Am I naive in expecting insane battery life? What am I missing here? Why isn't anyone really talking about how this should be crazy amounts? Most phones are closer to 3000mah.
I know the 810 is a hog, but it's an amoled display, not 4k, the oneplus two is only 3300, moto pure is only 3000, z5 2900, note 5 is 3000 as well. I have to believe with marshmellow (fingers crossed) and 3450 with an amoled display that's only 5.7" this is going to be insane, like 2 days on light use insane???
I'm hoping for some pretty good things from the battery life, i've got the Nexus 6 currently and it lasts me a day and a half with about 4 hours screen on time ( which is fine for me in all honesty )
This has a smaller display and a bigger battery, lets not forget that " sensor hub " that will help idle time immensely if it works as advertised
+Doze
+App standby
I've got a good feeling its gonna be a goodun
and this is the main reason why im picking the 6p over 5x because i strongly believe this has to be a two day battery life, everything is lining up so very good.
I'm expecting great stand by time, but once that screen is on, battery is going to drop like a rock. This was the case with the Moto X Pure at least. I was afraid to turn on that screen, my battery stats show a straight line going down.

Since I had a Nexus 5, I won't hold out any hope for any sort of battery life.
I'll take what I can get.
Depents how efficient the display is.

It has a 2.5k display like most other flagships, and AMOLED is the display technology, it has nothing to do with the resolution.
Running dev Preview 3 I've gotten much better standby and battery life as a whole. While I don't expect much better life out of the box than I already have once it's tweaked with the right kernels etc it better be way better than my current gen especially to give up wireless charging....

The battery is gonna be INSANE! Huge reason why I went to the 6p ! The 6 on avg for me had 5 hours SOT so I can only imagine what this will be. I have the m9 right now and I cannot wait to ditch this thing. Battery is horrid on it
This the #1 reason I am getting this phone. The Note 5 has TERRIBLE battery for me as I'm a power user.
My S6E reminds me of my Evo 4G with WiMAX turned on. It's got to be better than the old school need to plug in everywhere feeling I have lately.

My pure has pretty bad battery life if the gpu gets used at all. Out of all the devices with the 808 in the same category the pure has by far the worst battery life for whatever reason.
The nexus p hopefully won't have as much of an issue.
Beware of radio signals... That leaks a lot too.
I like gsm endurance test as a review...moto x got 63 hours. Note 5 is a beast... So your if getting poor life on that... It's an app of signal issue. Try running off LTE and test.
I figure a good comparison is moto xpe. Stock almost, same size, qhd.
So factor in battery is 15% larger, Amoled should save 15 % (see note 5 Amoled vs moto x pure LCD) and marshmallow should save 15%. All that is being conservative. Let's say -5% for snapdragon 810 vs 808. So total 40% better than moto xpe. Which gets on average 3.5 to 4.5 sot time (ignoring the under 3 and over 6 which is usually tweaking or terrible signals)
So this should average at minimum 40% better. So at least 5 hours sot.....and max of 7?
Sounds reasonable. All of this was guessing while I await the phone

I just returned my Moto X Pure, and I wasn't getting a minute over 3 hours SoT. I liked the phone at first but by the end of the two weeks, it went back. The MXP seemed to drain regardless of having the screen on, and I was on wifi basically 99% of the time.

wow that really is amazing.
I'd be happy with that.
So far from all the phones I've had, The OPO on KitKat had the best battery life.
I had wifi, bt and gps on all day and I'd have around 20-50% left before I went to bed.
Lollipop destroyed that :crying:
hello,
i ordered a moto x play two days ago and i will get my device today or tomorrow. Now i am not sure if i should upgrade to marshmallow. Regarding to some posts here the battery life seems to suffer from the update. Is this true? Do you have the same battery life with 6.0 as with 5.1.1 ? For me battery life is kind of crucial. I chose the moto because of the good battery.
I'd love to know your opinion.
Thanx in advance.
Battery life seemed a bit lower on 6.0 than on Lollipop for a few days. Now, it's stabilized, and I'd say it's almost as good

It's been great for me. 7-8 hrs sot with stock kernel and now on track to get 10 with Squid kernel.
I get 10+ hours SOT . With stock mm.. dual sim and mobile data.
I usually play around with the autostarts app and titanium backup. I guess, i can root my device and i will then be able to optimize the phone i like with these tools.
Thanx for your answers. I still would like to get some more votes.
regards.
I think the only difference MM can make will be due to optimizing certain apps. Its sucha shame that google play services cant be optimized. I am finding its better than LP.
Offtopic - I had a S5 (g900h) with LP 5.0.1 stock and samsung had this optimization option which lead to an awesome battery life. This is why I believe that can be the only thing which can make it better
It depends on your usecase. If you are constantly on the phone, they won't differ much. If your phone is screen-off most of the time, Marshmallows Doze mechanism can save you a ton of battery life (assumping you jumpstart it with Naptime or similar). It could possibly be matched or even overcome if you REALLY fine tune a lollipop setup with Amplify, but from a technical standpoint doze is far better, because the OS controls when the device wakes up, not the apps themselves. Also, the most recent (best?) kernels will only be for MM.

