I have an Samsung S5 right now and have been tempted to pick up a Moto X. I would prefer the 32GB but you can't even order them online at this time so was thinking of 16GB at AT&T store. I can freeze the bloatware so not worried about that.
My main hesitation is I can't figure out what I'm really gaining from my S5. Screen is about the same, same CPU, same RAM, camera on S5 is better, bigger battery on S5, software is better on X, build quality is better...
So it sort of comes down to better build quality and software. Everything else would be the same or not much different.
Has anyone gone from S5 to X and what's been your experience?>
I'm on the same boat. I have an unlocked S5 16gb version. I got it in hopes that the S5 google edition would be released and I would simply convert it. Totally bummed because that never happened and I'm used to Google edition or Nexus phones. The S5 is riddled with constant lag across the UI and popups everywhere. Also the bloat on the S5 is amazing. I turned off most of the apps and found that this caused errors on other apps I couldn't disable, must be due to some dependencies. So I decided to go with Moto X, which is still currently being built and I'm expecting to receive on 10/8.
Some things I'll probably miss include the bigger battery (S5 easily lasts me all day with heavy use), SD card slot (had an extra 64GB for music and pics), and the IR blaster which I used to control my TVs or simply prank people
But I'm willing to overlook all of the above since I'll be getting a better software experience, something I miss from all of my previous nexus phones and my S4 GPE.
I just came from a Galaxy Note 3 Developer Edition (running CM11) to the Verizon Moto X.
When you consider the unlockable bootloader, 3gb of RAM, and screen size, and S pen, the N3 DE has some advantages on paper vs the X.
I'm not trying to justify anything, nor convince anyone else to change.
My needs changed, somewhat, in terms of size, and I needed something just a little smaller. At 5.2", the new Moto X was about right for me. I would have not even considered changing if the X did not have stock AOSP, and such outstanding reviews.
So far, I am not disappointed with the X. But it is definitely not a competitor of the Note Series.
It is an outstanding device, though for someone who wants stock AOSP, and a very fast, smooth responsive OS.
I made this exact switch this past weekend. The S5 is a great phone, but I simply can't resist the combination of stock android and Motorola's enhancements. I love the look, feel, and fluidity of the Moto X, and the front facing speakers are wonderful (I stream a lot of radio at work). I really did enjoy the S5, and I will miss the screen and camera there, but overall I'm really enjoying the Moto X and am happy with my decision to switch.
The 32 GB is available again. If you want a white front those are delayed. I just built one (just for fun, pure edition) a little while ago.
I'll be getting the Verizon version tomorrow and I have the S5. I'll see if its worth the switch, if not I'll send it back.
I got an update yesterday night, and my new customized Moto X arrives tomorrow morning! Good thing I work from home tomorrow so I'll have it up and running in no time! Pretty excited!

It just doesn't have that wow factor. For me it's just a bigger screen. They're both snappy and fluid. I'm not seeing anything yet that says I'm a keeper. Is there something that you or others have seen or read that makes it stand out?
I disagree (just my opinion). I'm a phone hopper. I get the latest and greatest as soon as they come out (tablets included) and besides the battery life, which isn't the worst in the world by any means, this is hands down my favorite phone to date. My last 5 phones were the One Plus One 64g, Oppo N1 CM edition, Galaxy S5, Nexus 5, M8 and Note 3 (that's 7). I personally wouldn't go back to ANY of them from this years Moto X. It's really all about preference. I like stock android with a few bells and whistles. And the bells and whistles that Motorola has sprinkled in work flawlessly and I actually use. I'm not dogging Samsung, but the first thing I do when I get one of their devices is turn every single useless gimmicky crap off and put a Google Now launcher and Google Keyboard on it. I also have the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 LTE with phone capabilities (to troll some people when making phone calls lol) and did all of what I said above to it before I installed anything. I hate to compare Motorola to Apple because the iphone and iPad bores the hell out of me, but Motorola paired their hardware and software as well as Apple does for the user experience. I prefer this phone over the red Nexus 5 and I'm a Nexus head. Just my two cents and my preference. If you're looking for a phone with zero lag, a beautiful screen, nice looking build, front facing firing speaker (which is dam loud BTW) and just an all around dam near perfect experience using it, then get the Moto X. If you're more concerned with battery life, removable battery, better camera and ALL the bells and whistles Samsung pours in then stick with the S5. The S5 is a great phone! And SD card support and IR blaster. Samsung's awesome.. I just prefer this Moto X.

Since you have had so many phones could you please compare the one-handed usage experience between the M8, S5, and the Moto X (2014)? How would you rank them in that aspect?
I made the switch and while I am overall happy, I am very disappointed in the way that the Moto X handles drops. The GS5 is a beast and can handle abuse butI had a small spill last night that would've left the GS5 with nothing more than a scratch, however my X got a quadruple crack at the top left corner that extended all the way across the screen. And then magically a new crack formed this morning at the bottom COMPLETELY out of nowhere. This phone is great but it's SUPER FRAGILE.
i think the best way to say it is if you use the few features that moto has put on their phone, then you will have a much better experience over the gs5. other than that... its just a phone. there is something to be said for the beauty of the leather backs also.
I have used but not owned an S phone since the first generation (Epic with keyboard, great for its day). I use a Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet and a Moto G phone at the moment. Everything about the Samsung experience is some window dressing hanging off of android. I really like the note, but all of the touchwiz junk added to the device is irritating. With Motorola, it is all clean. Where they add, they do so through apps, so there is better control. On my G, I changed to the Nexus experience launcher, and the difference from the one packaged with the phone is almost imperceptible - I just gained a swipe to a screen of cards. The S5 and 2014 X are so technically similar, it will come down to if you like the Samsung experience or want closer to Nexus.

