(auto)Loading movie subs from external drive - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hy guys. It's been a year since I get my 2TB passport and I'm using it just wine with my N9005. I'm using it on KK in combination with total commander and paragon tools, however I'm curious is there any way to load subtitles since they are not auto loading in MX player? Subs are generally loading by default if they have same name as movie and they have. If I copy movie (and subtitle) to phone memory they are loading normally but doing this on external disk does not work? Is there any solution to this, I don't think this is player related?
Thanks

Hm, I've never encountered this problem with VLC or Dice.. I always use my 2TB Elements with my phone for films.
With VLC you can manually select a subtitle file as well. Is there a similar option in MX? (I don't use MX, as they pulled out the H264 codec.)

Hy ShadowLea.
Maybe I should try VLC as I was reading even BS player supports OTG functions comparing to MX player which I love. The problem is that I can't navigate manually to subtitle cause MXplayer only allows me to navigate on my phone memory, I can't enter manually location or pic/browse to it? It only sees my phone memory as option so I should copy on my phone movie, which is dumb and not an option for me (that is why I buy this 2TB drive in the first place).
BTW what kind of software combination do you use for this?
I'm now using TC + paragon plugin and it works very well for me other than that problem I previously mention which is I think player related? I don't know if Nexus media importer would be better in any way...never tried it though?

All I'm using is my harddrive and VLC. The drive is formatted as EXFAT, so it doesn't require any additional software to work. It picks up the .srt files straight away.
VLC is open source (free), so it's an easy matter of testing it to see if the problem lies with the player or somewhere else. If they don't work, you'll at least know the problem doesn't lie with the mediaplayers.

I think my problem could be a drive which is formated in NTFS mode. I tried vlc also but same situation. Those are really bad news cause I dont wont to format it an loose my data. I'm also not sure is there any other option that could emulate this and maybe provide some workaround solution?

Ah... Android doesn't get along with NTFS very well. Not at all, in fact. It's not even supposed to be able to detect an NTFS partition.
The total commander/paragon tools apps seem to have a workaround, but other apps can't read/write to NTFS. (because it's set on Enforcing.) Hence, the videoplayer simply doesn't detect the partition, and thus not the subtitle file, either. The fact that it'll play the video itself is already a miracle.
You'd need to use a custom firmware setup.
I know the pain of a reformat all too well... My 2TB drive is my daily drive, so reformatting and the backup and restore took almost 2 days. >.< (My laptop runs on windows 8, so I, too, prefer NTFS.)

Same situation with me that is why I find it hard to do formating.
I hope this is possible to fix using.maybe custom kernel or complete rom? What am I looking for exactly in kernel/rom?
Thanks.

Please help..I'm loosing it!!

I thought I fixed this by asking in previous post but obviously not.. NO MATTER HOW I ADD MUSIC to my SD card, Touch Flo Music app gives Audio Manager_eng.exe error!! Hard Reset, Soft Reset, Delete Audiomanager file, editing/resetting registry, using drag and drop, using Media Monkey..ALL no luck.
How and what do you guys do to play music via your SD card on Touch Flo music app...step by step guide most appreciated - what do I delet, what do I name folders etc...Merry Xmas
have you tried syncronising using windows media player? and if the media is on the card, you should be able to select the albums using options in the tf3d media player, if it crashes and you havent done anything that voids your warranty, try HTC support. because if a hard reset doesnt fix the problem its a problem in your rom,
what also possibly could cause it to crash is if you try to play an unsupported media file,
hope to have given you some new information or suggestions!

This is the ssimple answer.
You might want to reinstall Audio manager using a new installation file. Yours could have quite possibly become corrupt. Do a search and find an original CAB on here. I'm sure I saw it on somewhere here. Otherwise...send your phone in for the support guys to take a look. Might be worth a shot.
You were right! Now I realize it does not seem to support m4a files...removed them, still no luck...after 2 hours I found a rogue m4a file in my library...Unbelievable! I thought it would just ignore the file type rather than corrupt all??
Thank you anyway.

