If the issue suddenly occurred, I think it's one of two issues:
1) AT&T is currently modernizing (upgrading) the cell towers in your area. This should be the case if the issue continues after restarting your device or if it occurs in a specific area.
2) The cell towers are loaded with AT&T users. Yes, all carriers in the US prioritize their branded devices first therefore you will be knocked off the LTE network completely if the cell tower RSSL computer has too many users connected to the same antenna because you are using a non carrier branded device. This should be the case if the issue is intermittent.

My first Note 4 was a C version and I never had LTE, it had what I believe to be modem issues, the replacement I got is an H version. I have heard of carriers giving priority to their branded phones like the earlier poster stating.

Completely possible, but my case was more user error.

It happened, well I noticed it, about 5 hours prior to posting on here. I was rooted on stock 5.0.1, but had been flashing "sweet rom". I ended up having to flash stock via Odin, and start over. There may have been an easier way, but I wanted to make sure that I hadn't permanently lost LTE.
Either way, problem solved. Thread can be closed.

I've mentioned here I have some signal problems with my Samsung Epic on Verizon. I think most of these are the result of using a Sprint radio on Verizon. What I'm curious about is, has anyone tried/tested using a modem flash out of the Samsung Stratosphere, which is the Epic variant for Verizon, on the Epic? Obviously the Epic doesn't have LTE, which might be a problem, but the proper CDMA and EVDO handling would be nice.
No. And the variant is the Fascinate. We use different band speeds. The stratosphere is the gs2 I believe.

Actually despite coming out as late as it did, the Stratosphere is indeed a GS1 phone.
But yeah, modem for that phone is useless to us nonetheless.

In that case, does anyone have a recommendation on a modem that will work better with Verizon, or a way to make one of the existing modems do so?

If I understand you correctly, you have an Epic that you're using with a Verizon subscription? Not just roaming? Either way, you'll probably want to look into changing to a Verizon PRL (Preferred Roaming List.) I'm not certain how the PRL on an Epic works if you're on Verizon service, but I know there are Verizon-friendly and -specific PRLs available. See the thread concerning switching PRLs in Development.
As for your modem: some people have better connections with newer modems, some are better with older modems. The only way to know is to flash different ones and experiment.

Technically, it's a Verizon MVNO, but yes. I've updated the PRL, and to the latest stock modem which helped the problem considerably, but I still have problems with the signal strength "wobbling" a lot--such as going from 4 bars to 0 to 4--and resulting issues like dropped calls.

I have Pageplus service (which is a Verizon MVNO) and I noticed the signal bars dropping to zero a few times when I'm at work indoor, but I never had dropped calls with this service AFAIK.
The only problem I have right now is with the 3G data which doesn't work at all. especially after I started using CM7 roms

Have you checked the username credentials? This flummoxed me for awhile when I first ported my number in to my current provider: I couldn't get online even though the data was provisioned. But phones flashed from another carrier generally won't automatically update their data connection username and password. Mine didn't, so I had to go in manually with QPST to change it to the right values. It should match your phone number; if not, that's probably your issue.
After activating my 6p on AT&T I noticed slow LTE speeds compared to my Nexus 5 (not just speed tests, actual browsing/usage). Contacted AT&T support to verify IMEI and SIM information and they did some sort of SIM refresh on their end. After that I was getting around 70-80mbps speed tests for a few days but now the speeds have dropped back down to 5-10mbs (if that).
I've tried switching to PHONE and PTA APN's and no difference is observed. I am not on an unlimited plan so no throttling should be taking place.
My friend who is also using a 6p on AT&T is seeing the exact same behavior and had the exact same results after contacting support (fast speeds after refresh but slows down after a few days).
Has anyone else been experiencing this issue with AT&T or any other carriers? I'm not sure if this is a radio firmware problem worth reporting to Google or something on AT&T's side.
I'm having this same problem, my s4 was at least double the LTE speed of my 6P, I've been searching for a fix but this thread is the only one I've found so far, I did see VZW post where you can dial a certain number and select bands, I'm hoping someone can share a fix life that for us on AT&T
same here ... very slow compared to all the other phones I have that are AT&T branded and much slower compared to Nexus 5 and OPO. Also every time I call somebody, phone drops down to "H" and then connects the call. No calls over LTE.
I'm having the same issue and lately I keep loosing my lte and seeing only the H for 4g

I wonder if it's something with AT&T network and this phone. I'll have full bars (LTE) and no service quiet often. I live in south florida, so we generally have great reception for every carrier.
The issue started for me as soon as I upgraded. I tried the older radio as well. I went back to Chroma 6.0 and all is well. I did star the issue in the tracker.
Well I just got off with att and they reset my connection to the network and so far so good. Lte all around. I will watch the next few days and let you all know

