So, Android M has been out for more than two hours now and so far there is not a single topic/thread asking when will we finally get it?
I mean, the dozing stuff is quite cool. Too bad we have (likely producing the exact same results) Stamina mode already.
But the automatic app data backup is quite amazing (http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...eynote-automatic-app-data-backup-and-restore/).
So, what do you guys think? Will we even get the update in the end? What are the features you would really like to have it for?
I do think we'll eventually get Android M on our Z3's but we'll probably be waiting around a year or so (roughly 6 months till most nexus devices get it then another 6 months or so while Sony fine tunes and tests). Let's not forget today's release is just a developer preview and a lot of new functions aren't even working yet.
I'm looking forward to having dark theme setting available, keyboard undo/redo shortcuts (sounds useful) and granular app permissions. Sd card also appears to be back in favour with the new adoption feature and battery historian v2 should give us much better stats
I reckon Sony will release Android M around April / May 2016.

Yes, the app data up to 25MB per app. Backed up to GDrive.
Myself, I would be pretty shocked if we get official M from Sony. We just barely went from KK to LP and I am not so happy with 5.0.2 and I want 5.1.x ASAP.
Man lol, I'm still enjoying Kit Kat for our Z3.. Don't even look forward to an update as the phone keeps chugging along fine. If M does come though, I wouldn't mind it.
Hopefully we get Android M. If not that would be quite disappointing. Also hope that they go with Macaroon for Android M name
I think it will be Marshmallow
But the screenshots are disappointing. Looks exactly like Lollipop.
I don't like the new way Google makes their Software. There are too much updates and changes so the modding and Developer Community will die slowly.
I like the new look and feel of Android L. And I will be very very happy if there would be Android M for the Z3.
Wasn't there the guarantee from Sony, that they would upgrade to two major releases?
Android M preview is now out for the Z3, Z3 Compact, Z3 Tablet Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z1, Z1 Compact, Z Ultra, E3, M2, T2 Ultra and T3: http://developer.sonymobile.com/kno...eveloper-preview-for-unlocked-xperia-devices/

Probably because M hasn't been out for more than two hours. M won't be out until late Fall (October/November). Just like the L developer preview came at I/O but L didn't go live until early November.
However, Google pushed more of the M dev preview source to AOSP than they did for L dev preview (there was no way anyone could even think about building AOSP for L-preview), but it is still fairly incomplete. So don't expect anything other than proof-of-concept hacks that aren't usable for a daily driver until sometime after October/November when M goes live officially. For example, the "Now On Tap" feature seems to be completely missing from AOSP in the M-preview branches.

It depends on how much more Google changes internally before M goes live in October/November. So far changes from L to make AOSP "m-preview" work weren't significant, but that's partly because a lot of the "M-preview" source is closer to L than to M as the source is incomplete.

90% certain they're using the same blobs as L. Haven't had time to look at the M build info yet, honestly not really planning on bothering with it vs. fixing remaining AOSP L issues.

Greeting, if anyone knows when it will be available to Android 5.0 for Xperia Z3?
Something was discussed, it should come this year or next (Q1/2015)... It would be good if Sony starts thinking forward about the new android L...
Or we'll get a new update on Z3, while out new Z4..

LOOL.... Nexus get out 6 of november, lollipop will land few days later on older nexus and GPE version of phone.
So it means sony have just one and half month to bring it to Z3 if they want to realease it for Z3 series, and you say its slow?
And for compare
Code:
HTC One (M7) - Android 5.0 Lollipop update in 90 days
HTC One (M8) - Android 5.0 Lollipop update in 90 days
HTC One mini - Android 5.0 Lollipop update, schedule TBA
HTC One mini 2 - Android 5.0 Lollipop update, schedule TBA
Motorola have 4-5 phones, samsung few phones, lg 2 maybe and sony will update entire Z series.

Chance for better 3rd party camera apps?
Since several of the features in 5.0 look quite interesting for photography purposes, any guesses if these could be used for better 3rd party camera apps?
As seen on http://www.android.com/versions/lollipop-5-0/ :
A range of new professional photography features for Android Lollipop that let you
Capture full resolution frames around 30 fps
Support raw formats like YUV and Bayer RAW
Control capture settings for the sensor, lens, and flash per individual frame
Capture metadata like noise models and optical information

Sony states 5.0 will be released beginning of 2015. So assuming its end of Jan or early Feb then it is 3 months from the release of 5.0 to nexus devices. This could be the time frame for all the other OEM's except motorola which might release it in december. I would call that fast. I knew this before buying the device so i am not really bothered about it.
At least they have announced an intention to update those phones. Unlike Samsung...

