OK so I have read different way to save battery power on rooted nexus s but don't know what is best. I am currently using setcpu but can not tell a difference. If anyone has another way please share in great detail because I am new to rooted phones.

Turning off the mobile data connection will make an enormous difference you won't believe it.
Second is use WiFi when available, it will save tons of battery.
Why does there always have to be a funny guy.

Not so sure about the wifi part. I've compared the phone idling on 3G vs. idling on wifi and with wifi there's definitely more power draw. Confirmed it with System Panel, the CPU is pegged at around 10% usage while idling with wifi vs. about 1% when idling on 3G.
This has been consistent with all my other android phones too (Nexus One, Vibrant, MT4G)

You're right, wifi uses more power than 3G, and they both use more power than 2G. When idling I'd definitely want to sit on 2G if anything. When you actually need an internet connection though, wifi and 3G will be more efficient. They'll use more power but will download much faster to make up for it.
Saving power is the same for almost all android devices:
1) turn off mobile network when not in use
2) turn off wifi when not in use
3) turn off gps
4) turn off automatic syns( if you dont use them)
5) brightness set to low
6) turn off live wallpapers
7) use a black wallpaper
8) turn off haptic feedbacks
9) set screen time out to a smaller interval.
all these steps might help you but it kind of takes away the charm of the phone imho.

It's definitely the opposite of that, its counter intuitive but WiFi uses significantly less battery life over 3g. I can post some numbers when I get home tonight if anyone's interested. But a good test is leave your phone on WiFi all night, then repeat on 3g and see the enormous difference. Better yet just look at the official Google specs, web browsing time is always higher on WiFi.
I did some real nice graphing of current draw at 2 second sample rate comparing various tasks which is What I'll try to post later..

Bionix 1.2 @ stock speed, not the OC-ed version
it's stable, fast, and battery good
i have my data on all the time sync-ing every 30min
and 1 battery can last me a full day without plugging it in
Wifi automatically sleeps if your phone is idle for so long, therefore saving battery. 3g absolutely kills my battery so I have mobile data disabled when not using it. Works well for me. Also screen brightness on 0% using an app works good.

i tried with and without setCPU, and the difference in power saving was marginal
so i removed it.
it probably gave me an extra hour, but there is a bug with setCPU when picking up calls, it gets staticky until the CPU is at 800 Mhz or more
so with all that i mind, i decided to remove it

True, change the WiFi sleep policy to "never" to avoid this and extra battery savings.
I've been getting the best with CM7 so far, but I think all the roms that are about the same as long as you don't overclock them.
Use a black static wallpaper, low brightness, and get the black-themed MMS and Gmail apps from the Themes/Applications forum.
I can get well through my work day. Usually have 2+ hours of display time on and about 16 hours off the charger by the time I plug in at night with still 20-30% left. Depends on my reception in the day as well, which is pretty bad at work, so I think I'd have 30-35% if my reception at work was good.

Agreed on all points except for GPS. Since it's an on-demand service, leaving it on makes little to no impact on battery life. The phone only utilizes the GPS connection when an app calls for it and saves you the time of having to toggle it every time you need it. Just leave it on.

An active WiFi connection uses a lot less than an active 3g connection because the connection already exists and the data transfers faster.
An idle 3g connection uses significantly less energy than an idle WiFi connection. If you aren't using or connected to WiFi, turn it off. Set the WiFi sleep mode to sleep when the screen is off.
Hi all, I have been seeing some screenshots that other people post about the sleep issue and there is one major difference from mine.
Note sure why, but my Note does not use the 1.4ghz and 1ghz frequencies. I am running a stock gingerbread unrooted ROM.
Is everything alright? I do play some intensive games on it, so I am not sure why it doesn't use its full power.
Please see the screenshot attached.

Wow you are honestly complaining why your phone doesn't use 1400 MHz and I'm here dreading why my note keeps using 1400 MHz draining my battery
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Thats actually a good thing, higher frequencies = greater battery drain. My note also rarely jumps over 800Mhz even though i play intensive games like modern combat 3
Discovered after each reset or power up, Note deep sleep and processor speed unstable.
Mostly mine run on 200Mhz, rarely above 500Mhz.
Stock 4.0.3 LP5/LP9/LP9 Rooted.

Do you have System Power Saving mode on? That mode can underclock the processor to save power, so if you're using it try switching it off.
I can see from screen shot power saving mode is enabled. Please disable then it will work.

Yep, that is indeed the problem. The sign for the power saving mode can be seen. Deactivating it should resolve your problem.

Thank you all. I have completely forgot about it, as I have turned it on after I got it.
I'll try turning it off just to see if it will solve the issue.
I have a follow up question. Why does my phone take so long to get into deep sleep? In the morning when I wake up it is consuming about 6mah of power just after I switch the screen on, but usually it uses about 60mah with all but BT turned on.
Is this normal? What values do you get?