I have actually gotten the same problem, after updating my 6p to 6.0.1, I have lost my LTE and just stayed at H.
I haven't done nothing other than updating, I really hope this gets fixed soon, the speeds arent that bad but I am used to having LTE all around
Well I called att this am at around 8am and tight now at 6pm its been solid. They made me shut off my phone and basically set up my phone network wise as a new phone and boom LTE everywhere
Happening again. I reset network settings and boom all is well for two days
I found a recent post on reddit where a user was having issues with the phone connecting/losing LTE. After troubleshooting with AT&T support they indicated the "APN type" setting was missing an entry and in the improper order.
Changing to the proper order fixed his and others LTE issues and so far it appears that it has fixed my speed issues as well.
The fix applies to both nextgenphone and phone APN's.
Default APN Type on 6p = default,mms,supl,fota,hipri
Correct APN Type from AT&T support = default, admin, fota, mms, supl, hipri
Hopefully this helps.
I have called at&t 4 times today and Google once. My phone is only displaying H not 4g. Will not connect to 4g no matter what I try. Messed with APN settings. Wondering if I have a defective phone. Wifo connection is not as strong as my other devices even right by the router. Any help or suggestions. At&T and Google had no help whatsoever.

Probably a hardware issue but I would do a full reset and try again, if that fails contact their support for RMA
That's what I was afraid of. Did the full factory reset and still same issue! I'm hold with Google right now with google. I know they don't do exchanges which is ridiculous! Been on hold for 15 mins. Will prob never buy another device from google after this mess. They are saying a replacement might not fix the issue because H might stand for 4g. I have told them this is not the case as the speeds are noticeably slower.

Do you mean "4g" or LTE because 4g will display as H on this phone?
When I went to AT&T they had to tweak my settings so my apn is set to ATT phone not ATT WAP and I get lte now. You might have to go into a store and have them tweak it for you. At first it shows H but it switches over to lte. I hope this helps you some.

Huh I was told by Google that H stood for 3g (HSPA). I do not get LTE at my house but full bars of 4g service. Also the speed feels like 3g about as fast as my rather sluggish wifi. Where 4g on my last phone was very fast. Talked to Google's advanced tech support and sent her a bug report of my device. She is supposed to get back to me.

Yes it's been extremely frustrating. Spent all of my day off and last night on the phone troubleshooting. Just curious what does your phone display when you have 3g/4g/4gLTE ? Will prob go back to at&t and try a diffrent nano sim just to rule out that possibility.

You really need to look at your APN and make sure it's ATT phone like Nexus4to6p said. Post a shot of your APN settings here.
For me, 3g=H and 4gLTE=LTE. Haven't been in a 4g/HSPA+ area yet. My APN is ATT Nextgenphone.

My 6p specifically says 3g, H and lte I was recently on the Moto x pure that had the same settings. Haven't seen the h+ logo in a long time.
it's probably just a provisioning issue if it's not APN related like others have stated.

H displayed for hspa+
I am sure you must have figured it out by now but just throwing it out there in case it helps.
If you simply took out your SIM card from old phone and put it in N6P (not that there is anything is wrong with that) take your phone and SIM card to AT&T ask them to add your phone (IMEI) and activate LTE on this IMEI. Unless something is wrong with your phone hardware wise, this should do it. Try it, you might get lucky and don't have to send your phone back.
I have the same issue and I've tried A few different APN's. Still on H no matter what APN I use. However, what could be wrong is that when I got my 6P I took my SIM card out of my Note 3, had an AT&T store cut it to Nano size so it would fit the 6P ( They were out of SIM cards that day) and went on my way. I later noticed that I only get H anywhere I go. Called AT&T and they said that the IMEI was updated on my account but the SIM card might be damaged from the store cutting it and to go get a new Nano SIM card. (Free at official AT&T stores) So I'm off to try that and I'll report back and see if that solves the issue. I'm rooted on PureNexus ROM and ElementalX Kernel as well.
Sounds like you are used to the way carrier phones display hspa as 4g and LTE as 4g LTE. This all started when the iPhone came out and on att and 3g was listed as 4g. And LTE as LTE. There is nothing wrong with your phone. Its being reported right by android. You are getting yourself worked up over just the way it's displayed. Let me ask you this, what phone are you coming from?

Well that would be cool if that's all it is! I'm coming from the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
I promise you that is all this is. I came from an ATT branded note 3 as well. Think about it, your old note never said 3g, because your 3g would show as 4G and when you had LTE it would say 4gLTE. You guys are getting the same exact connection as you used to. Its just the way its displayed to you.

Oh Ok. So if 4g is shown as H then what does 4G LTE show as? H+? Is there a way to change it with PureNexus Rom, ElementalX Kernel , or Exposed Modules to what I'm use to seeing? Old habits die hard.
Is anyone having this issue? I recently got a lg v20 sprint unlocked and the cellular signal drops constantly, it says "NO SERVICE every 3 seconds" then connects back to my mobile carrier.
anyone knows how to fix this? I know for sure it can't be a hardware problem because the phone is relatively new.