So will there be any changes for an update for Z3 to Lollipop? When I had a Samsung/HTC update to 4.0, there weren't any major changes. Will the Z3 be able to run ART with even better battery saving capabilities? Anyone know what features might be added? Im interested to know if there will be any major changes, or if I should just wait for a Z4/Nexus 6 that will have the latest features instead of getting a slimmed down update.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Ah, yes, but because of the frequency of new models being released, it's easy to forget that the Z and Tablet Z actually only came out about 18 months ago - so are pretty much within the '18 month' window of getting supported.
I actually don't want Android 5 / L before it has stabilized. KitKat needed 5 iterations to settle (remember all the connectivity issues up and including 4.4.3?!).
Hence, completly agree with zoomee, let Nexus users do some testing and Google do some fixes first
Meanwhile, the Z2 STILL doesn't have 4.4.4
Google announced the Android M update at I/O 2015 keynote. Android M takes Android L and optimizes the **** out of it.
- Better battery life
- Android Pay
- Fingerprint support
- USB Type-C
- Enhanced Google Now
- App Permissions
That's a power-packed features list, eh? More about Android M features here. Also, the Android M Developer Preview is already available.
I wonder if the Xperia Z1 would ever get the Android M update, seeing that the Android 5.1 Lollipop update itself won't arrive until August 2015.
highly doubt it!
Yes, an the Android XL also.
If the z had received lollipop, maybe z1 will get android m.......should be possible....
I also highly doubt Z1 will get it. As of right now, I only hope Z1 will receive a fully stable no bug (no battery drain, no sound vollume problem, etc.) 5.1. Besides, I don't think Z1 can get much benefits from M anyway (like those fingerprint support or usb-c or even Android Pay since it's clearly not available everywhere)

Sure an update is always welcomed. It's just that we shouldn't really get our hopes up. In my opinion, It's already Sony's best effort for Z1 if it get 5.1. By the time M is official released, Z1 will probably be way over the 18 month support period by Sony. But who know, just my guess, maybe Sony will surprise us (in a good way )
BTW, is there any dev working on porting Android M developer preview for the Xperia Z1?
I'd like Android M, but if we don't get it then 5.1 had better solve the issue with the mobile radio staying active and causing ridiculous amounts of battery drain.
I guess one thing to keep in mind is that the Z got 5.0.2, so perhaps they will only drop support for the Z given how different the hardware is, while the Z1, Z Ultra and Z1C all share very similar hardware. From what I can tell, the hardware hasn't changed all that much since the Z Ultra aside from the Z3+/Z4 which is using an octa-core S810 compared to the quad-core S800/S801 inside most of the rest of the Z series. Whether that has much sway on development time I wouldn't have any idea.
If they can include Auto Backup for Apps http://developer.android.com/preview/backup/index.html Also using your micro SD card as internal storage.... http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...or-accessed-normally-with-no-additional-apps/
That would be great for those who don't root their handset
Even Z can get updated to 5.1 i think Z1 can at least get 2 more major updates. So yes
Of course not. I understand we all love our devices, but guys, it's just marketing. However, let's hope someone ports it to our Z1, otherwise, we may need to buy something new in the near future.

If they go with Vanilla Android, I'm happy. The current Sony UI is alright, very light, but there things here and there that aren't very well thought. Spacing between some icons, alignment, etc. I'd rather see Sony add their features without changing the UI.

The idea is a lighter, closer to stock Android look I guess. If the screen shots shown so far are accurate, Sony will start having a UI similar to a Nexus phone with Sony features on top of it.
Hopefully we'll receive more information starting from tomorrow. I've signed up the first day this news came up, just crossing my fingers now. Seems like Sony wants to take a GPE approach on our devices. Would be really nice. Hopefully this means faster development and pushing out codes for aosp which also means that we are getting closer to fix the fish eye bug that all aosp ROMs and cm ROMs has for our devices. Either way that's just me wishing for the beat of our future.

They probably don't want to repeat an as sloppy start as with LP, so I'd guess somewhere between Jan-Mar, but the fact that they're moving closer to Vanilla may affect that..
Personally, I hope that they will expand the theming capabilities of their current theme engine. It's already quite good but being able to theme more the official way (no rooting or modding just swapping the themes on the go) would be great.
You think that next update will be closer to Vanilla from Sony's Android™ Concept??
Kinda pity the Z1 users. Their device is more than capable to run Marshmallow. But we're not here to talk about them. I'm kinda not that excited about the Marshmallow update. I just want Sony to release a bugfree update in just one release. Is that really too hard to ask for?

I would have hope if it wasn't for the fact that we don't have an official CM13 yet. All the builds of the CM12.1 are even nightlies and don't offer the audio and camera quality that Stock has. Let's be real, Sony sucks at open sourcing and the community can't do magic
Sure it sucks, but why is anyone surprised? The Z3 launched September of 2014, almost two years ago.
You really can't blame Sony, two years is pretty standard for updates. Even Google only gives two years of guaranteed updates for the Nexus line.
iirc the concept developers are trying to release the kernel sources, which would allow the devs on xda to build better roms.

The Z3 is an really nice device. Sad to see that Sony say goodbye to us. I hope customs ROMS can help.
I have Android Nougat 7 Preview 4 running on my Xperia Z3 (and it spontaneously reboots 24 times a day which is a major problem that hopefully the real version will fix). I mean how can they NOT release a real version of Android Nougat?
Well the user base did come together and made Sony change their minds about Xperia M2 and lollipop update... At first it was cut out after which Sony later decided to roll out lollipop for that model...
Sent via Xperia Z3
I think z3 shouldn't use mm or lollipop rom. Because the device will be very hot and it'll make touch screen died. I know someboby have to replace thier touch screen.
Sony cant release N for z3. Google/ Qualcomm removed msm8974 support from aosp N kernel. Sony would have to revert these commits which is the legal issues that the concept Dec was talking my about on g+
