Must I keep nandroid backups necessairly in the phone? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am wondering if I can safely move the >2GB nandroid backup out of my Nexus 4 (to PC, external drive...). In case things get nasty and the phone ends up bricked or something... will I be able to move the files back to the phone to restore them?
Thanks in advance.

Accessing files in a Nandroid backup?

Hi,
Probably a silly question, but is there a way of accessing some of the files in a nandroid backup? I recently flashed a new ROM and in preparation I completely re-formatted my sdcard. I did take the precaution of doing a nandroid backup but I didn't copy over an important folder - my holiday snaps.
Now, rather than nandroid restore completely, I'm just wondering if there is a way of opening the file and extracting just what I need?
Thanks
Nandroid only back-ups your system files on the phone not the SD card. If you think about it, it is backing up to the SD card so if your holiday snaps were stored on your card you will have lost them.
Aha! Yes, of course. Bottoms!
Recovering files from SD
stupid suggestion but did you try a program that undeletes/retrieves data from memory cards?
No, I've moved on and, formatted Fat32/Ext3/Linux-Swap and flashed a new ROM
I'll just say I deleted the piccies by mistake and take the flak from the missus.
Thanks all.

If the portion of the SD card your photos were sitting on hasn't been over written yet by new data, a recover program may work. The longer you use the card the less likely you are to recover them.

Can you use Titanium Backup to Move Applications to new phone?

I'm going from a Samsung Vibrant to a G2X. I'm just going to try the G2X for a few weeks and see if I like it. I've been using Titanium on my Samsung for some time now. Do I just copy the Titanium backup folder from my old phone's internal SD and copy to the new phone's SD? Do I move any other files?
Thanks.
That should work no problem. Just don't try to restore system apps and files to the new phone. User apps and data only. And yes all you need is the folder labeled "titanium backup".
Thanks I'll give it a try
yes just copy the titanium backup file to your new phone and download app on new phone
As long as its rooted.

I just tried this while moving from a rooted Droid 1 to rooted Droid 2, I keep getting that the restore fails. Tried various times... is there something I'm missing?
I've never worked with the Droid but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Did you move the file to the removable sd card and then move it from phone to phone or just copy it from one phone to the next with a computer?
Did a full backup with Titanium and moved sd card to the new phone. Tried to restore a few different apps and I keep getting a message that it failed.
hi .
i use titanium backup from my last galaxy tab and now i copy those back up files to my new GS2 but in titanium backup restore part show 0 files to restore !! what should i do ?
Ive also been thinking about trying out the g2x

[Q] Backup/backing up SD/Rooted Android

Hi,
I have searched this topic and most are to do with Titanium Backup or backuping up NAND.
My question is as follows:
With an SD version of Android on HD2, can I simply drag and drop the entire contents of my microSD onto my hard drive as a backup in case of future microSD/Android corruption? Then drag it back onto the microSD and have a working copy of Android? Or will I have problems with file permissions etc?
Is the use of software such as Titanium Backup my only option if the above method couldn't possibly work?
Many thanks in advance for your help!
Cheers,
Harry
Usually it should work but you will have to backup the whole sd since some apps are creating folders on SD

Yeah, that should be fine... but I would recommend also using Titanium backup in case you want to restore your apps later to a different build. Much better I would say because of this.
Thanks for both of your quality comments! I now feel confident that It'll work, and I'll also use Titanium concurrently for future build use as advised.
Cheers,

Vice versa... Swap Nandroid from Tablet A to B...

Is it possible to swap a nandroid from one Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to another Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (exactly the same tab) like swapping the nandroid from each tablet? In other words clone it...(do a Nandroid in one and restoring in the other) Thanks in advance.

yes, it possible
If I'm understanding your question correctly, it can be done and is very simple (to the poster above me: is it so hard to explain how to do something when someone is asking if it can be done instead of just saying yes? I see that on this site too often and I see it when I'm searching for the solution to a problem and come across threads discussing the problem that say SOLVED but the person doesn't explain how they solved it. Its ridiculous)
Anyway... Clockworkmod backups can be accessed with any file manager like ES File Explorer. On the SD card. The backups are saves in clockworkmod/backups/ and all you'd have to do is copy the folder that contains the backup you want to share to the tab you want to restore it in. Place the copied folder in the clockworkmod/backups/ then boot into recovery and restore it.

I don't see a "How" in the question. Then why should someone explain the entire procedure just for a confirmation question.
Also if he wants the procedure too, he can ask here again. Its no big deal
Thanks to both of you... I do know the process, done it many times, is just that I haven't tried it by restoring it on another phone or tablet in this case... Just wanted to be a 100% sure, lol that's all. So shake hands you both, and thank you both too! Take care guys...

Save them to your pc too. Ultimate safety measure. Saved me a few times.
On a related subject, would it be wise to copy or move Nandroid backups, (or Titanium backups), to a storage disk on a computer or USB drive? At nearly 1GB each, backups take up a lot of space on the SD card. If they can be safely stored somewhere else and copied back to the Tab's SD card, this would free up some prescious space on the SD card.
Is this a good plan or am I missing something?
Bob
I always keep at least the latest backup in the device, just in case I dont have my laptop close when I need it...

Yes, it is always best to keep the cwm and titanium backups in your system. But I always keep only the latest copy of both the backups in tab as a security measure as mentioned above.

[Q] copying nandroid backup to another N7?

Hi
So I have a 16GB N7. Am getting a 32GB N7 with 3g. Would it be possible to take a nandroid backup of my present N7 and move it over to the new N7?
Thanks in advance!
No. They are 2 completely different ROMs. You can backup all your apps with TB (Titanium Backup) and transfer that over. Never try to load a Nandroid t from one device to another unless it is the exact same model. Even then things can go wrong, but it is less likely to happen.