It's not supposed to be imo, they are two different class of device. I think the Shamu will be more comparable, even then it's not designed with stylus in mind I think. The note is pretty much on it's own until a real stylus phone competitor come along.

I have two questions for you, because you have used other phones, so you will be able to tell better, firstly, is the camera really improved from last year's X? And secondly how much Screen On time are you getting with normal usage?
I personally am looking for a phone to upgrade from my 2013 X, and I just can't find anything worthy!
S5: Great hardware, bearable design, brilliant display, very good camera, but TouchWiz, so no way.
M8: Camera. And I hate all aluminium build too.
Z2: Self crackling body! Also screen to body ratio isn't really great!
G3: LG's UI is no better than TouchWiz, maybe slightly better but it's still awful. But fantastic design, and OIS!
And then there's the X 2014: Extremely over saturated display. Leather back has questionable durability I suppose (and when leather is available it's impossible to choose something else, for me at least). I am highly doubtful about the camera quality. 32 GB variant is still not available in my country and 16 GB without an SD card slot is unbelievable in 2014. But polished UI, and the overall UI experience is near Nexus level.
I played with the Moto X in a store for a while and came away unimpressed. Camera seems so so unless you force HDR on. Screen seems over saturated and no way to adjust like on Samsung. Build quality is nice for sure and software seems nice and stock. I really wanted to get this phone but the smaller battery, lesser camera makes it hard to switch. I also have a wireless charging back on my S5 so I'd loose that and I have wireless chargers everywhere around my house. I don't think I'd honestly use most of the Moto software either especially since my Moto 360 gives me glance able notifications already and remote voice when phone is off.

The ergonomics of the Moto X 2014 for one handed use smoke the M8 and S5. Motorola spent some time holding this sucker because it's VERY natural one handed for me. I would put the M8 in second place because of the curved back, but the aluminum is slippery as hell and then the S5. The S5 doesn't slip in your hand, but doesn't feel as natural as the Moto X does. This is just my experience though. Everyone holds their phones differently. My wife texts on her Note 2 with her left thumb and right pointer finger and it makes me mental lol.

The camera is without a doubt better than last years Moto X and is fine for a pull out of your pocket shooter. It's perfectly fine for what I need it for and I own a restaurant and take a lot of pics of food for our social media. And I'm a bad person to ask about screen on time because I keep my screen on 100% 24/7 (I'm always near a charger). I haven't tested it consistently, but with heavy use I would say 3-4 hours screen on time and that's power using it.

So if I could just barely reach the top left corner with my right hand on the S5, will it be easier to reach the same corner on the HTC One and even easier on the Moto X?
Well, to be complete since there are threads of Nexus 6 vs. OnePlus One and Note 4 I thought I might just make this post.
Nexus 6
Differences
Screen: higher resolution and bigger size
Battery: larger
Price: cheaper
Camera: higher mega pixels
RAM: higher
Similarities
Battery: non-replaceable
OS: No bloat wares with only stock OS
Carriers: can be used on all carriers
Things still unknown between the 2 phones.
1. Battery life?
2. Camera images?
3. Can the Nexus 6 do slow motion video recordings?
"Screw iPhones, how dare you post that crap here?????"
Just kidding.
Both phones offer advantages that the other doesn't. I think this is a note-worthy comparison but it shouldn't boil down to just comparing specs. I mean, iPhones have poor specs, on paper, when compared to the top Android devices but it's rarely the case in real-world performance. For example, in benchmarks, iPhones usually win in single-core and graphics departments. iPhones have been notorious for their build quality and top-of-the-line camera performance. Then I suppose you could go into the classic LCD vs AMOLED displays argument.
However, I think at the end of the day, the biggest deciding factor is going to be the software: are you more inclined towards iOS or Android?
Since this is primarily an Android forum, let me start out by bringing up some of the plusses of iPhones:
- TouchID. Here's a great post by XDA member _MetalHead_ explaining some of the advantages brought by TouchID.
- Continuity is a pretty amazing feature. Seamless syncing between OSX and iOS as well picking up where you left off is pretty genius. I can't wait for the day we get something similar on Android.
- The camera on iPhones, despite being 8-megapixels, is still one the best smartphone cameras around.
- iOS still gets the good apps and games first. Apps generally look better on iOS; although, now with the release of Android L, I think that gap is going to become more narrow.
Honestly, if this post was made before we knew about Android L, I would have added a lot of things to the list above such as the consistency across iOS. Thankfully Android L has brought this much needed consistency in the form of material design.
And it goes back to my first point: which OS do you prefer?
For me, that choice is clear: it's Android. I love customizing the hell out of my phones (and a plethora of other things that Android does better than iOS). Nothing beats Android in that department. My biggest gripes in the past, such as an inconsistent UI, untimely updates on non-Nexus devices and ****ty build quality have pretty much all been addressed by the Nexus 6 and Android L.
I have been using continuity since 2010 on Android only for ios users that's new