Nope this is not correct, all of my music (hundreds of songs) in my SD are in m4a format (AAC encoded within iTunes), they all play perfectly work perfectly, no problem whatsoever, even the artist/song/album info and cover art is working fine from m4a.
Something else is the problem here.
I just wanted to prevent missinformation, the blackstone DOES play m4a (AAC) without any problems (Main Memory or SD doesn't make a difference...)

Well, MOST of my music is in M4A files; I originally converted all my CD collection to M4A for my old Sony Walkman phone because the AAC-type format seemed to give better sound quality for a given file size compared to MP3.
And so far, it's only been one rogue file that has given me problems on the HD, although I noticed that it does tend to mess up the playing order.
Maybe there's something different in the codecs that you are using or something. I seem to recall that I used Nero to encode mine.
I'm confused then..would the fact that I use a Mac be the issue - Itunes purchases - DRM Free ( though I use Bootcamp to do all music transfers etc..).

that's the problem of this phone. it corrupts the xme library in some memory cards that it has problems with. like the one i have. 1gig fat32 formatted. gives so much tension every time i have to put data in it. but works flawlessly in Nokia's.
Not sure if it is a phone problem.. Since I have a 4 GB memory card with approx 2.5 GB Music files. never had any problems whatsoever. BTW, before 'putting' the data, make sure it plays in your PC.
it plays of course :/

It depends on the format of the video / audio file, whether it should play in your mobile or not. To play all kind of videos, you need TCPMP (free) or CorePlayer (Paid). Like you can't play divx or avi file in WMP or the HTC Video Player.
In case of audio files, AFAIK, AAC files are not supported, again for a full range of audio file playability you need some professional player like PocketMusic.
damn...kill me but don't think that i am that much of a fool that i don't know what to do and what files can be played or not... i got core player from the awesomeness way cracked, installed and deleted. cuz i don't need it. i can easily convert and put files into my mobile. either way this problem my love isn't related to formats/**** etc.

[Q] music player to manage folders from mounted hdd?

I have a portable hdd with about 90gb of music stored to it. I mount it to my rooted a500, and it works fine, to an extent. I can select a song, which it will play, but I can't find a music player which is able to use the /sda1 mount to manage the music folders, only from the SD cards.
Does anyone here have a solution, or know of a player that will do this for me?
Thanks in advance.
Same here. Im waiting for my iconia 500 and i have a 320gb external hdd with music+playlist (.zpl, which ill prob convert to .m3u if i have to). I'll need a player to handle my music and playlists via USB. Any recommendations?
Did you try Power Amp?
And I wouldn't search for sda but instead go to the source (/mnt/usb_drive or whatever it's called). It works fine from my thumb drive so I don't see why it wouldn't work my a HDD.
I did try Poweramp. In the select folders option, there are only selections for mnt/sdcard/xxx and mnt/external_SD/xxx. Since the hdd is formatted in ntfs, it is mounted as mnt/sda1, not mnt/USB_storage.
I could try having the hdd formatted as fat, but I have found the mnt/USB_storage to be very unreliable. It seems to need a reset very often in order to read the contents of a thumb drive, and also with the large amount of files, also seems to read them very slowly.
I bit the bullet and formatted my hdd to fat32. I used fat32formatter, nice and quick.
The a500 needed a reboot to read the files on the hdd, and I find disconnecting and re-connecting it, does require another re-boot to read again.
Poweramp and winamp both are no able to read the hdd, but took about 4 hours to scan the files and make a library from them.
I haven't added new music to the library, I'm really hoping that it won't need to re-scan all the files again. Fingers crossed.
Also looking for a solution to this, let, me know if anyone has a good organized music player.

I'm using Usb Mount All from the market which creates a symlink to mnt/sdcard/sda. All my apps can see and write on sda that way.
That's why I prefer Mount all over Drive mount.
Thanks bbivk, that app is exactly what I should have been using, it's so easy now.

