Dual boot windows phone 10 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With all of the recent discussion on XDA about dual booting and windows phone 10 I was just seeing if any of our devs have any plans for implementing this for our note 3. As windows 10 is designed for arm devices (amongst others) Im not to sure how or if it will work but I would definately be interested in trying it. So if you have any knowledge on the subject or are just interested in the idea of it please share.

I think it's not possible since it's not an open source OS, but I'd definitely love to have this.

Windows 7 isn't supported on Tegra processors. Thats why you won't be able to install it.
i hope noone who has the ability to maybe realize that is trashing his abilities so hard.
Maybe Windows 8 as its supposed to support ARM processor instructions. Start looking for a leaked beta soon.
Also for future reference only post in the Development section if your developing something (an application or ROM). This doesn't include asking about developing something.
Hey All,
So can I just ask why?
I mean I have a Windows Phone 7 phone as my backup/work phone (benefit of being in IT I get to not order my self a blackberry or an Iphone) and I can honestly say its a nice device and have owned 3 different generations of Zunes. Battery life is excellent and the UI is nice and clean and it works well. If I wasn't as vested as I was in android I would possibly consider making that the OS of my primary phone (which is currently a Droid X) once they have them on good old Verizon and HDMI out. That being said even good old Microsoft (who I actually really like) has said Windows Phone 7 is a phone only OS and not meant to be run on tablets. The whole design of the OS actually kind of falls apart if you imagine it on a large display since its novelty instead of having sub windows have everything on one horizontally long display, with the sub menu features essentially hidden off screen.
Now as for Windows 7, as of this point it wouldn't be possible. Windows 7 currently supports only x86 and x64 chips and google stopped supporting these processor types in android after 1.6. Which is the odd reason why some of those new dual boot android/win7 tabs all use android 1.6. So to pull off a main stream Windows OS on this tablet you will have to wait for Windows 7 Embedded (which is win 7 + mobile cpu/gpu support) or Windows 8.
Once they release an offical beta of Win 7 Embedded I have a funny feeling it will be ported to all sorts of devices

Shame
Reading the replies for that gentleman post is like reading a rude war against someone who is just asking a very simple question in an open forum, well people you all shouldn't be that rude to him.. replying with some helping words is better than posting harsh words.. aren't you all knowing what is the meaning of being "Polite"?
may be some day..
it would be a huge undertaking to do something like this.
however, despite feelings running high and peoples obvious favour toward android i do think it would be great to be able to run Windows7 or Windows Phone 7 on the Xoom.
Take as an example the HTC HD2 - its a windows mobile device that now supports the following list of operating systems..
windows mobile ce
windows phone 7 series
android stock
android sense
linux ubuntu - kubuntu
maego
windows95-98 ( emulation )
this is simply because some very talented developers locked on to the HD2 as it was the first superphone with a big screen and big power, and it came along before Android had such devices available...
back to the XOOM - i doubt we will ever see this sort of porting wizardry on our Xooms but nothing is set in stone, if someone could create something like MAGLDR (see HD2 forums) but for the Xoom then we could all enjoy a huge range of operating system choices.
Also, we all need to be aware that for the most part devices are perfectly able to run all sorts of operating systems in theory but as they are mass produced by manufacturers the way they are today we don't get to enjoy the fully unlocked benefits that we could.
imaging buying a pc and finding it wasn't possible to install LINUX instead of Windows !! - you would take it back to the store !!
Okay so i haven't offered a solution here - but lets not stop the imagination of others providing ideas that may some day become possibilities. and lets all hope that some day we can buy tablets like we buy pc's, with the ability to be loaded with a choice os O/S solutions.

Windows 8 instead of Linux Webtop?

I've been browing the interwebs today, and I saw a little article about Windows 8. It reminded me that Windows 8 was going to be built from the up to support ARM devices. Given the power of ARM devices now (Tegra 2, OMAP dual-core, Apple A5, etc.) It wouldn't be unfeasible to see this in the future? How many people would like to use Windows 8 instead of webtop mode on the Atrix? I'm just rambling on, but it's a neat thought.

