Revisiting high-contrast browsing - Nook Touch General

One thing about Opera Mobile: stuff tends to look muddy, especially news sites which can be print intensive. If you're using NoRefresh or FastMode the dithering compounds the issue.
There's an old post here which takes a stab at addressing this issue. I haven't done anything new with it, although this is the first time I've gotten it to work and I'm impressed. You might be too. I ended up using the css file in post #6 by XDA user carpeVideo. You lose a little of the decoration from some websites, a few solid or colored bars here and there, but the text contrast is vastly improved, IMO, even with NoRefresh or FastMode.
A hint: the reason I failed with this a few years ago is that I couldn't figure out how to get the right path for the local css file. I must have "duh"ed out on step #6 given in post #1. Who would have thought that would be the way to locate the file?
Anyway, you might give it a try if you've sometimes wished for a higher-contrast text display in Opera Mobile like you already have in the Reader. If you decide against it, you just go back to the same place in opera:config and touch the default button by the Local css entry.

Weird PIE Problem

If I try to search anything on Google Images, all I get is a blank page.
In single column view, I get everything except the pictures i.e. search field, page numbers, other little graphics etc.
In default view, I get a total blank page.
In desktop view I get a blank page again but I also a horizontal scrollbar with it.
The odd thing is that if I view the source of the results page, it's all there, it just doesn't load at all. I have checked by installing Opera and Google Images displays fine but I don't want to keep Opera.
Any ideas on what's causing this?
Thanks
Anyone have any ideas?
Sounds obvious but you have got PIE set to display images haven't you (Menu-View-Show Pictures).
Sorry if that sounds patronising but it usually is fogetting the obvious
Sounds to me like PIE is a bit screwed, either that or your registry settings are a bit fubared...
Personally I like to use both Opera and PIE, because PIE can load SWFs (provided you've installed the PPC Flash Player 7 cab, of course) so I can get my Weebl and Bob fix, but Opera is just so much better at rendering pages, and its download manager is far superior... And it feels less clunky... And it can do FTP... and... well, just use both side by side for a while and you'll realise it's not a bad investment
Weebl and bob on the phone, what a fantastic idea. <off to load Flash 7>
apologies for my previous post, when I wrote it my phone connection wasn't working so I couldn't try it out. I also am experiencing exactly the same problem as described. Would say it's most likely down to PIE not being able to interpret the script used by the Google Images page.
Yeah, i agree!

But why on some devices and not others? I used to be able to browse perfectly on my JAM.
Anyway, I wanted to avoid a reset but it looks like the only way it might fix whatever's gone wrong.
Thanks

Worked like a charm, thanx a lot! I owe you bigtime
Damn opera is faster now!
a few things im missing from the built in one tho,
1 it doesnt move to landscape when i flip my hd, any easy way to get this to work?
2 it doesnt support the hd's back button
So whats so great about this? How do I make it my default browser as opposed to the Opera already on my Pro?
Gotta wait till I leave this basement to test it with a good signal

it'll overwrite ur current opera
much much faster compared to previous version, imo, atleast on my diamond
Thanks. How do I keep this thing from starting up on boot? Its really annoying and I don't see it in the Windows startup folder.
using it now and there is a number of announces going on. I don't know it's the skin but:
1) if the page (in full screen) is loading and I scroll/pan it will jump out of full screen mode. however, if the page finished loading and I scroll/pan it stays in full screen mode.
2)screen/skin response is a bit laggy at times. I really feels it is skin related because if I click a link in my RSS reader to open in opera it would show that the page is loading but doesn't show that a new tab is open until after (roughly) 10 seconds (where as in earlier builds it is shown immediately). I think this is somehow related to the jumping out of full screen problem.
EDIT
3) when double tap to zoom in, the wait it to focus is a bit longer than usual. restarted and this problem went away.
4) I really prefer the zoom slider at the bottom of the page a) because it's much smoother and responsive, b) because I'm left handed so it's better access.
good things:
1) I like that as you type the text area follows along, even though I have a good size screen I know smaller screen users would appreciate this.
2)it seems faster but some of the discrepancies I mentioned above sort of made this improvement moot.
3) it uses sip that is set at default (tested with TouchPal)
4) got a 59/100 in acid3 test (I think the test is somewhat flawed because it seems network dependent, I ran the test 3 times, I got 59, 57, 60. so I took the middle value of the 3. if I should use the average of these 3 it would be 58.6666∞, technically 59)
5) scroll velocity is back. but it doesn't "refresh" the page as you scroll/pan, so you'll be seeing a lot of gray area even if your height and width buffers are set up to 1028 (although this size helps a lot while reducing velocity to 150).
all in all, I will be using it.
** for those who can't enter text/comment on xda after hitting the "post reply" button while using opera, all you have to do is set user agent spoof to 3 in the config. for the last 5 builds I had to do this to be able to post comments here. not everyone has this problem.
** can anyone post the "image.css" file that should be found in the folder "opera9\styles\"
Guys, if anyone of you used Opera 2520, how does this compare to it? Just wanted some insights that's all!
All the best!
What does "Full Flash support" mean? Youtube (and some other sites) only like in previous versions, or is it really FULL flash support now?
I really doubt it's full flash. It won't do CNN, Yahoo, ESPN, etc. videos. It does some of them at least on my 2520 version.
Yeah the flash addon just makes it really slow. Gonna disable it.
I cannot tell if it's flash that's making it slow, i know those darn stupid scripts make it slow! disabling it is real fast but only do it to websites that don't use those stupid scripts!