That's a side effect of using a sprint phone on a different network. It all determines the carrier and area. Never buy a sprint phone with full intentions of it fully working on a different network. For me AT&T would do it. T-Mobile wouldn't.

okay thanks for the response. hmmm not what should I do with the phone?
What is the SIM card that you have inserted in your phone? If it's gsm one, it will not work.
Sprint is a CDMA network and even if you unlock a device from them, you will have issues using it on other networks.

Dude, this is so incorrect I've been using a domestic Verizon note 5 for the past 6 months on the gsm network by only changing the apn for data. Pretty much every flagship carries all the bands to reduce manufacturing costs it's just a matter of accessing them through the software.

Sprint locks it down software wise. Verizon does Not. So Verizon variant most wouldn’t have an issue. Even though with older phones like the S5 and G4 (only ones I’ve tested Verizon wise) service was unreliable in fringe areas as they would all the time go in and out of service, but only in fringe areas.
It depends. A lot of sprint models miss bands that Several GSM carriers use weather it be WCDMA or LTE
But generally 99% of people trying to use a Sprint device on a GSM network are gonna have an issue. While Verizon it’s probably less than have that will have an issue if even that.

I value your opinion on other things but your information here is incorrect. I have successfully used a Sprint LG V20 unlocked by Sprint here locally on GSM networks as well as outside the US. It could be an issue with APN settings or selecting a proper network.
The Sprint V20 has enough band support for domestic GSM bands and I have first hand experience with it. It could be that the particular V20 could be faulty?

It’s not the band support that is the issue. And it’s not just the V20. In fringe/lower coverage areas it’s a pain to maintain a stable connection. I’ve seen this with both the G5 and V20. It makes it unusable. It also occurs on older Verizon devices as well like the S5 and G4 as an example.
It’s mostly a software issue that causes it. APN is data related and wouldn’t cause signal issues.
When I had a sprint G5 for my 2nd line, I go into city limits where coverage was good would almost work perfectly. Go home in a fringe area might as well pop the sim In a flip phone lol.

That is true with Sprint coverage anywhere lol. (my local Walmart sells Boost mobile phones, even though we have ZERO sprint coverage) But in a fringe area on AT&T as an example the signal will drop in an out constantly. While any other phone will hold onto the signal perfectly fine and never drop and work perfect one 1-2 bars of signal.
I guess by fringe I mean a lower signal area not exactly fringe to the point of no service.
And there’s plenty of posts of Sprint G5 unlocked users that have the same problem.

I used to believe in this statement.. But when I walk around with a phone from Verizon (business), Srint (Personal) and AT&T hotspot service, I realized this is very not true.
There are locations where each carrier is stronger than others. At one of my job site, Verizon and AT&T fail to connect at all constant roaming and drop calls while Sprint skips along like no body cares.
Point, additionally, as each carrier acquire and deploy new bands, they need to be built out so the newer devices that support the bands can utlize it relieving the crowded older bands.
HOWEVER, this stupid phone, with SignalCheck Pro installed, I can see the bands I'm on but the signal stregnth is horrible, like at the moment, i'm connected to band 41 but LTE is at -117dBm, that's almost like not having signal at all. Likewise when I'm connected to band 25 and 26.
I tried disabling all those bands and force it onto the lower frequency with hardly any success.

Can you disable or remove that signal check program? Not all sognal check programs are legit.
What country are you in?
That may be part of the problem.
I agree, carriers do have their own pros and cons.

Switch to verizon, att, or cricket. Sprint is bottom of barrel of carriers sadly. I learned that the hard way back when carriers has 2 year contracts.

I'm in the US
and yes the program can be uninstalled, but it was only installed because I need to troubleshoot this issue, so it's not the program that's causing the problem. It's just telling me what band I'm on and the signal.

Anyone else on Sprint with the S10?
Note 8, and S8+ works fine. My S10+ is getting 1x and when I'm on the road, it would come in and out all day long. Without WiFi the phone is almost useless.

It's not just you. There are multiple threads on Sprint's forums with users complaining. My phone constantly roams, the WiFi calling keeps timing out on location and though it says LTE most of the time data doesn't work. Lucky for me I keep a spare phone so I'll be switching back to my iPhone X until they resolve this but there's been no official word on any of this getting resolved so I'm not expecting a solution any time soon. I'm wondering if it was the update I installed that caused this because it seemed like day 1 the phone was ok. Maybe a solution is to use Odin and flash back to the original stock.

They had me reset network settings which I did and it didn't help. They're sending me a replacement phone... Once I get it I'll prevent the Samsung update and see if that helps. Idk I really wanted to like this phone.

Sadly this is a known issue:

I have the sprint version purchased from S
Spent an hour with samsung to no resolution. Took my verizon sim and dropped it on the S10 and the phone was getting good signal and speed then dropped for a couple minutes then back to good speeds. But as it's doing this, the phone started to get very warm. Sprint tech support doesn't know crap, just make me repeat their written process multiple times and the guys at the sprint stores are just salesman.
Since the verizon seems shows intermitten connections as well, i'm going to see if samsung can send me a replacement.
