[Q] Should I update to Lolipop? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey.
I just ordered my LG G2 and as I read it comes up with 4.2 in the box.
Should I update to lolipop immediately?
I've read that people were experiencing worse battery life and bugs.
Is it true?

For overall better and stable performance stick to Kitkat currently until Lollipop stable ROM releases. Best option would be CLOUDY G2 v2.2 with Dorminax 10.2 kernel.
You will have amazing performance, stability, G3 UI, RAW photo via Xcam or Mi2Raw, Dual window etc.. Check it out here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783192

I installed a 5.0.2 stock rom on my g2 and I can tell you battery life is really bad, for me anyway, im getting a maximum of 3 hours. If I were you upgrade lollypop when battery life is better hopefully 5.1. However performance is great on lollypop compared to kitkat for to me the extremely low battery life is not worth the hassle.

But if I'm not mistaken, I'll void my completely new phone's warranty?
I'm a heavy user, I'll emulate games, play very graphically intensive games and I'll just squeeze everything I can out of the phone so warranty is nice in case CPU dies out of heat after a year or something.
And if I were to flash a custom rom now, what about Cloudy 3.0? The lolipop version?
Is it working great?

You can always flash stock and unroot anyways.

I've been a long time custom rom/kernel user on my old ZTE blade but it was a year ago after I purchased it.
Well why I'm here, it's pretty simple, XDA is biggest android community out there.
It necessarily doesn't mean it's only for Android modders, people ask all kinds of questions here.
And so did I, I asked if it's worth it to update to Lolipop rather than to stick 4.2/4.4.
"You can always flash stock and unroot", you sure manufacturer can't spot that it was modded before? And what If the phone just dies, you can't unroot and flash stock rom on a dead phone.

Yeah you can get it back to stock enough for warranty purposes. If it dies completely while modded then you should get your warranty too. It's really hard to totally brick. (Came from blade too via G300 and Moto G)

From my personal experience and opinion, lollipop it's very stable, on my D802 it's rocking...the only scratch is the LGFlashTool it's a little unstable for my opinion...I flashed Lollipop d802 v30a and it's perfect!!!
My advise is while you are with JB rom root it and flash TWRP recovery and then flash CM 12 (that's lollipop). I would do it if I knew LGFlashTool (for my experience) is so unstable...
Don't worry that a thread for you to read in general I think...for rooting, flashing, etc.

You can always flash STOCK ROM and unroot, So you can retain warranty.
And CLOUDY G2 3.0 is for Korean Variants only right now.
** Remember : Before start flashing read xda threads about these carefully. You better start with root and TWRP with Autorec.
Hit thanks if get helped.

[Q] Android 4.4.2 Kitkat VS 5.0 Lollipop

I just installed official Touchwiz Lollipop from Samsung on my Galaxy S5 and i just wanted to ask you guys...
I think kitkat have a definitely better battery life and a much more beautiful lock screen... but Lollipop comes with ART and great design improvments on system apps.
Which one do you think it's better? Kitkat or Lollipop and why
KitKat is better (for now).
Better battery life, no proximity sensor issues, no wifi issues, no light sensor issues , TW works smoother, overal experience is better even with no ART. Benchmark scores is not everything.
I got Lollipop 3 times and every time I downgraded to KitKat stock rom with root.
No exposed framework on LP (yet).
Maybe in couple of months when LP will be more mature project I will update.
Android One is going to have Android 5.1 soon. For now they sticked with 4.4.4.
I think that Samsung was to hurry with 5.0. They should update to 4.4.4 (especialy they had 4.4.4 done for G901).
I beg to differ with qubbus, I think LP is a much better experience than KK.
- Much more refined and better looking UI;
- I've had none of the issues stated in his post. Battery is the same for me, no issues with the sensors.
- I indeed miss Xposed but for now I rather have the small tweaks of Lollipop.
All in all, the choice is yours.

Battery was the main reason i choosed to downgrade.. I couldn't get even through 1 day !
The rest was fine for me. ( Even if i didn't liked that new lockscreen too much )
i got my s5 on kitkat and coming from a nexus4 I was quite unsatisfied with the smoothness. but some dev's at the N4 community are really far at solving bugs and memory leaks so lollipop is running quite perfect on the N4. anyway, after I flashed lollipop on my S5 for the first time I was quite happy with the smoothness. much better then KitKat! yesterday I downgraded to KitKat because I wanted to try wanam xposed. but I almost instantly returned to lollipop.. much, much better! it looks better (too bad it's still a long way from stock android), it's much smoother and for me; battery life isn't much different. I didn't encounter any bugs, for me lollipop is running bug less but I have to say I don't use any of Samsung's extra features..

funny how people have different problems with the same OS
I wonder if there like me who have problems in the game of Modern Combat 5? It fails at startup after lollipop update.