disable "delay script execution" in config maybe that will help.

From Colour Stained glass to the monochromatic Bot

The Gripes of a WinMo switchover!
Just got my Dell Streak this Wednesday, unlocked from dell direct (at the temporarily reduced price!). From order to receipt was just 48hrs! Which was quite nice!
As you may infer from the title, this is my first Android device, previous to this (and still somewhat current) I used the HTC HD2 running WM6.5, (and probably would not have switched had the 5” streak been available on WinMo!).
These are my first impressions (in a 48hr period) on switching over (and I should add that my views on the device may be somewhat inter-twined with that of the O.S, and vice-versa!)
Somewhat underwhelmed, as someone else pointed out (don’t know why), but hopefully will get more excited as time passes.
Bigger Screen! If what you’re after is a screen bigger than the HD2 4.3” then this is for you, as it increase the visual real-estate of the HD2 whilst keeping the slip form-factor and with negligible weight increase! The HD2 looks positively tiny in comparison, the galaxy S? looks like 3”. Quality? Quite good, LCD wise, as I cannot speak for AMOLED. Problems? Control of brightness! adjustable on the home screen, but seemingly with an inaccessible life of its own within opened apps. (I know if you check the ones that have settings options they supposedly give the option to copy the system default, but i don’t believe they really do!).
Landscape Default, immediately corrected with ADW home Launcher! Haven’t been able to load any others, probably due to it being v1.6 Donut! I am missing the fully-fledged abilities of my SPB shell though!
Utilities; be prepared to look for your own for the majors (app killer/Task manager, File explorer). Widgets seem rather limited (or non-existant), possibly due to it being Donut 1.6. Touchdown?!
Apps: Whilst this may be an Android selling point, I personally (and currently) only see this as complacent ease-of-accessibility. There may be a lot, but the ones that really count aren’t there in numbers like on WM. I’ve only found limited singles for my major requirements, so be prepared for some slight frustrations
Ebooks: If you are a major ebook reader like me, be prepared to have to convert your whole library to just one format. On my HD2 my primary app was uBook; which read html, txt, rtf, pdb, prc, formatted everything on the fly into numbered pages and automatically remembered the last page/position you were on (even after complete exit and unit power-off!). My first two options on Android, aldiko and laputa, wouldn’t give me access to my library on the card. The third, iReader, could read txt & html files from my card, but had no numbered pages (only a top-to-bottom kinetic scroll option), so after laboriously scrolling down to where I was in the book, imagine my horror when I accidentally used the back tab, which took me back to the SD card library, on going back in, right at the Top again! Okay, my bad lets see what happens when I jump to device home; go back in, yes it’s still at the same place. But should it completely close or be app killed, or device shut off, guess what? Right Back At The Top Again!
Fourth time was the charm with FBreader, which could access my card to read my ePub converted library (Nobody please mention calibre! This system hog slowed down my PC, when batch converting only 100 text/doc file, for over an hour!), although it still has no numbered pages and is still a top-down kinetic scroller (I have to book-mark paragraphs). Fingers crossed for when its completely shut off.
Comics: only one real option so far; ACV! Comics look brilliant (re: sharp/vibrant/colourful)on the 5”screen, with well adapted settings options for landscape and portrait viewing controls.
Videos: Rockplayer for all your multi-format needs! Unfortunately it’s got that subtle playback issue (slight scratchy audio and video sync) that other people have reported for which you have no recourse to tweak the settings, as there are none! Unlike Winmo
