M8 vs M8S camera functionallity - One (M8) General

So I had a chance to play with a M8S at the weekend to compare camera modes, they still have features like backlight!
The overall performance would not make me change to the M8S bits annoying as hell they still have features we now are missing.

It's probably no interest to current M8 users, but it has some nice features, like the 13mp camera (a duo one at that), 64bit processor, slightly bigger battery and still the lovely build/style of the M8. It's a nice option for a cheaper alternative to the M9 that had some improvements on the M8.

Yeah I know what your saying? But the point of the post was if they can leave features on the m8s then why not on the m8?

Were these features that were removed after upgrading to Lollipop?

It was still there after lollipop but was removed after the last ccamera update.

The Best Phone of the Year...killed by a poor camera

I was really excited to see the spec for the M8.
The spec turned out pretty decent, but the camera.....unbelievable. How can a smart phone be shipped with a poor camera....a flagship smartphone that is.
The Galaxy S5 and the Z2 among others will absolutely kill this phone in sales.
The build of the M8 is beautiful though.....such a huge mistake with this poor choice of camera for the 2nd year running,
you are missing the point.
if you dont have the phone you shouldnt post in here. if you have it and face any problem with the camera you are welcomed. do you think HTC is dumb to create such thing? the desire have 13mp camera if HTC believes that 13MP of desire is better for the one they wouldnt hesitate to apply it to the HTC one too! but this phone with this poor camera you claim won many prices for the best phone of 2013 and now its featured in DUAL camera. this thread should be closed and users who are creating useless threads should be BANNED!!

The camera in m8 does not have optical image stabilization like the m7.
No OIS equals blurry pics unless you walk around with a tripod.
For the moment I am happy with my m7.

OP, do you have the phone? Can you provide examples of this poor camera? If so, we'll gladly reopen the thread. Otherwise, conjecture based upon what you've read about the phone isn't really helpful.

[Q] Z3 Compact vs Galaxy Alpha

I live in the US and have no access to the Z3C to compare to the Alpha in person but spent some time debating between the two. I currently have a Moto X (2013) which I love and would keep, if the camera weren't so awful. I was disappointed when the new Moto X came out as I was hoping it keep the same dimensions and dramatically improve the camera. Unfortunately, the camera, while improved, doesn't go as far as I'd like and the size completely misses the mark IMO. Thus, I was left with getting the Alpha or getting the Z3C if I wanted a better camera.
DXOmark ranked the Z3 as a tie with the Galaxy S5 and Z2 camera. They haven't tested the Alpha yet, but I've heard it's not as good as the GS5. Thus, the Z3C must have a better camera than the Alpha, but I've read several reports and reviews saying that the Z3C camera is only ok, not great. So far I can't find any head to head camera comparisons between the Alpha and Z3C. Surely either is better than the Moto X (2013), but that's not saying much.
Having previously owned a GS2 and GS4 I've found that Samsung phones work pretty well for about 12 months, then become very buggy and laggy. I blame Touchwiz. Another reason I really like the Moto X and it's nearly stock implementation of Android. I know nothing about Xperia phone though, I've heard that it's better than Touchwiz, but I've also heard that the QC of the hardware isn't as high as it could be. For those who are familiar with Xperia phones, can I expect to get 3 years of frustration free use out of the Z3C (I think the Moto X is capable of that, though I haven't gotten there yet) or is going to be a similar experience to Samsung?
I've already ordered the Z3C, but some of camera reports I've read and QC issues I've read about since then have me wondering if I should have picked something else, most likely the Galaxy Alpha.
I would imagine others are interested in this comparison as well. I will post my thoughts when my Z3C arrives, and compare it head to head for the benefit of others. If anyone else has access to both or experience to lend I would be interested in hearing those thoughts as well.

Dont buy a samsung device ever. I own a galaxy s5 and it sucks. May be a galaxy with unlocked bootloader would be good, But with touchwiz its crap. I got it through ATT and the bootloader is locked. So do some research before buying samsung devices. And dont buy from a us carrier if possible
There's a bunch of "raw" sample pictures on the net. I believe they're all legit and they come from big review sites anyways.
You can get an idea by looking at them (if you don't know any, look at the gsmarena reviews for example).
Generally the Z3C pictures have more details and look more natural, the Alpha pictures are more processed and have warmer colors. You can fix that in the Z3C manually if you like warmer colors (most people do and thus most people may go for the alpha because of that) for example by setting the white balance higher.
Other than that the camera is in the Z3, Z3C, Z2, Z1, Z1C is very similar and produces very similar results.

the auto function is apparently terrible. you have to use the manual settings to take good pictures.
i also think its camera is not much good as i read in other reviews.
I saw a Galaxy Alpha in the AT&T store today and it felt nice, but I like the Z3c better. Feels better in the hand IMO.

