Hi,
I am considering buying a Atrix (without 4G in Germany). Could you (owner of Atrix) please help me a bit.
I want a Atrix because of
* Medium size (4" display)
* hw-specs: dual core, gb ram, hdmi & usb port
* long battery life
* extensions / the docks
Do you think these points are correct?
Other phones to consider:
Nexus S
htc one v
Some questions you may want to answer me:
Are there custom ROMs which support the weptop / lapdock?
Is it easy to flash custom ROMs?
Would you say the Atrix is hacker friendly?
Interested as well, mostly for the battery.
Is there a ICS update/port?

There's a custom ROM based on stock MotoBlur that supports webtop (Nottachtrix) and IIRC, there's a hack to get it working on non-blur ROMS (which might or might not work).
Flashing custom ROMs is easy as pie once you got CWM up and running.
Hacker friendly? With the bootloader unlocked, I guess anything goes...

There are a couple of CM9-based ICS ROMs and some AOKP-based ROMs as well, but they're not 100% working yet. While hacks got most things running well, we still need ICS drivers to get everything working 100%.
The good news is that Motorola have confirmed an official update to ICS in the future. Although it's currently only confirmed for AT&T phones, but I'm betting the devs can (and will) use it to cook some tasty flavours of ICS.
Hi,
I have an Atrix for 8 months now, here's what I think :
Pros
The best compromise, according to me, between screen size and phone size
Hardware powerful enough for a perfectly smooth usage (not with stock ROMs of course), gaming and more
Battery life if you compare with other Android phones (okay with stock ROMs, splendid with CM7)
Fingerprint unlocking (okay-ish with stock ROMs, splendid with CM7)
Excellent phone (reception GSM/EDGE/3G/HSPA, call quality, etc.)
Solid build-quality
Just okay
Camera
Screen (pixel density, readability under the sun)
Cons
Stock ROMs (ugly Froyo, pathetic and unoptimised Gingerbread, no ICS)
Locked bootloader
Battery life if you compare with iPhones
Correcting the cons
Tutorials for rooting, unlocking the bootloader, installing CMW and then installing ROMs and kernels
Amazing community of developers providing CM7 or even CM9, revealing the Atrix's true potential
Now my Atrix is running CM9 beta, and it's just great : perfectly smooth, good battery life, ICS-tasted
I definitely recommend the Atrix

Those points are correct. The Atrix still holds up pretty well considering it's over a year old. Most people are happy with the battery life, with some easily getting over a day. I however, haven't had that much luck with the battery (I bought it used, so the battery might just be bad) but I can still get 10+ with moderate-heavy use.
Most Blur-based ROMs support webtop/lapdock if I'm not mistaken. Best Blur-based ROM I think would be NottachTrix.
As long as you follow instructions correctly, you should have no problems flashing ROMs. And if you do run into some troubles, there are many people here that could help.
Hacker-friendly is a matter of opinion. I haven't had much trouble with flashing and stuff. There are a lot of customization options available. Just unlock the bootloader, root, and start flashing.
There is an ICS update planned for Q3 I believe. But there are quite a few ICS ROM's out already in the Dev Section, so you can have a look at those.
thanks for your opinions
Hi,
thank you all very much for your opinions. I'm looking forward to my next device.
Yup, those points are correct. Even with the other phones you're considering, atrix is still superior (except for the stock ROM)
There are custom ROMs that include webtop, such as Nottachtrix

The battery life on these devices is far superior to the iphone as long as you don't install data hogging applications. I can go two or three days with moderate use switching between 3G and Wifi.
On a note of the 4G version, actually you'll be better off with the NON-4G as you put it version.
I own both an Atrix 4G and Atrix... I just want clarify a few things for you based on two stock devices.
The Atrix 4G is a very crippled, and restricted version of the Atrix. In fact, the Atrix is more 4G than the Atrix 4G if you want to play to ATT's marketing crud.
Why? The bands it supports. The Atrix will support 3G(UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA/HSPA/HSPA+ are all forms of 3G and HSPA+ is not 100% 4G as AT&T call it, though apparently according to some specification in the USA it is). In the UK, THREE have HSPA+ that runs at 42mbps, but they don't call it 4G!) on 850/900/1900/2100 where as the Atrix 4G only supports these on 850/1900/2100
I'll be doing a comparison video at some point to explain this in more detail. Check this link here for some rough differences: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3...&idPhone2=3708

