So I just came across this tweet from droidx - https://youtu.be/QicDqTKb_sU supposedly this root method will work with any android phone 5.1.1 or lower. Lots of caution needed here due to the origin and amount of permissions needed, but he did show it rooting a Verizon note 4. I have the apk but haven't tried it as I'm using a prerooted image and haven't flashed back to stock.

UPDATED INFO (5/13/15)
1) English version is available here through XDA (LINK);
2) This is a temporary root that doesn't survive a reboot (this is due to write protection); and
3) A permanent root solution (for the Note 4) is being worked on off of XDA (due to some thread circumstances) (reference is here).
Right now there is no word of anyone working on a Droid Turbo permanent root solution.
New perma-root discussion for the Note 4 is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60713495
Update (5/18/15)
1) There is a new script out that will delete kinguser and install supersu instead! The link is here. Keep in mind that this script will need to be modified for our device, but according to the script authors it should be applicable.
2) It has been recommended to soft reboot the device using this app from the play store. There are a million of these type of apps available, but this one is being used on the Note 4 side.

Download the version directly from their website. I'm going to remove the English site link.
The official version doesn't have that issue.
I forwarded over to @JustinCase but he doesn't have time to dig into it.

Of course it attempts to bypass Android security, it's an app that gives you root.

I just read a ton of the note 4 thread, and many people had to try a few times to get it to work. Supposedly this is just a temp root method on devices with write protection. If you do get root, try a reboot and see if it sticks.
I'm not sure if this method in it's current form gets us anything over what we have now but it could lead to more.
Mine failed too

I've heard enabling allow mock locations might be necessary.
They are working on a perm method but nothing yet. This is very interesting.
FYI this doesn't install SuperSU or let it be installed.
Yeah, temp root. No write permissions.

So what's the point if write protection is still on?
I don't believe this kind of sites
tried the app and the pc app method.. both didtn work for the droid turbo. now im thinking they stole some info.

I got a Droid Razr M for an upgrade, Worked great so i rooted it, Still worked great all that day, then i went to sleep and when i woke and the WiFi would not work!
The toggle switch turned a darker gray, When i tap it it turns on then in a split second turns back off.
I have done a Factory Data Reset and then i did a hard reset and then i wiped the hole thing out and re flashed it to its original state. Still would not work!
So as a last resort contact Motorola for support and they tell me that i had rooted my device and there is nothing they can do. I didn't say anything about rooting it so they must be logging all users data. (Invasion of Privacy?)
So i am back here again, Not being able to use WiFi, On a 2GB/M plan. f%$king peace of $#!+.

It is probably your fault. A broken radio is your burden why do you think they do not want you rooting? The radio partition can get borked very easily. You need to renew it.

Ok, SaturnsVoid... so, first, sorry to hear about the problem. Motorola/VZ is giving you BS... rooting won't break your WiFi unless you did something or installed something that would...
What's your current system version?
Have you taken any OTAs since you had it? If not, you may still be able to unlock.
Also, may want to try using WiFi Connection Fixer on the Play Store (requires root...)
If those don't work, try PMing me... I can help you work it out...
Hi everyone, this is my first post here (I think) so please go easy on me.
I've been trying all night to root my Droid Razr M to no avail.
The phone is a Japanese Softbank model of the developer edition that I in my infinite stupidity updated to 4.1.2
I tried motofail2go to root my phone but I had no success. One of the steps using this method is to press volume up and power button together to trigger a bug report, as the author of this exploit said. However, upon pressing these buttons, no such thing happens. I manually selected the 'bug report' option in developer options and went ahead with the process anyway.
Upon rebooting, superuser does not appear to be working (Binaries not installed).
I tried a different method using CWRecovery to install root zip files, but that didn't work either.
Can someone please help me out here? If you want to know more details I'd be glad to answer questions.

You have to Odin back to stock. You can't just wipe in factory recovery, it still leaves the eng kernel in place.

I removed all traces of the icon in the imsservice.apk and it is still showing up. I'm going to dig into SystemUi.apk and see if it's in there. Will be busy until tomorrow catching Pokemon at a PG meet up, but I'll keep you guys updated.
Yeah that shouldn't be showing up if you're completely stock. IF you still have the eng-kernel then it'll be there no matter what you do unless you either edit the imsservice.apk file or odin back to stock factory rom.

There are threads throughout the forum about removing the rcs icon in the status bar. It shouldn't be too difficult to remove. I was able to do it but I was receiving an "imsservice error" every time I called certain people. Which lead me to believe it wasn't completely effective so I reverted completely back to stock (it was gone) then flashed the engkernel (which brought it back) and from there I simply considered it a small price to pay for root access. Wouldn't you agree?

But I can't seem to find a dedicated thread on it. So if there's one out there post the link or feel free to comment instructions, any useful instructions will be added to the OP

Dont need root and won't trip Knox

Hi, here's something from our friends with a Verizon s7 edge, they've written a step by step on how to flash the U firmware and what to do afterwards. What You and us t-mobile users need to flash is SM- G935U (TMO region) firmware which u can find on sammobile.com. Please read the instructions carefully and best of luck with flashing. Cheers!