[Q] Does Nexus Media Importer / org cable / usb flash work on Nexus 10

Can someone please tell me if they have been able to get to watch movies, pictures etc using a org cable, USB flash and nexus media importer? I am looking to buy the nexus 10 but will only buy this if I can get a USB flash to work on this device. I have a lot of music and movies and so its very important. I cannot afford the 32gb plus streaming is not an option.
Can someone who has the nexus 10 please let us know, because I am sure it's on everyone's mind. If it does work, can you also let us know if the quality of the video gets impacted by watching it through nexus media importer.
I would also want to avoid rooting if possible
Yes, Nexus Media Importer works with an OTG cable. I have been using it since I got my N10.
Can you play the movies with the app of your choice through the external storage?
Has anyone got a file explorer to work though, Media importer works but only for certain files.

Can you play apps off of the USB?

NMI doesn't handle anything but media.
Currently there is NO solution to access OTG +RW for general access.
http://www.reviewlagoon.com/?p=810
I'll update that as soon as someone comes up with a solution.
Using a 16gb flash drive. The only reason I haven't tried anything bigger is because I don't have it
It runs everything just fine though. Through nmi.

I'm afraid it's a little complicated with 4.2. Google have made some changes for the multi-user stuff and now even if you mount a device manually it seems you can't access the files from a file explorer.
I have spent a good while playing with it so far and it's refusing to allow me to chown and chmod the directories so for now, I can't get it working.
From what I have read, Chainfire has a solution but it won't be available via his StickMount app until he is done updating his paid apps.

Nope, I didn't say that at all.
I believe NMI still works, but it uses an alternative method.
The reason is probably works is because the memory card space is restricted by process, so since NMI mounts the drive, it can also read it. If my file manager could mount the drive, it could read it. But instead if I mount it in terminal, it sees a different virtual folder compared to es file explorer.
Basically each app gets given its own rose tinted view of the file system,it can only see and write things that belong to it.

No apology necessary, bare in mind nexus media importer will only do certain file types, full usb OTG is off the cards until the permissions stuff from 4.2 gets sorted out.

Sorry, I'm forgetting the topic of the thread. For multimedia NMI will work no problem, you just can't use it (I'm told) for managing your other files, that is, ones that aren't classed as media.

I've had no problems playing any videos. Mostly because I have MXPlayer, BSPlayer, and VLC Beta; so if one can't play a file the next one surely can.
The only problem is DTS codec not working, but it seems I've figured out that problem with VLC. Good luck!

So when that directory of the video files pop up upon connecting the external storage as in your video, you can choose which player to play them with? Can you play the files FROM the external storage just as smooth?
Here's how to get DTS working with MX Player:

USB flash drive to watch movies/connect keyboard with OTG Cable on Nexus 10

I keep seeing posts of people that use the Nexus Media Importer application to connect their flash drives to their Nexus 10 in order to see files. I just wondering if this has worked for everyone..I saw that some people were having issues...as am I. Whenever I connect my flash drive i can view the files but can't play the videos...............and absolutely nothing happens when I connect my keyboard through usb-OTG.
Any thoughts???

What happens when you click on the files when viewing in NMI? What files are you trying to play? Have you verified that you can play the files directly from your nexus?
Maybe with the video player you are using it doesnt support the file you are trying to watch? Has worked for me so far, connecting SD card, flash drive and HDD.

Try StickMount https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&hl=de
It works like a charm for me but unfortunatly you have to be rooted to use it. Also I think the N10 has problems dealing with NTFS out of the box so try FAT32 or ext3/4.
Good luck.
There are links on the StickMount playstore page to download files that allow full usage (r/w) of both exFAT and NTFS formatted volumes. The current version of StickMount works 100% for me.
Nexus Media Importer works great - no need to Root!

Nexus Media Importer (vrs 4.0.3 ) works perfectly for my N10 - YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE ROOTED!! I've only used FAT32 USB sticks and it works as advertised and it's awesome Make sure you download the paid version ($2.95 or so CND). Expand the Overview in the Google Play Description by clicking MORE and there are youtube videos showing the proper process, it works great and I'm thrilled to get the extra space and watch movies right from the USB stick using MX Player or copy movies, pics, music etc. to internal storage if I want to. Excellent app - five stars! I will be trying a NTFS Formated stick so I can use > 4Gb files (mkv prob) but haven't yet. It does claim to handle NTFS formatted drives.