What's the point of having a high-end Android smartphone if I have to choose between syncing (Gmail, GReader, GCalendar, GNotes, GContacts, G+, FB, LinkedIn, Twitter) and battery life ?
I just wanted to warn twaldecker that if he comes from iWorld and wants to enjoy a full Android experience, he can't expect the same battery life...
Frequency band and battery life
Hi, thanks for your replies.
In Germany we only have the "Atrix" and it has WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, HSDPA 14.4 Mbps (Kategorie 10), HSUPA 2.0 Mbps.
Which is really all you need for the next few years.
4G (which is only LTE & LTE Advanced as I understand) will get coverage in rural areas first (thanks to government ;-))
Battery life: I understand that the more I use the phone the more battery it consumes. I expect to plug it in every two days. If it doesnt last with 3G always on and wifi always standby (on but not connected). Then I have the option to use Llama and only activate wifi at home and at university. I hope it will work then.

I use all of these applications too plus skype as well. I also have two additional email mail boxes that check every 15 minutes. Plus I use it for internet radio/music in the car
And I still get up to 2 days (overnight battery saver mode helps!)
is a great phone

don't just consider atrix and don't just go for the specs.. while atrix is a pretty good phone, gaming in single core galaxy S is more smoother (I have tested plenty of games on both the devices)..also the screen quality is not that good and camera is average at best.. the device is chunky in comparison to other phones.. many people including me have touch screen problem wherein even with the touch of slightly moist hand the screen starts to flicker itself and becomes unusable..
The good points are battery life, 1gb RAM means no homescreen redraw, no lag even when running plenty of apps on background,
Das Atrix ist schon richtig geil! Besser als HTC oder Iphone.
The Atrix is a great Phone. Better as HTC or Iphone
I'm loving my Atrix. I got it used from Craigslist and currently have it running on Neutrino ROM. Its blazing fast, and it'll only get better when ICS comes officially later this year.

decided to go with the atrix
Hi, thank you for your opinions.
I ordered the Atrix on Friday with my new contract.
The specs are good. I like the Tegra 2 (working in my Xoom).
And I like your opinions also if they are quite a bit biased (in a Atrix forum).
I have never liked my Atrix since I got it and this will be my last Motorola device for me. My friend has a SGS2 and his CPU runs extremely cool and it doesn't overheat the phone at all even when you are watching HD videos or playing intensive games for hours. On the other hand, Tegra 2 runs really hot even if you are not doing anything at all. Before I replaced my first Atrix, I remember when it used to overheat whenever I used to get a text message, let alone browsing the internet or playing games. Now that's one of the many issues that I have with the Atrix and another one that bothers me a lot is the DIGITIZER. I mean come on Motorola, how much would it have cost you to spend a little more on the digitizer? I have never seen a phone with the digitizer that breaks so easily.
It's a great phone. But it's one year old.

Beware the enormous lag, the ROM is extremely slow, the phone wont be upgraded to Android 5, it will remain on 4.4.4 KK.
Miui 7 is really a 4.4.4 for this device. (only a few Xiaomi phones will get Lollipop)
I have a Redmi 2 for 5 months, Xiaomi iare not planning to develop Lollipop for this smartphone.

The phone is great in it's price range!
Hi! I've been using the Redmi2 4G version for a couple of months now, and I think I'm ready to give an opinion on it, to the best of my abilities.
For this price range, it's actually very tough to beat the Redmi 2, with specs. The looks are premium, you won't feel like using a cheap Chinese-build phone, it's actually well made. I have an issue with the back panel finish, it's rather slippery despite being matte. I'm pretty sure you would have researched on it's specs, so you would know, that it is THE DEAL for it's price category.
The back camera is pretty good, macro mode is specifically good, but night photography isn't that great. Front camera's performance is rather satisfactory.
Battery is pretty good, lasts a day for me, with moderate usage.
There are NO heating issues with my phone. Off course, if you will play Asphalt for a couple of hours straight, it is bound to heat up.
Display is pretty intriguing for a budget phone.
If you've used MIUI in the past, you would know of it's resemblance with the iOS. While MIUI is pleasing to the eyes, and pretty simple to use and learn, I would add, that it's best for the 2GB RAM phones. MIUI with a 1GB RAM phone sucks BIG time, so, yeah, Redmi2 has issues here, lagging, crashing apps at times.
Now, since I prefer the stock-android feel better, I have flashed mine with a pretty stable CM11 ROM.
If you're a heavy gamer, I recommend you to browse phones in higher price ranges. Redmi2 is a good everyday usage phone, but certainly NOT the one for heavy gamers.
Long cut short:- Go for it, it is pretty awesome. P.S. - I don't know if Redmi 2's Prime version(2GB RAM) is available in your country, if it is, rather go for that.
Cheers.

