GoodBye to my Beloved S III - Galaxy S III General

To be honest, it has been a great time here but all good things come to an end. So, I am here to say a goodbye to this great forum as I have moved to Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the great developers here who made my Galaxy S III worth having after Samsung officially discontinued support for this legendary device. I never felt my phone was ever lesser than any other phone, thanks to the developers especially @JustArchi, @Moster2, @arter97, @dhiru1602, @genesixxbf3, @varund7726 and some other developers for their great efforts who made lollipop update run on this device which was like a dream come true.
Also a huge thanks to the community here who helped overcome my noobishness and solved all my problems that come around while my stay here.
In the end, I enjoyed my stay at this forum a lot.

It is a great phone, easily one of the best ive ever had! I have just come back to one after a few months with a Nokia Lumia 930 (fantastic windows phone but i had overheating problems) and I didnt realise how much I missed android and how good the custom roms are. Compared to the S3, what is the S4 like with custom roms and such?
EDIT: Oh I didnt realise this is my first ever post, haha!

Move on something worth living the legacy of S3

Dear Kashif,
Congratulation on your new phone however I personally feel that moving to S4 from S3 is no that great as its a slight bump in terms of performance however you should have opted for a Snapdragon 800 series based chipset. There are lot of good options in the market.
My S3 still rocks, its a great package and especially the 8 MP camera and the AMOLED screen is simply ammazing.

The problem for the International i9300 is the 1GB of RAM.
Great choice for the S4 LTE.

This is the best choice due to 4g connectivity. S3 has 1GB of ram and lacks 4g connectivity. LTE variant of S3 doesn't support the frequency on which local networks are being operating.

Overall nice, had to configured lte option in mobile networks by myself as local network provider wasn't supporting S4 officially. Second thing which is good is official lollipop 5.0.1 update.

Should not be a problem if the code were properly optimized, thats the point these days, developers don't think in optimized apps because they think all of us own +2gb ram phones, this is a matter of resources optimization.

I just couldn't bring myself to sell my old S3 and that's why I've got it connected to my upstairs TV as a media/emulation box.

I'm really looking forward to see a review about this phone

I've only just discovered this phone, the hardware sounds insane! I would donate to anyone who could fully port sense to this device
Yes, + one.
It would be really good
Review of Galaxy S is out -> http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9000_galaxy_s-review-478.php
"So, while Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is coming to the market a bit late it hasn't been wasting its time. It certainly is the best Android package we've seen so far - a hearty Samsung welcome to all upgraders. We're not sure about Android newcomers, but anyone looking for the ultimate performance has almost no alternatives but the Galaxy S."
Good luck - these forums are nearly all htc based. Even if there isn't one created here, there soon will be over at Howard and Modaco Forums along with guys and gals cooking Roms.
+1 This is definitely a phone worth having a sub forum for! The only negative thing about it is its build quality. Plastic is a definite no-no for a high-end device.
Was very impressed after having read the gsmarena review and was surprised to see perfect audio quality(almost outperforming the 3GS)! This has got to be THE multimedia device of 2010(unless of course HTC has got something up their sleeve).
My HD2 is starting to look old all of a sudden..
I definitely agree with everybody here, it should have it's own forum overhere. The phone is worth it for sure.

Samsung Sent Galaxy S II’s to Cyanogenmod Dev

Well this is both shocking and awesome. It appears Samsung has sent at a complimentary Galaxy S II to at least one of the developers over on the Cyanogenmod team. Atinm, one of the developers working on porting CM7 to the original Galaxy S tweeted today this welcome news. This is a bold move on Samsung’s part and just earned them a ton of brownie points in my book.
Cyanogenmod started on the original Android phone, HTC’s G1. Since then it has expanded to many other devices, but the list of supported devices remains fairly HTC heavy. While Cyanogenmod’s future on HTC phones may have been a bit shaky until the recent decision to stop locking bootloaders, it appears Samsung is also aware of how influential the power users that love CM are. It may be a bit until we see CM7 running on a GSII, since the original Galaxy S is still a work in progress, but just the fact that it’s coming is exciting
I have to applaud Samsung’s stance towards Android hacking and development lately, especially as other OEMs danced with locked bootloaders and heavily skinned UI’s. Samsung appears to be paying much more attention to not crossing the developers and power users, who tend to be some of the most enthusiastic about Android. In my opinion this is going to pay off as customers, such as myself, who want that freedom Samsung is giving us, are often the ones less tech-savy friends and family go to for purchasing advice. Other hardware manufacturers take note! Let’s hope Samsung keeps this sort of attention to developers up.
And this is why I like Samsung so much. They have great R&D, good developers and they're the most opened among all bigger phone manufacturers. How to not love them? ;-)

