with it by getting my wife new dining room chairs. I have to plan these things well in advance. But it does save me grief.
Congrats, the sales of the Xoom weren't as good as I thought they would be launch date; am glad sales are picking up bc it is a pretty cool device.
Best of the luck with the wife. I just bought my wife a G Tablet when I bought my Xoom. Seems to have worked wonders for me.
My problem was that my wife had bought me a Nook Color for Xmas last year. I rooted it and installed numerous ROMs but it didn't run quite as stable as I'd loved it to. So I got dragged into the Honeycomb tablet world and ordered my Xoom when Motorola had the 25% off glitch. Saved me two hundred bucks! I told my wife about the purchase when I held the device in my hands. BAAD IDEA! The only things that kept her from ripping my head off were the 25% discount and that over time she realized that the Nook has major shortcomings. But what do they say: It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission? Anyway, my wife now uses the Nook and is fairly happy. She even took it well when I told her about my interest in the ASUS Transformer. She understood the benefits of having the full keyboard, better screen etc.
Bottom line: Just tell her and then get her something nice to make up for not telling her earlier!

Is the Xoom really worth buying right now? I love the sound from the unit but...

The unit itself has been on the market since February and its had its shortcomings...
It seems whenever I go to the store to play with tablets they all have their faults...however, the Xoom just feels like a real slate (great build quality)
My gf got me a Toshiba Thrive for my birthday. I didnt do any research before (testing them out in person) and I was really unimpressed with the build quality so we returned it.
Asus Transformer has great screen and decent build quality, but the sound is TERRIBLE. The IdeaPad was pretty nice as well - but the display was dimmer then the Xoom and its build quality was so so (lots of flex in a tablet - no go for me)
My real struggle is that the Xoom is still $499. It really is worth more like $449 and at that price I would get one.
Thoughts? Opinions? Please share.
You get what you pay for. If you want an android tablet, the xoom is still the standard. If you can wait until the fall there should be more options.
Shop around. They are turning up for $399 from time to time in some places.

I just bought one a week ago. It is one of the best purchases I made. Price is always gonna be an issue because if all the tablets drop in price you'restill gonna be asking whether its worth the extra money. I love my Xoom... if I had had $800 when they first came out I would have found it worth it then.

Yes, for my money, it's also the best tech investment I've made in years.
Thanks for the replies so far guys!
Ultimately these tablets will always be getting better - like cell phones.
But after a year or two im sure I can get something else if I really wanted it. At work I have an IPad 2 just for document purposes and display presentations and I dont like it at all.
Just wanted to see where everyone stands and if they are happy with the purchase...you do get what you pay for and the Xoom seems to have fantastic build quality with no flex.
I paid $399 for mine and I love it. I would deffinetly consider worth it for another $100 if you cant find it for that. I love it more than any device I own, including my phone. I even have my texts forwarded via bluetooth to my Xoom and use it for texting. I'm a student working part time minimum wage retail job so I don't have much money, yet I still don't regret dishing out the $400 for it.
Cheers!
I picked mine up for $399 refurbished from woot and I love it. As others have mentioned, there have been a few places to have them new for that price, but I would definitely be willing to pay the extra $100 if there's not a place to find it for $400. I was always a little skeptical about how useful a tablet could be but the techie in me took over and I kind of impulse bought it when it showed up on woot. I have to say that I'm very glad I made the purchase. I've been using it a lot more than I anticipated and I love it. I prefer the design and feel of the Xoom more than the other available tablets and from what I've seen, it has the best development so far. Though it's only been about 1 month or 2, I'd still pick the Xoom over any other tablet available.
The biggest question would come down to whether or not you think you'd use a tablet. If you think you'd use it, then I'd definitely recommend it, even at the $500 price tag.
Still you can get one on ebay for like 250-300 if you don't want to pay 400-500$.

What I also forgot to mention...
My GF bought me a Thrive and we returned it. Build quality was subpar - not stylish nor ergonomic at all.
NO Development community, although the tablet is new and that is to be expected.
Xoom seems to have custom ROMS and Kernels - although Im more of a purist anyway (AOSP on Phone) So I would probably be more interested in Kernel Dev than anything else.
I paid 750 for mine when it first came out. I'm happy with my purchase. Custom kernals and mods make it even better...and yeah,I could've waited and paid less...what's the fun in that?
I picked up a Xoom from Newegg last Thursday and I must say this thing is awesome. Newegg is currently selling them for $479 with free shipping and a $40 Newegg giftcard.

yes its worth it.
i started with a gtablet just to see if i would use it. wound up using it more than my desktop or notebook. i used the gtab for about 3-4 months
the screen on the gtablet is horrible. so i decided to buy a hc tablet with a better screen. my first choice was the acer iconia onsale at target. after 2 swapouts due to faulty hardware i bit the bullet and got the xoom. that was a week ago.
it blows any other tablet i tried out the water. i so do not regret it.