Really i got it attention and look for Redmi 2 cause the specs and good price tag. I use today a Quadcore cortex armv7 snapdragon 200 , but without version updates upper JB 1 (4.1.2) we waiting so far , but the factory strategically isn't willing to put lot of money for invest licences .
This situation made me take a decision to start development at point to create my own roms
I like very much about MIUI, used on my own others devices ( Defy Mb526 Atrix 4G) . One of my works development was inspired by MIUI V6 , creating my design and ported some MI apps for package
I really have interest to get one Redmi. Here just Redmi 2 it's avaliable in local market but others devices will be launched soon like MI 4

Don't expect Lollipop update for Redmi2. The Mi team isn't quite interested in giving Lollipop updates. So, that's quite a letdown.

I'm one of the first buyers here in Brazil. On the launching event, the MIUI Brazilian website got bugged and fewer people was able to buy (I'm one of them, hacking the page).
I got a few complains:
the HDR Camera is laggy as hell when I take pictures.
There's no app drawer.
Sometimes I'm unable to unlock the phone, because of lag (I think). Seriously, this is annoying.
When phone gets too slow, when I go to the home screen the interface reloads itself.
Playing games like Fallout Shelter is a big problem, lagging as hell.
1GB RAM isn't enough for the phone (for me, at least) .
Sometimes the phone heats so much.
The phone has a x64 architecture, but the MIUI is 32 bits. Sounds like a waste of processing power.
There's no support forum for Brazilian users in the official boards.
No Lollipop support and no plans to receive update.
Things I liked:
Built-in security, like Antivirus and cleaning app.
The interface is so beautiful.
LTE (4G here in Brazil) for BOTH sim cards.
I can Easily switch wich sim card to make a call, send SMS or use Mobile data.
The frontal camera has a special facial recognition, telling the age, for example.
The phone charges super fast (2200 mAh battery).
It's cheap, compared to other phones. It costs less than $ 150 (at the time I bought it).
I don't think that I'm a hard user for this phone (seriously, I didn't even play so much on the phone). I know it's a mid-term smart phone. But the MIUI lag is annoying (I got crazy sometimes). I tried to use the beta versions of the MIUI rom, tried to use performance scripts, Greenify, other camera apps.
Now I'm using a customized CM 12.1 for the device, to see if I'm able to use easily the phone, like driving in my car, got lost and easily open Waze or Google Maps to see where I need to go. Actually, I need to stop and park the car, clean current apps (some times reboot) to properly use.
nice reply @juliovedovatto
i have for several days a 2GB RAM / 16 GB ROM version and I can say that I have none of the below mentioned lagging problems.
What else is different in my setup is that I am already on MIUI 7 developer.
I should admit also that I did not play any game.
Coming from an Iphone I am kind of used of not having an app drawer and MIUI 7 is pretty eye candy...
Right now I am considering if CM (11 or 12) are worth the try... I think the main gain will be a battery life increase (at least from my other experience with CM), but I cannot see any other benefits, at least for me. I should study a bit more.
aaaah... battery lasts ~1 day. less if you use a lot the screen... max so far for me is 1 1/2 days

If you want to try the CM roms, I need to advise you: see what model your phone is. Actually the CM roms supports only HM2014811-HM2014813. The compiled baseband maybe does not work for you Redmi model.
There's a chance of you apply the rom and it does not have support for LTE networks. Like my case, my phone is HM2014819 and I discovered this misfortune today, after reading tons of posts and articles and flashing 10 times my phone
The good news that the performance of CM is far superior than the MIUI roms.
I own a 2014813
nevertheless the battery life i see as the main gain of CM vs MIUI. Is there something else worthing, I mean like really making a difference?