After you've used the SGSII for a bit could you post a review comparing it with the DHD; what's better, what's worse, etc?

Me too mate. With G1 getting the ICS I have high hopes that it will be great on DHD. So i'll able to squeeze out another 6 months from the device.
And maybe next year lay my hands on a quad core
Good luck to the OP. He's got a hell of a device.
I've only recently joined, progressed from a year with a Desire. That too an awesome phone.
My wife also has DHD after a iphone 3gs (cough) and immediately I have rooted both, s-off eng and both using custom ROM's with the easy guides and excellent feedback/support found on here. It nice to see equally friendly people on here as well as the Desire forum.
There is still loads of life in this phone for me and the quality of the handset is also superb!
Not only a goodbye to people leaving but a massive thanks to the devs for staying and dedicating time and effort into making superb releases. Donations are on the way shortly.

nope, unfortunately it doesn't because you can say that SGII is theoratically 15% faster than DHD (DHD with custom rom and OC to 1.3ghz ish).

A valid factor ...but only if you're looking to upgrade solely for the increased CPU clock speed/performance etc.
But me guesses an individual will be looking at multiple key factors to deem whether the phone upgrade was indeed worth it... ^_~
A few things coming to mind would be:
Aesthetics (External hardware/OSInterface etc)
Ease of use (External Hardware/Interface)
Features/Compatibility with their existing stuff, ie work, music, vids, pics, games to name a few...
Battery Life
Durability
...all I could think of at present, but I'm pretty sure there are more points to consider.
Either way, opinions on this will be pretty much subjective...
ie, my personal preference would be to steer clear of Samsung's dreaded touchwiz UI, despite how technically superior the overall spec of the SGS2 Compared to DHD... and SGS2's somewhat 'plasticky build' might not last very long with me after my little boy pinches it to watch his kids tv without me knowing about it...
but that's just me... might be completely different for someone else... like the OP thats just decided to upgrade... ~_^
I have the dhd and I got the wife an SGII
For me the SGII is the better phone, display is a lot clearer, the ui is more res2oldponsive even when clocked down etc. Dont get me wrong I love my dhd but its a bit "old" these days
Downside to the SGII is the battery life, standard and modified roms are both poor in my opinion, an in car charger is essential so it can be topped up before going to work or coming home from work etc.
I thought about this option too, upgrading to a SGS II coming from my DHD, especially seeing the big price drop on the SGS II now..
But then..

Idd..
If I'm upgrading it will be to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.. But so far still having lots of fun with the DHD and the loads of possibilities of custom ROM's
Hey,
Do you really see a battery life improvement ?
I had a SGS1 (Captivate), and couldn't stand Touchwiz. It drove me insane. What drove me more insane was the way Samsung would treat the dev community. Not much has changed since then with the release of the SGS2.
My girlfriend has the SGS2, and I will say the screen is nothing short of brilliant, and the form factor/weight is superb. However...Touchwiz!!! Argh...I hate it. It won't go away, either. Development is pretty slow as Samsung won't release the kernel source (they said they would...but then released some different source that wasn't the one on the phone)
I hate to see one of the premier Android handset makers acting so much like Apple. All that being said, I'm saving my money for the Galaxy Nexus...should be able to get it some time in February.
I think Samsung would exponentially increase their user and fan base if they would just ditch Touchwiz. Although, one of the main complaints I hear from people (mainly women/girls) about Android is that it's too complicated. I don't get this, but OK. I guess that is why Samsung seems so determined to mimic iOS.
Bye

