Just tried it on my unlocked Z1
results:
I flashed the TA update as I was supposed to do and EMMA said that nothing went wrong
Flashed twrp recovery (fastboot flash recovery)
pressed power and volume down -> phone vibrated -> let go of power -> sony logo shows up and phone boots normally...
Am I missing something?

Which devices are compatible? For now, just those with Cortex-A7 processors. Those are:
•Xperia T2 Ultra
•Xperia T3
•Xperia M2
•Xperia E3

Actually you are wrong. According to developer.sonymobile.com the Z1 product line is also supported:
Supported devices
With the latest software provided through our Flash tool for Xperia devices, recovery mode is available for Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra, and Xperia T3 devices with unlocked boot loader.

However I'm no Sony developer and I'm facing the same issue.
Xperia Z Ultra user here and the same result, device is booting normally when holding power and vol-. Maybe because the recoveries are made to work on FOTAKernel partition and they won't work on normal recovery partition?
Regards

That sounds interesting [emoji106] But do you think also the recovery images without boot?
I don't know how things are on Z1, but on ZU we have TWRP which can be flashed to FOTAKernel partition, so it can be booted on custom roms and it survives flashing custom roms. The thing is, the recovery is packed with FOTAKernel ramdisk so it still can be functional and maybe when we flash it to normal recovery partition and try to boot from it, the device don't know what to do because of the FOTAKernel ramdisk packed with it? Seems like this could be the reason but I am not an expert (15 yrs old stud can't know much about it ), just presuming. If so, recoveries have to be rebuilt to work now.
Regards
OK, yes for Z1 we have an unofficial TWRP 2.8 build to use with FOTAKernel partition. Perhaps it's the same as you described for ZU. BTW., I'm a 16 yo student, so can't know much either [emoji13]

It seems to work for me now! Flashed a random recovery to the FOTAKernel partition of my Z1 (ROCKZ1L kernel) and I had a twrp recovery on the recovery partition. Steps after that:
Press volume down and power and wait for vibration then release power and when the sony logo shows up and the purple led goes on release volume down and the recovery should boot!

Ehm.. Are you sure you didn't just flash a kernel with builtin TWRP recovery? Thats something different and has nothing to with the new bootloader, actually that's what we used to flash a recovery before the update...

But can you tell me how exactly you flashed it? Via FLashTool or via fastbbot flash recovery?

Possible but I remembered that my kernel only starts the recovery if the volume down button is tapped every second
and I flashed it via adb shell as fastboot has no access to the fotakernel
just copy the img over to your sdcard and do:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/FOTAKernel
actually there is a recovery img in the latest aosp build for amami, but after flashing the whole rom it bootloops and the recovery is not possible to access
For locked bl also ?
Because i see in the video only unlocked bl !
Bye bye DRM keys or not ?
U have to wait for prebuilt recovery by devs with needed changes or use fxp builds. For now it doesn't work like all thinking.
BTW, for unlocked Bootloader.
Good news, as @dkionline said, recoveries from AOSP builds from fxp works fine here on Z Ultra for example, but they are just pure AOSP ones and for me on ZU, the recovery menu is not visible, there is a Sony logo, then the Android with exclamation mark and pressing Power and Vol+ (on my Nexus 5 it brings the menu) just leaves you with a blank screen.

Hi
my M2 is unlocked, with open device kernel. I have a CM recovery.img but there is not backup/recovery option in it. So I wanted to know if it is possible for someone to build a twrp recovery.img for the open device kernel
Thank in advance

What if the device recovery part is corrupted with no access to recovery one cannot flash rom RIGHT ? . I know fastboot command is the answer BUT. A half novices won't be familiar with those commands.
I looking for a dedicated flashtool just like Xperia flashtool for Sony devices and SP flashtool for mtk based devices.
Sir
I have been asking around this question and I wanted to mention it here (hopefuly I am not too much out of line)
latest build OREO 13march2018 , xperia XZ Kagura F8332 & Xperia XZs Kayeki G8232 is 41.3.A.2.107 ( both having Kernel Version )
on 13MARCH OBHT WERE ON 41.3.A.2.99
on 1MAR2018 both were on 41.3.A.2.75 &
DURING FEB2018 both XZ / XZs were on build 41.3.A.2.58
BOTH DEVICE ARE ON FIRMWARE 41.3.x.x
--------
I was wandering what if XZ - F8332 BUILD 39.0.A.3.30 ( Android 6.01) is flashed on G8232 (both Dual) to extract TA.img via Dirtycow script.
what will happend if XZ android 6 flashed on XZs ?
1. device will freeze on logo (recoverable )
2. device will bootloop (recoverable )
3. device get stuck at boot (black screen) (soft brick)
4. boot get corrupted and device is DONE (hard brick) (wont boot ever) (pc wont recognize any key combinations or will read it as XZ only)
5. XZs will boot in to system with crashing popups for various processes, but I will be able to manage enabling usb debugging and extracting TA.img via dirtycow script
6. what will be the name of the file? TA_G8232 _ABCDEF_07-Mar-171608-1783.img ORR TA_F8332 _ABCDEF_07-Mar-171608-1783.img
7. if its TA_F8332 _ABCDEF_07-Mar-171608-1783.img , then relocking bootloader with this file name, wont BRICK the G8232 FOR GOOD ?
any thoughts plz ?
Code:
the universal TA script has line 22 reading as
TAIMG="TA_${DEVICE}_${SERIAL}_$(date -u +%Y%m%d-%H%M).img"
this "DEVICE" is firmware or actually hardware?
anyone ?