Re. Battery life, How could you make a definitive statement about a phone and new version of OS that are not released yet?
Nexus 6 hands down, down with iphone!
jkjk Iunno, iphone may just have better camera, but let hope not. Pure android is just as optimized as the IOS, so imagine it with these crazy specs
None of us know the Nexus' battery life yet. I can say that I get no joke, at least 10 hours of "usage" as in screen time on my iPhone 6 plus on LTE/wifi. It is excellent in that way. Also has a gorgeous screen, nice build, and an absolutely amazing camera. I think iOS8 is so much nicer to look at on a screen of this quality. I look at my Nexus 7 and 5.0 just is ugly and bland in comparison. Why the hell did Google use GRAY for text? It just reduces otherwise nice screens to a bland pastel geometric mess.
However, this is my first iPhone, and man I miss android, especially the Moto X iteration of android. The features and how it all works together just can't be beat. I'm getting the Nexus 6, and I really hope the battery life is similar. iOS is just so so boring, and if you like GOOGLE apps, then I don't see how anyone can like an iPhone. Google app integration, or any 3rd party for that matter, is just so minimal, even with iOS8. I'm literally having Google Now and home screen withdrawls. Also, once Google Inbox goes live with the public, I'm sure people will be clamoring for what Google offers on android.
Yosemite on my rMBP is amazing however, first apple laptop too.

As far as I know, Usage =/ Screen On Time, you could essentially play music for 3 hours and iOS would count it as usage.
I'm not discrediting what you are saying, you could by all means be getting 10 hours of screen on time but I associate the great battery life of the 6 Plus with its amazing standby time.
Most android devices lose about 1% or more an hour in standby, it's the cost for having an OS with so much freedom. IOS on the other hand is extremely locked down in terms of background process allowing devices like the 6 Plus to lose nearly no battery over the course 10 hour period while in idle.
This may seem insignificant but that percent or two you lose in a hour is roughly 6 -10 minutes of screen on time. Over the course of a day, this can add up to a large amount. On the 6 Plus, you lose very little thus allowing you get better battery life in real world usage than comparable android devices like the Note 4.
Most android devices tend to out preform the 6 Plus in a pure battery endurance test but once you compare real world usage, the 6 Plus tends to outlast them.
The Nexus 6 stands a good chance of beating the 6 Plus because of the optimization Google is able to do as well as the lack of rogue background processes found on stock android. TouchWiz is a nightmare for standby battery drain, there is just way too many background processes to deal with which continue to drain battery.

I don't need more than 5 hours screen on time in a single day, I need a kick in the ass if I'm on the phone any longer than that in a day. This should be possible with the Nexus 6, but probably not any longer than that.

The screen on time calculated by IOS must be different then how it is calculated on android. I think in IOS when the lock screen is on it counts as screen on time. Because my iPhone 6 gave me more screen on time than the M8 did despite the M8 having much better battery life.
That on ios isn't sot. It is usage. A totally different thing