If you have an android phone you may be able to bluetooth tether it to your xoom.
If you google "xoom tether droid" there's a how to several results down from androidcentral (since I can't link)
Android phones with Gingerbread installed support WiFi Hotspot tethering. You can turn your phone in an access point for your Xoom tablet.

lol I actually did , she couldn't get the keyboard to pop up, I dunno if she bought the xoom, but last year I helped a lady buy a Toshiba laptop and I dont even work at best buy
don't think the sales man was happy I talked her out of having the geek squad making her back up disks for a extra 75 bucks ... I thought that was ridiculous of best buy to rip people off like that so i wrote down the instructions for her on how to do it her self for nothing lol

Just introducing my self.

Recently got a TF101. Total surprise. My mom [52] called me a few week ago and asked me to start researching tablets. She kept insisting that they were for her, but being I'm 29, and in the XYZ generation she wanted me to do the research for her.
So last Friday my wife and i went to meet her at our local best buy, and i said "we'll lets go get your transformer" and she said is that the one you recommend and i said yes it is. So we went picked it out, paid for it, and she handed me the bag and said "merry Christmas, my Acer Iconia is at home. Still in the shrink wrap".
So Christmas magic comes though.
I'm not new to XDA or Androids, but i just wanted to drop a line and say hi, and if you see me lurking around, you'll know why.
Welcome and congrats on the new Transformer
Haha, that is really cool.
Welcome XD
Damn it, I want mine now! lol
I think I've been able to persuade the wife to let me have it Christmas eve with the reason of, it needs 8 hours charge before use
I was playing with the displays at best buy when a woman asked a worker there which tablet he'd recommend. He told her the ipad 2. She said her husband doesn't like it because there's no memory expansion. I interrupted and told her about the transformer and the upcoming prime. Turned out the sales guy had no clue about the prime or even the 1st tf. Probably an iFan. She went ahead and asked me about each one of the tablets on display. I'm actually one of the few people who have been through several tablets and know what's in what. After our conversation, she told me she'd definitely get the transformer for her husband. She said she'd talk to him to see if he wanted the 101 or the prime.
I just think its unacceptable to have a sales guy standing there who knows nothing about tablets other than the ipad.

Do you honestly think Best Buy salesmen are interested in selling products? They only want one thing, to sell you warranties and installations so that they can keep their job. Best Buy doesn't hire technically competent employees because if they did, they wouldn't sell as many $80 HDMI cables and rip off warranties.

It's really funny you mention that. I went to my local BB to buy a HDMI cable and they tried to sell me a Monster branded cable and i told them no. I wanted the cheapest thing they had. Since all HDMIs are the same. And it was forty dollars. Still a rip off so i told him I was going to buy them from Monoprice. He insisted that i wouldn't find one cheaper than that. Needless to say he was surprised when i showed him an invoice for 4 x 10 foot HDMI cables with a total price less than 20.00.
And i know for a fact that if the don't get x amount of people to sign up for the best buy buyers card per month they get wrote up.
That's a cool way to get a transforming Christmas tablet!
I know what y'all mean about the HDMI cables, every time I've looked at something like that in a Best Buy, it's always "WHAT THE ****!? I'd rather wait on the USPS."

If it makes you feel any better, there's a near-certainty that the sales guy knows absolutely nothing about the iPad either -- he just pushes that one because experience has taught him that being the most popular, it's the easiest to sell.
The salesman at big-box stores who knows even the vaguest facts about the products he's selling is a very rare beast indeed, and Best Buy in particular like to boil their products down to about 3-4 key specs at the most. As far as Best Buy corporate is concerned, anything that's not printed on their shelf card for the product is simply an opportunity to confuse customers and lose the sale -- if it's not printed on the card, they'd rather you didn't know it.
During a recent Technology purchase at a big box store, I asked about I/O ports. I was referred to their technical expert. His solution to answering my problem was to log into the store computer and give me access to the web to look it up myself. Although doing it this way assured me I got the right answer, I had to question the title technical expert.
Aich is why I make sure of data signal on store and keep a barcode scanner handy, but what does this havea to do with the OP?

