I have the SM-G920F and the 4G signal bars are correct, but the dBm signal is not. It always shows -113dBm 0 asu no matter what signal I have:
http://i.imgur.com/nuJKN4B.png
It prevents apps like Network Signal Info, Rootmetrics & LTE Discovery from working, as they cannot read the LTE signal. Using the service menu found by dialing *#0011# I can see the correct signal, but it's not shown in the Android settings and no apps can read the correct signal.
This isn't a problem on my Galaxy S4 with stock touchwiz lollipop 5.0.1.
Edit:
I see this thread deals with my issue, but I don't know how to delete the thread I just created.

I wonder if this could affect battery life in any way. If those apps you mentioned can't function correctly because of the weak signal, maybe some other system app is experiencing the same thing, which leads to battery drain?

Can anyone with 3G version of the tab check what is shown under Settings > About tablet > Status > Signal strength?
On my device it seems to show the correct value for dBm but the asu shows always 4 (even when Airplane mode is on).
This problem seems to affect Mobile network signal info on battery history sceen also.
I just want to know if all devices have this problem or is it just me.
I attached two sceenshots to show what i'm talking about.
sorry, this is a bit unrelated to what you asked and possibly idiotic but where in this world did you get a 3g version of the tab?
thanks!
i got my 3g 16g 10.1 in Singapore last week

I ordered it from http://www.cyberport.de/ but it seems they are also out of stock now.
My Tab is showing 4 asu in both 3G mode and flight mode. dB is -55dBm on 3G and -113dBm on flight mode which i think is normal/expected.
not sure about asu though.
hi,
i have the 10.1v (3g model ) and Signal strength shows -83dBm , the asu , fluctuates /moves,between 16,15 14 or 13
point ,as i see it,the asu should fluctuate slightly, from time to time ( as signal strength varies ??)
something for nothing !

ASU or Active Set Update is an integer value proportional to the received signal strength measured by the mobile phone. So the ASU should change when the dBm changes. On my device the dBm seems to show the correct values, but ASU is stuck at 4. It seems that all European GT10.1 have this issue. It's probably a software issue because the dBm seems to be reported correctly and the ASU value should be calculated.
I seem to be having the strangest LTE / 4G signal issues with the S4. I get 4G fine but when i leave a 4G area it drops to H+ or if the signal on 4G is weak it drops to H / H+ during this transition i am left without any signal for seconds to minutes as it switches.
Is there any way to find out what my LTE modem version is as i know my GSM one?
I am not too sure if this switch is normal to be lost without signal as GSM > H > H+ works fine and i still have signal

Check your baseband version and try to flash through ODIN the right one for your location

how do i do this? i can only see GSM modem not LTE. i know both versions maybe different
Mate the baseband of your phone is the same for both the gsm and lte configurations of your phone. If that won't work you can still check your carriers vpn configurations to see if there are correct

i just searched forums :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525084
respider posted this:
**If you are having the old bootloader XXUB flash GSM_Modem_XXUEMJ5_and_LTE_Modem_XXUBMH1.tar file with odin by selecting phone.
**If you are having the new bootloader XXUD flash GSM_Modem_XXUEMJ5_and_LTE_Modem_XXUEMJ5.tar file with odin by selecting phone.
So this means that even if it says the LTE modem is different to the GSM modem you are saying that the help about the modem for GSM and LTE is in fact the same?

From my knowledge you cant flash anything you like. You need to flash the correct modem for your region.Whats the version of your bootloader and your country so i can link you the correct file
I am experiencing the same thing, the switch from H+ to 4G doesn't drop the actual signal from the network whereas from 4G to H+ the signal drops leaving me no service at all for a few seconds.
I am starting to think that this is the normal behavior because it's like this since I got the S4. Oh and I have the latest modem for my country as well if that helps.
Perhaps someone with knowledge on how the modem works can chime in?

Thanks chickentuna for your reply
Ok the 4G works perfectly fine in Hong Kong, London but as soon as i leave london and go to areas with 4G but low signal, i get the horrible loss of network until the phone does a search. I think its more network / phone related but would just need to learn to disable 4G out of the main cities.
asbanoglou thanks for trying you can flash any modem but whether or not it will work is another matter. I understand bootloader, different modems and csc i am looking for something a little more non generic. I first assumed this was the firmware / modem combo but after trying multiple ones this does not seem to be the case unless there is a long standing issue with the S4 and LTE.
As a future note to get the modem versions you dial *#1234# . More > About does not give you the full picture but thanks for those who tried to help
Hi !
I recently purchased a S5, SM-G900F model, i'm in europe and i'm using Vodafone as a mobile carrier.
today i saw that i was only getting 1 bar and sometimes didn't show any bar at all,I went to settings and my signal strenght was at -122dbm 22 ASU, connection type as LTE, my mobile data was off.
i was afraid i had no connectivity at all and i picked another phone and i voice called my S5, i was able to make the voice call successfully and my bars went from almost none to 4-5 bars, signal strenght was at -79dbm and surprisingly it didn't drop to HSPA or UMTS.
I thought the most common behaviour for the instantly signal boost was to drop to 3G, but it didn't happen, connection type was at LTE and for long time.
I must say i was at the same place from almost an hour and it didn't boost until i made the voice call.
My question is, can a carrier be able to "keep" a mobile phone at small amount of cell towers and boost signal up with some voice call activity or mobile data traffic ?
Thanks and sorry for my poor english

1- 3G signal and LTE signal are different and separately. Some reasons that may keep your phone not drop to 3G:
a) 3G signal at that time is weaker than LTE
b) Your carrier can set a policy/algorithm of how a phone switch between 3G/LTE signal
c) Check your network settings in Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Network mode?
2- Regarding to your question, I can say that the carrier can not have such ability.
I'm facing these weird issues on my phone and I will break it down as follow
1. I can get signal withGSM mode and that's the only signal frequency that can use mobile data. Sometimes it fluctuates that even though you can see some signal bars, you cannot send and receive text messages or calls. When the signal is dropped it says "not registered on network".
2. When I change my network mode to WCDMA only, sometimes I do have signal but most of the time I don't have any reception and when I activate mobile data it is not connecting. No mobile data icon like H or H+ being shown beside the signal bar but with GSM it is working fine with "E" (edge) signal.
my FW version is
AP: I9505XXUGNH8
CP: I9505XXUGNH8
CSC:I9505OLBGNH2
I haven't tried using a custom rom for mobile data usage to see if this is just a FW issue. I have tried every possible way to fix this but to no avail. Is there someone who can help me to fix this?
I've had the phone for about a month now, and I've never seen the signal strength indicator display anything other than max. I definitely know that my signal strength is pretty poor at my workplace via my old Nexus 4 and the LTE Discovery app. Does anyone's phone display an accurate signal strength? I'm currently stock on Marshmallow (same issue with Lollipop) with T-Mobile as my carrier, if that matters.
That sounds like "Demo mode" in System UI Tuner. It makes everything look like it's working perfectly.
It's also possible that you have a very clean signal to a malfunctioning tower. I've seen this in a few places.

Demo mode is disabled. I've installed a couple of apps that display information about my cellular signal, and they accurately displayed the corresponding indicator based on the signal strength. I'm not sure why my Moto X won't accurately show it. Maybe I just need to find a place that has no service just to make sure. LOL
