Hi,
As the topic suggests, I am going to buy a used S4. I checked two S4's both with stock recovery, one was on lollipop 5.0.1 and the other was on kitkat 4.4.2. The stock recovery of 5.0.1 was showing more options than the one on 4.4.2. Is it some thing implemented in the new lollipop 5.0.1 upgrade ?

It could be that samsung added more features in the new recovery. With every update, there comes a new recovery, bootloader etc. so this case is very likely.
If you are going to install a custom recovery anyway, then that doesn't really matter to you

Hi Guys, I am fairly new to flashing and rooting. Have successfully done on my Galaxy S5 and now trying on my Note 3 - N9005. I tried flashing a latest 4.4 rom - Echoe rom and it got stuck in Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Logo. Now i have flashed stock rom (Australian Vodafone) running 4.3. My question is since i am trying to flash a 4.4.2 rom, do i need to do anything specific or just flash TWRP and install a custom rom? i noticed there were 2 versions of TWRP one ofr 4.3 and one for 4.4. I am confused as to since i am on 4.3 version do I flash TWRP 4.3 version? or since i am looking to flash 4.4 rom should i install TWRP 4.4 at first place?

you need 4.4 twrp. It should be 2.7.1 I think. you also need to me sure the Rom is compatible with your phone.

During my first try, i had TWRP for 4.3, which allowed me to flash Echoe Rom based on 4.4 (latest version) for N9005, it even showed me success notification but it never booted past Samsung logo. I then flashed TWRP 4.4 version, but it then wouldn't boot in recovery. i reflashed TWRP 4.3 version and as last resort i had to flash stock firmware.
I will now flash TWRP 4.4 version at first instance and try flashing a rom again. maybe will try a different rom. Thanks for your suggestion :good:
This should be in Q and A don't be surprised if this thread gets closed ..

hello there.
u were sayin u r on 4.3 JB rom.
ur device is N9005 international 32gb right?
let me tell u 1 thing which is a good thing to remember.
4.4 rom will need a 4.4 bootloader.
since u r on 4.3, u must be on 4.3 bootloader which is incompatible with 4.4 rom. flashing twrp for kitkat won't help.
steps that u need to take (easiest) :
1. download 4.4.2 stock firmware.
2. flash with odin v3.09
3. root with cf autoroot (download the KK version)
3. flash custom recovery for KK version (twrp/cwm/ philz). I personally prefer cwm as it has give me less trouble for any custom rom.
4. u can flash any 4.4.2 custom rom now.

THANK YOU!!! This makes lot of sense.:good: I will upgrade to KK first, then custom recovery and then rom. One question? 4.4 is not yet available for my carrier in Australia. can I download and install the Poland version that is floating around internet. Or would you recommend some other.

Basically, I lost my root when updating to Lollipop GPE on my regular S4. I didn't realize this before I deleted my backup (stupid idea I know).
I did find this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2794879) which, from what I assume, I can just install and my phone will go back to 4.4.4 rooted but here is my problem. Since I installed Lollipop GPE rom on my phone the model number is now I9505G even though I originally didn't buy that version of my phone, so do I flash the I9505G rom (GPE) or the regular I9505?
If it helps, I'm with bell in Canada and I was installing jfltecan roms before this all occured.

Jfltecan is refered to the model: SGH-i337M. Try to reflash the stock ROM for your model via ODIN.
Install Custom Recovery Samsung Galaxy AT&T S4 SGH-I337 Ver 5.0.1 Non-Rooted. OK2
Hello, I Want to do some modifications to my Samsung Galaxy S4 and Have so many questions that I am not sure were to start? Yes I'm a noob but learning. I have a SGH-I337 phone that is unlocked so I use it for T-mobile. The phone came with KitKat 4.4.2 NB1 firmware but I managed to update it manually to the latest firmware OK2.
What I would like to do is install a custom recovery and install a clean non bloated Rom. Maybe a custom such as CyanogenMod? Questions: Is there any recovery software that will work on my present upgraded phone such as Safestrap, TWARP,PhilZ or CWM and in doing so I am guessing I need to root my phone first? When you root a phone does that unlock the boot loader? I have read articles saying you can only install custom recovery on the older firmware such as kitkat 4.4.2. or unless a update comes out. I also have read articles that I cannot downgrade and am not sure what that means as I have read articles that I can use Odin and reinstall my stock firmware NB1 is that true? Is there a way to downgrade your upgrades?
I see a lot of articles how to install recovery software but they do not always say what firmware version they are installing it to so I wont even try it. I am guessing-it is the older firmware 4.4.2.
I have read I can flash my kernel to an older Kernel such as NB1 then root it install a custom recovery then upgrade the kernel again? Not sure it I can upgrade or downgrade kernels that are for my phone?
I did manage to root my phone awhile back when it had kitkat 4.4.2 NB1 but had problems later on with my touch screen going crazy as if someone was in my phone so I brought it back to stock by using Odin and reinstalling NB1 firmware hoping to fix the problem. After installing stock firmware I decided to upgrade to lollipop 5.0.1 OB2 and that is were I am now. About my touch screen going crazy I have been reading it may be due to cheap USB chargers which I am using but that is another story.
Well any-help or leads would be appreciated.
Maybe if I wait long enough someone will come up with a custom ROM for my latest firmware as well as rooting it?