Keep in mind the Galaxy Alpha has a tiny battery, and also it's physically bigger. Plus touchwiz. I would pay extra NOT to have touchwiz (source: have owned 6 Samsung Android devices)

Because they used auto mode. Against auto mode of iPhone, there is no comparison. iPhone wins. Manual mode is a different story. It unlocks the power of this camera.

That's the problem with a lot of reviews. They just use the auto mode which makes good pictures but doesn't unlock the full potential of the cam. I strolled around town yesterday making some pictures, comparing auto and manual modes and I'm really happy with the camera. Changing the white balance in manual mode makes a lot of difference!
I'm not an expert but for me ease of use is the most important thing with smartphone cameras. And the software and of course the dedicated button make taking pictures extremely smooth. You just hit that button while taking it out of your pocket and the important settings aren't buried deep in menus. You're ready to go instantly and it's never awkward to try and hit that soft button.

You're correct, if you look at the full picture, the Alpha photo was taken on a much cloudier day. That said, several comments here and further reading of reviews have mostly laid to rest my concern about the photo quality.
I would still like to know if Xperia devices have historically held up well and continued to operate well. As I mentioned in my original post, Samsung devices tend to get very buggy after about year, in my experience. My wife and I both had GS2's and in addition software bugginess our gps effectively stopped working after about a year.

I've used a number of Android phones, from the Galaxy Nexus to the HTC One (M7) to the Z2 and now the Z3 Compact and I've spent plenty of time playing on a friend's Samsung Galaxy S5 and Nexus 5.
Based on that experience, I say yes. Sony's UI is better than Samsung's, by far. In fact, honestly, given the choice between Sony's UI and stock Android, I actually rather prefer Sony's aside from that stupid "What's New" button, but that can easily be disabled through ADB without root. You see, Sony's UI is nothing more than a very minor tweak of stock Android, and some of those tweaks actually make a lot of sense.
Unlike Samsung's Touchwiz garbage and HTC's Sense (to a much lesser extent), Sony's UI isn't filled with all kinds of useless garbage. They do include some goofy apps, mostly related to the camera (AR Fun? Really?), but those can easily be disabled without root. The UI itself is slim, sleek, and fast.
About the only utility feature they added on top of stock Android was "small apps", which is actually kind of a nice feature to have, since it allows a certain degree of multiwindow multitasking, which isn't generally something Android offers.
Yes the GSMarena pics are on different days, but the lighting difference isnt the only factor. they have pictures with controlled lighting as well - but they're not as nice for comparison as outdoor pictures IMO because they only talk to specialists.
you can see the issues with the GS5 algorithms and the lesser sensor in the outdoor pic, and you can see the Z3's own limitations as well.
Samsung's drivers always have nicer-to-the-eye sharpness correction and color correction than the Z3. The superior auto (default mode) of the Z3 does a bad job or doing that as well, which is a con really.
But you can go manual and even without touching any setting in manual mode it takes better pictures most of the time than superior auto (yea good job on that one sony lol).
If you edit the image in anything decent you can fix the color balance, white balance, sharpness correction and its actually looking very good. Only the lumias seem to take better pictures (albeit i didnt look too much at the iphone6)
of course, again, its unfortunate that you've to go through manual mode and/or external software to get better shots while other phones can do that by default. I think sony should call manual mode smth like "protune" (this is what GoPro does) and have the default over saturated, sharpened, etc (which they should just call the default mode instead of superior auto .
Would please everyone.

HTC One M8 Eye ownership

Hi, traded my trusty ol Nexus 5 for the be spoken M8 Eye. I have been a droid loyalist since the gingerbread days, have used HTC legend, desire , evo3d, galaxy notes, s4, Xperia ultra , nexus..but I swear by God this the best buy yet.
The HTC phones are sure built like strong German cars, and comparing to new iPhone 6, yes, m8 just tops it on handling and finish. The i6 feels like the older HTC one x.
Sound clarity is beautiful from the stereo speakers, SQ is there but it could have done with more loudness.
Out of box it came preloaded with KK 4.4.4 and the SenseUI is buttery smooth topped with good battery life.
Camera quality is all good, very snappy in locking focus unlike nexus5. My camera usage is very basic so not commenting much.
Happy to be part of XDA..thanks!!