Galaxy S2 Development is dead.. NOT a rant thread

Well, This is the first time I make an useless thread in XDA, But I'm just really mad at how dead are the forums in S2 section.. Most of the developers moved to Galaxy S3, and I think the LG Optimus 4X and Transformer prime got a taste of CM10 already.
I've been checking twitter A LOT and almost none of the developers are working on S2, Codeworkx is working on i9100G and the rest on S3.
I'm not blaming the developers for leaving us, I mean not like they're forced to develop or they're getting paid. They're doing it for fun and some of them earn money from donations. And from what I've been reading, Jelly bean is hard to port on S2 because of the incompatible chips or something, they aren't open source friendly, but I mean, S2 is still in the main page as one of the most popular devices and actually no1 is trying to get CM10 to work on S2 /: when I saw Galaxy S3 I was like.. god that's an ugly phone and it uses pentile, the battery seems lame and they didn't use the dual core exynos that is faster, I don't remember the name of that processor, so i thought not many people would move to S3. I can afford a S3 but I think it's a waste of money when i have a S2 which is super fast and the screen is amazing, and to me, the design is better on S2.
IF you wanna post your thoughts about the development in S2 lately feel free, if not just leave this useless thread.
after all this is the general section about Galaxy S2. I'm just kinda sad and disapointed, when JB was released the CM team said it'd be super super easy to upgrade from ics to jb, again I'M NOT blaming the developers or trying to get anything with this thread, the developers are amazing persons that made a lot of things for our device already and i love em
has HTC seanstion got CM10? has Optimus 2X got Cm9 ?
So my dear foolish friend stop comparing ur phone with the latest ones and wait for a while !!
Sgs2 forum seems kinda dead in the couple of months and weeks lately and we can't blame the devs for having the latest toys to play with. Anyway, even though this is the general forum for sgs2 i don't think rant threads are accepted here. I have seen alot of threads like this being closed down. I suggest change the title and the message a bit in order for your thread to not be closed by the mods. I too want JB and so are the others, the best thing for us to do is wait for sammy or other devs to port JB in our device. Cheers!
Btw, by S3 you mean the U.S variants? Because the international version of Sgs3 has a quadcore exynos processor while the us variants have a dual core S4 processor.

i agree with you! but something else made me an impression, the sgs2 community are a bunch of kids (i dont mean you exactly). if i open a thread and if i type "moron", "retard", "idiot" or some other offensive name calling i get instant results! why is that? why does everybody call the other some name? are you better than the rest? no.. have you done anything to contribute to the community (besides being a huge SoB)? no.. then shut up.. the HTC community is much more friendly, and best of all people are always trying to port something.. here we find 20 different versions of aokp, cm9 and so on.. basically exactly the same, but they've added their preferred fonts, wallpaper and all that crap. it's like that because the real developers you can count on your both hands.. the other ones are a joke.. if you put different tweaks, kernel, modem and you theme a rom.. that doent make you a developer.. developers develop.. they make programs, port roms, make things that dont work or arent compatible - compatible and working.
THAT's MY opinion.. agree with it or not

I feel the same. But I am patient waiting for Samsung to release a source code and then CM10 will surely happen to S2 as well... I am also trying to trade my s2 with a Nexus but can`t find some one to do so. Anyways, CM is great and they are doing a great job. Keep up the good work guys!
Stop whining ...
It's kind of true ... thinks really slowed down a lot!
We might expect:
- official 4.0.4 rolling out july - august (for sure)
- official 4.1 this year (maby)
But cm10 undoubtedly will become a very good alternative due time, expanding life of my smartphone a year or even two.
I have no problem using my beautiful phone as a ... phone ... instead of using it as an ongoing development project
If one is addicted to a daily firmware fix ... then stop whining and move on to then next hot piece of hardware