I think windows phones only support certain drivers for cpus and gpus so if they don't support it I think your SOL regardless of how powerful it is. Kinda how if you bought the best graphics card available but didn't have a driver you might as well have integrated graphics (probably worse than that)

Double post sorry.
I'm not talking about Windows Phone. Windows Phone 7 is a completely different beast, and I know that mainly Snapdragon CPUs are supported at this time, and probably Adreno 200-205 GPUs.
I'm talking about Windows 8, the next version of windows, slated to come out in maybe 2012, probably 2013.
Here's a link I just searched, can't find the one I originally saw:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20026429-64.html?tag=mncol;9n
If by ARM devices they mean ANY ARM device, then we're in luck. Even if it only supports a certain ARM architecture, Cortex A9 will be fairly prevalent during the time Windows 8 would come out, so it's very likely Tegra 2 would be supported in the OS.
Ohhhh, ok gotcha sorry!

+1 on being able to run any version of windows on my atrix lapdock! I've got the debian linux stuff running but I've always had a thing for windows (especially 7 now) and all the programs I run on it. I would surely discard my laptop given the ability to run windows on the lapdock!
I'd love to see a dual boot option once windows 8 does come out

Windows 8 (ARM-build) will not immediately mean you can run any windows programs on it. Programs will have to be compiled for ARM support, just like anything else. It's possible MS may try to streamline it by having some form of on-the-fly x86 emulation but that would be way too demanding for most mobile ARM implementations.
It is unlikely to have many apps or drivers. Open source operating systems are much quicker and easier to port.
Steveg, I think microsoft specifically started that they would not emulate x86 in arm, and that if you wanted a program to work, you had to make sure it compiled in arm.

Doesn't the webtop work by running an x-server off the existing android kernel and using modified ubuntu components? (I may be entirely wrong on this.)
If so, I we can't use the android kernel to boot Windows and we can't run both kernels concurrently. The only way I see this working is actually booting into a Windows 8 kernel (given Microsoft or more likely nVidia provide drivers), but in that case we wouldn't be running Android and thus probably would be restricted in terms of phone functionality.
Anyone with more webtop experience have any ideas?

This is correct, except that the Android and Webtop environments both use the same *Linux* kernel.
If you wanted to run Windows 8 on the webtop, you'd have to either run it across the board or run it in some sort of virtualized machine.
Impossible. Won't ever happen. You know how they say there's no such thing as a dumb question? This thread tests that theory. Sorry buddy!
(Why? There's a litany of reasons: no driver support, no access to source code, Windows 8 is very far from being finished, no driver support, I doubt any devs would be willing to take the project, no drivers, and did I mention that the hardware for the Atrix and webtop doesn't have any NT/Windows drivers? )

Kal-el is rumored to be the ARM architecture that Microsoft showed off their Windows 8 demos on. nVidia has stated they intend to have ARM chips with Windows 8 support. It's entirely possible that they'll only release Windows 8 drivers for Tegra 3, but I see no reason why anyone can know for sure that nVidia won't provide Tegra 2 driver support. All this talk about it being impossible seems incredibly premature given nVidia's Windows 8 pledge.

Okay, either you misunderstand me, our you are replying to someone else in this thread. Of course there its no source code yet. It's not finished. I was just throwing out an idea that if nvidia releases the drivers once windows for arm is released, then maybe instead of the linux webtop, we could use the windows 8 environment.
Edit: And the xda app doesn't quote replies.

There's no source code yet? yet? it will never be! MS won't release its main product source code. It's just impossible, or totally impractical. I don't know if developers would be interested on this.

Unlikely, as win8rt will only come as builds dedicated to a specific device (with that device) and the win8rt bootloader requires a secureboot-enabled EFI bios with _only_ the MS keys embedded. (E.G. how often did windows CE get hacked onto a device that never had it)
_If_ we see win8rt on other T3 Kai platforms, that end up exploitable _and_ people are able to hack out the EFI secure bootloader stuff, then _maybe you'll see a ropey build do the rounds, but I wouldn't count on it
No and why would be the answer.
Windows 8 won't run windows apps and it's a step back to the dark ages in UI design.
Microsoft have also locked have ensured that windows 8 will only boot on approved hardware with signed EFI certs. This also means that a windows 8 ARM tablet won't boot anything else either.
Sent from my LT18i using Tapatalk 2
Windows 8 RT sucks anyway, even if it was ported most people wouldn't care because it's RT and Arm based so it's not like your installing diablo 3.
now if someone releases an intel x86 android tablet, thats another story.
Still, can't wait for Microsoft Surface Pro, that thing looks amazing.
As everyone has said, It is not possible. Even if someone got the EFI to pass, windows RT was not designed for tegra devices.
Questions go in the Q&A section
Yea. But can it run Crysis?