Just bought the TF101

Well I decided to bite the bullet and pick up a 32GB TF101 at BB for $399. I was VERY unhappy with my Acer a500 wifi performance so one of the first things I did when I got home was to compare the two side by side and what a difference.
The Asus was reporting Excellent signal strength at 72Mbps and the Acer was reporting Good strength at 19 Mbps. The icing on the cake was when I fired up wifi analyzer and the Asus reported -45dB signal strength and the Acer was around -68dB.
That is a HUGE difference which just confirms to me that my wifi really sucked. I had trouble getting wifi in places that I shouldn't have trouble. Maybe I had a bad a500, but it seems to be a widespread issue and I bet some of it is because of the aluminum back cover (just like the Prime which ironically has the same issue).
Anyway, so now the question that I have is that I have read about the backlight bleeding in the TF101 and I do have it on the one that I picked up today. It is almost dead center (width-wise) and right on the bottom so you can see it pretty easy since the status bar is always black. So my question is, should I return it and try and get another one to see if it is better or do they all have varying degrees of light bleed?
I did mine- got one without any noticeable bleed (noticeable being the key word in the TF screen dept, they seem to be plagued by it and goodintentions will chime in to tell you that all ipad2s have it WORSE lol)
Highly recommend getting an ipad2. That's all I gotta say.
What did I tell you? LOL

I lurk on on apple forums a lot. Trust me, all ipad2's have backlight bleeding. The thing is ipad2 users either don't notice or don't care. A lot of them have even stated after they read about it and checked their own ipads that they saw it had massive light bleeds like mofos, but they still didn't care.
In fact, the only people who care so much about light bleeds are android users. What's ironic is before there was an android device with ips display android users were whining about the lack of ips display on android tablets. And now that there are ips display android tablets android users are now whining about light bleeds.
I'm not saying if you have massive light bleeds that you should live with it. I'm also not saying that you should live with any light bleeds if it bothers you that much. It's just an obseration that ipads have light bleeds like mofos but ipad users don't seem to care that much.
But anyway, to the OP, since you will probably need intensive psychological treatment for the small amount of light bleeds that you have, you should exchange your unit for another one. Chances are the next one will also have light bleeds. Keep exchanging it. I'm sure after 10 times or so may be you'll get lucky and get a unit that have no light bleeds.
PS - I've worked with over a dozen TF's and they all had light bleeds to some extend. None very bad. A few barely noticeable, but they are there. I wish you the best of luck in your quest for a light bleed free TF.
Where do you find the time to lurk in apple forums when you lurk in here so often? lol
I am not really looking for a bleed-free unit, but when I booted it up for the first time that is the first thing that caught my eye. I think what makes it jump out is that there is very minimal bleed anywhere else on the screen and then there is this one spot about an inch wide that is pretty noticeable.
And it happens to be right on the black bar along the bottom so you always see it. I am a little afraid to swap it out and then get one worse, but I might take the chance. If this spot was along the top of the unit there is no question that I wouldn't even really worry about it.

First, I am not sure where you can get the Prime for $450 out the door (I live in NY state so virtually everywhere charges tax, the cheapest I have seen it is $500). Second, the only reason I got the TF101 to begin with was because my Acer had extremely poor wifi strength and that is the same issue that plagues the Prime (along with basically no GPS in the Prime since it doesn't work). So assuming I could get it for $450 out the door, why would I even pay $50 more for a unit that has WAY more problems than the TF101?
Please don't give me the whole "I have a Prime and mine is fine" comment that almost all Prime owners give. It is well documented, and reflected in reviews on most websites, the the Prime has some pretty widespread issues.

Then why worry about it? If you don't see any anomaly's don't ask for pictures of anomalies to see what they look like because then you will most likely find some. If it looks fine to you, just let it go.

I just don't understand why people still insist on taking their chances with the Prime at the moment when it is pretty well documented that the QA for the unit is terrible and that Wifi/GPS/BT are pretty screwed up.
It seems like the Prime was a science experiment and a way to push the Tegra3 to the market first. I think people are too infatuated with having the "fastest" tablet, but what good is a tablet that doesn't get good, consistent wifi (unless you are buying it strictly for games)?
EDIT: I am curious to see where he found the Prime for $450 out the door though because at that price I may have actually tried it first since I paid $432 after taxes for the TF101. I did have $125 in BB gift cards though which is why I kind of preferred to get it from BB.

Then why worry about it? If you don't see any anomaly's don't ask for pictures of anomalies to see what they look like because then you will most likely find some. If it looks fine to you, just let it go.

It does look fine!
I think you did very well in buying the 101... The only thing that can put people off is the thickness. But the back is fantastic...

Ha, normally I do too. I mainly use BB to physically look at stuff I plan to buy and then buy elsewhere. But, I got a bunch of BB gift cards for my birthday and Christmas so I had to use them on something.
And with the 32GB being on sale this week at BB it was the best price around for a new unit anyway.