For example, when Skype is running on the background, it disconnects itself (and its icon disappears from notification line) and when I click its icon again, it opens as if I freshly opened it, loading everything again. It was locked in recent apps so it won't stop. But it will. Even when nothing else is running. Sometimes when I have browser and few other apps running at once (not many, two or three other apps) and a music player, sometimes the music randomly stops - it is killed for RAM even if it's locked (i absolutely hate this on MIUI but fortunately it happens quite rarely now, perhaps the last weekly update messed something up again).
MIUI is extremely RAM-hungry. I mean - if Windows XP can run on 512 MB RAM device and be perfectly usable even for complex work, what is this supposed to be? And with Cyanogen on my Redmi 2, there is still buttload of free RAM when I have several apps opened just like before on MIUI. Currently I'm running CM12 Lollipop ROM made by Zwiliev which I installed today, when I finally got tired of MIUI. And since some V6 build, Mass Storage disappeared so there is no sane way to connect a phone as a flash drive. For me, Cyanogen solved all those things, and many more that I don't feel like writing down here.
On the other hand, the Redmi 2 itself is a decent phone. With very nice headphone output quality - the best of all phones I've ever had. The camera is pretty good, too. The display is beautiful - i thought that it is nuts to have 1024xSomething resolution on a device this small but it really looks very good. And MIUI has in-built root capability, at least. Wifi is powerful enough to have signal where my previous smartphone was already out of range. Replaceable battery and memory card slot. The hardware is indeed very very good for those money so if you don't mind using Cyanogen, buy it
Yay, this is gonna be my tenth post so finally I can send feedback to ROM developers (AT LONG LAST! WHICH PORK HEAD'S IDEA WAS THIS?)
Not sure if this fits the forum but I don't know where else to post this question.
I like my G2 for the big screen on a compact size but it is getting old. Battery isn't what it use to be although it still has great battery life. I'm getting a bit of lag and sometimes stuff won't work for some reason... alarm failed on me a couple of times and I can't replicate the issue, not sure if it was user error but I suspect it wasn't. It's an AT&T G2 running Android 5.0.2
So was thinking that maybe it was time for a new one but here comes my problem... all the good phones I get recommended are huuuuge!! The G2 is very slightly over my size limit already, making it usable with a single hand but sometimes I already have a tough time using it that way, I'll have to move it on my hand a different way to reach something on the very edge of the screen. New phones like the G4 also seem to have worst battery life, having bigger screens with higher resolutions but the same MAH capacity.
I've just seen there are newer Android versions for this phone, including Marshmallow via CyanogenMod. So, is there a phone with similar size, screen and battery life as the G2 or should I try to hang on to it a bit longer? Or just forget about this and get a newer one and get used to it? Maybe a Nexus 6p, seems like a good battery life phone and going pure Android would be nice after spending this much time with a US carrier phone that isn't supported here in Portugal...
Thanks!
S6 got exactly same size(even more slim) with G2 with better cpu, camera, design and screen. However, battery probably won't be as good.

Yes, I thought about that one. Would mean a different sort of use because I know that the battery life is pretty bad comparing it to the G2 but I believe it has fast charge, so....

To be honest, all octa-core cpu isn't battery friendly as SD800/SD801 and Exynos 7420 is already better than SD810/808 and MTK x10 in terms of battery life. S7 got 450mAh more battery but according to leaked info it also a bit bigger than S6 in size.

Had to Google Exynos as I think my tech stuff knowledge stopped at around the Galaxy S1 or S2. Bought a new PC on xmas and had to ask for a straight out recommendation on the store, like "So, from all of these PCs, which one is the best?" (suprise, suprise, the answer was the more expensive one... )
I don't know... I think I'll try flashing something like CyanogenMod and try dragging it a bit more. Maybe what I'm looking for on a phone is now buried in some midtier lineup, I don't know. I bought this one from a friend in an emergency after drowning my HTC OneX in the ocean and I still love it. Liked HTC's Sense a lot more than this LG UI but bigger screen on a similar size phone and tons more of battery life trumps it all.
Uhm, now that I wrote that, "biggest battery life android phone" is a good place for me to start googling. I really don't care about a ton of features or ultra quick cpus if you end up needing to have it always plugged to the wall.
Check out gsmarena they have a good battery checker page for most phones.
The G2 compares well to a lot of the newer more expensive phones.

Thanks for that, knew the site but never had seen that tool! Very helpful! Galaxy S6 Active is always mentioned as one of the best ones but it came up with a Xiaomi Redmi 3 also, which I never heard about and assume it's some Chinese brand. 4200mah battery if specs are to be trusted and a quad-core 616, which should save on juice as TheEndHK was saying.
Right, at least now I have some pointers from where to look around. Thanks guys!