Lol, thanks. Yes, I understand what it means, my apologies for not elaborating. Are you saying that you're flashing the LP tar through Odin, then "downgrading" to KK by flashing the KK tar through Odin, or just flashing down up and down with zips through custom recovery?

Yup, that's what a lot of people are doing after updating via KIES or OTA to Lollipop and finding it worse than KK
Im considering it myself, although don't seem to be having as many issues as others are posting since factory resetting and freezing a few bloatware apps
For me KK is better than Lollipop.
1. Most mods here don't work on Lollipop, yet
2. Xposed isn't supported on Lollipop (BIG ISSUE FOR ME)
3. Notification dropdown background is transparent. I know I can change it if I flash AllianceRom 6.0, but the above 2 points still stand
Gonna wait until Rovo fixes Xposed (hopefully) and for most mods on XDA to recieve a Lollipop version as well (some have it now, but not even close to all of them)
Soo.yeah...Lollipop is smoother and better looking, which means absolutely nothing if you can't mod it the way you want to!
---------- Post added at 09:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:43 PM ----------
If I wanna try Lollipop, can I restore my 4.4.2 nandroid backup over my 5.0 firmware just like I would normally if I'm on KK?

There seems to be a lot of conflicting info about it, but Ive read a good few people saying they have managed it fine with no problems after flashing back to KK - not done it myself yet though
But yea, a lot of places are saying if you flash from a KNOX enabled firmware back to a firmware without KNOX, it won't work due to the bootloader, but members here and droid central forums report it working 100% fine
Was there ever a build of KK that had KNOX ?
If yes, then that's likely the build people are flashing back to, if not, then I have no idea
Im still on the fence about flashing back, or just forgetting the warranty and rooting this thing on lollipop as it is
I suppose even if it bricked, you'd be able to recover with ODIN
I'm coming back to KitKat. I didn't like android lollipop. Some of the aplications are not supported and battery life is terrible

Lollipop for V500

I've searched and searched and all I could find are posts and articles claiming the Google Play Edition will have official Lollipop support but not a single thing for the v500.
Has LG abandoned this tablet? What's the latest news on this? Is there even an official 4.4.4?
I've been using CM11 so I'm a bit out of the loop on stock firmware but I've been wanting to go back to stock hoping Lollipop would come out.
Only lg knows if an official lollipop ever comes. And no, there is no official 4.4.4.
I am on aosp lollipop since December and it's great.
I keep hoping and periodically emailing LG USA to say "any word?" If you have not emailed them please do. My hopes are starting to wane... I love the tablet but no official lollipop would stink.
Did the GPE get official Lollipop?
Is it possible to flash the GPE ROM on to the V500?
Is this being done already with any success?
I am tempted to pick one up new at 229.
Is there a better idea out there?
Do I need to learn how to use search better?
Please feel free to answer any or all of these questions, or even criticize my unnecessary line breaks.

7. Sure. Google how to Google better
Anything else?

Id say even better. Official cm12.
Official CM 12 nightly here... everything ok.
Only bluetooth that at every reboot misses my keyboard, but battery life is ok & great.
Performance: great cpu performance, less on gpu (proprietery blobs do it better) ...... some games like sim city have slow downs....
Benchmarks confirm... great CPU + VM performance, but less points with GPU.
But with that adreno drivers the performance of GPU cannot be paired with the stock?
are we ever gonna get this? been over 4 months on gpe.
I believe so, if the G2 got it than we sure are gonna get it.

They should have! Since the memory leak was a pita on 5.0.2 Nexus5. I'm on a custom 5.1 rom with no more leaks...
has anyone tried installing this? is it even possible?

Back to KK

I have been using LL for about 5 months and could never get used to the lag. It was very faint but i could notice it. I tried the stock custom roms and the customs roms but was not able to find one that worked without lag. I also missed the status bar notifications on the lock screen. It was a pain always having to unlock it to see the notifications.
So i decided to go back to KK. I used CloudyG3 1.2 rom and KK modem/radio and am very pleased. Much smoother than LL. Status bar notification on lock screen is a godsend. It even seems like the display is a bit crisper. Maybe thats just my eyes playing tricks on me because i am so impressed with KK. anyways just wanted to tell you about my experience.
Yeap, it's your eyes! I have bought my g3 when lollipop was already on it so i haven't had the opportunity to test KK, but i have installed it 2 months ago out of curiosity.
Lollipop is definitely smoother and faster. If you search YouTube, there is a proof of that, with animations in Kk vs lollipop in slow-motion. You'll be going back in a few hours/days
Of course you think LL is smooth. You have nothing to compare it to. Without testing both of them first hand like I have your comments do not mean much. I went from KK to LL back to KK.
Read again what i have written. I have tested kk also, 2 months ago.
My comments don't have to mean something necessarily. Why did you start this post, if you are so easily offended? Lollipop is definitely better, smoother, faster than kk. You can start a poll, you will see you are wrong, lollipop will win by far. Haha. Over and out.
Dude I bought my LG G3 with Lollipop as well. Didn't have a chance to test Kitkat on it, but, I used to have Kitkat on my Nexus 5 and it was so much better than Lollipop I'm telling you. My LG G3 is laggy is hell and gets hot for no reason at all and the battery doesn't give me even a solid 3 hours SOT, I hate Lollipop. Can you please give me the link to download the CloudyG3 1.2 Kk ROM? I searched but I couldn't find it
I also would like to know where to find Kit Kat rom and baseband for downgrade. I looked in the forums but all links I found were offline. THank you.
Just a tip, but part of the heat issue that I have discovered and a decent remedy is if you are wherever and using WiFi- turn off cellular data because your phone is constantly searching for the strongest signal and I easily run 5°-10° cooler and my battery life is definitely better. I hated, and I mean despised LP for almost a year- and the past few months on my G2 and G3 it has grown on me, I don't get much lag that isn't associated with my own bs, maybe you just haven't tried the right LP rom yet?