The Eye is great with the 13MP camera, I just understand why HTC omitted NFC and the Infrared port on it.
The m8 eye is a good looking device ! I like it...but I won't trade my current m8 unless it brakes jaja if it does I might get the m8 eye

I read it... Lol But doesn't say, new camera hardware... Way better than the old m8. ?
I'm just curious, cause they can make it a thousand mega pixels... But still need better hardware for the pics to actually be "better". Know what I mean.
Able to print or view a bigger pic, doesn't make it a better pic.
I still use an 8 MP Kodak camera, cause the pictures are awesome. And I don't need to blow them up. ?

Couldn't agree more about no need to blow up photos, and I have no interest in making posters with my camera photos. I think the pics the original m8 takes are great, but they needed to make the eye version to appease all those who felt more megapixels equals better. There are also those who swear their pics are washed out on the original, but that hasn't been my experience.
I asked cause my wife might be interested in an M8...and was curious if I should look for an eye... But I think the original M8 is more than good enough.... For a phone camera anyway.
?
It's not just about quality...it's the ability to crop since we don't have optical zoom.
Let's say we only needed 30% of what's in the frame and you crop it tight to get rid of the unwanted background or foreground....your 4mp image just became a webcam resolution image that's only gonna be good for mms!
HTC One M8
Yes, agreed.... But that's for you. Your photo needs, right. Me, I point and click... And that's all I want/expect out of my phone.
More important things, I use my camera.
And quality is pretty important... Especially for what your describing. Even with many MP, blowing up a poor quality pic is just enhancing the poor quality.
IMHO. ?

HTC One M9 Camera Compared to that of the iPhone 6

The camera is the one thing that worries me the most when I think about whether or not to get the M9 and the more samples I see of it the less convinced I am (even more so when I see Galaxy S6 samples). I really am keen to see full reviews of the device to be sure...

I know, which is why I say I'm waiting for the full reviews to come out.
The camera has never been a stong selling point on the HTC One. If this is very important to you, then i definitely would go with the S6. Considering all the pros and cons, the HTC One M9 is still the best fit for me.
On the plus side the iPhone looked better than BOTH the M9 and the GS6. The GS6 shots were too warm while the M9 shots just weren't good. They are mediocre, which is unfortunate and sadly reminds me of using a Sony Xperia Z3 in terms of color reproduction, clarity and image.
Good sigh of relief that Samsung's camera can be good with tweaks versus the iPhone you can take out and just point and shoot.
M9 seemed to have higher than usual exposure settings resulting in slightly whited out images (especially the first one in that link), nothing that can't be corrected software side by proper calibration - at this stage I wouldn't be concerned about the camera.
I'm sure that everyone will be happy their M9 cameras (rear and front ). Not sure if it could best S6 but iphone 6 will not be an issue.
Have both s6 edge and m9 on order, and hope and think they will do better with final software. Use the iPhone 6+ as my daily device atm and the camera is very solid. So even with the new "camera" or optics I think both HTC and Samsung have to work to beat the iPhone, as it just do good pictures most of the time and easy and fast camera ui/focus.

Glad you said that, I thought it was just me, apart from the one of the news stand, which on my monitor appeared quite blurred, verging on out of focus even, I just preferred the "look" or feel of the HTC pictures. In all honesty, none of them are poor at all and I would be happy with using any of them as daily shooters to be fair.
One hopes that both
Samsung and HTC don't increase the price by another 10k like they did last year..........actually if they do then Note4 suddenly becomes a interesting option..

I read most of the comments before I saw the photos.
To be honest I didn't find and big differences between iPhone and M9 and I was expecting bad photos from the iPhone.
Having in mind that the iPhone has a final software and also that Apple always auto-enhances its photos, I don't see any problems with M9 in these samples.

Yes, the M9's screen is markedly better than my M8. It's the same pixel density, but it's more bright, and does not wash out as much outside as the M8's can.

Not really. Comparing photos online is a variable of what monitors are being used, etc. The pixel densities don't match, the shots have to be of the same subjects. I haven't seen the S6 samples, I can only compare images between my M8, an HTC Re, and a Nexus 7

Yes I have bought it.
In comparism with Mix 2 by Xiaomi...Nubia is faster, the camera is better and the recorded sound is better as well. On the other hand the video stabilisation, speakers, battery and fingerprint reader is better on Xiaomi.
What I love on Z17s is its features. You can do many things such as swiping between apps, closing apps, sliding down and up to maximaze or minimze brightness and many other things which I really miss on Xiaomi and other brands.
Antutu score of my 8/128 is about 180k. I think there is not a better device on the market in terms of performance. The camera could be a little bit better but otherwise, a really great phone!

maybe someone is still interested in this device...it is possible to install the google camera mod on the z17s. Version v5.1.018 modded by sculshady works very well.