Sorry, it is impossible to downgrade to 4.3 once you've upgraded to 5.0. You CAN however downgrade to 4.4 downloading the firmware from sammobile and flashing it with odin. But what do you like about kit kat that Lollipop doesn't have?
If you really want 4.3, flash a custom ROM that is based off a stock 4.3 ROM.
in status bar was notifvation toggles the biggest and thats greeen color more confortable then lollipop 5.0 notification draw........ i dont like 5.0 android.

You could try Jellybean or KitKat ROMS if you feel those Android versions to be better. There's also Lollipop and Marshmallow
But when it comes to PURE AND STOCK Jellybean 4.3 downgrade, it is impossible.
All that was mentioned before is true. You can't overwrite the new bootloader with the old one. If you really want to downgrade, I recommend https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472301 . It's a very old Android 4.4.2 ROM. I used it when it was 4.3 back in December 2013 ( oh man,the memories! ) .It was a great ROM,maybe THE best one at the time. Stability, battery life and customization,it was all there. ROM died and the thread was closed because, I quote, "Thread closed and links removed as the OP is trying to push all his donation-only themes and paid for applications, which is in violation of the terms set out in this portal post and also counts as soliciting donations and commercial advertisement." ... he was basically offering skins for the Samsung keyboard for money. I still love the ROM, if you really want to downgrade, but I can't recommend it. Flash via TWRP 2.8.7.0 and you should be good to go (theoretically) . I would however recommend trying MagMa NX ROM (for a more stock feeling) or AryaMod Note 7 port (for customization). If you don't want a newer ROM,I recommend AryaMod 5.0 . It is based on the stock Samsung Lollipop.

u need root to be able to downgrade, flash the 5.0 firmware via odin, root the phone and flash a kit kat rom and you will be more happy than ever lol
Root isn't required to downgrade and the OP wants JB, not KK.
I'm on Phoenix rom on 6.0. 1 and I'm sick of the weird path name it gives the external SD card. It messes with link2sd and my Manga Reader. I was wondering if I can simply flash a kit Kat rom on miui without ruining anything...
no
So I'll have to go back to stock first via Odin?

you cant do that either. Once you progress past 5.0, youre stuck
I directly downgraded to 4.4 with my G900W8. However, you need to be careful with which version you are going to flash. For example, when I flashed any other 4.4 firmware than NCG (Which is the first version of 4.4 released for G900W8), I faced bootloop.

there is a physical fuse that gets tripped in the S5 once you go past 5.0 that is there to no allow you to go back. Not sure if you were on a 4.4 bootloader that allowed you to do this or what, but trying to flash back to 4.4 after being on a 5.0 baseband is very ill advised
I don't think you can down grade to kit kat, but you can go from marshmallow to lollipop. I just did it last weekend. Check this...https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
I hope it helps you.
Actually i can downgrade anytime from MM to LP or LP to KK

then you dont have a MM bootloader. I just re-read some posts that confirm that the phone locks to 5.0 once you get that bootloader. Its not possible to go back, and it doesnt matter if you have the G900F or not

Then if there is a physical fuse, why was I able to downgrade from MM to KK? One difference when I downgraded from MM to KK NCG was that "Powered by Android" logo was changed to old style. I think NCG build of KitKat changed bootloader from MM one to KK one. Baseband wise, I also flashed KK baseband and it worked very well. It might be different on G900F but with my G900W8 I could go back to KK.

not sure, but ive had my G900P for 2 years 10 months and have been constantly on XDA since my OG evo back in the day (the one with the kickstand) and everything ive ever read saya that once you go past 5.0, you cant go back. Not sure what you have going on there, but there are tons of posts going back several years stating exactly this
Of course you can downgrade to kk.
Just download the kk firmwafe. Pull out battery for 5 sec. Then flash trough odin. Did it mant times and no problem with that.
i did that on my galaxy s5 and it works
