Battery / Equalizer / Wifi reception - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
Around two weeks ago i got my Note 4 (910F), i absolutely love it (ofcourse), but i have a few problems. BTW: I rooted my phone right away and i'm running official samsung lollipop.
First: Battery
The first week the battery life was amazing, around 6h of s/o, but now i only get around 3,5. I have no idea why this is happening because i'm not using any different apps than a week ago. Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this drain?
Second: Bass boost/Equalizer
For all my music i use Spotify, but the bass is very weak and the volume very low. Before i got my N4 i had an I9305 (S3 4G) and i bass boosted it with agni kernel, the sound quality was amazing. Do any of you guys know if there's something similar for the Note 4?
Third: Wifi reception
The worst thing of all is my wifi reception. I live in the attic, and when i had my S3 the wifi reception was pretty great, not perfect, but it did the job. Now i can't even lie on the left side of my bed because i don't get any bars. And i know it's a problem with the N4 because on my xbox, chromebook and laptop i don't have the problem, i mostly get 4 out of 5 bars. Do anyone know if it's a hardware problem or a software problem, and if there's any way to fix this problem?
and at last i just have a simple question: can i use xposed installer (with lollipop), because i heard some things about xposed bricking your phone.
Thanks!

If you know an answer to any of the questions above, don't hesitate to reply please

Love my SGS2 but need your help

Hi Guys,
I have just moved from my iphone4 (well not completely) to an SGS2 which is my first dance with android.
Am quite happy with my purchase however am having some issues.
1) The phone gets warm at times. Sometimes too warm. Any of you facing that issue. Sometimes the screen is warm other times the area around the camera gets really warm.
2) I m not getting decent wireless coverage. In places around my house where I get 2 bars on my iphone, the SGS2 gets barely one. Which is very annoying considering the SGS2 is the best phone out there!
If anyone is facing the above issues and have been able to solve them, pls advise.
Thanks advance,
a2zt

I have come from an iPhone 4 too. Yes the phone does get very warm around the camera and screen in certain situations.
Wifi signal is pretty erratic, but speeds are the same as my iPhone. I just think the signal bars are not accurate.
You will also find that battery life is not as good either.
It's a great phone in all other respects and hopefully future updates will improve things
when its warm, i mean hot, the dual core cpu goes wild, no worries, its a safety feature built in, so you don't end up with a bunch of melted plastic in your hands
the wifi signal its strange, but not just on this phone, on every phone i have ever tested, ~250, i have seen this weirdness in action, in places where i get full signal on one phone, i get zero bars on another... so don't worry and try to connect to networks with at least 2 bars

allthough theres this big op bug on the sgs ii some of it is fixed in new roms.
Hopefully soon samsung will fix this
Also when it gets warm for no reason wifi sharing may be running also eating up my battery.
androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2/365603-ridiculous-wi-fi-sharing-bug.html
Without rooting I use "osmonitor" app to detect when it is eating up the CPU making the phone warm and then I have to kill wifisharing manually.

From previous discussions, it seems the SGS2 and certain routers don't get along well. A couple of us with high-end Netgear's (N600/N750) seem to be getting excellent coverage. I get good signal through three stories of concrete with very little battery drain (one of the by-products of a weaker signal). I know you shouldn't have to replace your router to please your phone, but it's something to consider.
Thanks for the responses guys.
I am using Dlink E2000 router with an external antenna. Does that play nice with SGS2?
Any suggestions on which custom Rom I should try?

Yes multiple posts on this topic dont worry its dual core .

Bars do not measure signal strength use a proper measure like

Again multiple posts on the forum .
Custom rom you choose but rooting and custom rom voids warranty .
Villain rom for me at present .

I updated to the new XEU KF3 official ROM last night and it improved Wi-Fi strength for me noticeably.

Sent my S2 in for warranty replacement.