Usage on iOS is essentially "awake" time.
This is a real tough one. The 6 Plus is one seriously bad ass device. I would have gotten the Plus instead of the 6 if it were a little more pocketable, but boy would I love to play NOVA 3 or Modern Combat 5 on that screen. I was just in the Apple Store today and played with the Plus for about 10 minutes, and while I'm super happy with my decision to buy the 6, there was a tiny part of me that felt just a little bit of buyers remorse. I think the 6 Plus would make a great secondary device, but it's a little too large to be a daily driver, at least for my lifestyle. That said, the N6 is going to be the same thing- nice to have, but not practical as an every day device.
Comparing the 6 Plus to the N6 is really Apples to oranges, as they are completely different devices. But here are some bullet points that reflect MY OWN PERSONAL OPINIONS on the matter-
Design and build quality- Love Apple or hate them, there is no denying that they make some of the most beautiful personal electronic devices on the planet, and they are always built to incredibly tight tolerances. The 6 Plus is no different. It is one seriously GORGEOUS device. I think the N6 is also beautiful, but it isn't as elegant as the 6 Plus. I just got the new Moto X and it is hands down the nicest Android phone I have ever used when it comes to design and build, and seeing as though the N6 is just a blown up Moto X, I expect it to be just as nice. So all that said, I think this one is a wash, and comes down to personal taste.
In-hand feel- A lot of people have been complaining about the thickness of the N6, but what they fail to realize is that it is only that thick in the middle, and it's tapered toward the edges. Going off the current Moto X, this gives it an incredibly ergonomic feel, and makes the phone very comfortable to hold. My biggest complaint about the 6 and 6 Plus is that they are just too thin, and the Moto X really drives that point home. It is bigger and thicker than the iPhone 6, but is far more comfortable to hold in hand. In fact, the current Moto X is probably the single most comfortable phone I've ever held, second only to the original Moto X. Due to its size, I don't think the N6 will be anywhere near as comfortable to hold as the Moto X, but I expect it to be a lot better than the 6 Plus. Even though the X is bigger than the 6, it is actually easier to use one-handed than the 6 is, because you can shift it around a bit in your hand without the worry of dropping it; I always feel like the 6 is going to slip from my grasp when I shift it around. Your hand is not flat, and the curve of the Moto X/N6 is designed to fit the curve of your hand. In this regard, Motorola did a bang up job. Gonna have to give this one to the Nexus 6 on faith.
Screen- I am not one to get caught up in the resolution wars, and I think QHD is a gimmick on screens this size. 1080p is MORE than enough, and in some cases, 720p is plenty. The screen on the 6 and 6 Plus is the nicest I have ever seen on a smartphone. The colors are incredibly vivid, the blacks are damn near AMOLED level, and since the whole package is fused into one panel, the screen literally looks like it is a sticker on the surface of the phone. Side by side, the just over 720p screen on my iPhone 6 absolutely blows the screens of my Nexus 5 and new Moto X out of the water. If you told me it was a 1080p display I'd believe you. You cannot see individual pixels unless you strain really hard, everything is incredibly detailed, and again, the colors are ridiculous. There is something with the technology Apple used that makes it seem higher resolution, because if you compare it to the original Moto X that has a similar res, it's a night and day difference. Even though the display on the N6 is QHD, I don't expect it to be anywhere near as nice as the one on the 6 Plus.
Camera- The camera on the 6 Plus is widely regarded as one of if not the best camera ever to grace a smartphone. With Google's and Motorola's track record, I don't expect the N6 to change that. I'm sure it'll be nice and more than acceptable, but for people who really depend on the cameras on their phones (I do not), the 6 Plus is probably the way to go.
Performance- Make fun of the specs all you want, but the iPhone is a performance powerhouse. Apple focuses on USER EXPERIENCE which in my mind is FAR more important than numbers on paper. The iPhone doesn't need a quad core processor or 3gb of RAM because of how optimized iOS is. With its dual core chip and only 1GB of RAM, somehow the iPhone manages to outperform every other phone on the market when it comes to graphically intense gaming, and at least match the most powerful Android phones in all other areas. If specs mattered so much, I'd think the current Android flagships would smoke the iPhone. They don't. Heck, look at Samsung- their flagships always have top specs yet somehow they still manage to be laggy and sluggish at times, something the iPhone just doesn't ever exhibit. Last year's Moto X with its dual core processor had the best out-of-box user experience of any smartphone at that time because Motorola optimized the crap out of it. We have gotten to the point of diminishing returns when it comes to specs, todays flagships don't dramatically outperform those from last year. My Nexus 5 is still ridiculously fast, and the new Moto X with the 801 isn't much faster, if at all. The iPhone consistently benchmarks with the best of them, and even though benchmarks don't mean a damn thing, its real world performance is up there with the best of them as well. I think people care way too much about specs these days, and are missing the point on what's actually important and again, that's USER EXPERIENCE. So that said, seeing as though none of us have used the final version of Android L, we have no idea what the UX is going to be like. This one is a wash until the N6 gets put to the test.
Battery life- No way to tell until we get the N6 in hand and get to put it to the test. The 6 Plus has some seriously insane battery life, but with all the optimization Google did with Android L, it's possible that the N6 will get some great life as well. But basing my opinion of historical data, I think the 6 Plus will have the edge here.
Utility- No question, N6. The 6 Plus is just a massive iPhone, and Apple made pretty much zero changes to take advantage of the extra screen real estate. In a case like this, I think home screen widgets are indispensable and will fully maximize the productivity of the phone. While I understand why Apple hasn't changed iOS much over the course of its life (millions of soccer moms all over the world would likely revolt), it's time they do something different. Advantage Android, with a big fat LOL.
Apps and Games- No explanation needed, iOS wins this one without ever having to look over its shoulder.
I'm sure I missed some important points, but these are the ones that came to mind. In the end it'll really boil down to the old iOS vs. Android debate. With the iPhone, you have the perfect marriage of hardware and software, with a gorgeous phone and an equally gorgeous (albeit somewhat tired and bland) operating system, and the best app and game selection in the business. With the N6, you have a beautiful device that'll likely be super comfortable to hold, the flexibility and customizability that comes with the Android territory, and a more user oriented experience. I say that last one because with Android, it's up to the user to control how it works for them, whereas with iOS it's "you get what we give you and that's it". For some people it works, for others it doesn't. I love Android because I get to tinker with it and make it my own, and I love iOS because I don't have to worry about tinkering with it. In the end, it's a pick your poison kinda thing. Me, I want both.
Qi wireless charging and NFC. I am not sure I could give up my Qi pucks and stereo which uses NFC to begin playing music when I lay my phone on it, plus wireless charge it. If the iPhone 6+ could do that, I would give it a whirl, but it cannot. Maybe the 6S+ will... or not.
I currently have a N3 and my wife has had her 6+ for about a month now. After the first week of her having her phone I actually went ahead and put an order in for one to, and I had always been an Android guy, but her 6+ is one if not the smoothest phones I've ever used. Battery easily outlast my N3 battery, screen is on par, and the camera despite being 8mp imo takes better pics. I wound up cancelling my order though once I found out the N6 is coming to Verizon because the one main thing iOS is missing is the ability to fully customize. Also because I have a ton of purchases ive made over the last 5 years on the Play Market id hate to loose. But in all honesty the 6+ is a great phone. Look at it as just a different oem skin not OS, and if you ever get a chance to spend some time with one you can really respect it as a top of the line phone.
I'm a lifer Android user, just look at my post count on here (I'm a loser) but I recently purchased the 6+ and I can't believe I'm saying this but it is absolutely one of my favorite devices of all time. Battery life cannot be matched by any android devices currently on the market. The screen is absolutely stunning to look at and has that wow factor that I've never gotten on an android device, the HTC m7 (Believe it or not over the M8) actually came close.
And what really sold me on iOS are the apps. They are so much more refined and seem to be less susceptible to force closing like I've gotten plenty of times on several different devices.
The transition from going over to iOS from android was made easier once I got over the fact that I don't have home screens and my phone isn't customizable. Once that's out the system you come to the conclusion that ultimately a phone is only as good as the apps and in this case, iOS apps are so much better over android apps it made the transition to iOS that much easier.
Can't believe I just said I prefer iOS over Android.