Photos: No file/folder differentiating photo manager like Resco’s yet! (No separate icon option for camcorder recording either)
Youtube: accesses and plays fine, but seems to default to the lowest quality (will see if I can update or change the default)
Internet Browsing: the default browser is surprisingly quite pleasant (speedy and easy to use), although some sites default to mobile, and it has this annoying issue (probably Dell related) of not showing the additional product page options in the Android marketplace if you have the device in Portrait mode! (Weird, I know!). Readeable (in portrait!) on NO ZOOM!
Navigation: I am not missing my use of stand-alone nav systems, as, from the little I have used it, Google Nav seems quite brilliant!
Audio managers/Players: seems to be only one major rated one so far (audio manager pro) which I have yet to use, but I do miss my S2P/Coreplayer apps
Games: Now this seems to be where the 5” screen and Android /marketplace seem to have a kissing spot. I have only d/l’d Robo Defender so far, but it is brilliant (nope, not over-using the word!), and with similar games to utilise the screen ,and system, the future is golden.
Social Networking: don’t use, but i do think Android’s widgets, with spaciousness of the screen would go together.
So, overall (and thank you for bearing with me in my diatribe), in switching over to the Dell Streak on Android; for the 5” Screen, yes its worth it. (For the O.S. on its own without the screen, and on 1.6, not really for me). (Not a hardcore Winmo fan perse, but it is much more mature and fully fleshed than Android! Even now with all major players, including its creators, seemingly having bailed!)
If you want to read comics on a larger screen DEFINITELY!
Ebooks, yes (but with the above caveats).
Video? Need more players w/ settings to tweak!
Surfing, yes!
Games, Definitely!
So, the future is bright, the future is: the Dell Streak on Android!
Thanks for the perspective. I'll be switching from WinMo 6.1 and appreciate the viewpoint as this will be my first Android as well.
GPS looks to be the killer app for me. Everything else will just be a bonus for those times where a laptop won't do. Mostly email, games and music when I'm stuck at the airport. No separate PSP, MP3, PND.
Still, I wonder if I'll be able to have my GPS (AT&T) and Trapster running at the same time AND be able to make calls as I can on the WinMo? I didn't do this often (and once forgot to plug the charger in and drained a full battery in 30 minutes!) - but THAT is multi-tasking.
(I'm still waiting to get a rental car with a USB port to see if I can with stream my Media player to the car radio.)
There are many reasons to move off WinMo, but it does OK by me.
Winmo certainly does!
Thanks for your write up bbmalver and welcome to the Streak Family
Nice to be here; thanks for the welcome!
Aldiko will see ebooks in epub format on your card if you add them to the import folder. Personally I find it an excellent eBook reader, surpassing both ubook and Haalireader which I've used on WinMo previously...
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I did try to use the import option, but after 2secs it would say no books found. Are you suggesting all the books need to be copied to its own import folder before it sees them?
Tried it; didn't work! But on going thru the many created folders on my sd card I found that although i had created my own ebook folder on the card, Aldiko had created an import folder within my own ebook library folder, to which i then had to copy the book before it could import it. Convoluted eh?!
Thanks for the general pointage! Some neat touch features, can jump to page, and, best of all, it also remembers my page! ta!
Welcome to the android family
also, you can build your own YouTube app from source (i think) so you can change the default quality from there.
No one seems to have done it yet for the streak but it's apparently very easy to do
Now thats rather cryptic MeltusTell us how, or point us there!