I am thinking of selling it if it comes in a brand new box from Samsung. It was a manufacturer defect so I hope they won't send me a refurb. I just want to confirm if you guys are having the same issues I did as to gouge if I just had a bad sample or if the entire line has these issues.
Keep in mind I have spent tens of hours trying to correct these issues via various ROM's, Modems and Kernels, including KH3 which was the best.
My issues were as follows:
-Wifi can't connect at any McDonalds wifi. Works at starbucks, sometimes.
-4g/3g uploads always dip in the speedtest chart for 2 seconds then bumps right up
-Wifi sometimes says connected but doesn't actually work. Didn't happen too often.
-banding on the screen, blobs on screen in dark room/black image on screen.
-phone was warped, determined I just had a bad one as all the other ones at the store were perfectly flat.
-call volume extremely low even when using the secret code to bump it to 100%. my loaner phone a motorola droid is twice as loud as the s2. I can actually hear my girlfriend talk to me now and not have to say what? pardon? every 2 sentences.
-people can't hear me in calls if i'm talking in a low voice, like anyone would at the end of a long stressful work day. even with noise reduction off.
-stock rom has under 6 hours battery life under medium use, easily fixed with custom rom, but still it shouldn't be a necessity to void your warranty untill official firmware is released for your provider, just so you can use your phone for more than 6 hours.
-phone gets hot, can be solved by undervolting cpu/gpu.
Please confirm if you are also having these issues, to help me make a decision regarding what I should do when the phone comes back.
Cheers, Tony
I am getting none of those issues. Haven't tested McD's wifi, but every other hotspot worked fine for me so far.

easily fixed with custom rom,

I would be quite happy to run the phone on stock rom and if i had the problems you posted phone would have been returned .

Curious observation in battery life on ICS LQ3

I have noticed accidentally yesterday that after I had my stock headphones pluggeed in the Note, the typical curve of the battery drain became much flatter and the different wakes during screen off have almost disappeared. The moment I unplugged the headphones, the battery drain went back to the usual 2-3% per hour on standby.
I am running stock LQ3 and stock kernel. I am rooted, as I have flashed it through Mobile ODIN, over stock, rooted LPY.
I have quite a lot sync-accounts - twitter, facebook, gmail, email, weather widget etc. so I am quite used to relatively short battery life but the trick with the headphones came as quite a surprise.
Before writing this post I decided to test it today as well and it is the same.
So, could someone test this and report? I think that if this proves to be true and common, the devs could easily track what's happening exactly and sort things out, so that battery can live longer without the headphones plugged in.

Ugh...I am terribly sorry, this was meant for the General Discussion. Please, admin, move it there.
I've noticed that same if the SAR of the last samsung mobile is very low, the reception is quite good compared to other phones.
Do you notice also an improvement of the signal reception? Because if it is the case, it is that your headphones are used as a secondary antenna, giving the phone a stronger reception and less power consumption (better signal = less need of power usage for processing the signal)
This is just a theory...
After some ICS ROMs I went back to Gingerbread, mainly due to poor battery life.
When Litening ROM 2.0 was published I flashed that one. I liked the GB version a lot. The battery life was remarkable, a lot better than previous ICS ROMs. Because Litening is not much supported I tried Alba, also LQ3. A surprise because battery life was the same. I think I'll stick to ICS this time.

Alba often uses LB2 modem (from GB) in his ROMs - maybe it is the reason. I myself observed huge batterey drain on latest ICS ROMs while connected to Wi-Fi at my workplace. Fixed it by flashing ZCLP5 modem (from early "LP5 leak" ROM).

Hm, that is an interesting theory. I am not sure, however, that the headphones' cable really improves GSM radio reception. I think it is only for FM reception. Of course I have no knowledge behind that, just thinking.
I have frozen lots or apps in Titanuim Backup like:
- the whole range of SNS's
- Social Hub
- Wi-fi sharing manager
- the infamous wssyncmlnps
- software update service, etc
Also I have stopped a bunch of receivers, using Autorun Manager Pro, and disabled a lot of processes from Autostarts.
This should mean that I have opted out the most common battery drainers. I have tried to disable auto-sync for the time being, but that does not seem to be much of a drainer, so maybe the real problem comes somewhere from the modem.

