[q] galaxy s5 shuts off every minute, please help - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my Galaxy S5 for just under a month now, and it was working absolutely fine until today. It wasn't exposed to extreme heat or cold, it didn't get wet, the closest that could come being a problem is that the bottom, with the protective cover closed tight, was covered in chalk dust due to some art a friend and I were doing. I noticed around that time that my pin lock was glitching (see below). It continued to do so, and only got worse as the day wore on, until I got home and thought to restart it. After that, the pin wasn't glitching anymore, but my phone began freezing completely, the screen going black and the entire phone shutting off. Usually it didn't restart but occasionally it did. At first it only happened like twice in one hour, but in the last three hours it has progressed to happening literally once a minute. If I turn my phone on, it will immediately shut off if I am not perpetually touching the screen or any button, and even then, there's no guarantee it will stay on. I've tried starting it in safe mode multiple times and, if anything, that only seems to make it worse. My phone will not stay on for more than sixty seconds. The worst thing is that it doesn't even shut off immediately after the screen turns off, as evidenced by the fact that my computer still registers it as an active device for a while after it goes black, and doesn't register that it's off until I unplug it. What is going on, and how do I make it stop?

Are you rooted? Try a factory reset? You could Odin a stock firmware tar or even a full stock tar if necessary and see if that fixes it.

Apparently, it only lasted a day??? I mean, it's been working fine since this morning, so I'll let it be for now. If it happens again, I'll return it and get a new phone. It's not rooted or anything, this was just a weird, completely arbitrary (and apparently temporary) hardware failure.

Slightest knock turns phone off

I have an O2 XDA Mini S which has been working pretty well up until recently when I kept noticing that whenever I got my phone out of my pocket, it had turned off even though it was in a locked state - thus meaning I hadn't inadvertently pressed the power switch.
At first I assumed it was a problem with the battery but I have just noticed that as I dropped my phone onto the desk it turned off. I have just repeated this half a dozen times and every time I drop it onto my desk from around 6" the phone turns off. If I knock the side of the phone with my knuckle it will also turn off.
The battery is fully charged and the contacts all look good and clean. What is the most likely suspect part for me to start twiddling with to try and overcome this problem?

Turbo 2 screen problems.

Tonight, my turbo 2 started acting up. I pulled it out to make a call, and the top 1/2 inch of my screen was flickering purple. That went away after about an hour, but then the whole screen went black and unresponsive. After trying to shut it off and reboot for a bit, it just randomly started working again. Full battery. Everything works, except the top 1/2 inch of display is completely black, every now and then, it will be green. If the phone sleeps, even for a second, it won't come back on, for about an hour, then it will randomly start working again. Never got wet, or dropped. Any body had an issue like this?
There's a known issue with a green line on the screen, I believe the speculation is a bad batch of screens got out, you're gonna have to exchange it for a new phone.
I am currently having this same issue. Going to VZ today to see about resolving it, as really hard to do anything when its doing that. Top 1/2 or more of the screen is flickering purple, then the screen will not let you turn up the brightness, all programing in the back works, just a LED issue. Restarted and same thing, let it charge Off all night, and back to normal after a few minutes using it. Very odd, not sure what is going on.
I have a similar issue, and I am trying to recover some data from mine. It seems booting into bootloader mode and using ADB yields nothing
I also cannot use MTP, as when I plug my phone in it's not in MTP mode for some reason, and i Can't see how to turn it on (screen is black). Digitizer still works. Does anyone have any suggestions? Can someone here maybe take a video of themselves plugging the phone in via USB and then selecting MTP on the phone? perhaps I can do it blindly...
Really don't want to give this phone back to vz until I get my data off of it.
About eight hours of pissing and moaning and I finally figured out:
Using the replacement phone, I just mimicked every movement on the one with the dead screen. I hit the "cast" button on the notifications panel and casted the screen to my chromecast, which in turn allowed me to set up MTP mode and/or anything else I wanted.
Cheers, hope this helps someone

Screen stopped working, burning out?

SO Sunday morning I wake up and my phone has been on charge all night, its 100%, I unplug the phone and about 10 minutes later its very hot and at around 60% battery. So to stop this I go to turn it off and start seeing these red "bubbles" under the screen like water but its the LEDs turning red. I have never dropped the phone or put it under water. Its a hot day as it is and about 5 hours later I turn the phone back on and its fine for around 15 minutes watching youtube videos, it then starts flashing black, like the whole screen shuts off for half a second and comes back, still sound playing, about 5 minutes later the phone starts glitching out and the pixels on the right hand side start turning red (no link) like so. Then the phone starts jumping between that and this ( no link ) which happened for around a minute and since then the phone screen is just black and doesnt display anything but the phone is still active and had feedback on the screen such as touch vibrations. Really want to know whats happened and why if anyone can help
Probably a hardware defect that will be covered under warranty. But possibly a software problem that's causing the cpu and gpu to run really hot. You can try booting into safe mode to see if that makes a difference:
Shut the phone off and let it cool down.
Boot into safe mode: https://www.google.com/search?q=gal...rome..69i57.3932j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Use the phone for a while, and see if the problem reoccurs. (Your 3rd party apps will be disabled, so you won't be able to use them, but you can do other things.)
If this seems to solve the problem, delete any recently installed apps, or factory reset the phone, and see if the problem stays resolved. If so, add your apps back in a few at a time, so if the problem reoccurs you'll have an idea what caused it.
If none of this solves the issue, it's a hardware problem.
My wife had EXACT same problem. Backup everything while you can as my wife's phone died few hours later. (no display at ALL - digitizer was working fine though - so could shut down, etc). Symptom also was that when you reboot, it will display the boot up screen just fine, but as soon as all white screen was able to display, display will just die, etc. Pressing power button repeatedly would eventually turn on the screen but color would be off and simmering, etc.

