Well I decided to bite the bullet and pick up a 32GB TF101 at BB for $399. I was VERY unhappy with my Acer a500 wifi performance so one of the first things I did when I got home was to compare the two side by side and what a difference.
The Asus was reporting Excellent signal strength at 72Mbps and the Acer was reporting Good strength at 19 Mbps. The icing on the cake was when I fired up wifi analyzer and the Asus reported -45dB signal strength and the Acer was around -68dB.
That is a HUGE difference which just confirms to me that my wifi really sucked. I had trouble getting wifi in places that I shouldn't have trouble. Maybe I had a bad a500, but it seems to be a widespread issue and I bet some of it is because of the aluminum back cover (just like the Prime which ironically has the same issue).
Anyway, so now the question that I have is that I have read about the backlight bleeding in the TF101 and I do have it on the one that I picked up today. It is almost dead center (width-wise) and right on the bottom so you can see it pretty easy since the status bar is always black. So my question is, should I return it and try and get another one to see if it is better or do they all have varying degrees of light bleed?
I did mine- got one without any noticeable bleed (noticeable being the key word in the TF screen dept, they seem to be plagued by it and goodintentions will chime in to tell you that all ipad2s have it WORSE lol)
Highly recommend getting an ipad2. That's all I gotta say.
What did I tell you? LOL

I lurk on on apple forums a lot. Trust me, all ipad2's have backlight bleeding. The thing is ipad2 users either don't notice or don't care. A lot of them have even stated after they read about it and checked their own ipads that they saw it had massive light bleeds like mofos, but they still didn't care.
In fact, the only people who care so much about light bleeds are android users. What's ironic is before there was an android device with ips display android users were whining about the lack of ips display on android tablets. And now that there are ips display android tablets android users are now whining about light bleeds.
I'm not saying if you have massive light bleeds that you should live with it. I'm also not saying that you should live with any light bleeds if it bothers you that much. It's just an obseration that ipads have light bleeds like mofos but ipad users don't seem to care that much.
But anyway, to the OP, since you will probably need intensive psychological treatment for the small amount of light bleeds that you have, you should exchange your unit for another one. Chances are the next one will also have light bleeds. Keep exchanging it. I'm sure after 10 times or so may be you'll get lucky and get a unit that have no light bleeds.
PS - I've worked with over a dozen TF's and they all had light bleeds to some extend. None very bad. A few barely noticeable, but they are there. I wish you the best of luck in your quest for a light bleed free TF.
Where do you find the time to lurk in apple forums when you lurk in here so often? lol
I am not really looking for a bleed-free unit, but when I booted it up for the first time that is the first thing that caught my eye. I think what makes it jump out is that there is very minimal bleed anywhere else on the screen and then there is this one spot about an inch wide that is pretty noticeable.
And it happens to be right on the black bar along the bottom so you always see it. I am a little afraid to swap it out and then get one worse, but I might take the chance. If this spot was along the top of the unit there is no question that I wouldn't even really worry about it.

First, I am not sure where you can get the Prime for $450 out the door (I live in NY state so virtually everywhere charges tax, the cheapest I have seen it is $500). Second, the only reason I got the TF101 to begin with was because my Acer had extremely poor wifi strength and that is the same issue that plagues the Prime (along with basically no GPS in the Prime since it doesn't work). So assuming I could get it for $450 out the door, why would I even pay $50 more for a unit that has WAY more problems than the TF101?
Please don't give me the whole "I have a Prime and mine is fine" comment that almost all Prime owners give. It is well documented, and reflected in reviews on most websites, the the Prime has some pretty widespread issues.

Then why worry about it? If you don't see any anomaly's don't ask for pictures of anomalies to see what they look like because then you will most likely find some. If it looks fine to you, just let it go.

And some, like myself, would say that you're a fool. I paid $250 for a brand new TF101 last May. I plan on buying the prime, but not for more than $250.

I just don't understand why people still insist on taking their chances with the Prime at the moment when it is pretty well documented that the QA for the unit is terrible and that Wifi/GPS/BT are pretty screwed up.
It seems like the Prime was a science experiment and a way to push the Tegra3 to the market first. I think people are too infatuated with having the "fastest" tablet, but what good is a tablet that doesn't get good, consistent wifi (unless you are buying it strictly for games)?
EDIT: I am curious to see where he found the Prime for $450 out the door though because at that price I may have actually tried it first since I paid $432 after taxes for the TF101. I did have $125 in BB gift cards though which is why I kind of preferred to get it from BB.