Posts like yours make me happy. Being both an Android and iPhone user for a long time, I have come to love both sides for different reasons. I feel that most Android users just blindly hate iOS, which there is no reason for. So what if you can't customize the homescreens? Like you said, that's actually kind of nice because you don't have to sit and mess with it to get it to your liking. Everything else about iOS is great, and even if Apple is behind the curve sometimes with certain features, when they finally do implement something, they always do it right. Take Touch ID for instance- yeah the Atrix was the first phone with a fingerprint scanner, but it sucked. Touch ID on the other hand is awesome and a complete game changer as far as I'm concerned. And like you said, the apps available for the iPhone are generally more refined than their Android counterparts, and Android simply can't touch iOS when it comes to gaming. The iPhone is an absolutely gorgeous device, and iOS is every bit as gorgeous. The bottom line is this- fanboys on either side of the fence are ridiculous and downright pathetic sometimes. People like you and I have the great benefit of being able to use all these wonderful pieces of technology, regardless of the logo that's stamped on them. It's a freedom that I wish everyone could experience but unfortunately some people are just way too closed minded. And you know something? It's their loss.
What's everyone's personal opinion on the device after having it for a couple of days? I'm picking one up regardless but I was just curious about the initial reviews and not just from all the hate threads about removable battery and expendable storage.
Why not read the many reviews now available online ? Reviewers from tech sites are no different to asking people here - just subjective opinions from strangers, and as you are intending to purchased one regardless ...

It's de definitely snappier when changing screens or apps. Don't know how much that is 5.1.1 or the newer hardware.
We have both the note 5 and the s6 edge plus in our house, and both of us agree the edge plus in s a nicer phone. The Note 5 just barley feels like an upgrade to the Note 4. We use cases so the glass back is pointless. Unless you have to have the stylus, go with the S6 Edge Plus, in my opinion.

I honestly haven't put much thought into the Edge+ because I do use my stylist a couple times a day. I also heard the screen is a gimmick and some reviewers say it gets old after a while, might have to check one out in the stores.
I love the battery compared to the note 4. Standby time is amazing even though i have lots of installed apps and autosync on.
I'm enjoying mine quite a bit. It's my first Note, and really my first Samsung. I technically had the S6 edge for 2 weeks, but I returned it so I could get the Note 5, and because I didn't like the way it felt in my hand.

Absolutely wonderful.
The software is amazing the most sophisticated piece of "equipment" I've very had. The keyboard fits my hands now. The battery is so amazing. I am blown away.
The camera is what I've always wanted in a phone now I have something to hopefully learn with. I am not missing anything. I actually believe I will be able to quit fiddling with things and learn with this this thing.
Note 5 here