Samsung S4 VE I9515 wont turn on

Hello,
So let me give you a brief so you'd know everything - a few days ago, I'm gonna call it day 1, I walked under light rain with the phone in my pocket, it worked until the night of
Day 2 - started to lag a bit, it was like I was running some heavy apps and like the ram was insufficient. Restarted the phone, everything seemed normal.
Day 3 - Phone went off while was browsing. So I have to make a note here. I was running cm13 with android m and twrp 2..something and there were occasional reboots by itself rarely prior to Day 1. Also, I was using a supercharger (or whatever it is called, it is a charger that charges faster) for about a month.
So when the phone went off while I was browsing, it started by itself and stuck on the android loading. I restarted, cleared dalvik and regular cache - still stuck on boot. Flashed many times, changed the recovery to twrp, and still was stuck on rebooting and occasionally it didn't turn on. There were random occurrences of errors on flashing roms, which never happened before (for example, "cant mount system or data"). Within the time passing by, the phone started not to turn on when I tried to. By this time rarely got stuck on the first boot screen saying with the text "Samsung S4". Yesterday, Day 4, the phone never turned on, except one time. I don't remember doing anything special. I just pressed and held the power button and it turned on, but went off shortly after the android boot animation appeared.
Also there was times on Day 3, when I was trying to boot into the system, it got stuck on the android booting animation.
On and prior to Day 3, while I was charging, whenever it is on or off - I had the indicator light for charging. Now when I plug it in to charge - nothing happens.
To skip any unnecessary questions, I will make a short QA.
Q: Did you tried to boot into recovery/bootloader?
A: yes, nothing happens
Q: Any sign of life on adb while connected to a pc??
A: no
Q: Is battery dead?
A: I don't think so, but actually I'm not that sure. When I connect a separate led light to it, the led lights up Whatever, if it was a faulty battery when I plug the phone on the charger, it should've worked fine.
Q: Why don't you just buy a new phone?
A: I was planning to buy a new one, but after just 4 months when I have to renew my contract. I don't want to buy a phone off contract.
Q: Are you stupid, if you can't manage to fix it by yourself, why don't you give it to a repair?
A: I truly believe that the professionalism of repairers doesn't exist in my country via old experiences with them.
So in the worst scenario I will loose time by trying to fixing it and for 4 months I will use my old android phone.
In the best scenario, my almost 2 years old phone will revive.
Also, I have a multimeter - I can check the electricity. Just tell me what to check.
Thanks.

Probabily the rain damaged a part of your hardware. Did you solve?
If the battery is dead, the phone won't work.
The battery needs to have at least a bit of charge in order for the device to work, even if it is plugged in.
If the battery can't hold the charge, and the device uses more power than it gets, it turns off. I speak from experience.
These devices don't seem to work without a battery. Power goes to the battery, and the phone takes the power from there. Power doesn't go straight to the phone.
Anyway, I don't think a bit of light rain hurts the devices, especially if it was in your pocket. I walked through rain with my device in the pocket many times and no problem.
It looks to me that the hardware is failing. I don't believe that a faulty battery can cause a bootloop. I also don't believe that the power button causes a bootloop.
What I suggest would be:
1) Try going back to stock ROM.
2) Maybe try to get an S4 with a broken screen and switch the motherboards.

Screen works when charging & with full battery, stops working soon after

Awhile back I dropped my phone & cracked the screen. It worked fine for months then the screen began flickering and within a few weeks began turning off frequently (even though the phone was on and functioning). It became unusable and I had the screen professionally replaced. It worked fine for several months, now is malfunctioning again. If I charge the phone, the screen works fine while the phone is fully charged and plugged into the charger. It will continue to work for a while if I unplug the charger, but once my battery level gets down toward 90% the screen starts flickering, then soon begins going black when I try to use it. It may turn on for a second or two, but the screen goes black almost immediately. The 'always on' clock and date work all the time. Like before, the phone still works even though the screen won't stay on. Does anyone have any suggestions? I haven't dropped the phone or damaged the new screen to account for it, and I wonder if there is some other problem that might be the cause.
