[Q] Kies won't restore my system and app settings !! - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I have S5 Duos with UAE region and upgraded to Lollipop for Russia via Odin as UAE was too late to release.
Then, I fully backed up my device through Kies 3 (not Google) and wiped data factory reset & cache partition (I guess I shouldn't!), then flashed to my region's Lollipop and did the restore by Kies.
Now Kies haven't restored my system settings, app configurations, homescreen icons arrangement, they're all GONE!
Any hope to get them back through my backup or something?
Your help is definitely gonna save my day!
Thank you,
Cheers

KIES is cr4p, doesn't work for restoring backups, I learned my lesson with it too
Nandroid is the only sure way

I had to re-configure everything all over again!
Thanks a lot Samsung!

Kies and my Note don't like eachother

Hey guys,
I reverted back to stock (Bulgarian) via Odin, factory reset the device a few times, tried different releases but Kies still says "Your device does not support update from Kies"
Every time i flashed a new stock (all Bulgarian releases ) in Kies after the f/w versions it says (KOR)
Any ideas?
thanx in advance
try changing the csc
*#272*<your IMEI>#
and choose Bulgaria if it is on the list
but this will do a factory reset so backup any apps, contacts, sms ... etc
Thanks but tried already. doesnt change a thing
hope there are other ideas

update firmware without data loss

Ok, first of all, sorry if there is a topic with this.. but i couldn't find anywhere.
i installed the I9505XXUBMEA on my i9505 device with odin, rooted it and he can't be recognized by kies, so here is my question.
can i update it with odin to I9505XXUBMF8 without data loss?
if yes... my firmware region is DBT (Germany), i have to use the DBT version or another one is ok?
Thanks in advance

Hey,
The funny thing is that I have had the same question a few hours ago. I'm from Germany, too. I thought a data-backup in CWM would solve this problem. So I have formatted all partitions (except internal and external storage) and have installed the stock firmware. But when I tried to restore the data partition, it wasn't there anymore.
So you really should backup your "backups" folder from sd card to your pc or external sd card before you format something!

sometimes your lucky enough to just update without data loss but if your run into issues im afraid the only way is to wipe data factory reset

Yes,If you update Via ODin data loss is not there. Some Updates via ODIn would have "WIPE " written next to them in case they are going to Delete the Data..
It is recommended to Factory reset After Flashing Via ODIn.
Why don't you install Titanium Backup and Backup all your Data+App from that and Then flash the latest Version and Restore the Same
thank you all guys.
i'll make a titanium backup and do some tests when i have some time
better be sure that if anything goes wrong, i havean assistance )

why don't you flash your phone via odin and take the backup yourself?
Me too, I want one too. my cwm cant backup properly, always fails
Is This What You Need?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465800
Its a Stock kernel collection for SGY by Doky73
I removed bloatwares there including the Samsung Related apps, and I can't update the software, Tried returning to my DXKK4 NANDROID BACKUP and tried upgrading via OTA , after 7 %, the phone reboots. In short, I need to flash my phone but I can't because my USB Mass Storage mechanism on the phone seems to be damaged, and It won't connect on my computer but charges the phone . Still using it until now but started saving my money on a mid-end phone, I'll buy either a Galaxy Young (1 GHz, Android JellyBean) or a Galaxy Star since they are released here already

Issues after updating firmware

Hello guys, I am asking this for my friend, he has a GT9500 S4, he has just updated his device yesterday, while updating (before device turns on) it was stuck of updating contacs or somthing like that he can't remember exactly, it got hot so he removed the battery and waited to cool down, device started normally but wouldn't show his contacts, all it says is "Updating contacts list", phone lags a lot, doesn't recieve notification (ea from whatsapp), camera photos is not available in gallery / My Files, only screenshots and whatsapp media (photos and videos). I told him to restart his phone again, but didn't fix the problem, I told him to clear data of Contacts and Contacs storage, didn't fix the problem.
Here's the infor in about device:
Model Number: GT-i9500
Android Version: 4.3
Baseband Version: i9500JKUEML1
Kernel Version: 3.4.5-2092849 , [email protected]#1
Build Number: JSS15J.i9500XXUENA2
What should he do now ? Reset to factory settings ? or it will not work since it got stuck while installing the new firmware ?
Have him download the firmware for his device from sammobile or samsung-updates.com and flash it in download mode using Odin. That should fix his problem.
Since he is not so good in these things, I might do it for him.
Is there any chance that all this could be fixed by a factory reset ?
Where you had a bad flash, the odds aren't favorable towards a factory reset fixing this. It won't hurt to try however.

HI SPEED.LIGHT
You can retray to flash by odin the good firmware
I dont know if you speak about hard reset or wipe data
The risk with the hard reset ( not wipe all datas )
is lost efs (partition ) or imei
In some times
Evaluate the risk

Hello man
Like mentionned up
Dont make hard reset abusively
Flash odin with laptop : portable pc
( to avoid electrical power cut etc...)
For much infos yu can tray xda research : imei & efs
Odin doesn't factory reset, so there's no risk of losing the IMEI. A factory reset doesn't touch the modem, where the IMEI is usually stored, nor does it touch the EFS partition. Thus you will be ok doing a factory reset. Nevertheless, if you can make a backup using Wanam's EFS tool, do so before starting.

Thanks for the clear precision

Ok sounds straightforward, I will do a backup of everything he needs then backup of EFS, then flash via odin.
It actually is pretty straightforward. Just make sure to use the mentioned tool, as it backs up the hidden partitions on the S4 that other backup tools miss.

Soft-bricked and recovered backup. Now unable to root.

Hello everyone.
N910W running stock Samsung firmware, 5.1.1 Lollipop.
I had my phone rooted a few months back and decided I wanted to try a Marshmallow rom. I created a backup of my pre-rooted device a few days prior, so I wasnt worried.
The rom I flashed for some reason would not allow me to use my carriers network, but only other networks. So i restored my unrooted backup.
Now whenever I try to root my phone, I get a bootloop. Every method I've tried so far (TWRP flash and ODIN, pretty much) has produced similar results. I could find the original samsung firmware for the device and flash it over and start from scratch, but I don't want to lose my data if I don't have to.
Halp. Send halp.
thanks guys.
P.s. i tried using the search, but this is either a unique problem or the search bar sucks.