In partial to the note since I have owned all 5! It is truly a great phone.. Awesome build, super fast, great camera, fingerprint sensor is very fast, perfect screen, and as always in an spen guy so that's awesome too.
Battery life is a good as the 4 for me and I'm a super power user.
Excellent phone imo
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using Tapatalk
This is my first Note, but certainly not my first large Android phone. I've had dozens of Android phones going all the way back to the OG T-Mobile G1. My most recent phone was the OnePlus One which I carried for a year and was very happy with.
As for the Note... I LOVE it! The screen is truly breathtaking, even coming from the OnePlus One which had a great screen. The camera is seriously what I've been waiting for since 2008... THIS is how a phone camera should be. The fingerprint reader is pretty cool and it's the first time I've ever used a security lockscreen on a phone and been happy with it. Battery life has been on par/maybe slightly better than the OnePlus One which had 100mah more capacity.
One thing that caught me totally off guard is how many software features this phone has that I've never seen in any other Android. My last Samsung was a S3, so TouchWiz has changed a lot since those days.
With all that said, this is the first Android phone I've had in AGES with a locked bootloader and no modding community. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I didn't realize this was the case until after my order had been placed. There are some things from custom roms that I immediately miss and wish I could get back like: double tap to wake, silent volume adjustment, linked ringtone and notification volumes(I did fix this with Tasker), and some others.
Another thing I'm bummed about... the clear cover over the camera flash and pulse sensor is made of crappy plastic and mine has scratches all over it already just from wiping it off with my Tshirt. Really bummed about this. I usually keep my phones looking brand new for at least 8-10 months and this one is scratched in 3 days.
Although there's been a lot of comparison criticisms between the Note 4 and Note 5, the Note 5 exceeds the note 4. One of the complaints is the 3000mah battery. While the Note 4 does have more (3250mah), the Note 5 actually outlasts the Note 4. This is both measured AND real-time use. So, while in some cases "size matters", efficiency is what comes into play with the Note 5. I also just read that the Note 5 has the best display of ALL smartphones currently on the market. I think most negative criticisms of the Note 5 is spec based and not real-time use based. WhIle some may think Samsung focused more on hardware, they did come up with a more efficient and better functioning device with the Note 5.
I had the note 3 back then, jumped on the Apple boat, and a few more devices including the oppo find 7a. But after much thinking, I was aiming for the edge plus, but considering I like to jot down stuff instead of typing, I went ahead and chose the note 5. Besides that, the camera allows you to almost control all settings manually which is a big plus for us photographers. Also, you still get the awesome tricks with the gestures and such. The battery life to me seems average, even though it has the qhd display, it holds its ground against similar screen phones.
Charging is very quickly now compared to my other phones. The body is quite a new style, and much more pro looking.
Overall great phone, but it comes down to personal choice if you want to choose this or the edge plus. Good luck!

I sent mine back. I've had a lot of phones, and I've never sent one back. The main reasons I bought it were, in order of importance: 1) Fingerprint reader 2) Better
camera 3) Better display.
The fingerprint reader didn't work great for me. I found it just about as annoying as having to enter a pin or gesture unlock.
I have an LG G3, so I'm used to big phones, but this thing feels so heavy, and is just big enough that it doesn't fit in places where my G3 does.
The display and camera are nice, but not incredibly better (I know lots of people complain about the G3 display, but I think it's fine if you turn the brightness up).
I like the fact that the people who own one, are really liking their device. The Note 4 got a good amount of negative feedback when it was first announced but nothing like the 5. Like most cases, it's easy to point out flaws before even testing the device. On the way now to Verizon to pick mine up.
64g Black is what I'm going for. What did everyone else get?
I had the S6 edge before this phone and honestly its killing the Note 5 for me. The screen on the S6 seems more vibrant and clear than on the Note5. Also somehow the camera (which im told is the same on both phones) seems to take better low light pics with the galaxy vs the note. The differences are small and its still a great phone but i may end up back with the S6... Im gonna give it a few more days and see how i feel
Was told last Friday not to pre-order because I wouldn't receive my device until past 8/24 and was guaranteed that the Verizon stores around me would have 64g Friday morning. Turns out none around me have them... Thanks Verizon!
Been enjoying the phone a lot recently after switching from my iPhone 6 Plus and being on Apple phones ever since the iPhone 4. The only issue I have is apparently my battery life is bad because I used to get through a full day with my iPhone and would have roughly 30% left when I went to sleep. I've been finding out recently that I have to charge the Note 5 during the day in order to last as long. The system predicts my battery will be dead by 9 PM tonight which I thought was kinda short.. I'm not a super heavy user so I don't know what's causing it to die quicker than normal, nothing in power usage hints at what it is either..

Note5
153.2 x 76.1 x 7.6 mm
G3
146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm
a difference of (+)7.1 x (+)1.5 x (-)1.3 mm from the G3. The width should feel essentially the same, 1.5mm difference is going to be close to imperceptible. 7mm extra height is enough for you to notice, but not enough to really make a difference for most people. and it's thinner so it should fit in pockets or slim places easier.
The only major difference is weight, 149g vs 171g.
I'm not sure why you seem to think the note5 is bigger because it is, but by 7.1mm at the most compared to the G3, I dont know if I believe you when you say it doesn't fit in the same places as the G3, a difference of 7mm shouldnt be enough to do that.
SORRY to keep bringing this up, I know I know it's been "discussed" before, but just straight up answers now
So I've been reading you guys and seen there's been issues with the Nexus, like the screen, the back lower part, etc. I got the money to buy either of these, so I need your help plz
Which do you prefer, and WHY?
I've had every note series except the 5. Besides aesthetics, it wasn't a crazy enough leap to justify the price. I was a huge samsung fanboy for so long. However, I just received my nexus 6p a few days ago and I can't believe it. No matter what i did to my note, which rom i was on, how much i overclocked it, my phone never felt this good. Everything about the nexus is just wonderful. Looking back, I wish i didn't wait so long to make the switch.
I've had the note 2 and note 3. I switched to LG phones after the note 3. I jumped back on he Samsung wagon with the S6. My S6 is rooted and my carrier is Verizon. I'm actually tired of rooting a phone to get it some where near up to par. I'm waiting on the 6p. I want a phone that just works and runs stock Android. I want to receive updates when they are released and not when my carrier or manufacturer decides to release it. This is one of the things I admire about Apple iPhone. No carrier stops them from releasing an update. The Nexus 6p is going to give me that with a phone that has a good camera.
If given a choice I would pick Nexus over any other Android device.