Ha, normally I do too. I mainly use BB to physically look at stuff I plan to buy and then buy elsewhere. But, I got a bunch of BB gift cards for my birthday and Christmas so I had to use them on something.
And with the 32GB being on sale this week at BB it was the best price around for a new unit anyway.

Yea, I am definitely happy with the TF101. I just swapped mine out at Best Buy tonight and there is very minimal backlight bleeding on this new one and looks much better.
The wifi signal strength is like night and day compared to my Acer that it is replacing. I was tempted to get the Prime because of the specs, but it definitely has the same issue that my Acer does in terms of wifi strength so it isn't worth it for me because I want a unit that I don't have to worry about sitting on top of a router to connect to the internet.

im debating on taking my xoom back.im about 50/50 on it right now. i think that the 10 inch is just to big to be as usefull as my rooted honeycombed color nook for what i need. my question is, if i take it back to verizon do i have to pay the contract termination fee if it is within the 14 day period?
You wouldnt pay an ETF. However, i think there is a $70 restocking fee. I would keep the Xoom tho, its going to get so much better..There is no such thing as too big
I would call to make sure, but I was told when I bought mine, it would be a $70 restocking fee if returned within 14 days. Even the subsidized/contract one.

I have the NC on HC too but it is too buggy still. Once I held the Xoom in my hands (at the local Costco, not my own ) I realized what a huge difference in performance can be seen with the right hardware! But I'm with you - not sure how I'll handle both, the NC and the Xoom.
I am debating returning mine as well. I understand Best Buy is not charging any restocking fee, so that is encouraging. The hardware and software are both buggy, at least on mine. Given the premium for the device, it is not worth all the bugs, particularly the hardware ones.
I am leaning towards returning for an iPad 2, if it released tomorrow. I really prefer Android over iOS, especially the widgets, but unless the price comes down, the iPad may be the way to go.
im still pretty much bug free. i do like the device, but just not sure if i would prefer to wait for a 7 inch one

There are rumors floating around the net saying that Apple's big card up their sleeve is that they will actually release the IPad 2 directly after announcing it. Which, if you think about it, would have the ability to effectively kill the Xoom for a lot of people. I for one, hope that I can withstand the IPad 2 and wait for the WiFi only Xoom. It would have been smart for Motorola to release the wifi before the IPad 2, I guess we'll see.
What is the point of all of these types of posts exactly? Nobody cares if you're returning or thinking of returning your Xoom.
Questions about ETF's, return periods, and restocking fees are little more than spam on these boards.

I read that too. They've stopped shipments of the old iPad and we all know what that means. I read on one website where they are predicting that the low end wifi model will only be $399. Hope it's true... I might pick one up for my fiance at that price and hopefully it will force some of these other manufacturers to bring down the prices.
Guess I'm the opposite of OP I want a bigger tablet to replace my laptop.

Hi XDA,
I'm currently staying in Manhattan for another 3 weeks before returning back to New Zealand and wondering if any stores could be expected to repeat the Black Friday (or was it Cyber Monday?) sale price ($299?) for the Eee Pad? Or any tablet for that matter? Is this the done this time of year or have I missed out?
Cheers
January time there will be some for sure, with the release of the Prime.
I picked mine up from Futureshop for $299 on Black Friday.... Looked around today hoping it might be the same price for one for my wife, but nothing... Prime is still listed as pre-order here (Canada) (vs 'sold out') so it looks like they have no reason to drop the price until the Prime comes out. The salesman actually told me to wait... considering they are usually pushy and commission-driven I'll take that as a sign. Either way $299 seems to be the 'target' price for now...
Will post if I see anything...
Happy hunting!

at least they have a good return policy... if it goes on sale in the next little while you can always get the difference... I actually bought two iconias and the transformer at the same time as they were constantly running out of stock. I test drove them all and keep kept checking for sales but because of GPS issues with the iconias I kept the transformer instead (though I did like the build and connectivity of the Acer better. aside from the better screen I also find the transformer to be slightly smoother as well.)

What's the law about selling a used item as new in the US? Just curious...
Aren't the returns supposed to be returned back to the manufacturer to get refurbished and sold as such?
i'm debating between the htc flyer and the n7, but my main concern with the n7 is all the issues that have been discussed and people having had to do 3 RMAs, etc. So is it still worth it?
I'm not sure what the defect rate of the current Nexus 7s are now, but as far as alternatives go, the HTC Flyer is completely outclassed with its single core processor. If you're considering alternatives, you should really look for something with a dual core processor, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7".