Hey dimcus, i've been having this WiFi vs battery issues with some routers(including the one at home), weird enough it doesn't happen on some of them. I did read somewhere about flashing te Modem file, what leads me to a couple of questions ir you don't mind. Are you on ICS? Do i need to be root to flash the Modem file? If not, any risks involved? I'm on stock ICS LPY DBT.
Thanks in advance,
VR
I flashed the ZCLP6 modem earlier today, guessing that it would be better than ZCLP5.
It is too early to judge but first impressions are that maybe there is a slight improvement in battery on 3G but not something worth it over the stock XXLPT that I used to have and generally battery drain on wifi seems as bad as it has been ever since I flashed ICS.
I have read that some people dared to wipe their Notes and after that most of the problems had disappeared but I don't want to risk getting some brick.
I will try several other popular modems and will report back.

Please let us know how you get on with them. Currently on LR1 modem and noticing a few strange wakelocks.
I have been with LR1 modem for about 40 hours now. What is better than the ones before is the much better behaviour on wi-fi. Other than that it is hard to tell any differences. So far 7 hours since unplugged, 1 h screen-on, half time wifi, half time 3g - battery is at 75%

wow.. that;s great.. i upgraded to ICS 5 days ago.. super poor battery..
then I heard to go with speedmod kernel, which I did.
no change..
Can you'se tell HOW TO change the modem?? I need to do something... mine just dont last worth a crap.. half day..
should I try a modem? and can you please say how to do just the modem??.
my baseband is N7000XXLPT
and build # is IML74K.XXLPY
thank you!
Unfortunately after several different ICS Roms (From Stock LPY to Cleanote 2.20) with several different Kernels (Stock, SpeedMod, Goku and more) and few modems (XXLPT, ZCLP5) I had to go back to Ginger due to extremely poor battery life. With all roms /kernels/modems combination the behavior was very similar. The phone was going into deep sleep pretty easily when idle with very low battery drain. On the other hand when using the phone I was getting about 10% drain each 20 minutes (A little less with data wifi and all sync off). I was also getting overheating with temp most of the times over 40 deg C. This drain was almost the same even with system energy savings on. I could not understand the reason for this strange behavior considering that many other users are having great battery life on ICS with their devices. Anyone is experiencing this situation ? NB now with Ginger the battery life is ok.

I am facing a huge battery drain issue. Used the phone for downloading and playing games and general usage yesterday and battery only lasted 3.5 Hours. Need to continuously watch the battery as it drops about 10-20% on idle. Checked the wakelocks and mainly wifi related, the phone is going into deep sleep just fine. HELP PLEASE!!!
lol continuously watching means you're the wake lock.
btw phone only has 3-3.5 hour screen on time. When playing games its usually less.

[Q] Non stop hissing noise, get a replacement?

I've had my D800 since november 2013, a few days ago, I started hearing hissing or high pitched noise kinda like the sound of a leaking capacitor coming from the camera, LED light and rear microphone area . From what I know of, some people experienced this and the noise only occurs either with headphones or whenever theres a call taking place, BUT this sound I'm experiecing is non stop, even with the phone screen off and just sitting idle.
Idk if this also has to do with my battery life being, I'd say not the best in the past 2 weeks, been getting 12-18 hour days with 2 1/2h to 3 hours SOT sometimes my battery would be at 15% by the time 12 hours has passed, and this is with auto sync off etc.and light to moderate usage.
Should I get a replacement?