I have both. It really depends on what you're wanting. Fast updates, seemingly unlimited dev support, incredibly smooth, amazing standby time - 6P. Slightly better camera, awesome spen features (only thing I truly miss), true QC with a lot more compatible chargers, wireless charging, Samsung pay, phone is still fast but the ram management drives me nuts, even tho the note 5 handles this the best of the galaxy line. And tw is still tw...
If I had to pick one, I'd go 6P. The limitless support and how much better stock Android is over skinned is the deciding factor for me. I also love the idea of USB c, the larger battery, and the camera is close enough that I don't miss the galaxy series.

I owned the Note 5 for almost 2 months and I've been using the Nexus 6P since Wednesday and this is my opinion. I prefer the 6P over the Note 5. The software is a lot more consistent and feels a lot snappier on the 6P. There's absolutely no lag or stutters. When I first got the Note 5 it ran like a dream but over time I def noticed lag and stutters. I believe that prob because of carriers tweaking software. The Ram management is wayyyy better on the 6P. I notice that if I open too many apps on the Note 5 they will have to reload when you try to open them again from the multitasking carousel and with the 6P everything is right were you left it. The fingerprint scanner works way faster on the 6p. As far as battery life, those battery life test that say the Note 5 has better battery life is BS and doesn't factor in real world usage. Pretty much what they do is leave the phone on and run some script that maxes out the CPU until the batter dies. My Note 5's battery life sucked. My phone would be at 100% before bed and when I wake up my phone loses 10-15%. With The 6P, I'll lose maybe 1 or 2% depending on if I'm getting notification. To me the screen quality is about the same and I'm overall happier with the 6P. One thing I will say is the Note 5 def feel more sturdy and solid in the hand and with the 6P, I feel like I'm going to drop it or break it because it's so light. So I prefer the 6P over the Note 5. Just sold my Note 5 on swappa.
Nexus 6p. Because physical home buttons, bottom fingerprint sensors, reversed back/menu buttons, having touchwiz apps shoved down my throat, terrible menu systems, lack of updates, lack of good roms, LACK OF CHOICE and having the same phone as everyone else pretty much sucks.
I'd rather have a device that was *slightly* slower, with a *slightly* worse camera with which I could completely make my own than to pretend it was all about hardware and specs. When you use the phone, you don't interface with the spec sheet. You interface with the OS and apps, and the freedom to chose in that regard is too restrictive on Samsung devices.
Just switched from a Note 4 - thinking it was a good move
I'm getting tired of the horrible camera from my note 3 and really bad build quality, so I'm thinking of getting a new flagship phone and pass my note to my girlfriend.
At the moment, I'm deciding between the nexus 6p and the newly released Galaxy s7 edge.
I used some AOSP roms on my Samsung and I fell in love with them, the ui was incredibly smooth and minimalistic, everything was flying except for the camera performance and poor battery life because somehow touchwizz had better drivers. I would really love a stock android rom on the premium body of the 6p, but I'm planning to use this phone for a long time, at least 3 years. So I was wondering if the s7 edge wouldn't be a better option, since it has better specs and should be more future proof.
How is the snapdragon 810 compared to the exynos 8890? Is the exynos much better?

With just 0.2" more and a just slightly bigger bezel at the nexus 6p, there isn't that much of a size difference between the two.
When it comes to fluidity, sure both serve a great experience as well. I at least haven't faced any fluidity problems at my G935F within the 2 days I own it and I used it pretty much including playing XCOM and FF9 which both take nice load on the device (it even just gets slightly warm at those games, I only barely noticed it even while it was something I actively checked for). But it's most likely not that much different at the nexus 6p.
The 6p is when it comes to updates more future proof, because it will get them sooner and as it is atm a year longer than the galaxy family (nexus update policy is about 3 years, samsung is known for supporting devices for 2 years, on the other hand, by being mostly open source nexus devices can have a much longer update lifetime through the community and custom roms, galaxy devices as well, but escpecially at exynos devices it is much harder). On the other hand does the s7 ship with vulkan api support already, what is more or less the next big thing in gaming.
When it comes to bare bones benchmark performance, the exynos has the upper hand pretty easily (about 50% better overall performance at antutu).
Had to make the same decision as my old phone died recently. I had the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 5. Now I ended up with the S7 edge. I think it is fair to say that the phone aim for a different type of consumer.
As I was at the university I wanted to have a cheaper phone, with a lot of customization. Also something I could "work" with, e.g. flash and modify.
Now I wanted to have something more "solid". I am not interested in flashing anymore, but something that is and looks like some value. With good camera and good performance (I did not notice the occasional lag nor would a frame lost while scrolling bother me that much).
Thus, I ended up buying the S7.
After having the 6P since it came out, I can say it's really not that great - I'm getting my S7 Edge tomorrow and look forward to using a much smaller phone, with a much better display and camera.
If you're using it for 3 years, then I'd go nexus. I'd get very sick of slow updates and TouchWiz in 3 years. The decision came down to this for me: Updates, development, and front facing speakers or nicer design, best specs available, and SD card.