I totally agree with your point on having different versions of the same ROM with only changed icons, wallpapers and other non sense stuff. No new feature addition or anything of that sort.
Thats why I'm either on Samsung's Official ROM or on CM9.....coz both of them are unique in their own way. Others are simply tweaks of these 2 ROMs only.
Sorry, I find MIUI pretty lame....
If codeworx would see this he would say blame samsung
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
No one likes to work on the S II. Codeworkx is working more on the i9100G because it's OMAP, lot more easier [and fking great, his words] than Exynos. The S I development is better than the S II, because the S I hardware is very similar to the Nexus One, so, nexus... you know. The Galaxy S JB will be better than the Galaxy S II JB. That's why, and more things, I really want to sell my S II and buy the Galaxy Nexus. The hardware of the Nexus is just a bit [really bit] lower than the S II. But with JB it just turns the Nexus a kickass phone, much better than the S II. Most likely S II won't get JB, even Samsung is tired of working on it.
So, +1 to your ideas.

There's a dual core exynos that runs better than the quadcore I don't remember the name, and thanks i'll take your advice and change the title
There's still some hope.
SGS2 isn't flagship device. however even if Galaxy Note would be promised JB devs will get some blobs.
If I remember also the Galaxy Tab 2 and 7" variants are Exynos means some support could be get from those.

Pentile seems bad on a spec sheet, but in real life the implementation is stunning. Once I tried out the S3 I just had to have it, but I'm surprised how quickly everyone that used to be here have moved on to the S3.

Well if everybody has tons of money it's obvious!
Personally I bought my S2 a year ago and I don't have the money to buy an S3! I was so happy when they announced jelly bean, because I knew the S2 has a big community and I thought it would have seen JB soon, but now I'm realizing that the developers have abandoned our device! What can I say, I'm really really disappointed! I will never buy another non-nexus device! Never never never never! Just wait one more year, Samsung will release another super device, all the developers will move to that device (with the money that users donate....) and then the S3 will no longer be supported. I've already said it, and I'm gonna say it again, This is not the spirit of android!
>no one is working on jb for the S2
Not true, codeworx and espenfjo are working on it, plus other devs.

I say, just be patient and wait, it's not like CM will abandon the S2, it'll just take more time comparing to other, more open, devices.

the same happened to me.. i had a big hope and now i see everyone is getting JB and we havn't even started /: It feels weird you know, we're used to get all the updates and now S2 is dead. I also bought my galaxy S2 and since then i check the forums daily for updates, new kernels, roms etc, I've flashed over 100 roms or even more. Am I the only one that feels like the S3 isn't worth it if you have a S2? D:

Codeworkx is only working on i9100G I stalk his twitter a lot and that post is old but yea, we have to be patient and stop rushing the devs (If there r any still here)
But GT-I9100G is much easier to port since has a more open hardware, who would start from the hardest thing first and then leave the easiest for last? If it's easier you can get things done faster and later use the knowledge gained on the harder task.

[protest] where are gone developers for gt-i9505? [protest]

I open this thread because I think there is something wrong.
Why the note3, note2 etc. already 'there are rom final of galaxy s5, ma s4 we are still to zero? I can not understand why!
I hope that the moderators can understand the outburst of a user who has a passion for android.
I hope I have given a shock to everyone in the friendly way.
thanks for your attention.
I know what you are saying. There doesn't seem to be many devs and themers etc in the international S4 forums, and the few there is dont seem to be very helpful or active, especially in the themes and apps thread.
In all the time I have been coming here, I don't think I have seen a single 'recognised developer' or 'recognised themer' in any of the many threads, especially the S5 threads.
It's pretty shocking really, especially with the S4 being so popular. You would think it would have far more support than it does.

in fact! The galaxy s4 is one of the phones most 'popular, and you do not understand where are all the developers, maybe they are secretly at work but at least they could warn us so we are more' quiet ....
outputs are a few applications, and most also have bugs .... it's something a bit 'sad what's going on
It is sad but i have to agree the S4 is not getting attention of much developers, dont know why it is the most sold Android phone and still the Note 2 and 3 beat us for number of developers, they have ported all s5 apps and we are just struggling trying to do it by us with copying things here and there.
Dont know why so
For Note 2, Sammy released a fully Libs/Framwork Base, so porting was verry easy,
For Note 3, Devs Mad great works, but still in progress
For us, We need to wait
Yeah I agree with you guys note 3 got all s5 features even ultra power saving mode. All least they can port the rom ( ditto note 3 ) for us.
Something that Samsung should have provided to all flagshi pphones from day1...