Regular single sim model of S6 got CM12.1 on xda board, not sure about S6 Active though. Redmi3 is only 720P screen and I've just played around with SD615 last week on other phone, the speed is real low compared to SD800 or 7420. SD615/616 is just a slightly faster clocked of SD410. There is no real alternative other than S6 as of now.

Well, the S6 is not an option for me, battery life is way too short and I find myself away from a wall plug too often to be comfortable with such a device. But that sort of answers my question... Yes, the G2 is still very relevant, at least until flagship phones start coming out in normal person's sizes
I'll just flash CyanogenMod13 when a stable version becomes available and see what else comes out. I find it hard to believe that it will take long before one company figures out that it's all very well to come up with big, impressive screen flagship phone but a lot of people don't want to cart around a phablet. Something to compete directly with the one hand handling of an Iphone 6s (or whatever the smaller and latest iphone name is).
You better start flashing as we already have a few MM ROMs for our G2
CM13,AICP,Bliss,Crdroid, ResurrectionRemix all are IMO daily drivers.

I saw the Bliss one and seemed like stable enough. CM13 is still a Nightly release, so I'm a bit scared to try that one yet. I'm not all that into highly customized or customizable roms, I prefer reliability and the closest to stock and simplicity. Oh, and solid support and OTA supports would be nice... any ROM in particular I should look into, giving these preferences? (...long time since I flashed a phone, I glanced through the development threads and it was pretty much gibberish to me )
Well CM13 is the base for them all and if you only flash builds from 2 or 3 days before( flash the 20160207 for example) you have the most recent without being on the edge.
I like AICP(I like customising my ROM)and CM13 as well.
I find it fairly easy to flash different ROMs so hop between them

Battery life isn't such worst in my case. I've got S6 and Z5c dual flagships now (considering to sell out either one indeed), their battery is just identical. The real problem on S6 got poor memory management and during heavy multi-tasking the apps at background will keep reloading to waste extra battery, light to medium user like me should be fine. The battery and memory management been fixed on 6.01 and international model of 920F/925F just started to roll out Marshmallow today in Poland.
However, if your G2 is in good condition and still satisfied with the camera and don't care about Marshmallow. I don't see much points to leave G2.

I hear Marshmallow should greatly improve battery life on any phone, so I do care about that. I think the problems you mentioned for the S6 also happen to certain extent on the G2, I know I used to have battery for significantly longer when I had it on Jelly Bean. But could also be the case of a fresher battery or a lighter usage, I do use it more nowadays.
Camera was always pretty bad IMO. Hardware might be good but the how it encodes the picture just messes everything in most situations. I would like it to do a better job but it's not something that will determine me letting go of a phone. I would never own an Iphone unless I went full Apple but I'm yet to see an Android doing a better job with pictures than an Iphone. And it's not the lens, I'm pretty sure it's the IOS...
But yes, I think I'll stick with this G2 for a little longer. Somethings are starting to give in but maybe I can drag it enough until I come across a phone that gives me some confidence. Besides, I really got used to those buttons on the back Thought they were nonsense the first day I used it but now I would hate to go back to Samsung or HTC way of doing things!
Credit to LG - I also have the G2 and have given up finding a replacement for it. Will wait till it dies then find something less satisfactory. Samsung are bloated and have major battery issues so I wouldn't buy one.

I ended up getting an S7 and I'm very pleased with it. UI has been greatly de-bloated, battery life is great. The other phone I considered at the time I bought it was the just released Huawei P9. Got a P9 Lite for my father the other day and, after playing with it, even the Lite is a fantastic phone.
LG hasn't been great... the G2 was a beast at the time but every other one was a big fail. G4 had a manufacturing problem on the motherboard that affected something like 90% of the phones and most would die within 6 months. Took them forever to admit and fix the problem,

I went from G2 to G3.
When the screen went bad on the G3, I got a warranty replacement and sold that.
Now I have an Octa Core version Note 4 and another G2 as a backup.
The Note 4 Octa core is a huge upgrade from the G2 and is coming down price wise vs. newer Samsung's yet delivers similar performance removable battery and Micro SD card.
I'd look at that or the new One Plus 3T which is also good too

I would also seriously consider that one too if I was in the market for a new phone. Sounds a bit like Apple with their "S" versions, they seem to have improved and fixed the negatives on that one.
G2 works really well and smooth for me except I have an occasional reboot out of nowhere. IDK what's causing it, it's stock rooted ROM.
If you're looking for a new phone recommendation you have to take price into consideration cause otherwise just go with Galaxy S7 (5.1 inch).