If you liked the Nook Color, why not consider the Nook Tablet?
EDIT: I would also take people's complaints here about "defects" with a grain of salt. Yes, of course there are always going to be real manufacturing defects in a product line, but geeks tend to be more...particular than the average consumer. If you're really concerned about it go to a retail store and open it right there to make sure it's to your liking. At least that way too you can return the same day if needed.
Do it. Eventually you'll get a good one, hopefully on the first try.

That would be the wrong move. Sure it goes from a single to dual core processor. But your left with a tablet that is so locked down, and has practically no development. Vs. the color which was pretty cool in its day and has tons of mods. I was very dissapointed after I got a nook tab for my girlfriend.
There is a nook app, and a kindle app. There's no reason to have a nook or kindle after the release of the Nexus. IMO.

Coming from a single core 7 inch tablet, I can say that going with the Nexus 7 is the better choice.
The issues people have been having is due to their very meticulous nature.
Screen separation? There's a guide to fix that. You can send it to Asus to get it fixed, but you can spend 15 mins to fix it yourself.

Well i happen to be one of those meticulous natured people, when i buy something i expect at the very least that it would be in the condition i paid money for. So once a few more people chime in i might just go ahead and buy from the play store, unless there's somewhere better/cheaper/faster. I checked local close by stores and they are all $250 not including tax yet...for comparison the play store total price is $231.85.

I think I read somewhere that the Galaxy Tab 2 7" is on sale this week at Walmart for $250 with a $50 gc, which brings the net price down to $200 if you want to count the gc as cash. Any reason why you don't like Samsung tablets? You can always load a custom rom if you don't like Touchwiz (which I don't).

As the title states, I had the Sprint version of the HTC Flyer, and I liked it a lot. It was relatively snappy, running Honeycomb 3.2, and I had 32GB onboard and a 32GB microSD card in it, so I could carry around a fair amount of music and movies for airplane rides, etc.
I ended up leaving it on an airplane, and I was dejected for a full week before I decided to pre-order the Nexus 7. I got it through MacMall and it has been pretty solid so far. Very slight raised screen on the left side, but literally 1mm tops, and not noticeable. It's not spongy, but it does give if you press hard on the screen (which I never do). As for Jelly Bean 4.1, it is hands down superior to Honeycomb in every way shape and form, and you can definitely tell the difference in responsiveness with the N7. Loading apps like Netflix, Pulse, Kindle, etc. is at least five times faster on the N7 vs. the HTC, and it should be. Also, I paid $230 for the HTC when it was on sale last year, and while I don't regret that amount paid for it, the $249 (no tax + free shipping) for the N7 is a great deal, assuming you get one in good shape.
I would recommend buying from a local retail store so you can exchange and exchange until you get a good unit. It seems like there are a lot of faulty ones out there, but then again, this is a forum where people are going to go to gripe about their issues, not bask in the glory of their perfectly functioning devices.
Nexus 7, without a doubt.

I'm just not a fan of Samsung stuff in general, I've tried their stuff and read reviews and there is always some issue that has didn't play in their favor, ie: looks, cost, etc...As my signature says I'm an HTC and ASUS fanboy, I guess part of it is I just like the underdogs, like how I like AMD instead of Intel.

Thanks, for the detailed review/personal anecdote. I will wait a bit before buying since it can only get cheaper as time goes on (i hope).

duely noted.
I haven't had a single defect on my tablet. Its beautiful, fast, and priced to change the game. I would not hesitate to buy this tablet, unless you have severe OCD, then I probably wouldn't buy any tablet or electronic device, as you will certainly find something to bother you if you look hard enough.
I also owned the HTC EVO View 4G (HTC Flyer) and sold it before buying the N7. It is lighter, slimmer, faster, better screen, and just all around better.
Don't get the Flyer unless you can get it for $100.

I bought one there a few days ago and had BB adjust the price today.
This tablet is a sleeper currently. Folks seem to just pass by anything that isn't a Nexus, Samsung, or Ipad. I bet the price will soon hit what the new Nexus 7 is going for, I will keep my eyes peeled and get a further adjustment if that happens. Lots of price wars happening with Microsoft and android tablets lately.
Good thought on watching the price and having them adjust for any drop. I grabbed two, one white from my local Best Buy and one black from one across town. I'd been thinking I wanted black since my current/previous tablets have been black (or dark gray in a few cases), but the white one does look pretty slick, so I might try that for once. I'll obviously cancel/return the one I don't keep.