Keep in mind there's also a lot in here that doesn't pertain especially if you don't need root so be careful people, this as Mag says is for Verizon but the process is the same just make sure you have the T-Mobile files if on T-Mobile. You can download at SamMobile I have a SM-G935T which is now a G35U with the new modem APK1 and have wifi calling and VOLTE in my mobile network settings and ZERO bloat which is why U firmware is desired. It doesn't have any carrier bloat because it's not for any carrier so none have installed all their bloat so it's very fast. You will lose root and everything but can redo it and reroot also.. just make sure you're getting the right files and not flashing VZW on to T-Mobile etc etc. I ALMOST did then realized lol. I Got excited. I was never going to root so none if that mattered but I tried it and after all the suggested tweaks and fixed it still ran unacceptable for me so I'm not rooted at all now. Too buggy and too many weird FCs and errors/bugs so I factory rest and flashed U and new modem and my phone has never been faster even when rooted and CPU setting tweaked etc. (Too many bugs as stated)

No because you're flashing an official firmware not a rom. No root and won't trip Knox as other have reported. This is true for all variants since it's an official firmware.

I know I'm replying to some old posts here. But just
re-ittirating what others have said since many are just now starting to do the whole U thing.

Will Xposed work with no issues on this?
I'm currently rooted with Xposed installed , but the lag is driving me nuts even with all the tweaks

Prob not. Many people including me have done ALL of the post root modifying to make it run better when rooted with very little success. I tried every single post root method to try and get it stable and nothing made a difference and if it did it sure wasn't stable anyways. So bad that I Reodined the entire thing and started fresh and didn't root. The root is very unstable and simply not worth it. I don't need root for anything I care about anyway and my S7 Edge is plenty fast. and running the U firmware there's no bloat except like 2-3 apps which I can live with and that was one major reason to root anyway (to delete the bloat) so meh to root for me.... If you read back many have reported this. I don't need nor want root and when I saw how bad it ran I immediately re did it all. Now it's lightning fast, I get amazing LTE speeds because if the APK1 MODEM and I'm in one if the 319 cities supporting the 4x4 MIMO LTE that the APJ1 Takes advantage of. My LTE is faster than most people's wifi. So I recommend d regarding the Odin and forgetting about root. It's just too buggy and I'm by no way a noob. Been here fir 10 years so I know what I'm doing and I couldn't get it stable enough even applying every single post root suggestion. It ran like crap and wasn't even usable unfortunately. No offense to the root team whatsoever they achieved root and kudos to them it's just not established enough to be a daily driver sorry to say.
My latest LTE speed abiut 20 mins ago. Not wifi....LTE..LOL it's amazing if yoyre in T-Mobile and you're in one if the cities supporting it. I imagine everywhere in the US will sooner or later it most cities. It's relatively new but I'm getting speeds unheard of. Before this I was getting like 10 mbps download and 8 Mbps upload
Not it's more like 6p-70 and 40-70 depending in where in my city I am. It varies deoending on how close to towers and what not you are if course. But damn it's fast.. wow

is there a way to install this U firmware and then simply root it and not install all the other junk? I love it running U stock with the new modem because it HAULS ass, but I want to root so I can edit the build.prop and since you have to be rooted that's hay I ask. But the root causes all kinds of issues and post -root stuff needs to happen to get it even stable which none worked for me, a few did but it ran horrible so I immediately returned to stock and redid the U firmware. so is the something like a way to just root for file access only without it modifying anything else? I doubt it but don't know much abut the U firmware except it runs amazing until rooted at least from everything I'm reading. a couple peeps claim there's is running amazing even rooted but I have doubts...mine ran like total crap even after applying all the tweaks and kernel settings with Trickster and the like (which I know how to use very well and bought it and have owned and used it for years....any ideas? I want to edit the lcd from 640 to about 580 is all and don't want to root if it's going to bork everything up again...
TIA

Hi -
I am a person that just has to have his phone rooted. Dont ask me why, but I do. And I love custom ROMS. Since I do not really see any custom ROMS for the S7 yet,
I will settle for just rooting my S7, I was hopping someone would be kind enough to point me to the correct files needed to ROOT my phone and maybe a small odin walkthrough.
Phone info:
Galaxy S7 SM-G935T 6.0.1
Baseband G935TUVU4APK1
Build Number MNB29M.G35TUVU4APK1
Also ... what about TWRP support ? I want to be able to nandroid backup. Is there a version of TWRP out yet for the S7 ?
Thanks all !!

Follow the instructions in the O.P. of the post-root issues *exactly*. Don't skip anything and don't add anything. Trickster is not listed in it. I followed it exactly and my rooted U just plain smokes!

The answer to both of these is that since the bootloader is locked, you can't install custom recoveries which makes custom Roms a lot harder (but not impossible!) There's two that are in the Roms subforum (TEK and Echoe) but I've personally found stock U firmware + root to be the fastest/most stable.

Is your reason for "have to have root" for a specific reason or no? This root us really laggy and buggy as hell so if I were you I wouldn't do it. There's no Roms really. Well two I think but it's going to be more if a headache than the benefit of root. No one "has" to have root. What do you need that's so important by rooting. That's silly....

Please provide more info what phone are you flashing. Where did you get the files, are you flashing the home CSC or other one what's exactly happening. Fail is too vague to help you fix.

I'm not sure bud. I LOVE the U firmware and the APK1 modem for Tmobile have made my LTE VERY fast and the U firmware as well with ZERO bloat. I wouldn't downgrade anyway but can't answer your question, I simply don't know. Are you on ATT or something? I haven't heard of that firmware even...but I've been on Tmobile for about 6 years or so...