There is no provision for accurate mAh readings on Exynos devices - the function simply doesn't exist unlike in HTC phones. Apps like CurrentWidget and Battery Monitor Widget can only estimate mAh usage readings, so that would probably explain your puzzling values.
The way to tell whether your Note is going into deep sleep is to use CPUSpy - the deep sleep timer should go up if you turn the screen off in CPUSpy, wait some time, turn the screen on and refresh from the CPUSpy menu. On Gingerbread, there also is the customary lag coming out of deep sleep between hitting power button and the screen coming on.
Looking at your screenshot, your deep sleep time doesn't look too unusual. Remember also that the phone does not go into Deep Sleep when charging the battery.

i don't think this is correct.. im on rooted GB stock and i see my note clocks 1400 ghz..
this probably depends on what games or apps you use... it just doesn't make any sense to put an O/S that is not designed to use the max cpu speed of the device

I am curious for those who have mentioned a lagging while scrolling thru home screens. Have you tried going to settings , under developer and adjusted window and transition animation scale. It really flys after you do.:good:

Currently i have trans at .5 and window at 2x but play around with it and see what you like.
Also it's worth noting that these tablets are coming stock with Power Saving turned ON.
I was at Best Buy last night looking for a case and noticed there was a Note on display. I swiped through a few screens and it seemed slower than my Note. Went into the settings and turned off power saving. Then the tablet was noticeably faster even to my wife. Then I used the task manager to close about 20 apps.

I just finished my first discharge down to 8%. I'm not sure what the total time was, but my on screen time was 9hrs 15mins with all that power saving stuff turned off. I don't want this thing hindered at all.

Mine definitely came with Power Saving turned off. I specifically checked for that because of the Verge video performance review that was done with Power Saving on. Are you sure you didn't hit it by mistake or something? It would be a bit weird if some came with Power Saving on and some didn't.
Turn off all animations in developer settings for fastest setup.

I'm getting the same great battery life at Max power. Power savings mode not needed. But I am curious how much longer battery would last with it on.
I think the s pen detection sensor one is b.s. unless you taking your pen in and out constantly, it won't drain hurt to leave it on. I can't see turning that off to be a big battery saver.

On my Galaxy S3 the settings help menu mentions that among other things, it reduces the screen framerate, which would definitely make animations look much less smooth. Getting my Note tomorrow hopefully
No lagging here out of the box both with energy saving on and off.
On Saturday started to work with it intensly, screen illum max. (outdoors), some vid streaming too on HSP, did not give it out of hand even not at lunch and dinner (news reading), and only after 10hrs 29 mins batt was down to 5 %. Beat THAT !
Batt stats say: 98% screen responsible for consumption
There is a thread on this in the Apps board for the Note 10.1, but here are the ones I've used:

Well guys,
There are a few apps that i have been using past few days that have increased my battery life to a great extent. I thought i should share it with you all as well.
Download 3 apps, Optimus battery saver, Wifi power saver and no frills cpu from the market. Optimus battery saver connects to wifi or data(depending on your priority) after a set time say 10 min and syncs the data and switched the connections off. It does this every 10 min or whatever time interval you set and thus you save some juice by not always being connected to network.
Wifi power saver can disconnect the wifi automatically when it detects that it is not connected to any wifi network and thus you can save some battery when you go out and forget to switch the wifi off.
No frills cpu when set on demand can get your cpu frequency down to as low as 400MHz thus save battery when you ae not using your phone.
Could we see some battery stats to backup what you saying?

Sure, I actually did not take any screenshots but i will post them by tomorrow
tasker will take care of the first 2 ones easy. thats what i use. i also use it for other things as well but mostly for that lols.
i use trickster mod for the rest just fyi dont need that many apps when 1 can do the job lol saves EVEN MORE juice!

Guys, I am not sure I understand... Doesn't the built in power saver mode do most of these jobs... It turns off 3g and wifi when phone is locked, and it reduces cpu usage, etc, etc.

Also darkens the screen quite drastically. Sometimes you want more granular control

Power saving mode will only have a a big impact if you do a lot of web browsing.
See my measurements on display brightness:

I don't think CPU downclocking needs to slow down things - the HTC One runs at a lower clock and runs smoother.

It runs smoother only on UI tasks (and even the difference here is unnoticeable).
Most of your time you using apps, browsing the web, taking photos, making phone calls and messaging. In this tasks, the S4 runs as smooth (and even better in some) as the HTC one.
For the OP, I didn't noticed any change in responsiveness when using power saving mode but the brightness is lowered (about 20%).
If you need more juice out of the battery it is indeed a great option and you won't notice any difference but the lower brightness.

See my link for power saving brightness measurements.
Your statement on performance is false. UI (such as OS menus) are indeed slower and display a level of lag. BUT other tasks such as opening the gallery or dialer and web browsing in general (in spite of not having text reflow for custom zoom in the browser)suffer a significan amount of lag. Changing the launcher only improves the home screen fluiditity.
The only area where I see better performance at the moment is for some games. To me it seems 4.2.2 release was rushed and 4.2.1 runs smoother, which could explain the horrible performance of the S4, so we will have to see how 4.2.2. behaves on the One. Many have reported that 4.2.2. has been plagued with bugs and lower (also battery) performance.
I havent notice any change in performance when I switch to Power Save Mode, but again, when I usually do it I don't run any heavy process. I dont know if its placebo or real improvement but my battery does seem to last longer when the phone is about to die and I switch to power save mode