Text editing - Craigslist posting nightmare

I am just having the hardest time making my craigslist ads which require me to cut and past the URLs of my photobucket images. I also need to edit in HTML into the posts and this is proving to be a nightmare on the transformer. In tablet form or docked.
It seems that I can't just click to place the cursor exactly where I want it and the cursor seems to always be moving to places I don't want it. Also trying to cut and paste works great sometimes and others it just seems unusable.
Should I maybe use a text editing app and then just cut and paste it over? Can anyone relate to the things I'm talking about? I'm new to Honeycomb so maybe there are a lot of little tricks I don't know yet.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
getting a stylus may help with the fine aiming of moving the cursor. and if it moves around you may be hitting the trackpad so try turning that off.
but for what your doing, it may be best to make it all in a text editor and then copy/paste it in the browser.

well the included polaris will work pretty good, color note and basically any other note pad app will as well.
there are a couple apps that can make and create .txt documents and those should work as well.
Ill look around, thanks.

Just an update.
I am currently using Opera forced in desktop mode only. This is the fastest scolling and zooming browser there is. The only thing I hate is how opera functions when selecting text off of a page to copy. It is really cheap. I also like the fact that I can add any search engine to the browser. I couldnt stand how every time I did a Google search it would search through Google mobile, so I just added the main Google search and all was fixed.
Typing on forums has been a breeze for the most part with opera, now if I can just find a way to use the Native copy and paste on web pages it will be almost perfect. At least when editing text or web page URLs it uses the native highlight feature.
In response to the cursor moving, I have that problem and am pretty sure it has to do with the mousepad being set up for "touch to click". On a fullsize laptop, no big deal, but on the smaller keyboard I keep hitting it. As a result, that disable-mouse button gets a ton of use from me.
It was doing it to me while editing on the screen as well. It doesn't seem to be doing it with opera though so Im happy about that.
One weird thing I have noticed as too is that if I really get going and start typing fast, the keyboard will register double I inputs twice. So for example if I type the word that, it will sometimes show as ththat. This only happens when im typing at full pace though and only sometimes. I went to Verizon today to play with a zoom and couldn't get the zoom to recreate this issue, it was only running 3.0 also.
If you are talking about the same thing I'm thinking about, I think this is just a general Android bug. My 2.3.4 phone does it and the stock browser on my TF does it. I have a guess it has to do with text wrapping... but no idea if that's really it.
An easy way to see why I think it seems to be a text wrap issue is by zooming in a little and typing a few lines of text, then try to edit it. Then pull up the green caret move handle thing and notice that it moves where you didn't place it.
Another way is to get a keyboard with arrow keys (thumb keyboard) and select one line and press the down key... it sometimes jumps a line or two. Almost certain its because of the text reflow. I wish you could turn it off or Google would fix it. I HATE working on a long forum post or Outlook Web App on my phone because textarea editing is just a horrible experience.
Finally, I, too use Opera... I'm not a fan, but its the only browser fast enough and that doesn't try to reflow ANY text area. No other browser, that I know, uses text areas that do not reflow.
I completely agree about Opera.

[Q] browser settings for archives.newyorker.com??

Hi,
Has anyone found a browser that allows you to read the on line archives of the New Yorker magazine? The built in browser only shows part of each page and does not let you move the screen around to see the rest of the page. Have tried all the UA strings but no joy.
I did find that I could read using the Dolphin browser as long as I use the URL of archives.newyorker.com/ipad and set the UA string to ipad though the display is still less than ideal. Sometimes portrait mode single page display shows the full page but reduced in size to about 75% of normal so it does not fill the screen and the type is quite small. Other times it does actually fill the screen but has a flashing white bar at the bottom.
Perhaps someone who is more familiar with Dolphin can suggest what adjustments to the settings in Dolphin will optimize the view. I'm perfectly happy using the built in browser for everything but the New Yorker and Dolphin for only the New Yorker if I could just get it to display clearly on a consistent basis. In Dolphin's page content settings, I have text size set to Large and Default Zoom set to Medium. I switched the ipad applet settings so that portrait mode shows a single page - just wish I could get rid of the flashing white line at the bottom.
On the other hand, clearly the people at the magazine don't care about Android users since the display in most Android browsers has been garbled since the first time I checked, a year or more ago but they were quick to jump on the iApple tablet bandwagon with a page optimized just for the iApple. Even the archives on DVD don't display properly when saved as a PDF since they're actually djvu files so I can say New Yorker hasn't exactly been technology-savvy or else they just want to keep selling dead-tree magazines even though they finally have a chance to ditch the paper, ink, and distribution/postage costs with a digital model if they could just embrace modern browsers and tablets.