That's odd, never happened with mine... maybe a factory reset if it starts to bother you that much, at least you would be able to tell if it's software or hardware related.
I did end up getting an S7 but it was pretty much out of frustration, other phones all had some small thing that was a no-no for me (mainly battery life). Touchwiz is miles away from what it used to be, I don't like a pure Android feel and it ends up being just about the right amount of UI skin. Huawei P9 is a really nice one for a lot less money and I bet the next P10 (if they call it that) will be on par with Samsung from a normal user point of view.
Hello folks,
Quick and simple question- is it worth buying the Redmi 2 Prime now? Is the hardware too outdated for Marshmallow?
I know the Snapdragon 410 isn't the best out there, but is it capable of handling a custom Marshmallow ROM, be fluid and stable? I'm enquiring about the custom ROM since I'm aware that this phone is still officially stuck in KitKat.
I'm a relatively light user. I don't play any games on my current phone (the old Xperia Mini). I mostly just use Telegram, Whatsapp, Sync for Reddit, PocketCasts and Blackplayer Ex. I won't be even browsing all that much.
My current concerns are -
1) Being outdated the moment I buy it- it was released in the middle of last year.
2) The call quality is rather bad, supposedly
3) Heating Issue
Should I be buying something that officially supports a recent OS? (Lollipop or Marshmallow) How important is that I be using a new one?
Cheers everyone!

UPDATE : My opinions about Redmi 2 Prime after owning it for 10 days.
------------------------------------------------------
I know that 10 days ain't a large enough time frame to provide a detailed analysis, but this wasn't meant to be a review per se anyway. There are tonnes of those online- This is more my personal impressions against my expectations.
+ The phone heated up extremely quickly in idle state on the first powerup- less than 5 minutes infact. This raised a red flag in my mind and my immediate thought was to return the device. However, installing the OTA update and suffice to say, that particular heating issue was gone in an instant. Weird, actually.
+ The back cover is quite slippery. Using an additional case fixed it, but added up to the bulk.
+ I like the thickness a lot- felt just right. This is from a person coming from 5 years with an Xperia Mini ST15i.
+ MIUI is really quite the pleasant UI. I spent a few hours going through all that it had to offer, and boy there is a lot. I expected the general UI performance to be much worse, and excluding the few lags and hitches, it was overall a smoothly running system.
- Out of the box, the available RAM was idling around 800-900mb. Launching Chrome made it take a huge hit and fell as much as to 400mb, which made me concerned about the performance again.. However, I quickly replaced Chrome with my go-to Habit browser, and everyone lived happily ever after.
+ However nice MIUI is and can be, my heart was already set for Nova Launcher anyway. Installing Nova Launcher freed up about 200-300mb of RAM. Just goes to show that MIUI really does eat your RAM and doesn't have much to show for it, in terms of performance. This isn't to say that MIUI is bad, its just that its not well optimized, atleast on KK.
+ My next step was to root the phone- an extremely easy process with this handset.
+ Removing all bloatware and a bunch of core processes freed upto 1.3gb of RAM. That was a massive jump, and significantly improved multitasking.
+ Over the course of the next few days, I installed my usual apps and imported data from my previous Android phones. This is about 30 apps, about 8 of which accesses the internet on a timely basis. RAM still hovered around 1.2-1.3gb mark.
+ I have Whatsapp, Gmail, Wallet from Budgetbakers and MLO2 open all the time. Generally RAM is around 900mb-1gb at idle. This is very, very good for my usage, and also good stuff in general.
General Impressions
+ Extremely impressed with the battery life on this thing! In one instance I had about 6.30 hours of screen time with said apps open, occasional youtubing and background syncing- had 39% remaining. Nuts, considering how super low my expectations were.
+ The display is so darn good, AFTER I removed the pre-installed matter screen protector.
+ I don't care about the camera, but I can say its decently better compared to my old phone. I don't use it much.
+ I haven't used the front camera, don't care. Not one to take selfies.
- One aspect of the phone that really shows how many corners were cut to dip down the price, is the micro-usb charging slot. It is simply a rectangular cut out, and not shaped to the contour of the USB slot- meaning, you can damage your phone in no time if you use it carelessly.
I decided to stick with stock MIUI for now, since none of the custom ROMS are 100% stable. I can attribute to this due to Redmi not releasing kernel sources, so any kind of reverse-engineered ROM / Kernel won't be completely reliable for use as a daily driver. Was really disappointed in finding this out, since I was really looking forward to using Marshmallow. Despite that, I got used to being at KK, and truth be told it doesn't really matter all that much as long as you can use you phone and get work done with it.
If you can live with Kitkat and are willing to take the time to tweak the phone, this is a really good buy. I'm seriously impressed by what Xiaomi has brought out to the general public. SO FAR, that is. Lets see if my opinion changes for the worse in the coming months! But by then, this phone might get completely replaced with its newer brother, the Redmi 3.
~bump~
Anyone?
I've recently replaced my Zenfone 5 with a Redmi 2 and I am quite pleased. Snapdragon 410 is not the newest SoC around but paired with 2GB of RAM performs just fine with my usage (no games, mostly web browsing, some rather lightweight apps and YT)., has decent support when it comes to alternaltive firmware (I'm running official CM13.1), it's scheduled for MIUI 8 upgrade and will quite possibly receive an unofficial Android N port of some sort as well.
I have experienced no heating or call quality issues, my average screen on time is around 6 hours. Overall the phone provides really good performance and is well made, especially considering the price.