I wrote a thread about this. It's well known on the N4, once heard cannot be unheard.
I doubt you would be able to proove it as not everyone hears it. To some extent it's present in all devices... from LG.
So even an exchange may not help. Even though that's what was commonly done in the N4.
But might get better?

well i`ll start my answer with battery cuz i`m always wondering about battery xD u using stock ye? in some review i`v heard that guy was talking about a software related battery usage, he said that when used device heavy, battery consumption was low funny yeh? xD and he said that after this sometimes battery started drain, so it maybe a software issue... since i`m using a G Pro 2 port i have increased battery as i see (about 4 or 5 sot with moderate usage, sometime it goes to 6 and even 7hr sot.
about hissing sound: if u using stock KK from LG than it`s a normal, i have bluetooth headset and i never had problem but some guy said that hissing on weird headset is normal on KK, idk on JB
but if u want replacement and if its free then u losing nothing it`s my opinions just by the way
Hope i helped a little bit

Yeah mate im using the stock AT&T KitKat ROM, and yeah i heard that noise persists on headset however i dont have any headset or bluetooth on at all, im thinking the noise is somewhat hardware related but like the guy above said that its common on basically all LG devices, however I'll just take the hit and get a replacement nothing to really lose IMO, I have 10 days to keep the other device and see if that same problem occurs on the replacement

Note 4 Problems!

I have a galaxy note 4 on sprint. When I first got the phone, it ran great. I love the long battery life and multitasking abilities. However, I've noticed recently that it seems to be running slower. I'm on stock, unrooted firmware and I've only had the phone about six months. When I first got the phone, battery life was excellent. I only seemed to lose about ten percent battery for an hour of normal use (screen on, low/moderate processor use). Now I lose about twice that. I also downloaded the AnTuTu benchmark test and ran it. When I first did this with this same phone six months ago, I achieved a score of around 50,000 but I ran the test again last night and scored 27,000. I had a friend run the test on his note 4, also about six months old, and he scored about 50,000. I also cannot connect to a Bose Soundlink Bluetooth speaker that I used to have no problems with (still with same note 4 unit) and I had to factory reset my android wear watch to get it to connect to my phone, another issue I've never had. On top of that, I can no longer get the phone to vibrate with the arrival of a text message. It will give a notification and sound, but no vibrate. These issues are frustrating, especially as the phone is only around six months old. Any help with this stuff would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think the current and last few versions of Google Play Services have a battery drain bug. Google Play Services (which I'll abbreviate as GPS) is updated automatically via the Play Store, but you don't confirm the update like a normal app. So it basically updates without your knowledge.
My battery life was normal on my ATT Note 4 about 2 weeks ago, with Location always on (power saving), power saving mode on, bluetooth always on, and my Moto 360 connected. Lately though, the battery life has started dropping faster. I used to get home from work with about 75% battery left. Now I'm between 50 and 65%.
If GPS is indeed the issue, then all we can do is wait for Google to fix it in a newer version. You can uninstall the updates, or even manually install a certain version, but within about 24hrs, GPS will automatically update itself to the latest version again.

Thanks for the information! I didn't think of that. Would that cause my AnTuTu benchmark score to be low, as well? The phone just seems to lag sometimes and the benchmark score seems to be evidence that it's more than just my perception

Maybe?
You can try uninstalling (which will downgrade to a very old version) GPS updates via settings-general-applications-all-google play services
You won't be able to properly use many Google apps while downgraded though, and GPS while probably auto update over night. But while downgraded, don't open Play Store and try Antutu again to see if there is any improvement. Run your phone like normal too and see if battery life improves. If all this is better, then it's definitely GPS.

Not sure what happened, but the benchmark score is back up (around 46000). Battery life has not gotten any better, and I'm having more Bluetooth problems, specifically with my LG g watch now. This is frustrating. Anybody have any idea? Would it be within the realm of possibility to get the phone replaced under warranty? I've only had it since February. I'm also having problems with text messages actually sending. They show as sent from my phone, but people don't receive them