Don't be ashamed. This is a very legitimate question.
Windows 8 finally brings a true mobile windows. And it would be awesome if the nexus could dual boot into it.
Now Windows 8 RT kinda sucks ass since outside of office your just running windows phone apps basically though i'm sure that'll change eventually.
Plus, windows 8 is not really meant for a 7" screen, more like 10" minimum right now.
but as it's been said, it'll probably never happen due to many different reasons.

Windows 8 for Nexus 7- What're our chances?

Windows 8 CAN run on arm, we know that. Or at least, a modified version can anyway. What do you reckon our chances of getting a Windows 8 port to our devices? Maybe a port from Microsoft's Slate Tablet? Maybe the only thing preventing this would be legal issues?
I realise some XDA members may find this proposal ridiculous, but I thought I'd just put it out there anyway .

Wouldn't happen for a couple reasons. First and foremost is that the Nexus 7 does not meet the minimum hardware requirements set forth by Microsoft for Windows RT tablets. Secondly, it would further undercut their OEM contracts since RT is currently only licensed to them. Thirdly, there's a lack of drivers for our hardware. Fourthly, the bootloader would need to be locked down tightly with no way to unlock.
Finally, I highly doubt you'd ever see it ported, as any dev who did try would find themselves on the losing end of a rather substantial lawsuit coming out of Redmond.

While I don't technically disagree with what you're saying (Port is unlikely), I do disagree with some of your reasoning. The requirements of Windows 8 compared to the Nexus 7 are irrelevant, XDA is all about getting devices to do things they were never designed to do in the first place. The HD2 is a great example of this, as it runs ports of every major mobile OS out there (as well as a few not-so-major ones). This kind of shows that how it affects OEMs is somewhat irrelevant as the same thing can be said about most devices from the Windows Phone/CE days. Even if that were true, the numbers of people who would actually buy a Nexus 7 just to install Windows 8 on it (or who WOULDN'T buy a Windows 8 tablet because they can use their N7) are probably very small.
Similarly, I don't think Microsoft has ever taken any of our developers to court. A C&D might get sent out, but that's probably the height of it. It certainly hasn't prevented developers from trying before.
I think the bootloader is completely irrelevant as well, why does the bootloader have to be locked down? To meet Microsoft's licensing requirements? That doesn't make any sense, nothing would be licensed (Which is what makes the whole thing a grey area for sure) so licensing requirements don't matter. The fact that we have reasonable control over the bootloader is actually a massive advantage.
The real issue that you've mentioned is regarding drivers. There's very few RT tablets out there right now so there isn't a lot of drivers we can pilfer (Although it probably will help that Surface is based off of Tegra 3 - which is what the N7 uses, albeit not the same type). Never mind that, not a lot of research into RT has happened just yet so the ability to pilfer ANYTHING is up for debate right now - surface is certainly going to be locked down to a large extent and as far as I'm aware there aren't going to be any System Dumps lying around that we can use either so there's a lot to do before even considering porting to something like the N7. I doubt anything like that would happen any time soon and by the time it does (assuming it ever does), the N7 might be old hat. None the less, I wouldn't rule it out as a definite no, just more of an extremely long shot for now.

Thx for help. I'm setting now Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my spare laptop (Acer TimelineX 3820TG) with needed build environments.
I have no guarantees that anything what I'm trying will work, but I really hope that I can avoid bricking my gt-6800 and get the cm10.1 kernel to work with the device. After that it should be quite straight forward to get the build up and running in some shape.
Ok, now I have the environment set-up, but there are no kernel confs available. So it seems that I have to either found them somewhere or create a new one and then try to figure it out. It seems that Iocerras kernel is a bit old (3.0.xx series). We'll, as soon as I have something to show, I'll put the information available in the development section on this forum and release the first version of the platform. But currently the image build is on hold because I need to concentrate my daily work.

I use Ubuntu as my desktop OS at home. Canonical is looking to make your Ubuntu phone your only device. Android is a great mobile platform but is not a desktop platform. Ubuntu has a desktop platform and a tv platform both sitting on top of a common Linux kernel. If Ubuntu phone works as promised you'll have all three platforms in a single unified device depending on what the device is connected to. Standalone it is a phone/phablet/tablet depending on the device. Attach it to a tv and it is a media centre. Dock it to a keyboard, mouse and monitor it becomes a full desktop. Each with their own interface optimised for that use case rather than trying to make one interface that sort of works for all. If Canonical pulls this off it will be a winner.