I'm liking it so far. No hot buttons currently and I think it is a sleeper currently for price and quality right now. The Nexus 7 is very good, I have one but 16:10 aspect ratio on a 7 inch is tough for me to tell the truth.
No lag with games, videos don't buffer, web browsing is fine, reading on it is very good. SOLD!!!
Just sold an iPhone 5 I had for $220 so Im waiting for any Christmas sales. Will have about $330 by Christmas so Im just watching:laugh: out for any good deals.
I bought one at BB today myself... Having some drinks waiting on the first 100% Charge.... Returned my Nexus 7 2013 for this puppy.. I think this is the *Perfect* size for a Tablet.

Yeah, I think I'm inclined to agree after playing with it for a few hours. This is a really great device! I rooted it and restored apps and data from my Nook HD+ using TiBu. Very responsive in everything I've thrown at it so far. Great deal at $280 (wish I'd gotten the NewEgg deal earlier this week though!).

LOL I thought I was reading my own post since I too rooted & restored from an HD+ today. Got the Newegg deal BTW.
I just picked one up at the local Best Buy, they do not have any on display. I purchased online for in store pick-up. My wife and I both have LG phones and love them. I'm not done setting the G pad up yet, but loving it so far.

I seen that deal also Wells.. but I rather buy at a Brick & Mortar.. I had a situation where a Asus HD 7 freaked out and looped doing an update to the latest firmware 5 minutes out of the box.. the turn around for refund or replacement would have been over a week if I purchased it through Newegg.. As it was, I just walked it into Walmart and got my Cash back.. So, I for one don't mind at all paying the $30.00 difference to avoid the headache of returning an item such as this should I have an issue.. My unit has fully charged while typing this and I've just powered it up for the 1st time.. and it's FABULOUS..
Thanks for this post! Mine is slated to arrive Tuesday from Best Buy Online. I will contact them today to see if I can get a $20 credit since I paid 299. I posted this in the accessories page ...

you guys might appreciate it as well. So that you don't waste as much time as I have researching official accessories as seen in the hands-on reviews from certain websites, I can assure you that the official accessories like the dock and the quick cover are not yet available in the US even though they appear on the LG US website. I just spent a hell of a lot of time on the phone with LG trying to show them that their own website lists the items complete with full instructions on how to use them. I finally got someone to admit that the products are not available in the United States at this time. I picked up an Asus cover on Amazon that will work with the LG.

Dang. Just realized you posted this yesterday on the 7th. Today is the 8th. I called them anyway and she said there's nothing they can do but you keep an eye on the website because if it drops in price again within the next 30 days they will gladly credit my account. I'm posting this in case anybody else need this information. Thanks for the initial heads up!

Which Asus cover works with the G Pad?
I too ordered one. I missed the Newegg one thought I would just wait one more day lol, one day to late. The taxes from Bestbuy gets it up to $300. Still good price. Going to test it against the HP Slate8 pro. At 1st I really liked the HP (Tegra 4) yet the speakers at the bottom portrait mode I cant tell ever if its stereo. Then way to many times it gets sluggish. The only thing I can relate to this is on my PC many years ago when running to many apps it would be swapping memory you get that lag.
I did try the EVGA note. Was nice yet the battery life is very short. Then on the HP running things wow the higher rez really made some apps and games look so much better. Battery life on the HP is really good. I really loved the Kendal HDX speakers. So all I need is a tab with kendal speakers, a stylus, 32gb + 2ram and I will be happy.

unfortunately, none of them. It's the Asus 8 inch Note tablet cover that is being listed as completely compatible with the LG Gpad 8.3. However, I ordered a white one twice now from two different companies on Amazon and both times my order was cancelled because they are out of stock. You can probably get it in a different color or maybe black, but I'm holding out for white. Just a search on Amazon and it will come right up.

I picked one up on on the 7th after missing out on the newegg $249 deal. I also used my amex $25 off $250 so that helped cover the tax. If it drops in price before the extended holiday return period (almost a certainty) I'll get that as well. Now I just need to decide if I'm going to return the N7 32G I picked up last week for $209. The overall dimensions for the 2 are pretty close but the screen size is the reason I got the G Pad.

Well some of us jumped on the G Pad but to tell the truth there is just no visibility with this device. All BB stores in my area don't have one on display and unless one is savvy, you wouldn't even know they carried it.
And I'm unsure what other big box retailers carry it either where you can just walk in and buy it. This may or may not hurt with a price drop in the near future. If the manufacturer monitors sales, I don't no how they can expect much more without the product being more visible to the public. A shame really cause it blows away much of what is out there currently available!