Thanks for making me fall in love with my LG G3 all over again. Absolutely love Kitkat! No lag at all compared to Lollipop, battery is good and it only gets heated when I'm gaming on it. I'll stick with this ROM until a more stable Lollipop/Marshmallow release is available from LG.

Yes but make sure it is the right version modem. Not sure what it is for the UK. I used the international modem.
I would recommend an AOSP Lollipop build (BlissPop for example) running at 1080P. QHD makes zero difference at this screen size and running at 1080P the phone flies, not to mention a (marginally) better battery life.

If you don't use the camera maybe this not a terrible idea. The stock Kit Kat rom is definitely faster and much much much more stable. And you can use the laser focus and full camera features. Plus the IR blaster. If you disable the stock apps you don't use, its a way better choice than the featureless ASOP roms.
hi there, im using stock rooted lollipop rom v20h, i want to try KK rom to compare but which modem is for international model ? i cannot tell which is best for me cause when i got my phone 2 weeks ago it came with lollipop.
can anyone recommend on a suitable modem pls ?

If I was, I'd go for CM13 as 5.0.2 has always had the issue with a memory leak. CM13 on the Gpad 8.3 is awesome. :highfive:

G2 doesnt get any better than a stock based 4.4 ROM.
I'm having issues with the phone freezing or screen don't rotating to landscape, which solves after reboot. Probably it's because it's rooted and have a lot of crap on it. What I doubt is if 5.x has applications that have been removed.

The battery holds really great, can't Stu but very satisfied. I must say however, that I don't use instant messaging applications like Facebook, whatsapp, line, Twitter or whatever. You really notice battery life improvement.
Here on YouTube comments some users say that android 5.0.2 has memory leak problems, that cyanogenmod 13 is far superior on the LG G2:
https://youtu.be/P3hQc3bCT9o
So better stay in android 4.x or update to android 6.x but with CM, because official update is not available.
On my case. CM13 Dirty Unicorns is working well on my phone. Good battery back up and other features. My device is a F320K. Just try and test other CM13 custom ROMs. :3

So better stay in android 4.x or update to android 6.x but with CM, because official update is not available.

ive never been on KK only when i flash stock firmware.. only a few minutes... stock is better but am on ice x rom 4.5 5.0 drains battery... some pople say KK is better... you should try it if you dont like it fkash back to
KK.

Quick Question

So I am on H91810q and I have kept root through the upgrades. Am I still able to flash another rom like LineageOS or am I stuck with stock since I upgraded so far?
Try it -- it isn't going to break your phone
Probably isn't going to run to well on new firmware though. Most of the heavy development was done on much older firmware, and those parts haven't been updated.

I'm thinking a TWRP Full Backup of the stock rom and wipe and flash LineageOS. In theory do you think I would be able to restore stock if something doesn't go right?
Yes. When you install LOS or a LOS based ROM the only thing that gets flashed is boot and system. Both of those are backed up by TWRP.

Well I just flashed LOS and I can see the screen flashing on and off but no boot. Any other suggestions? Am I stuck with the stock rom which I am gettings sick of...
Nope, you can't downgrade. Unless someone picks up development on current firmware, you can only use stock.
Not the answer I was looking for lol...

I know this isn't a custom rom but you're like me and on rooted Q, I use to not enjoy stock due to not being able to customize the phone how I liked but the instabilities in the camera and bluetooth and battery life made me appreciate the stock/stock based roms for the V20 and I actually PREFER a fully functional camera nd awesome audio recorder than inferior apps. But! Askermk2000's kernel is COMPATIBLE with rooted 10q, I am using it and it has honestly breathed new life into my phome for sure and since we don't have many rom options at the moment at least throw this kernel on your stock 10q rom and enjoy it!