You'll find that SOT will be a wide range without at least some defined criteria to follow. While usage (games and videos will simply murder battery) and cell coverage will play a huge role in the disparity, you'll also find a difference based on other factors like ROM (stock vs. AOSP/CM), kernel, time off the charger, phone's % awake time, etc. With all that said, 3-4 hrs seems to be the avg for many users who run AOSP/CM, have bad cell coverage, or otherwise poorly optimized phones. Those who do some optimizing (Greenify, Amplify, custom kernel, etc.) will find 4-5 hrs on avg. Those who do some heavy optimizing with their phone may find 5-6 hrs.

I have my Moto X Style since a month now. I use Greenify to shut down apps when the phone is about to rest for a few hours while I'm working. I'm not rooted, so completely stock.
I don't have a screen on time, but think the battery is far to be so bad. Coming from an Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 5.5, the Moto X Style (or Pure Edition) battery is better. And the fact that with a power charger it charges so quickly (70 minutes or so), battery is not an issue at all for me so far.
Phone is quick and great and I think the camera does a killer job, better than I thought it would. Screen is awesome as well.

4-5 hours on stock MM
Best I've ever gotten, the phone shutdown less than a minute after this screenshot... Just over 10 hours of use, including about an hour and a half of airplane mode, and nearly 4.5 hours screen on time. This took keeping brightness way down and I was lucky not to have poor signal during the entire time.
Sad part is this seems impressive for this device... I came from a Moto G 2015 and it would go 18 hours of use with 6-7 hours of SOT easily, or a more typical day of 3.5-4 hours SOT over 16 hours of use and around 50% battery remaining. I never really worried about battery life on that device like I do now.
Seriously debating on going back, selling my MXPE well it still has decent value, and either grabbing a G4 or waiting for the new Nexus devices.

Hi,
I recently bought the Moto X Pure Edition. Overall I am very pleased with it however there is one thing that constantly bugs me. The battery life is absolutely terrible. I'd seen no mention of this before I bought the device but having bought it, I'm realizing how terrible it is. I only get around 2-2.5 hours of screen on time. This is even worse than the moto g 2014 I owned before which i could easily get 3 hours with. Are other people having similar experiences and are there any potential solutions?
Also, can you guys suggest some custom ROMs for me with great battery life and very stable? Thanks!
Try TruPureXMM, it has the best battery life among other roms, AFAIK. Well, that's because it is based on stock. Try it out for yourself.

Am on stock and battery life is terrible. Can hardly end with 3h max with a full charge. And am one of those that stops most of the moto actions, low brightness, no wi-fi all time etc but still its worst battery life I've seen on a mobile. I think it has to do with the big screen it has!

check out frankenkernel. I get 5Hrs of SoT
I have a brand-new XT 1572 (on stock) and would not call its battery life terrible. I'm getting 5 hours continuous SoT on WiFi (not sure people are using the term "SoT" consistently - if the phone is on for 24 hours, I'd expect to get less than 5 hours SoT; same when I'm on a 4G connection, particularly a bad one). Not great, but acceptable (and not unexpected in light of XT 157x reviews).
I have a shortcut to Settings - battery on my home screen which I check frequently (while I'm in the process of getting familiar with the phone), I have OS Monitor on my home screen, and I occasionally check "running services" under "Developer Options". I use Nova Launcher which makes it very easy to force-stop an app just by long-tapping it, hitting "App info" and then stopping it.
All of this has caused me to uninstall a few power-hogging apps which I probably did not need in the first place; I also find I need to occasionally force-stop apps such as Neutron.
In an average day, from 6am-10pm of mixed WiFi/LTE usage I get about 3 hours total screen on time, and the majority of the time I have good-excellect signal strength... If I have average to poor signal strength, 2-2.5 hours SOT is normal. On WiFi with continuous usage I get 4+ hours. This is normal.
Sorry, but the battery life of this phone, especially if used in bright light or outdoors, is just not good. The display is gorgeous, but it is an unbelievable battery hog.
I have tried many ROMs and all have worse batter then stock... TruPureXMM is debloated stock but the battery life isn't much different because it's the screen that takes 80-90% of the power, no rom can change that.

I don't disagree with you - I call it "acceptable", you call it "just not good". I'd stop (far) short of calling it "terrible, terrible" though - and let's face it, this is why the device sells at the price point it does - which, to me, right now, is (a) close to the limit of what I'm prepared to pay for a smartphone and (b) great value for money. I'd rather be close to a charger or battery pack (in fact, I ordered a slim battery pack when I ordered the phone) with this phone at all times than owning a different phone (in this price range) with better battery life but other challenges/compromises I need to take. This devices's predecessor (for me) was the LG G3 - same thing, except that this device actually works.