I wouldn't have bought one with being able to try it out beforehand. The closest BB didn't carry it but one not too far away supposedly had them in inventory. When I went I naturally went to where the tablets were and it was nowhere to be found. I asked a sales associate and they said they don't carry it I mentioned that BB online shows they have them so he dug a bit deeper and found out they have them over in the mobile department. It makes no sense to me since it's currently WiFi only but there it was with the LG phones.
I know there had been a couple of these threads so my apologies ahead of time. I an looking to buy my son a tablet for the holidays. In my research I was drawn to this one for its stock experience, specs, expandable storage, stylus, and gaming. Problem I am having is all the threads taking about cracks and poor WiFi. The tablet will almost exclusively be used in my house and mainly in the room with the router. My son is only 7 so he is not ready for some of the more intense games but I like the idea that he can grow with this and that the specs will carry over for a while. My plan would be to use my ouya controller at first then work my way to buying the nvidia controller if he is playing enough on it to warrant
I can get him a nexus 7 for $120 less or a galaxy tab 8.4 pro for $50 less but both have their shortcomings. I guess my question is are the complaints a vocal minority or is this tablet a great idea not truly realized? Thanks in advance for any thoughts
It's true the wifi is not top notch, but it works fine anyway. It simply does not have the best range it could possibly have. It's not a dealbreaker for me.
Cracked edges - no problems here, and I think this is a minority problem.
Overall I am pleased with the tablet. The battery life is OK. I love the stylus and the fact that I can stream games from my PC. Just the other day I was playing FIFA 14 from my PC with an XBOX 360 PC controller connected with an USB OTG cable.
My advice: go for it. The tablet is solid.
cheers

I have just recently purchased the Shield and this was a unit that was a RMA replacement that the seller got when he sent his back because of the issue with cracks. I have been completely happy with the unit thus far and the fact that it is near stock is a huge benefit. I also have a Nexus 7 (2012) that my daughter uses and while it works well for her (8 years old) it doesn't have quickness that the Nvidia does. As for WiFi I have had no issues at all with mine, I know others here have but I have not.
I also have a couple of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3's in the house and they are garbage, I won't buy another Samsung product as I have had nothing but trouble with them.
Also in the coming weeks if you keep a close eye on Craigslist you can probably find someone selling a near new Nvidia as the lemmings part with them to go get the new Nexus 9 or the latest piece from Apple. That's what I did and saved quite a bit off retail.
MG
I hear you, I am trying to low ball someone on Craigslist who says he just picked up an I pad air. Don't think he is biting but it's worth a shot.

I just got mine (LTE model) last night and seriously, I have never seen a tablet fly like this one does! It is beautiful, feels great in the hand, WIFI and LTE work great and it is just a pleasure to use. I'm not a serious gamer but really wanted it for media, art-making and everything else I can do with a fast and sleek android tablet, including some light gaming. I am not at all disappointed.
Rooting with towelroot was super simple and didn't require unlocking. It is sweeeet!

Calm down he was asking for 325 for a bundle but I dont want half of it. I offered 250 he can take it or leave it. If no one else offers anything he can choose if it is worth it to him. I sell a ton on Craigslist and can make my own decisions on if I like an offer or not.

Well folks can criticize low balling if they like but in my case I went low on a WiFi model and was very nice and respectful in my language when I made it. He politely turned me down but I was patient and after I noticed it was still listed (and re-listed) two weeks later I contacted him again and restated my offer with a kind note that "with Apple and Google releasing new devices it may be difficult to move a lesser known device like this at the price you're asking." He emailed me back within minutes asking if I could come up $20 and he'd throw in the 64GB MicroSD he bought for it. I kindly agreed since I was going to pay at least $30 for one on Amazon anyway.
My point is there is nothing wrong with low balling if you are respectful about it. If the person refuses and gets more for their device then great, many times they won't but if you're a d*ck they won't even take a low ball offer seriously.
MG
As with any transaction there is a worth to the purchaser. I only said my offer was low ball because I would be getting the tablet, case, controller, and 32gb SD for $325 which is a great value retail. I did not intend on buying the remote, don't want the nvidia case, and have an SD. So to me I am buying a used tablet for the same price as retail but getting allot more in the end. I run the risk of the potential that the unit has issues and the struggle of getting nvidia to make good not being the original purchaser.