I feel like there is a huge size difference between the 6p and s7 edge. 6p feels massive now when I hold it whereas the s7 edge is much better suited for one-hand use.
Overall you can't really go wrong with either. The nexus does feel a bit more fluid when navigating / using apps but it's barely noticeable, and it will receive timely updates. The samsung has the better display, camera, and battery. I think the only thing I really miss from the nexus is the fingerprint reader on the back.
I had the Nexus 6p for two weeks before the metal case buckled near the volume rocker, google it, it's a common problem. I returned it in favor of the S7E.
On the Nexus I loved the fingerprint reader location, front facing speakers and stock Android but I wasn't banking on the hardware lasting 2yrs given that it started to fail after two weeks.

Sorry for OT, but what is as much better at locating it on the back. I really like it at the front, it's pretty natural to use the thumb to unlock the device while in hand. Maybe slightly less as while it was on the back with the index finger, but I get the ability to also unlock it while the device is lying on the table, what is a big plus for my opinion...

This exactly. It's a great device, hardware wise. However that little size difference DOES make a difference. It's just a hair too long and wide to be comfortable sitting with in in jeans of any sort...and the stock android experience is nice, but a bit overhyped, at least for me. I also found it to be a rather plain, and boring device. Took GREAT photos and i loved the placement of the fingerprint sensor, but ultimately I let it go to get the S7 Edge.
One thing to consider, if you're not going to root it, go with the S7E. I had the Nexus 6P and I can't root due my work app detecting it (even with xposed) and it's just so vanilla that I got pretty bored with it. Even iOS seems to have more options than stock Android. The S7E has a ton of features baked in that are fun to play with.
If you can root though and install ROM's like PA, CM, etc... then the Nexus 6P might be the best way to go.
I sold my 6p the same day I got my s7 edge. To me they are both just as fast. After owning several Samsung and a couple nexus phone I can't believe how fluid and smooth the s7 edge is. As others have stated the 6p did feel a little bigger and harder to manage than the s7 edge. Both are great phones. I don't regret my decision at all.
Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk
If you use your phones for 2-3 years, the S7 might be slightly more future proof because of the great processor be it SD or Exynos, plus 4gb of RAM that should account for at least 2 years of usage imo, and you get the SD card storage so you would probably need to get at least the 64GB 6P in order for it to be slightly future proof.
I've owned the 6P and the 5X so I'll pipe in on this as well. The 6P is a GREAT device when it comes to updates and having the backing of the dev community. If you don't like something about the user experience, you can bet there is something out there that will allow you to modify whatever it is you're griping over. I never had a problem with the hardware and the camera was surprisingly GOOD!
It is, however, a pretty girthy device. When comparing it to the S7 Edge, it's really not even a comparison. The 6P footprint is larger and much more difficult to use one handed. I found myself having to use to do some thumb gymnastics to reach the corners and I'd like to think I have some decent sized hands.
At the end of the day, it boils down to your preference. If you can stomach TW, then get the Galaxy. If you're #TeamStock all the way then the Nexus is for you.

It just felt a lot more natural in the back and the sensor is more accurate. Not to take anything from the gs7 edge fingerprint sensor which is pretty good but definitely not as good as the nexus.
Erhh.. Still cant decide.
Nexus pros are:
- faster updates
- front facing speakers
- cheaper
Galaxy pros are:
- beautiful
- somewhat smaller and easier to handle one handed
- larger battery
- water resistant
- optical image stabilization
I live in an area where we get the Exynos model...
I hope it will be as good as the snapdragon.

Here's why: I will use it for at least 3 years, so the constant updates are a big plus. Also, even if it has lower specs then the s7, the software is much more optimized. No matter how fluid and smooth touchwiz has become, no Samsung in this world runs better then stock android on the latest nexus flagship.
And even if it has slightly lower specs then the s7, they are still more then enough for what I'm planning to use it for: Internet browsing, YouTube, Facebook, clash of clans and taking pictures (I read that the camera is great).
The reason I'll be using it this much is that the store I buy it from, here in Romania, offers the possibility to get 1 or 2 more years of warranty, aside from the 2 years the device already comes with. And if do I get extra warranty, it becomes premium warranty. This means: if my device breaks and needs to be sent for repair, they send a courier to my door to pick the product for me, free of charge and free shipping. And if they don't fix the device within 5 working days, I can get a full refund of the initial price. That's right, after let's say 3 years, when this phone will be worth around 200-300$ in used condition, I can get the full 570$ I initially payed, if they can't fix the phone.
I already did that with my nexus 10 after a year, then got enough money to get the note 3. My note still has 2 more years and a few months of warranty, in which time I'm 100% positive that it will eventually break.
The note goes to my girlfriend and I decided that I want a new phone, a premium one that I'll be using for a long time while I have the 4 years warranty.
If you can't afford an Edge, go with a 6P.