I completely agree with the above. Thats main reason I havent used a custom Rom yet and still waiting for Stock 7 realease (hopefully we see it within the next 2 months) before trying a custom rom yet.
But i wanted to ask a question about the screen taking all that ℅ in the battery drain:
I remember i read somewhere in another thread an option that changes the screen resolution to FHD 1080 instead of QHD. You think that really makes the screen battery drain lighter or it doesnt matter !?

My prior phones were an LG G2 and an LG G4 and I was thinking that my 6 month old 2015 MXPE had good battery life. I'm not sure I have ever had a phone that lasted all day. I need to stop buying sub par phones I guess. My Pixel XL (once it gets here) will hopefully fix that.
This is from stock 6.0 - May 2016 Patches - using it on Verizon network
From GSam Battery Monitor, since August 15, 2016:
Averages Per Complete Charge -
Battery Life: 1d 5.3h (8h 29m Active)
Screen On: 3h 56m (5h 11m Max)
I pretty much just charge my phone for 45 - 50 minutes a day at work and do not leave it on the charger any longer than it has to be.

What about it? Kernels, roms, etc, can't do anything about how much power the display uses, it's like trying to make a 100w light bulb use 40 watts... they can only effect other things like SOC, syncing, etc.

I agree here. A 5.7" screen will require more power just to light up. As far as changing resolution, you are still powering a 5.7" display. You might notice some slight difference in battery (and maybe fps) when playing games, but it is really related to going a little easier on the chips.
I'm still on true pure, not even the most recent build, and I could always get a day and a half of battery use, or at least a full day with moderate use.
Hey folks, just wanted to chime in on this. I had the phone since it's release and got around 5 to 6 hours of SoT with WiFi, GPS enabled (but not while using maps lol) and brightness set to about 50%. Battery life has gotten worse with each update and now I am waiting for Android 7 and I will reset my phone after it's installed.
Btw I disable any build in app that I don't use and uninstall apps that use to much battery in the background.
Am on Telsa 03/02 Build. And the battery life is as good as Stock. 3hrs SOT on LTE with Data ON the whole time and 4hrs SOT on WiFi. All the while keeping GPS ON High Accuracy and Ambient display.
No Greenify or any other battery booster.
The performance is better than Stock and all the features working near perfectly. It's a good choice, you get to use Nougat without really compromising the battery much.
Here is the post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...ms-validus-t3561477/post71196401#post71196401
Also I have recently changed the resolution to 1080p. It doesn't increase battery life much but definitely boosts the performance.

Nope, that was just coincidence. Changing to WQHD+ will not improve battery life. It will reduce battery life by a very tiny amount. You must have had something else happen at the same time.
This is why comparing battry life with others is pointless, because there are just too many variables. As you have found, you can't even compare battery life with yourself without getting onconsistent results.

I changed it back to fhd+ for a day and my battery did seem worse, wqhd gives me much better battery life
No reason it should take weeks to settle in. My first full day on the s10+ was 5.5 hours screen on time and still had 49% left after 16 hours. Currently on 40 hours off charger 7.2hrs sot and 17% left. This battery really is amazing but will always vary between users. Can't see how wqhd could do anything but hurt battery life but I'll run it tomorrow just to see what happens.

Thats insane. 5.5hours sot with almost 50% battery left? Surely you have turned off LOTS of features / adjusted brightness and various settings?
For me to achieve that i would need to use the phone at almost its lowest brightness and disable background activity, turn off auto sync, bluetooth, and pretty much anything else thats a battery drain!

I don't think I have that much disabled. Brightness is on auto and is often pretty bright, power saver is on medium so background data is disabled along with auto sync because I don't need push notifications. I have bixby routines turn on auto sync when charging at night to sync anything that needs it. I use Bluetooth in the car and for headphones at the gym. Probably 6-7 Bluetooth hours on that screenshot. Not much WiFi since I'm never home. Location on. Don't use bixby itself because, well, who does? It's pretty effortless really. Especially compared to my note 8 where it's nearly dead at 5 hours sot.
I'm upped the resolution on my S10 plus from the beginning and getting anywhere from 8-9 hours sot. Way better than the iPhone 10s Max I had! A lot faster too!
With a week so far of using the S10 I've gotten equal battery life with FHD and QHD. About 4.5hrs SOT and 15-19 hours up time.

Ah you have battery saver mode on. It works magic to extend your battery life. It gave me good life on my S9+ when I had it. But my logic is why did I have to have battery saver on to match the battery life that I got on my 1+6 and Pixel 2 XL?

Yeah. I've always used battery saver on every phone I've had. I'm kind of a battery life junky and when battery drains fast or when idling it bothers me. Some reason I got better life in my note 8 without saver on though. Helps on my s10 though and easily outlasts my wife's pixel 2 XL. It really all just depends on the user though. 4.5 sot is still a respectable time in my opinion especially for heavier users and about what I got on my note 8 and had no complaints. Difference now though is that I can use the s10 HEAVILY in one day and it won't die whereas my note 8 would have been dead hours before and would need a boost late in the day.