yes, redmi 2 roms can be flashed on redmi 2 prime. Basically both phones are same the only difference is ram, redmi 2 has 1 gb whereas 2 prime has 2 gb.
Oh thanks guys- I didn't see your replies till now. Ended up ordering the Redmi 2P anyway; couldn't find anything else that matched it at that price point.

I've done my fair share of experimentation with Android devices, especially during the GB-KK era; ROMS, Kernels, Overclocking and what have you. I'm no longer interested in those kinds of things (nor do I have the time) but having said that, I will definitely root and install an AOSP ROM. I don't care about MIUI one bit!
I just need a stable daily driver. Not worried about any sort of wow factor, so I don't mind spending this less as well.
Just wanted to say: If you don't use MIUI you won't have any heating issue at all.
It IS quite outdated. I'd say that buying a Redmi 3S or 3 Pro would be a better idea. Even a Redmi 3. For the apps you said you use, there won't be any problem at all if you use a custom CM13 / 12.1 / XOSP / AOSP
Since i don't know from where you are i can't tell you what good phones you have on your country.

The Redmi 3S / Pro hasn't been released here in India, nor have there been any release dates since a long while. Plus I needed a phone right away.
Nevertheless, its good to know that heating will be reduced with AOSP. Do you know if the phone supports the official stock ROM- the plain unmodified AOSPs? Like the ones found on Moto Gs / Nexus devices. If it does, and does it well, I'm a happy man.

It doesn't have official support for any 100% pure AOSP, only unnoficial. There are plenty of AOSP roms official though, all Ground Zero for example (TipsyOS, TeslaOS and Validus ROM). Also, CM13 is 100% official.
On the unnoficial side of things, there are lots of ROMs to play with, and we have a CAF AOSP which is 100% pure, even if Unnoficial.

Hi guys, I updated my first post to view my impressions after having owned the device for 10 days.
Redmi 2/Prime is Still one of the best Out there , taking into concern the Budget of 7k , and to top it off , Regular Updates of MIUI and Also Redmi 2/Prime is one of the Devices having Much much development in fields of Custom Roms to Kernels to Mods .. surely it may be old now , but Taking into my own words seriously, old is gold ..
There are other devices that are better in specs at the same prize range , (Vibe K5 , Coolpad note 3 lite) , but Quality Matters too , and Our Redmi Defeats both of them , in that + it feels Premium than the other two that I mentioned (I have used all 3) ....
So , should you buy it ? Hell yeah , unless You can increase your Budget and Go for Higher Devices

I would definitely same the for the latter part of your post- it is great up until 7k. If you have the capability to increase your budget by even 1k, definitely look elsewhere. Once the novelty wears off, one can really regret buying this device AT THIS POINT IN TIME. It definitely IS outdated in terms of stable software. That's the important part.
Ofcourse, all this changes if we see a Marshmallow upgrade from Xiaomi. Then this device will be worth recommending again.
I would NOT suggest this device if your plan is to toy with it and experiment with custom ROMS, kernels AND at the same time, use it as your daily driver.
I would only suggest it if you are completely alright with being stuck with KK.