Smart man.
I picked up a used (mint) TF101 w/keyboard dock locally for $350. Tossed in a 16 gig card and I'm off to the races. Love it and my Prime was returned to Amazon immediately. Can't wait for ICS!

Yea, I am definitely happy with the TF101. I just swapped mine out at Best Buy tonight and there is very minimal backlight bleeding on this new one and looks much better.
The wifi signal strength is like night and day compared to my Acer that it is replacing. I was tempted to get the Prime because of the specs, but it definitely has the same issue that my Acer does in terms of wifi strength so it isn't worth it for me because I want a unit that I don't have to worry about sitting on top of a router to connect to the internet.

I will now too considering their shady practice of adding extensions to the product code for items sold on black friday so they cannot be exchanged if defective with the non black friday equivalent..yeah, that right there is sum b...s....

Should I get this

I know there had been a couple of these threads so my apologies ahead of time. I an looking to buy my son a tablet for the holidays. In my research I was drawn to this one for its stock experience, specs, expandable storage, stylus, and gaming. Problem I am having is all the threads taking about cracks and poor WiFi. The tablet will almost exclusively be used in my house and mainly in the room with the router. My son is only 7 so he is not ready for some of the more intense games but I like the idea that he can grow with this and that the specs will carry over for a while. My plan would be to use my ouya controller at first then work my way to buying the nvidia controller if he is playing enough on it to warrant
I can get him a nexus 7 for $120 less or a galaxy tab 8.4 pro for $50 less but both have their shortcomings. I guess my question is are the complaints a vocal minority or is this tablet a great idea not truly realized? Thanks in advance for any thoughts
It's true the wifi is not top notch, but it works fine anyway. It simply does not have the best range it could possibly have. It's not a dealbreaker for me.
Cracked edges - no problems here, and I think this is a minority problem.
Overall I am pleased with the tablet. The battery life is OK. I love the stylus and the fact that I can stream games from my PC. Just the other day I was playing FIFA 14 from my PC with an XBOX 360 PC controller connected with an USB OTG cable.
My advice: go for it. The tablet is solid.
cheers

I have just recently purchased the Shield and this was a unit that was a RMA replacement that the seller got when he sent his back because of the issue with cracks. I have been completely happy with the unit thus far and the fact that it is near stock is a huge benefit. I also have a Nexus 7 (2012) that my daughter uses and while it works well for her (8 years old) it doesn't have quickness that the Nvidia does. As for WiFi I have had no issues at all with mine, I know others here have but I have not.
I also have a couple of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3's in the house and they are garbage, I won't buy another Samsung product as I have had nothing but trouble with them.
Also in the coming weeks if you keep a close eye on Craigslist you can probably find someone selling a near new Nvidia as the lemmings part with them to go get the new Nexus 9 or the latest piece from Apple. That's what I did and saved quite a bit off retail.

I hear you, I am trying to low ball someone on Craigslist who says he just picked up an I pad air. Don't think he is biting but it's worth a shot.

I just got mine (LTE model) last night and seriously, I have never seen a tablet fly like this one does! It is beautiful, feels great in the hand, WIFI and LTE work great and it is just a pleasure to use. I'm not a serious gamer but really wanted it for media, art-making and everything else I can do with a fast and sleek android tablet, including some light gaming. I am not at all disappointed.
Rooting with towelroot was super simple and didn't require unlocking. It is sweeeet!

Calm down he was asking for 325 for a bundle but I dont want half of it. I offered 250 he can take it or leave it. If no one else offers anything he can choose if it is worth it to him. I sell a ton on Craigslist and can make my own decisions on if I like an offer or not.

Well folks can criticize low balling if they like but in my case I went low on a WiFi model and was very nice and respectful in my language when I made it. He politely turned me down but I was patient and after I noticed it was still listed (and re-listed) two weeks later I contacted him again and restated my offer with a kind note that "with Apple and Google releasing new devices it may be difficult to move a lesser known device like this at the price you're asking." He emailed me back within minutes asking if I could come up $20 and he'd throw in the 64GB MicroSD he bought for it. I kindly agreed since I was going to pay at least $30 for one on Amazon anyway.
My point is there is nothing wrong with low balling if you are respectful about it. If the person refuses and gets more for their device then great, many times they won't but if you're a d*ck they won't even take a low ball offer seriously.

As with any transaction there is a worth to the purchaser. I only said my offer was low ball because I would be getting the tablet, case, controller, and 32gb SD for $325 which is a great value retail. I did not intend on buying the remote, don't want the nvidia case, and have an SD. So to me I am buying a used tablet for the same price as retail but getting allot more in the end. I run the risk of the potential that the unit has issues and the struggle of getting nvidia to make good not being the original purchaser.