amen to that m8
It would be nice if you all stop asking for this and that... No dev signed a contract saying he would provide all latest features to S4. Its not their job. So just wait until someone capable does that, if you can't wait sell your phone and buy the latest one as you want Thread reported.

it's just a friendly protest!
it is useless to say you wait and sell the phone etc ... we all know how it works do not need him to tell you ... it was just kind of a question to understand why the developers for s4 (popular phone) are so 'absent

Yeah yeah yeah. The international S4 forums hardly gets any support from 'recognised' devs and themers etc, thats just the truth of the matter. You virtually never see recognised devs helping out in the apps and themes forum. With their knowledge and skills, they could get all or most of the latest and greatest apps from the S5 working on our phones, because everything that is needed to get them working, is right there in the ROM. It just needs someone knowledgable and with experience with android and TW ROM's to figure it out. I just wish the guys with the knowledge would help people out more!

Hahahhaha.
Bro let me tell u something
A lot of developer more likely to ported or focus on note due to certain reason
1st larger community starting from note 1.
2nd all dev are helping each other on rom
3rd note are more user friendly framework based on certain dev.
Just pray. So far follow more than one thread. S4, note 2 and note 3 development. And downloading 1xxx gb of rom files and apk of s5 to mod it with my s4.
So far i do excited. Even sometimes i have to flash and wipe my phone more than 5 times. Soft brick blalallalala
And do understand s9me of dev are studyin
Just relax and wait with patience hehhe

@nplnpl isn't this a great opportunity you to step up to plate and become a recognized dev or themer

Hi Dudes.
From a theme perspective, there is not too much to do nowadays for the S4. Stable ROMs with few unnoticeable firmware update changes led to this. Since KK release, Sammy added only 1 lonely PNG !!!
While porting a theme to the Note3 community, S5 apps flooded the ROMs with doubtful results. Lots of FC's ... Music hardly opens.
So, may be we can just enjoy the stability and try to calm down our ORD.
Nice regards.
.
To be honest the is probably a few reasons we are seeing less and less on these forums.
1. Many ROMs are ported to dozens of devices, meaning maintainers are needed to work across all phones. Likelihood is some models are more time consuming then others.
2. The s4 was a flagship device, devs don't earn a huge amount for what they do so for a lot the top end devices are out of the question until the price drops
3. In line with above, as the price comes down, the price of newer models released do too. For example, my wife's note 3 was released at the same price my s4 was worth 6 months after release.
4. In general, a fair amount of Developers come from the US, this device is null and void to them.
5. We seem to of hit a plateau regarding features and performance for the s4 where as newer devices have newer features to build on.
6. Its summer (nearly) and a lot will be studying for exams
Make of my views what you will...

While I do agree with the obvious.. all great devs have jumped ship, a thing I am truly sorry for, we have no right to protest. They don't owe us anything.
All they did, they did from passion and on this base they've created this wonderful community - xda which indeed grew along with Samsung and HTC a few years ago, period in which Samsung was the no 1 choice for any big dev.
They weren't payed for this, some didn't even got the respect they would've deserved and nowadays they have other priorities, other passions or other preferred device on which to try their magic. It's their decision, they probably have good reasons for this and we can just accept and respect their decision in respect for their great work.
Beside, the context has changed, now there are many potent OEMs, each really trying to do their best when it comes to fast updates, functionality of the sw and top notch hw.
_______ _______ _______ _______
Anyway, just wanted to get you guys a glimpse of hope.
Apparently @sac23 is ready to start working on a direct port of the s5 to the s4 (just after he irons out the last few things the on the s5 port to n3).
This beside all the great work @Albe95 , @Arsaw , @Tamerlan2009 , @m_beek , @Carotix , all roms maintainers etc. are doing!
Fun isn't over yet boys!!!