I'm using it with mokee rom. No problem at all. Anything is great.
Whoa whoa whoa @agentmilo, get first things straight at first. The device isn't at all outdated. Because all the processing power that SD410 has, is quite extravagant for our working standard. RAM is not your issue of concern at all. Let all the game played by the player who knows the best of it, the Android itself. Android doesn't slow down for lack of RAM, I mean we are not in the 512MB age. Every other software available for our device is 90% stable. And the one's like RR is 100%. The device heats up based on whay and how are you dealing with it, and every other device heats up naturally, because that's the basic physics between semiconductors bro. Performance will vary on the kernel you're using, and try it with latest ultimate BK, it's everything it could be. The beast is still good enough for our everyday tasks to medium high gaming. And for you, it's overkill.
Hi guys
Don't know if this is the right spot to post this but, I need some help chosing a smartphone. Since I'm upgrading from a note 3 SM-9005 I would like to upgrade to something similar. So what brings me here to this forum? I love galaxy s7 edge and I would love to get it. But... since I can only buy the international version and from my experience with an galaxy S2 and sammsung 0 suport over the cpu source code, I am afraid the phone dosent get custom rom suport in the future. I've been browsing around and reading a lot, but tbh I'm not totally convinced I should spend money on this since theres a lot of diferent opinions on the device.
Several other things concern me:
The adreno performance is something I like, even though exynos has better batery life (comparing adreno and mali in terms of gaming and everyday usage)
the diference in the camera sensors
Future custom ROM suport
Overal Fragility of the device (I've been browsing around this forum, and saw several complaints about screen cracks, burned out micro USB amongst other problems)
Is the diference between 2k and 1080p displays noticeable?
So guys, I want to known your opinion about this phone. From both exynos and snapdragon users of what makes this phone worth over other brands .
Also, I encourage sugestions of other brands since I want something future proof.
Sorry if my english sucks, but Its not my main language.
Sincerely

Hi shade,
I can answer a few of those questions for you.
Difference in cam sensors, is negligible from what I can tell.
Custom ROMs? Nope. It's all just stock based ROMs with a few tweaks, CM does exist but it's far from stable and plenty of stuff doesn't work yet.
If you're an idiot, it'll break. Be careful, use a thin case, and original cables, and you can't go wrong.
Yes it is, and once you get used to it, 1080p seems a bit... well... boring. Just kidding, the difference is noticeable, but unless you use your phone to watch HD movies, it makes no difference in normal usage like roasting a friend in a group chat or using Snapchat.
I don't have the Snapdragon one, but just know, if you do get one, the chances of getting Custom ROMs goes from 'a bit' to 'none at all' since the SD 820 variants all have locked bootloaders.
If you're really looking for something future proof? How about a OnePlus 3T? You'd save a ton of money, get some more internal storage, 2 extra gigs of RAM and a ton of custom ROM support.
I'll sell you mine with two cases (unicorn beetle pro, clear speck candyshell) and a 2 year square trade warranty! All can be yours, make me an offer I can't refuse!

Thanks for awsering
So the 820 has a locked bootloader? That sucks a lot. Well, I guess with the news that cyanogenmod is dead it isen't relevant anymore. I have a good deal for a S7E Gold for 400€ so I'm going to get it.
Thanks for your help! Merry Christmas
smg9350 is all unlocked and smacks exynos around in the benchmark area. Dont give the guy bad info.

Well travis82 just mentioned that the SM-G9350 which is the Chinese variant has the Snapdragon 820, and an unlocked bootloader.
Just check what bands your carrier uses for 3G and LTE and make sure the phone supports them, if you're interesting in buying the chinese variant.

Jeez, okay, no need to get so hostile.
You gotta admit that the Exynos has way better battery life though.
nah i seem to get better battery than exynos varients. more cores doesnt mean better overal. ie: amd vs intel. is one example. but really the op should wait for next years flagships, they will be much better, and a die shrink to boot.
Well I went ahead and bought the phone. So now I am suprised that it has the xsg csc. Do you guys known if I can flash my country's original stock rom without tripping knox?
